It is amazing to be able to spin thread from the strong washi paper and weave it into a stole. The routine work of making washi paper is great. Peeling the dried washi paper from the board also seems to be a pleasant experience. I would like to try both. I think the ancient Japanese people who came up with this process of making washi paper are amazing.
This Washi Koso I've seen used innumerable times to face painting in order to stabilize the paint layer from separating from the canvas during restoration. It is simply amazing when paired with fish gelatin glue during the process. Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration shows its many uses.

Paper was introduced to japan in the 7th century from China. In about 805 the japanese improved the papermaking proces by adding mucilage (slimy plant stuf) to the paper slurry, thus creating the first japanese washi. Most well known type of washi paper is washi kozo, made from the kozo tree (paper mullberry). Recommend reading the wiki page on washi, it's pretty interesting.
I watch an art restoration channel (Baumgartner) that relies on the use of this paper in his work and it's very interesting to see how washi kozo is made

The bundles of dried strips are rinsed again, probably mostly to soften them up. The lady hangs them back up, while flattening every strand, then dries them again (?) I assume the rewetting is needed to be able to flatten out the strips. Hanging the wet strips in sunlight also has a bleaching effect, making the colour of the strips more bright.
it's just a description oversight in the script. So what you're seeing at 4:36 is rehydrating the ribbons of bast fiber. This is to clean and soften them. Prior to 4:36 you see the old lady in the canal removing the bark

65年ほど前に中国安徽省で作られた最高級の和紙を30センチほど保管していますが、このような工程がある事を何も知りませんでした。尊いですね。大切にして次の世代に託します。
紙漉きの職人もそうだけど、道具職人も居なくなってきてるから結構ギリギリの産業なんですよね…
私の故郷も製紙業が盛んなのですが、やはり手漉きは廃れてきてしまいました。
どうしても機械漉きの方が早くて安価だし、手漉き和紙が活躍する場も限られているので仕方ないところはありますが…子供の頃に見学でお邪魔させて頂いた製紙所も畳んでしまったり寂しい気持ちが大きいです。
でもこうして手漉きしている光景が見られて、何だか懐かしい気持ちになれました。
