I've recently finished my career, retirement is an odd word. I can tell you that 40+ years after I finished my degree, I could never have predicted where the path would take me. In hindsight I can tell you that this zig zag career path took me exactly where I needed to be to find my passion. Good luck on your journey, don't forget to explore the forks in the road.

This plus you never know if actually working on your degree will make you happy for the next 40+ years. You might like it but after a few years you might not enjoy it anymore or the pressure will become too much to deal with and you might find a new passion. There is nothing wrong with that and you shouldn't limit yourself to what you can do

This is probably one of the best comments I've read online. So inspiring, and calming too. I read so many stories about finding / chasing your dreams, knowing your calling, but then embracing the twists and turns it's something else, and so important. Thank you so much!

Dear Ruby and all other viewers this may concern:
NEVER ever let anyone tell you that you shouldn't live with your parents, that you're too attached to your parents or that you should be embarrassed living with your parents.
I lost my parents super early and now, at an age where I could be a parent to most of you myself, I'd give an arm and a leg to have my parents back. A good relationship with your parents is special, unique and unlike anything you'll ever have in your life.
Cherish it, embrace it, be proud of if and protect it at all cost. And NEVER apologize for it!

I spent my late teens, all of my twenties and early thirties studying medicine, specialties and subspectialites, and at the end of it all when I finally got all the degrees, I had an existential crisis, and am now “finding myself” among other things. Congratulations to you on finishing your degree and best of luck!

In my country to be with your parents till 30 years old or even more is very normal! People work and study but still live with their parents and that's totally fine! I hope this stigma will disappear soon, there's nothing wrong in living with your parents as an adult 😊

Ruby, I'm so glad you happily addressed the stigma against staying at home to figure things out properly and not being 100% certain about an occupation and lifestyle. It brings me so much comfort to know that others are like this, and I've always believed this sort of thing is so much better than quickly making an ill-informed, life changing decision due to pressure than taking a bit of time to discern what's truly right for you. (I'm studying liberal arts with an emphasis on Humanities in university, and am in the same boat, though I know I want to do something within that field, whether it be a local museum curator to some sort of official community service position.) Can't wait to see all of your upcoming content, and I'll always be supporting you over here in the US! 😄

Why not just take a job right after and try it and if you don't like it then leave the job? Idk but in my country you can leave a job without even giving a reason with the leave time being usually 1month (so if you inform your boss for one more month you may be legally obliged to work that job if your boss wants you there until he can find someone instead of you) and then you can just try another job

I feel sad/ relieved for my mental health because for years it’s been under pressure by the system. It’s been under pressure because of the deadlines and expectations. I’m finally free but yet I don’t know what to do with my life. I don’t know where to go next and that’s beautiful but yet so scary ♥️

@@romycullen17 As someone diagnosed with ADHD as a child and diagnosed again last year, at 26, I thought I could also share my journey. It was difficult for me to complete university degree and it took me four years instead of standard three and two changes of majors (switched from Italian to Russian and Polish and ended up earning BA degree in just Polish Philology). After that, I have switched majors and universities almost every year, I have spent some time pursuing degree in Social Work, Education, Gerontagogy, Polish again, Veterinary Nurse and Management. And since ADHD usually comes with other mental health problems I could not focus on both school and work. I was very anxious to attend in class lectures, because I did not want to meet other people, so I was missing all of the classes, while thinking that I was a failure. Last week I have started online MSc. in Marketing, while teaching languages online as my main source of income.
Studying online and choosing the time when I want to study, while limiting myself to finish maximum of three 20-minute lessons per day was great option for me, since I have a short attention span and I am focused in many different topics, In addition to pursuing degree in Marketing, I also attend classes on Cybersecurity, Online Teaching, Graphic Design and Programming, which can be all used while working on my Marketing projects.
You are not alone and I wish you could find study path that suits you the best :)

Congratulations, Ruby!! Taking a gap year between your undergrad degree and your Master's is a wise decision; I did the same, and that year gave me time to work in the world, pay off my undergrad student loans, and really look into graduate programs. I ended up returning to work as a bookseller again -- which was my first job while still in high school. My former manager from the mall bookstores I worked at through my last year of high school and my first three years of undergrad had taken a new job at the bookstore in the Harcourt Brace publishing company in downtown San Diego, and when I dropped in to visit him, he offered me a job, and I happily took it. (I had tried two jobs after graduating, and neither one worked out.) Working in a publishing company was so fun, even if we were the street-level bookshop at the base of the Harcourt Brace's building. Sometimes the children's book editors came in to show us some of the original artwork for the picture books -- soooooo beautiful!! And we had several important personages and authors do book signings in our store, including journalist John Chancellor and author Alice Walker (whom I met just before the pandemic at my undergrad university's Writer's Symposium by the Sea.)
SIDE NOTE: If you want to watch some **amazing** author interviews on the art of writing, check out the Writer's Symposium by the Sea's webpage at the University of California San Diego's media site: ucsd.tv/writers -- the interviewer is my former creative writing professor and later office mate when I returned to my undergrad univ as an adjunct instructor. Interviewees include Ray Bradbury, poets Billy Collins, Nikki Giovanni, and Robert Pinsky, authors Amy Tan, Joyce Carol Oates, George Plimpton, Joseph Wambaugh, journalists Dick Enberg and Bill Moyers, social justice pioneers such as Dr. Cornel West and others, plus Christian writers Anne Lamott (her book Bird by Bird is one of the best books on writing EVER -- and her dry wit makes it a highly enjoyable as well as a highly informative and practical read), Philip Yancey, Eugene Peterson, Donald Miller, and the late and much-missed Rachel Held Evans. This is such a treasure-trove of wisdom and practicalities regarding the art of writing -- I highly recommend it to all of my writing friends. Plus, I have attended about a quarter of the sessions over the years.
Anyway, that "gap year" spent working and also resting from academic pursuits really refreshed me and enabled me to enter my graduate program in English Lit with a refreshed mind and enthusiasm for my studies. I worked as a research assistant to the department chair, Dr. Elizabeth Walsh (Harvard Ph.D.), and in addition to paying for a third of my tuition, Dr. Walsh included me as a co-author of the book I had helped her to research!! I focused on filling my undergrad gaps, so my main focus was medieval literature (Dr. Walsh's area), plus seminars on Milton, Collette, Irish Literature, and many more intriguing seminars. When I finished my Master's, I returned to working at the bookstore for a bit, taught German at my grad school, and then started at my undergrad university as an adjunct. Taking that gap year was extremely important, and I am so glad I took it. I even made a short trip to the UK (three weeks) during that gap year and visited the homes of so many of the literary heroes. My hope is to visit Concord in the next couple of years and soak in the Transcendentalist vibes of Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, Melville, and the Alcotts, especially the latter. ;)
I am so glad that we will be able to accompany you on your gap year adventures!! Thank you for your generosity of spirit in inviting all of us thousands into your home and your work. It's truly an oasis of tranquility in my life!! Now, off to go respond to poems written by my online poetry workshop classes @BraveWriter!! :D
Wishing you a restful yet productive summer,
    Susanne :D

Just to put it out there - not everyone is in the same boat. A lot of finishing students need to have a job lined up because they don't have the option of their family supporting them straight out of university. It's great that you do have that, but a lot of people will take whatever jobs they can get using their degree (or not) to pay rent, and it's hard, but it's okay to pick up what you can to keep yourself going! It can give you time to look around for a job you're looking for more long term, and the experience is a great application point!

Awww! Congratulations Ruby!!! There may be different periods of your life where you won't know what you are doing. It can last for years. And THAT is okay.
When people have just graduated, I will ask them what they are doing next. Selfishly, it is partly to live vicariously through them and partly it's to see if what they are pursuing is something I might me interested in. It's never meant to put pressure on them. So keep that in mind when people ask.

I, too, took a year off after graduation to hone my writing skills. I celebrate six years of that leap of faith on Monday, 16th May.
I can tell you from experience that taking a year off to work on myself and my writing skills was the best decision I have ever taken. Things didn't unfold as I had planned but something even better happened instead. Now I finally have the courage to write my mystery novels and share it with the world.
I send you my best wishes for your year of discovery!

Congratulations on finishing your degree! Re: the growing up thing. Exactly - it's absolutely not as scary as you might think when you're young. When you're a kid it might seem like grown ups always know what to do and always have the answers, and it can be hard to imagine yourself ever being like that. But that's the thing - no one is! Everyone is figuring things out as they go and just doing the best they can, and that's all you need to do. And a lot of the time, things that seem like a huge deal really aren't as important or as scary as you think.

As a fellow 22 year-old who is currently on a gap year, I think your plans sound great! 22 is probably my favourite age so far (aside from when I was a little kid). I'm travelling a lot and in the process am learning so much about myself and what I want in life outside of academia / a career. Only now I've started to realise how important a work life balance is for me. Uni was such a big part of my life and I didn't prioritise a social life or my million hobbies. I've now realised how much value they add to my life and how happy they make me. I love my subject, but I need the other things as well to feel happy and fulfilled.
I'd actually love to take a second gap year before going back to uni to get my master's because right now I'm not in the position to do my best and give it my all. Unfortunately my parents are not on board with this plan, so I'll have to figure something out in the next few weeks.

I’m finally getting close to my dream job which I could never say before. Moving abroad to New Zealand for a year is what helped me make this decision coz it forced me to leave a job I hated and when I came home to a pandemic with no job I thought it was the perfect time to go back to college and start fresh! Best of luck on your gap year and your travels. It’ll be such an amazing experience! Also can’t wait to read your book whenever it comes out😆

I am so glad you now have some well deserved down time. Spending downtime wisely can be much harder than a lot of people believe. As an idler and flâneur of some renown, my down time is the only thing in my life that I schedule.
Eleven years ago, I had a massive head injury, it took a few years to recover from. It was my neurologist that suggested I go on line and look at ways to plan my life. The first two I watched were you and Jordan Peterson. He told me how to live a planned, directed life and you lived the planned and directed life. So, from the time you were around fifteen or sixteen I've dipped in and out of your life, with the books you've read, letters you've written etc. and it has always calmed my mind. Obviously, I had to keep it a secret from friends, I didn't want to be thought of as some sort of Humbert Humbert stalker. So, a big thank you for getting me through my trauma. You keep journals, so here is a little payback.
When in Italy, I expect you will go to Venice. At the top of San Marco is Caffé Florian, it's expensive, but have a lunch there, it is the most exquisite café and has been since 1720. On the opposite side of the square is a shop the sign says 'Record' which is notebooks and journals. They sell 'Legitoria Koine' leather and fabric bound journals, and the paper is divine. A 17 X 24 cm, 270 leaf journal lasts me about a year and my handwriting is large and written with a medium Mont Blanc nib. They cost about €30. They also sell dip pen supplies. If you really like the journals then travel to Montepulciano, about an hour from Florence, where they have their own shop, and visit Gabriella, if she still works there, and watch some of the construction of the journals. Thanks for changing the way I, attempt, to plan my life better, but at sixty-two, I doubt the change will be great or necessary. I worked in the police for many years and schools since and so many people have such negativity about the youth of today, yet the majority that I met are pleasant and industrious, like yourself. Lisa Duncan-Purcell's wise words below are much more succinct than mine, but well worth adhering to. Congratulations if anyone makes it this far. Find your passion, never stop travelling, and speaking to strangers.

I'm turning 23 this month and I'm about to finish my first year of uni which means I'm beyond a couple years compared to my peers (because of family issues) and it often throws me off balance. I feel like I'm growing up too fast but have nothing to back up my age, as in no academic achievements or significant contributions in general to myself or anybody else. I'm ALWAYS being asked what I plan to do in the future, like constantly, and that just increases the burden I've already put on myself. That's why I've come to dread the question "What now?" "What next?". The way you face life and take one step at a time and don't rush for others but live at your own pace somehow brings me some peace of mind and makes me feel a little less useless and less of a burden to myself. Your videos and your genuinity restore in me the will to accomplish my goals without worrying about the expectations the people around me have for me. After all, I'm the one most affected by my choices and if I'm going to need more time than others to reach my goals then so be it. I will start setting my own pace and stop letting others hold me back or rush me forward. So thank you for being so genuine, calming, comforting, and truly wonderful. By the way, I'm from Italy so if you decide to come here I hope you have a wonderful experience.

I'm just a tad younger than you, and also feel this is a sort of "old age" haha, not because it is, but it just sounds like it is in comparison to childhood! I need to leave with my parents due to the pandemic, but also can't drive yet just because of scheduling! I really feel a kindred spirit to you and it honestly does make me feel better to hear your thoughts too, as I'm in a somewhat similar place to you, and love your view on success. Thank you so much!

This moment is a crossroads in life, for you and your peers. It has been the same for countless others and will be for yet more in future.
There are some that would have you make a concrete decision, whilst others would say go with the flow, and others still would say do something entirely different. Ultimately, there is no right or wrong in any of those options - you must choose and try what you wish; if something feels right, go with it and run with it. If it doesn't, that's how you find out who and what you are, over all your life. Good luck and congratulations for making it through the degree, in any case!

I studied sociology and labor studies. And now, we are in the same boat! I still don’t know what I want to do. I’m currently working at a nonprofit, but I know that I won’t stay there for much longer. I’m interested in entertainment, acting, writing, and advocacy. So I have a long road ahead of me lol. Glad society has arrived at a point where our generation doesn't have to follow just one career path. If we're privileged enough we're able to try different things, studies, jobs and figure it out and find ourselves on the way.
Personally I still struggle with what hobby I should go after and make a (first) career, because I love doing such different things. But I'm going to start walking one path this year in uni and am glad I can always stop on that walk and reflect on if this is what I want to do. Starting and trying out things is everything so as long as I'm moving forward I think it'll be alright.
And to anyone reading this: You got this, there is still time to try out things and learn something new. ❤

Hi Ruby, I have finished my degree over a week ago.. and I am still in the denial process.. I just can't realise and a part of me doesn't want to realise, that it's all over.. and coming to an end. And how unplanned, unsheltered and unpredictable the next stage and years of our lives will be.. as no one prepares us for it! I guess I just need some time, to just be in it, focusing on the present, revisiting these places that I won't have access to anymore.. and slowly, it'll be okay. It will be fine, as I do have the skills to go into the real world.. I have unconsciously been preparing for this moment at each stage of leaving school.. just need to Have Faith in Myself .. and keep being Proactive, Optimistic and calm! 16:26 sun 15/05
