Absolute class mate. Really thought provoking listening to each story, and who from the council decides to knock down a historic church and replaces it with a carpark. Ant suscribed from day one mate, your much better than being on youtube. Please dont let us all wait for the next video 😊
@PaulMurphy. I'm trying to convince Ant to draw some income from his fantastic work. If he won't do members, I'd love to be able to buy a coffee or send a gift. My motive is selfish though 🤭, hoping he can take a day off from making paint, and upload a video every month or so. ❤
I'm a great believer that we all should be educated about our local history and this is a wonderful example of that. Fantastic and passionate production.
Its criminal how you don't have more viewers ,stuck in Australia these days and homesick everyday , your films help me get by living the rich and sometimes dark history of Manchester. Learnt a lot from you ,also bought a book on Jerome Caminada so thanks to opening my eyes to all of this information, they really should teach some of this in schools .
That honestly means a lot Simon. I’m really glad you enjoy the videos and they bring back memories for you. Thanks so much for watching mate. Take care 🇬🇧 🇦🇺
❤❤ hey. I understand and relate to the homesick feeling. I'm in a place that feels like a void. Nothing going on. Don't know anyone and have become a hermit. I vicariously watch videos about my home too

Every time I watch your videos I'm transported back in time to my childhood in nearby Stockport, where I witnessed the end of an era before the slum clearances and the end of the steam train era with all the soot stained decaying properties. My primary school was over a hundred years old then. Your videos are so atmospheric and reminiscent of those days Ant, thank you for another trip down memory lane.
Absolutely fabulous, your videos are better than any BBC ITV channel 4 etc channels and I love the way you are so knowledgeable for a young man .janice x
Mate, you know how much I fan girl your channel but seriously, Your content is absolutely incredible 👌 I love seeing how passionate you are for our history. You can walk around Manchester every single day and spot something that would have historical significance and a story behind it. History should be taught and never forgotten ❤️ smashed it mate, bloody loved this one x
That’s so kind of you to say! Haha we have the same interests and also are fascinated by the same era! How could you not! It was a horrible time to be alive but also fascinating! Thanks so much for the support as always! ❤️
You communicate with real passion and empathy. As a Manc who hasn't lived there for nearly four decades you remind me of all the curious and intelligent folk I remember from my youth. Glad to see that questing spirit is thriving still and hope there will be many more of your quality videos. Thank you!
Fabulous. I spent 20 years of my life in Manchester, my spiritual home. I've discovered more about my former home thanks to you. I appreciate the time & effort you've made in putting together these films. You clearly have a talent & your passion for Manchester shines through. Keep on keepin' on. Thank you.
Not being a native of Manchester (moved here in 1971) i got a job in the city and used to sit in Piccadilly Gardens eating my packed lunch. I had no idea ducking stools and the asylum were once there but was so good to listen to your history of it. I love your videos Ant learning about the past. I think you should have more notoriety about what you do an film. You put so much time and effort into your passion. Thank you so much for highlighting the history of Manchester. Xxx
Absolutely brilliant Anthony, well done mate. Its almost criminal that the past can be forgotten like it is. As for a Church being demolished and replaced with a carpark, i have no words. Like I said, great to see you back pal 🙂👍
Been worth the wait. You get better every time Giving history a second chance and letting us have a look back in time . And let us not forget that behind every good man is a bloody great woman. Piccadilly Gardens was still a nice place in the early '90s. Hot summer days especially the gardens would be full of people sunbathing at lunchtime, eating chatting and relaxing. Yeah there was the odd drunk or beggar but they were nowhere near as prolific as today. I lived in Manchester 1990-200 worked at the City Road Inn opposite the Hacienda 1991-93. Now when I go back it's like going to London, all skyscrapers and coffee shops and homeless spiceheads being ignored by the normal people. Nowhere else I know is the Victorian wealth gap between rich and poor so obvious and in your face. Horrible place now. Sad.
So good to see you back DM. You never fail to produce excellent videos, always with wonderful tales of the from the past. I always think its such a sacrilege and disrespectful to build things over where people are laid to rest! Especially another car park! All those people forgotten about 😢

Wow, thanks so much to you both and please thank you mother from me. The support and kind words really mean a lot. I'm really glad you enjoy the content!
This was just riveting, you tell these historic stories really well, we all think times are hard today what with high prices of food and energy, but we have no idea how people suffered in those days, i didnt know any of these stories even though i was born and bred in the Manchester area, i live in Urmston and have looked up some of the history from around here, and it was mostly farmland and rural although there were one or two wealthy families here abouts, but i think had i lived in those days i would more than likely have ended up on that ducking stool, when i worked in town i ate my lunch in Picadilly gardens, who knew!.xxx
Thank you so much Suzanne! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you so much for watching. It’s unbelievable how many stories are actually under our feet! Thanks once again 👍🏼🙏🏼
That was hilarious! You started off all sympathetic saying 'You can't help how you look' then followed it straight up with the ugly tree comment! 😂😂 Another great vid! I didn't know any of this history.
I was born in Manchester, my parents came to live out in NZ in 1952 In the 70's as a young girl I came back to live in Manchester to discover where I came from, my Grand father who was in his 70's the same age I am now, took me all over Manchester telling me things of his childhood, a Manchester before cars and planes etc I used to work in Piccadilly and eat my lunch in those beautiful gardens, it was the most beautiful place in the middle of the city. I would love to visit Manchester again before I die, I have so many relatives buried in the great Southern cemetery, who knows I might end up there myself one day! Love your content, so interesting, some I already know but so much I do not, look forwaed to all your future posts, thank you so much!
Thanks once Again Anthony for a great video and telling us more about the History of Manchester being a Born and bread Mancuin myself there is still a lot of history that i don't know about. But watching your videos is giving me a Education about my Hometowns history. Keep up the great work. Michelle Gray Calgary Alberta Canada.
Oh what a rich history we have, Piccadilly gardens were beautiful back in the day, even in the 70s, I remember the murders at Mother Macs, it was front page news at the time, why do the council have to demolish beautiful buildings without a care? they call it progress, I call it deterioration, thank you for your respect for the past x
Big hello from Belfast Northern Ireland chum. Been a blue my whole life and my kids and theirs following in my footsteps. Obviously been to Manchester more times than I can count and just discovered you yesterday. Fantastic you really are. Been to Mother Mac’s many a time and was aware there was a murder but not to the detail you put into it there, grim to say the least. Looking forward to popping into the newly opened pub to see what they’ve done. Piccadilly gardens if only they could revert eh. Pretty grim atm though so much footfall with the buses, trams and Piccadilly station so close. Your delivery on these stories with very Manchester accent is just delightful and your passion for your city a treat. Chuffed I found your channel. Keep it up. 😊
Thank so much Michael, I’m really happy to know you enjoyed the video! Manchester has so many stories it’s unbelievable! Great to hear you found the channel and you have enjoyed the content! Cheers pal 👍🏼
Top video 👍🏻 keep em coming, all your videos are well put together. It’s good learning history of our local area and this video is educational for the young people who should know these things. Thanks for not letting people forget our history and people from the past, their memories deserve to live on. 👍🏻
Thanks so much. Cheers for the kind comment. I agree it’s so important for the younger generation to know about our local history! Thanks once again 👍🏼
Absolutely fantastic video, I didn’t know these stories so I learned something new. Your passion for Manchesters history comes through strongly. Piccadilly Gardens is my least favourite area of central Manchester by far. Characterless and ugly. They need to radically alter it, especially because it’s one of the first things visitors to Manchester see when they get off the train, which is shameful. Seeing the old pictures, not only of the flower gardens of the 50’s but also the older picture of the Asylum and all the gorgeous surrounding Victorian buildings makes me sad. That Asylum building was very impressive and would have made an incredible museum right in the heart of Manchester. Instead it’s gone, along with all those other old buildings and the later flower gardens and now we just have a concrete square with a concrete wall running through it.
Thanks so much for the kind comment. I really appreciate you taking the time out to watch the video and I am so glad you enjoyed it. I agree, the old Piccadilly looked stunning and it was a place that the whole of Manchester could enjoy. Thanks once again! Take care 🙏🏼👍🏼
DM again your content on these videos has given me goosebumps. I don’t know much about Manchester but when I visit I always think back to the your videos and the Scuttlers and Angel Meadows. You should get a job at the history museum as a storyteller. Breathtaking. Well done pal.
That’s really kind of you to say mate! I honestly really do appreciate the kind words. Hopefully one day something will come of them. Really glad you could connect with the video! Thanks for the support! 🙏🏼👍🏼 take care mate
Thanks for this..very interesting. Born in Hulme, ended up in Canada.I'm a bit scared to go back to visit Hulme because my Hulme no longer exists. Makes me sad. Time is fleeting, everthing changes. Thanks again for the video...
thanks so much. Sadly a huge section of manchester has now been totally transformed. so good and some bad. they are erasing the history without and care though and that's always a bad thing in my eyes. Thanks once again for watching Janet!
Ant, the quality of your work is amazing; this is just wonderful. I’d heard of the incident at Mother Mac’s but I didn’t know the detail - you tell the story beautifully. I love the info about St Andrew’s church. I have a relative buried in what is now a garden that’s part of UMIST - everything is gone. But fortunately UMIST have put up a plaque and advise people of the history and also ask students/visitors to be respectful in the garden as it is a burial ground. I hope people are respectful. As for Piccadilly Gardens, that’s so interesting - makes me wonder if that’s why over the years that place has always had a ‘bad atmosphere’. I worked in Sunley Tower (now Piccadilly Tower) in the ‘90s. Even though the gardens were still there then it wasn’t a nice place. As a woman, I can’t speak for others, but I never went and sat there because it was even then sadly full of drunks/homeless people. Entering what was supposed to be a shopping precinct at the base of Sunley Tower you had to hold your breath before entering because the stench of urine was overpowering. Drunks/drug addicts lay all over the floor trying to find some shelter/warmth and you sometimes had to step over them. Sadly, they were also begging and as a lone woman it frequently felt very intimidating. I always felt Piccadilly gardens area had a horrible feel/vibe. Was it better in the 50s? I don’t think so: my mum and dad both worked in Manchester then and when I worked there in the 90s my mum once refused to meet me in the Piccadilly Gardens entrance to Lewis’s because ‘that’s where the Prostitutes congregate. I was like ‘what the heck??’ but my mum in the ‘50s had arranged to meet my dad and had been ‘moved on’ by other women not wanting their ‘patch interfered with’ (*mind you, my mum did also take me on ‘short cut walks’ through Manchester’s backstreets which had me going ‘what the heck are you coming down here for? You’ll be lucky to make it out without being robbed!! 🤣). But I don’t think the Gardens has ever had a nice ‘vibe’ no matter what successive Councils have tried to do. All the Prostitutes were still there in the Gardens area and surrounding streets in the ‘90s, so much so the office once had a talk from the Police explaining the terrible lives those women had and asking people to understand the circumstances they were in and not be abusive (something that must have been very hard for young men being targeted on their way to the station.). Makes you wonder if the history of the ducking ponds has just tainted the whole place down the years. An excellent video, Ant; your work is amazing.
This was another brilliant film. I love your passion and the sympathetic way you tell the story of not just "our" Manchester, but , also our forefathers Manchester. Your cinematography is stunning. I think you've got a real gift. You transport us back in time, its tragically beautiful. I love it. Thank you.
Thanks for yet another haunting video. You have no idea how good you are. The saddest story for me was the church. The massacre and the dunkings were horrific, but the church brought tears to my eyes. History destroyed. 😢
Aww thanks so much Mandy! That really is very kind of you to say. Yeah, hard to imagine that these things went on isn’t it. Your support is much appreciated as always! 🙏🏼
Thanks so much Dave! I hope your well mate! And I’ve not forgotten about your parcel! I’ll be sending it off after I’ve been to the Salford game next week 👍🏼

ABSOLUTELY brill as ever Ant 👌🏻👌🏻 I heard or read somewhere, the old piccadilly gardens, how it was sunken in, was because it had been the cellars/underground/mortuary section of the hospital there!🤷🏼♀️ Not sure if this is so, cos I'm sure you would've mentioned it, the research you do. Top one Ant anyway. Worth waiting for again ☺️ xx
That was really insightful. As a Manc,I knew some of this history...you brought it to life. You, young man, are a born educator. I've subscribed and am looking forward to watching your back catalogue.

Thank you so much Michelle! I’m so glad you feel the connection given your all the way in Canada 🇨🇦! How amazing!
Love these stories DM 💯💯 , its shocking the state of piccadilly gardens, shocking and embarrassing. Nice one for keeping these stories alive 💯💯🔥🔥👊👊
I agree mate , something has to change. God knows what people visiting the city must think.
Thanks for watching too! I hope you're good mate!
That was the most intriguing and informative video about Manchester I've ever seen. Excellent work, and thank you so much. Keep up the good work 👏
Thank you so much! I’m really glad you enjoyed it 👍🏼⭐️
DM again your content on these videos has given me goosebumps.
I love it. Thank you.
Thanks you so much Ali. That’s very kind of you to say and I really do appreciate it. So glad you enjoyed the video 🙏🏼
Facinating, thank you
Thanks for yet another haunting video.

It wouldn’t surprise me Tina! Nothing does anymore 😂 there’s so much history and horrible stories to uncover I can’t keep up! 😂 thanks for watching 🙏🏼
That was really insightful. As a Manc,I knew some of this history...you brought it to life. You, young man, are a born educator. I've subscribed and am looking forward to watching your back catalogue.

Great work Ant .
As always such a well produced piece of work .
You are a legend mate. I could become very addicted to the history that you impart in the video's. I've subscribed and sent the link to my family WhatsApp group. All Mancunians/Salfordians and some Americans with roots back here in Manchesteer. They love the honesty and the accent. And in the words of some actor who did an action packed film once, "I'll be back"!!!!
