The scene is Edison International Field, for the first playoff game in Anaheim since 1986. But Angels' starter Ramon Ortiz was knocked out of the box in the third inning as the Yankees jumped to a 6-1 lead. Most other teams would just give up and bow to the Yankees' aura of invincibility. Not these Angels. Anaheim scored two in the third then one in the fourth. Down one run in the 7th, K-Rod came on after John Lackey pitched three innings, and was much sharper this time. He retired the Yankees 1-2-3. Then, after Scott Spiezio tied it in the bottom half, Rodriguez pitched another perfect inning in the 8th. Six in a row against the potent Yankees. Then, the fans went bananas with the Rally Monkey and the thunder sticks as the Angels scored three runs to go ahead, capped by Tim Salmon's home run. Percival set the Yankees down in the 9th and the Halos won, 9-6 to take a two games to one lead in the series. But we shouldn't jump the gun yet. After all, my A's took a two game lead on the Yankees going home the year before and came away empty handed. Speaking of the A's, they silenced the Metrodome crowd with four home runs. Ray Durham (inside-the-park) and Scott Hatteberg opened the game with dingers and behind Barry Zito, the A's beat the Twins, 6-3, to take a 2-1 lead in games. Now, the strong possibility of an all-California ALCS is within reach. Just one more win for each, and it's reality.
Scioscia kept running Ortiz out there, but Lackey was the one with the temperment for the post-season. I was so glad Scioscia chose Lackey for Game #7 in the World Series and not Ramon.
This person has only WS games and other playoff series the Angels have won. On the other hand, I have uploaded all playoff games up until the mid-2000s. Here's my playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLa0JHTvvALYdN-t6rcAQykZIWAtwrvpCT.html
I know the angles were chipping away at mussina. However when I saw they took out mussina for weaver I knew the yankees were gonna blow that game. Weaver was very erratic & inconsistent that whole year & even into the 2003 season also. This game was the game they needed to assure them game 5 back at Yankee stadium with clemens pitching.

3:49:35 Yankee pitching kept hanging curveballs against Tim Salmon in this series, and he continued to hammer them.

When you don't play good outfield defense, teams who play small ball usually find a way to win. :)
