Autism Physical Signs Different In Girls with Autism

  • CLIPPERS: link.heropost.... - Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects individuals in different ways and can manifest differently in girls compared to boys. Girls with autism may exhibit physical signs that are distinct from those seen in boys. While autism is generally associated with deficits in social communication and interaction, repetitive behaviors, and restricted interests, there are several physical signs that can also be indicative of autism in girls.
One of the most prominent physical signs of autism in girls is delayed or atypical motor development. Girls with autism may have difficulty with gross motor skills, such as running, jumping, or throwing, or fine motor skills, such as writing, drawing, or using utensils. They may also exhibit a lack of coordination and balance, which can affect their ability to participate in physical activities or sports.
Another physical sign of autism in girls is a difference in sensory processing. Girls with autism may be more sensitive to certain types of sensory input, such as loud noises or bright lights, and may become overwhelmed or agitated by sensory overload. Alternatively, they may seek out sensory stimulation, such as spinning or jumping, to regulate their sensory experiences.
Girls with autism may also exhibit physical symptoms related to anxiety, such as fidgeting, pacing, or biting their nails. They may struggle with transitions and changes in routine, which can lead to increased anxiety and physical symptoms.
Finally, girls with autism may exhibit physical signs related to communication difficulties. They may have atypical facial expressions or body language, which can make it difficult for others to interpret their emotions or intentions. They may also have difficulty with eye contact, which can make it challenging to engage in social interactions.
In conclusion, autism can present differently in girls compared to boys, and physical signs can be a key indicator of autism in girls. Delayed or atypical motor development, differences in sensory processing, physical symptoms related to anxiety, and communication difficulties are just a few of the physical signs that may be present in girls with autism. Early recognition and intervention can help girls with autism receive the support and services they need to thrive.

Females who are autistic can have physical problems with balance, dizziness, tiredness, pain. Sometimes this is caused by EDS and POTS. If you are sick with unknown illnesses or fibromyalgia it may actually be one or both of these illnesses. Occasionally males have this as well. POTS is easier to prove to the doctors. I was sick for 10 years and couldn't find out why until I read about POTS under an autism video!

Every single time i watch your videos I'm saying, "Yup, definitely my daughter"! But because she has ADHD, generalized anxiety, and depression, she gets a negative diagnosis. I will be honest, I never even suspected ASD because I didn't know enough about it. Once I started researching after having a million other tests done, all of our light bulbs went on and we had huge aha moments! She's definitely on the spectrum! 18 years old, just had the test, and we were told she wasn't! Extremely frustrating! When she explained the tests that they did, the one was almost laughable because they gave her a bag of toys to play with and part of the test was to see what she would do when the toys were taken away! Seriously? She's not four, she's 18 years old! She has learned to mask and what social cues to follow and she knows not to have a temper tantrum when toys are taken away! With her diagnoses that she got she'll still qualify for accommodations in college but of course she wants the validation and the diagnosis on paper. I think it's going to be years of testing and a lot of money and it's really quite ridiculous! How can they determine she's not when they only spent 2 hours with her, we're out of the room half the time, and don't see how she is in her real life! Thank you for your videos, validation, differences explained, and everything you do! It's been very enlightening!

So interesting. My husband was mildly autistic and our youngest son likewise. I have long wondered about myself, and so much of what you describe hits home for me. I have not cut my hair since I was 11. I'm 66. I'm a hair twiddler and hate to even enter a hair salon with someone else. I agitate easily, and buzzy whiny high pitched noises make me crazy. I never got social cues growing up, and mimicked others to survive. I had mostly male friends because their social cues were more direct. I hate telephones no matter what the ring. I'm very literal minded. I jiggle my legs when seated, and stand on tiptoes up and down incessantly when standing still. At my age I have learned to cope pretty well, but what a journey.

As she's describing the tests that they gave her They literally sounded like they were made for toddlers. Giving her a bag of toys to play with and then watching her reaction when they make her stop playing with them and take them away! Are you serious? She's 18, she's been masking her whole life and learning how she's supposed to act in social situations! What was your final discovery or where did you take your daughter to finally get the positive diagnosis? If I may ask? I see a rough road ahead of us, and she is hell bent on getting a diagnosis on paper, even though with her diagnoses she has she still going to have accommodations in college and they wouldn't change much with the ASD diagnosis, it's just the fact that we all know and they're telling us that she's not! A while ago, my grandma had a haircut by a “stylist” with an outdated license so the “stylist” barely did anything. It goes without saying my grandma’s blood was boiling despite keeping her cool. She always gets short hair.
I’ve also been told when I was younger that I hated scissors by my face despite absolutely loving getting haircuts (ie. washing and dry).
There really is a lot of lack of rep for women, unfortunately. I only knew later in life (as someone self-diagnosed) because I registered my one guy friend (who is in the spectrum) if I was on the spectrum as a genuine question. I don’t really remember much of when I was younger, but oh boy was it obvious (even with it running in the family from my view).

😂 So I have the autistic characteristics like a cis girl. My main stimming tools are blow pops, painting fingernails, rubbing them, playing with my hair such as twirling or straightening my hair, get quiet when nearing upset or heated cuz I don't want singled out I don't want to be targeted and I usually dissociate from emotions shutting down. I have my mask game down pretty well I just wish I could function as well as I appear I can but it was learned as a survival mechanism. I hated my hair cut because it helps me calm when it's long enough to stim with and it doesn't draw unwanted attention to me. 🏳️‍⚧️ These behaviors felt innate to me and were some of the first signs I didn't relate to assigned sex at birth

I fit almost all of these observations. My daughter fits more of the "boy" presentation in a lot of ways, and I think she has a harder time because of it.

  • @maggierestivo5256
    @maggierestivo5256 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Hmmmm..... I would say that boys are more often *allowed* to be noisy and act out, so more visual meltdowns. Girls are taught from a very young age that anger is not welcomed, so they learn to shut down, as to not draw negative/critical attention to themselves. As far as hair goes? I think that varies among girls. I hated having my hair washed, and combed (having tangles combed out would make me scream). I usually had my hair in pigtails as a young girl (1960s), until my mother got fed up with my screaming and crying and took me to the hairdresser. Pigtails cut off, and was given a "Pixie" haircut. I hated it, because I thought it made me look like a boy, but as the years went by, I learned that short hair was more manageable, and I didn't have to waste so much time on it, and I could keep it off my face and neck (*hate* having any hair touch my face or neck). Now, I have hair as short as the original pixie cut, and, thanks to the pandemic, I learned how to cut it myself. I do think more differences between autistic boys and girls are in part due to social conditioning, not simply how our brains are wired. Great video; lots of food for thought.

For stimming, I do rub my fingers together, rock back and forth or side to side (never in public), rub my nails, and leg bounce. I also like to keep my spaces super clean bc visual clutter or stepping on things stresses me out. I always wear socks, and when my hair is long, I like to keep it up so it doesn't touch me. I've seen many afab autistics just cut it all off tho. I'm struggling not to myself rn😅

I stopped getting my hair cut when I was about 12, 13 or so, because the sensory issues at the hairdressers was becoming intolerable. This was the late 1980's, so not only was it incredibly loud with all of those lights, it Smelled terrible. Then there was the fact that I didn't know that I was gay, and all of these women were touching my hair - a very intimate thing - and I was very uncomfortable with my feelings.
The big thing, though. is that many behaviors are tolerated in boys that are not tolerated in girls. Organization is one of those things that is expected from girls. Boys in general are given a lot more leeway to "be boys" while girls get shit from everyone. Our parents, our teachers and especially other girls. Admittedly, I got a lot of shit from boys too, but being autistic, gay and beautiful in middle school is just asking for trouble. They followed me home in packs to verbally sexually harass me. I couldn't report them because I survived it by not looking at them, so I wasn't sure who they were. And I couldn't imagine a more terrible thing to do to a boy, than to accuse him of sexually harassing me and choose a wrong person. I couldn't win.

_Every 2 weeks, after going to the supermarket, after sensory overload, once I am at home : I just cry silently. It seems weird, but it's how I recover when it's too much.
_I am enough organized, but when everything is clean and well organized, I feel something wrong, it doesn't correspond to me, I need a slightly messy place.
_I only went 2 times to the hairdresser in my life, they didn't do what I wanted. I let my hair grow (actually my hair are damaged and messy because I had frustration and therefore bad sleep 1 year ago) My hair is very fine and no hairstyle has ever held in place. Even the even makeup doesn't last, that's why I stopped to do makeup and hairstyle. To be more simple.
