For simple explanation this is a method to keep and carry fire in ancient times in the form of a smouldering ember. For example in Europe they use tinder mushroom. This way you will be able to transport fire over the distance and start fire quickly and in any condition even in damp condition. Fun fact, fire-making method using the drill and other similar stuff is nearly impossible if not difficult when the weather is damp or raining...I know because I've tried and was using a battery powered electric drill just for fun of experiment.

I watch a lot of Chinese dramas, and this explains how they got that fire in the little wooden tube. I was always curious about that and thought it was just like not true or real but it is. Thank you so much for showing us how that was made and done.

Wow, this is super cool! I have only seen these in Chinese dramas or movies set in ancient times. Glad to know that’s how it’s made in real life!
3:14 gonna have to try this technique next time a roll a joint XD
Seriously need English subs, we have no clue what the ingredients are
Pretty sure I know.
The vine at the beginning is sweet potato vine.
The white fluffy stuff is cotton.
The wrapping is paper or cotton and I don't think it should matter which.
The powders are likely to be as follows:
Potassium nitrate is the smouldering reaction's oxidizer.
Resin acts as fuel for the reaction and when the cap is lifted, allows for a yellow flame without consuming the stick. Pine should work.
Sulfur acts a catalyst to make the material smoulder at a lower temperature.
Bicarbonate of soda, baking soda which acts to slow the combustion reaction.
I'd try adding a little sugar if I were to make one.
没事,你可以学中文,就像我们学英文一样。

WOur Chinese ancestors invented it a thousand years ago. I'm excited to see how it's made.
It's an amber carrier, lots of cultures around the world had something similar.
@@satoshiarcher153nope. It's not invented by the Chinese. Lots of cultures had something similiar to carry amber abound for easy access to fire.

好強的發明,在那個沒有科技的古代,要做出這种東西,是要經歷過多少人,多少次的實驗,研究,測試才能完成,雖然現代已經用不到了,但這項手藝值得要好好保存😊

I always curious about this 'Lighter' gadget I saw in Chinese historical dramas. Now, I understood the technique yet the actors took out the gadget and blew some air to light it up without source of fire? If it can start by itself without fire source, it would be great 😌
I have seen this item featured in so many historical dramas and couldn't understand how it actually worked. This is fascinating. Thank you for the amazing video. I wish the components were listed somewhere in English.
The vine at the beginning is sweet potato vine.
The white fluffy stuff is cotton.
The wrapping is paper or cotton and I don't think it should matter which.
As for the powders, i cant tell you amounts but I know three of the four ingredients.
Potassium Nitrate
Sulfur
Resin, pine should work
Good luck on #4
Edit:
I believe I have figured out the 4th ingredient. It appears to be baking soda.
The potassium nitrate is the smouldering reaction's oxidizer.
The resin acts as fuel for the reaction and when the cap is lifted, allows for a yellow flame without consuming the stick.
The sulfur acts a catalyst to make the material smoulder at a lower temperature.
The bicarbonate of soda, baking soda which acts to slow the combustion reaction.
I might also add some sugar to act as a more pure source of fuel in addition to the resin but perhaps there's a reason they don't.
Have fun!
@@wowdanalise @MrArthoz has a list too, in the replies
It didn't work that's why he didn't show it. The fire was supposed to go out when he put the lid on from lack of oxygen. But the ember is supposed to be smoldering inside. When the lid is removed oxygen flows into the tube the fire is supposed to flare back up. But it didn't work.

I don't have idea of which ingredients have you used but this look amazing, Chinese ancestor knowed a lot !
😊硝酸盐和易燃物,黑火药被我们古代道士发现的
But i dont get how in drama they can just light it up by blowing, not using fire beforehand.
That's because the fire is smoldering inside the roll.. So by blowing oxygen into it, the flame gets reignited.
Avenue X mentioned the flame sticks used in dramas are simply disposable lighters in disguise. The actor flicks a tiny switch unseen to the audience to ignite the magic flame.

Magic wall powder 🧐
Its effloresence or salt. Moisture can cause it to disolve out of brick, concrete, stone, etc building materials, and when the moisture evaporates it leaves a residue on the surface. No idea what purpose it serves in his thingamajig.

In America we are such a very young country as far as European transplants and unfortunately our Native peoples wisdom is all almost lost. We may need these types of ideas again someday so thank you for sharing.
Plenty of natives were and are willing to share knowledge. There is still information out there you just have to look.
Mostly because the majority of the population thought us lesser humans and "savages" and tried to wipe us and all traces of us away. All because the government wanted our livelihoods and the land we lived on and were willing to share. But considering they stole some things and outlawed the rest, I understand it's hard to find.
I'm taking note too, because I know I've seen these before. And don't disparage yourself about native knowledge, just go and learn your attitude will be welcomed.

Love... Much Appreciated to Learn Ancient Wisdom, Knowledge and Life Skill Practices xox. Is That Sweet Potato Leaves @0:50? I'm so sad I can't read Chinese and no translated subtitles for the ingredients and materials used :(
Potato vines.
The materials for making fire folds are divided into three parts:
1. Container "bamboo tube, paper (cut to the same size as the bamboo tube)"
2. Tinder "tree vine (melon vine) fiber, cotton, reed tassels (or similar plant tassels) )"
3. Fire "turpentine (or flammable resin such as cedar resin), camphor (similar resins will also work), sulfur, saltpetre (saltpeter or nitrate)"
In ancient times, you preferred to use lit peat and wrapping it with fresh plant leaves to preserve fire.
