    I was a missionary when I stumbled across JS Sr.'s dream. I was shocked and wondered why this was never covered in church.

    I am an active member of the church, and I always watch your other RFM shows plus the ones with Bill Reel and others. I have been a member all my life , coming from people who joined in Missouri and crossed the plains. I do not intend to leave the church. That said, I still am very aware of the flaws of the church and the people who lead. I too have questioned things through the years. I think this is an amazing lesson and I also loved the artwork. I do not know the answer to the similarities, but they definitely are there. Please keep providing this alternative for those of us who are open minded thinkers.

    I wonder what Lucy was thinking by retelling the dream. Could she not see how it would point to Joseph Jr looking like a fraud? So many of the earliest players in Mormon history appear credulous beyond compare.

    In high school, I had art class in the mornings after seminary. I made an oil pastel drawing of the tree of life vision, thinking I had a cool and original idea. Guess not, lol. My idea was as original as... Lehi's dream. 😂

    Did anyone else pray very sincerely as a child to be shown this dream because of what it says in Nephi? Or was that just me? Lol I really thought if I prayed hard enough I would get to see this oh so special dream too, but when that didn’t happen I decided it was either because I wasn’t faithful enough or because God didn’t need me (a girl with zero priesthood power or influence in this system) to see it. Breaks my heart for little me now.

  • @Alaneberhard
    @Alaneberhard 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    ExMo here. RFM, just an observation. Could another possibility be that JS Sr. actually had a dream in 1811 and when she later described it, she used some of the verbiage of the dream in 1 Nephi? This seems most likely to me if we allow that JS Sr. had a dream of some sort to begin with.
    Either way, JS Jr. still could have used dad’s dream as a crib.

    I'm really mad that Brigham Young banned Lucy Mack Smith's original book. He went out of his way to stop her speaking the truth. Brigham was a dictator control freak. The case for the BoM being a literal translation is collapsing. If the church just admitted from the beginning that the BoM was historical fiction/allegory, we would not be in this same predicament. This goes 2 ways, with the church losing credibility in both. 1. They maintain the book is a literal translation (and all that comes with that) and it is proven otherwise, or 2. With the preponderance of evidence, they shift to it being historical fiction/allegory.
    This was a great lesson. I had never heard about this 1811 account of JS Sr.’s dream. Strikingly similar to Levi’s dream.
    I think a fascinating analysis would be to prove if Nephi is really just Joseph Smith writing himself into the text, as a hero/historical figure. Maybe it’s been done.
    Keep it up RFM.

    The man dressed in white who told Lehi to follow him, led him into a dreary wilderness….about a year ago I came to the conclusion that the man dressed in white is a lds church leader in the temple….it wasn’t until Lehi turned to god that he was led out of that wilderness and eventually to God, the fruit/tree of life.

  • @jhonea66
    @jhonea66 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I think it was Bryce Blankenagel who said JS Sr’s description of the fruit greatly resembles a datura plant. Not the first time psychoactive substances have been posited as the catalyst for those early “spiritual” experiences in the church.

  • @John-re7dd
    @John-re7dd 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    As I was listening to this I think I saw another plot hole in the BOM. Lehi saw Sariah, Nephi and Sam at the tree but not Laban and Lemuel. Later in the story we find that Nephi had sisters (2 Nephi 5:6). Why didn't Lehi wish his daughters were there, or at least not mention them? Surely if he named all of his family by name he would mention his daughters? JS senior mentioned his seven children, at least those he had at the time which by the number included his daughters, but not JS in the BOM. does anyone else see this as a plot hole?

    I’m PIMO and I’ve really enjoyed these CFM lessons. I enjoy the perspective and venturing into paths not discussed in church. One point of analysis coming from this episode is from FAIR options. In option, 3 RFM compared mixing real experiences with fiction from the BoM. IMO it is closer to mixing up a fictional story told by aunt Betty with the fictional story in the BoM. The experience of hearing aunt Betty tell the story is real but the story itself is fictional. It requires one to keep the details of 2 fictional story separate and not mix them. So I can see how option 3 can be used by FAIR. The fact that the 2 stories are similar but still different enough, I lean towards JS jr used the story as influence for the BoM. One just simply has to ask: If the BoM is true, original, and authentic then why does JS Sr have a similar story (with different details) to that of what is in the BoM at all?

  • @griz4089
    @griz4089 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    If FAIR suggested it was a coincidence then they would immediately be disregarded. Also to immediately discredit the 3rd counter on Lucy you have to remember she’s writing this down 33 years later about a dream Joseph Sr had. How many times did Joseph Sr talk about his dream? What if he had a dream about getting lost in a field, but then found a rope that lead him to some fruit. I could see how that eventually becomes the story Lucy writes down. Lucy writes it like he’s telling her in the moment or transposing it from a journal but if it’s from memory it’s 33 years of memory decay… unless you all can remember stuff way better then me from 30 years ago.

    I don't have a problem with the dreams.
    * No second source for the Joseph Smith Sr dream. No other mentions of it by any of the large Smith family, in-laws, friends, other church members, etc. No one mentions it.
    * Lucy Mack Smith was recalling this dream at 70 yrs old, having only recently buried two of her sons --victims of crime.
    Sorry RFM, there's no smoking gun here. No offense to the Smith Brothers.

    43:06 great analysis except for the attempted debunking of LMS potentially mixing up a dream of her husband’s with the BOM account. Love you, RFM, but your framing as mixing up story with real life is a clear straw man, when what is suggested is confusing two different dreams. It happens all the time, and especially in an early frontier superstitious context, it’s really not unlikely at all. You’ve got to present an actual argument rather than just mock what the idea as being ridiculous.

    All of Joseph Sr's kids were born in Vermont, from 1797 up until - Birth: of Katharine Smith 28 July 1813. Lebanon, Grafton, "New Hampshire", United States.
    The birth: of Don Carlos Smith, 25 March 1816 Norwich, Windsor, back in "Vermont", United States. The family left Vermont in 1816.
    Then Lucy Smith their last child was born 18 July 1821 Manchester, Ontario, "New York", United States.
    Joseph Smith Sr. should have been in Vermont in 1811 when he supposedly had that dream in NY????????
    He was in Vermont, likely participating in the New Israelites.

    Lucy Max Smith's account of the dream can not be trusted because the fact that it was recorded decades later than it supposedly happened makes it unreliable. You haven't presented any record of the dream when it happened. Also, you have not presented any record that was made at the time that Joseph Smith heard this about this dream.

I watched two episodes and am disappointed that you misrepresented principles clearly taught by the church and easily found on the churches website. But then it's not your intention to honestly portray the churches beliefs. I mean the name of your channel is a lie. Two scriptures for you, words of our Savior, Jesus Christ. "Ye shall know them by their fruits." (Matthew 7:16). "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." (John 13:35).

      Kenny, could it be that the principles “clearly taught by the church and easily found on its website” don’t actually reflect what the text says but what the leaders want the members to believe it says? Radio Free Mormon clearly discloses on the thumbnail and at the beginning of each episode that this is not what you’ll learn in SS. When an honestly mistaken man sees the truth, one of two things happens: (1) he will either cease to be mistaken, or (2) he will cease to be honest. For he will either accept the truth or he will reject it. If he accepts it, he is no longer mistaken; if he rejects it, he is no longer honest. It is as simple as that. There cannot be such a thing as an “honestly mistaken man” who has once seen the truth.
