There was a rule change for the 1986 series m. This was the first series since the DH was used in the series to go by home team rule. Prior to this the DH had been used in even number years in all games since 1976. So if the previous rule had been in place we would have had the DH for all games in 1986.

And this game was suspended according to the rule book. If a visiting team ties or takes the lead in an inning after the game becomes official and the home team has not had a chance or has not completed their turn at bat the game shall be considered a suspended game. Selig took a lot of grief saying he made up a rule when in fact that rule has been in the rule book for a long time

If today’s rules regarding suspended games in the postseason had been in effect this game gets suspended and resumed the next night. Even though the game was official Kuhn didn’t want to have a rain shortened game in the World Series

My dad, Paul Hemphill, wrote the novel Long Gone on which the movie is based. I remember especially the Summer of 1975 when he was working on the manuscript and would read to me what he had just written. My dad's first novel. So much of the movie's dialogue is lifted straight from the novel. He didn't write the screenplay, hence the opening credit. My dad lasted four days with the Graceville Oilers class D team in Graceville, Florida before he realised, as a new high school grad, that his one dream, to play pro ball, was over. The Jamie Weeks character is an expression of my dad at that age with all his hopes and dreams. The Stud Cantrell character is an expression of my dad's psyche in middle age. He was excited when the movie filmed. He visited the set, met Bill Petersen, and brought me home an HBO satin warmup jacket. There was an article in Life magazine about my dad's brief sojourn through class D ball in the panhandle of Fla. We traveled through Florida for the Life piece. My magazine photo debut, at the age of 8ish? playing catch w my dad on the infield of the old Graceville ball park.

This series and the 1986 world series are the only two heart breaking series that are worse than the Cubs heart breaking NLCS series of 1984 and 2003. At least the Cubs were not one strike away from winning their series only to lose the series like the Angels and Red Sox did.
