Picked it up today with a great black Friday dean and now I have a question about setting this up for color accuracy. In Windows 11, should I leave automatic color managemnt on or off? I can't find a clear answer on that. With it disabled everything is very saturated. Adobe Lightroom, too. With your ICC profile applied that's not the case anymore, but then you say I shouldn't use the ICC profile together with the installed sRGB profile. From my understanding Windows automatic color management basically crushes everything down to sRGB. So to me the logical choice would be to keep it turned off with a screen like this. But that leaves the question about the use of an ICC profile and the sRGB profile...
I'd recommend using the ICC profile with the settings I showed in the video. When I'm saying you shouldn't use the ICC profile with the sRGB mode, I'm referring to the sRGB mode in the monitor's menu.
@@techlessYT Thanks for answering! I'm aware that you mean the sRGB mode in them monitor's menu 🙂 What confuses me is the automatic color management in Windows 11, one of the settings you can find in the color management settings. I feel like keeping it off is the right move to make the most of the wide color gamut of the monitor. But then I'm not sure if I should use the ICC profile, the monitor's sRGB mode or both.
I've been using adaptive sync on this monitor for a few weeks, I've never noticed any flickering. I play a variety of games at varying refresh rates, no issues.
Same, I do see some flicker especially in loading screens (very high fluctuation, I assume) but during gameplay it has been very stable. Anyone else notice odd gamma behavior in Creator SRGB mode?? Creator mode is the only mode that seems to clamp to proper srgb color space so you will not have oversaturation but in Creator mode with gamma 2.2 seems to wash out the picture in dark areas. It's very strange behavior and never seen in any other monitor I have used in the past. Blacks are actually lifted less in 2.0 gamma than in 2.2. So if you don't want over statured colors in sdr color space you have to either live with gamma of 2.0 so the unit comes out of black faster or select gamma 2.4 which in some cases can look a bit too dim.
Considering Samsung got in hot water for cheating on their TVs in a similar fashion, makes me wonder if it's on them instead of Alienware. Which isn't great seeing as other manufacturers are going to use the panel too, but fortunately glad that in normal cases it's still good enough.
curious to know, what's the reason of recommending the Gamer mode for any custom adjustments over the "Custom" color mode? It seems like they are identical, however Gamer modes have the Black Stabilizer setting available too (which you wouldn't use for calibration anyways). and Standard is equal to all Gamer + Custom modes when they are set to default. Is this correct or am I missing something?
Yeah it's the black stabilizer. I always recommend the mode that gives the most accurate results. And if there's more than one I recommend whichever offers the most options.
@@techlessYT I see. I had trouble using the Creator sRGB mode. When I calibrated it using Calibrite Display Pro HL it looked good at first and gave me a deltaE of 0.5 until I noticed that certain blacklevels add a weird pattern, like artifacts. it's super strange and I can't explain why this is happening. and using it without a custom ICC profile just doesn't look right to my eyes, reds look kinda orange and washed out.
Hi Techless, great video, i have been use Asus Oled PG27aqdm and its been great. But when use gsync it raise black/gamma level which annoying when play dark games like alan wake 2 using hdr. Turn off gsync or limit fps when gsync on is solution or create custom refresh rate below 240 but this solution i'm not favor it.
Perhaps because DSC. With 1440p and 360 Hz you need Compression with DP 1.4a. This can cause some problems with VRR. Alienware said they will solve this problem with a firmware where you can enable/diable DSC. In this case you cant go 360 Hz.

First of all best review 👍and i 100% agree adaptive sync makes no sens on this monitor with minimum 200 frames.. I upgraded from a Dell S2721DGF 165Hz and couldn't play without turning adaptive sync on.. I play PUBG and my experiance is much much better, i never thought it would be that much better. I also tryed fluid motion frames and it works great to. This i a better upgrade then my upgrade from a 6700XT to my 7800XT.
Almost bought this - it's actually cheaper than other premium alternatives in my region, for whatever reason. Glad I waited for your review though! Idk, just seems like we're still on the "caveat era" of OLED monitors. Brightness snake oil, distracting reflections, color fringing... Looks amazing, but I'm sticking with my S2721DGF for now. Great video!
Yeah, I have noticed pixel shift happening quite often and it doesn't shock me to hear that it moves every 3 minutes, that's pretty aggressive. But also, one thing I don't like about this monitor is that the brightness doesn't dim during inactivity like on the LG version.
From what I’ve been researching, nvidia and amd products will work just as good on opposite platforms. I have this monitor and will be using a nvidia rog strix 4090 with the freesync premium pro that this monitor has.
people with OLED monitors in the chat, have you really noticed the flickering issue mentioned in the video? is it noticeable/annoying? and would you take an IPS over an OLED cus of that issue?
I've got the LG that is mentioned in the video. Yes you can see it very obvious if the framerate and therefore the refresh rate changes drastically. But this doesn't happen to often. I would never go back to an IPS mostly because of the motion clarity, the bright highlights and the black level.
i got question so the iccu profile i donwload i turn it off when i have hdr on and only on when using sdr?? or should i calibrate my own hdr profile for when i use hdr
got an answer to that question yet? Got mine today and ask myself the same. When HDR is on, on the monitor, I cant really change a thing, which is probably right.
I understand this guy gets to test the best of the best and is trying to inform people of pros and cons but damn, just feels like a lot of complaining anout minor things, most people just want to turn it on and enjoy gaming
I have 0 complaints about mine. yea it may be 200 something nit brightness but I dont notice it at all. as regular competitive gamer I just like that the colors look great, 360hz, insanely good motion clarity, true blacks, 1440p, etc. it is an s+ monitor for 99% of people who will buy this.
@techlessYT What about MSI 271QPX? I want an OLED monitor, but dont know if I should until you review it, buy the AW, wait another year for Gen3 QD-OLED... One one hand, AW its out now and its 100€ cheaper, but i wonder if MSI can solver the brightness and green tint issues you mention. Thanks!

Although it is widely known that Samsung's warranty for burn-in issues is not very consumer-friendly, making an extended warranty meaningless to consumers, haha!
I'm aware that you mean the sRGB mode in them monitor's menu 🙂
What confuses me is the automatic color management in Windows 11, one of the settings you can find in the color management settings. I feel like keeping it off is the right move to make the most of the wide color gamut of the monitor. But then I'm not sure if I should use the ICC profile, the monitor's sRGB mode or both.
Nice find with the brightness cheating, hope you will test more monitors for the same behaviour
Hello nice video! Maybe do an update on the qd oled and woled video? The last one had caps of under 200hz both monitors.
Has this been fixed or is it still an issue?
This makes me think of dieselgate, same type if shady tinkering.
I guess the reduced brightness explains why Dell are the only ones to offer a 3-year warrenty on their products.
I've been using adaptive sync on this monitor for a few weeks, I've never noticed any flickering. I play a variety of games at varying refresh rates, no issues.
Same, I do see some flicker especially in loading screens (very high fluctuation, I assume) but during gameplay it has been very stable.
I’m coming from a Dell S3422DWG with a VA panel, which was way worse until I capped the lower VRR bounds to ~70Hz.
I’m playing exclusively in the VESA HDR 400 True black mode with auto HDR and G-Sync.
sorry for my ignorance, is adaptive sync natively enabled on this monitor? im using a nvdia card and on the OSD there is no way to enable freesync or adaptive sync or am i missing something? @@leoklaus

Same issue here it looks like the KTC m27t20 out of the box before firmware upgrading
Considering Samsung got in hot water for cheating on their TVs in a similar fashion, makes me wonder if it's on them instead of Alienware. Which isn't great seeing as other manufacturers are going to use the panel too, but fortunately glad that in normal cases it's still good enough.
good enough for 900$
curious to know, what's the reason of recommending the Gamer mode for any custom adjustments over the "Custom" color mode?
I had to disable gsync when play alan wake 2 to black/gamma level not raise making strange crush black. Is it known issue with oled and VRR ? Or there is solution ?
Have you tried using the 'Shadow Boost' feature? This is meant to improve visibility in dark scenes by altering the gamma curvature
@@Xano-pn4sd thanks for reply, But what i mean is when gsync enable making shade grey up like increase gamma making black and gray banding when gsync enable.if use shadow boost just makinh brighter while i want darker as intended by the game. After research further this issue common cause by vrr flickering, it can raise gamma/grey shades in dark scene.
In this case you cant go 360 Hz.
i like those hifiman's and that dac/amp - RME makes great gear!
Id say it was pretty much designed to pass LTT tests, which are they are known to say they dont have HDR test equipment yet
Hey i just bought this monitor and although its great i cant seem to figure out how to turn the monitor off.Could you please explain how to shut the monitor off?
saving for an entire upgrade by early next year, I'll switch up to this monitor alongside a 4070 ti & 32gb ddr5
Really interesting stuff. Keep at it, hopeful that we can see the MSI and ASUS versions in comparison and this summer the LG and ASUS displays.
I can buy the LG 240hz on sale for a good amount off…say 30% off what I can get the Dell for. Would you recommend just getting the LG or is it worth to swing for the Dell?
First of all best review 👍and i 100% agree adaptive sync makes no sens on this monitor with minimum 200 frames.. I upgraded from a Dell S2721DGF 165Hz and couldn't play without turning adaptive sync on.. I play PUBG and my experiance is much much better, i never thought it would be that much better. I also tryed fluid motion frames and it works great to. This i a better upgrade then my upgrade from a 6700XT to my 7800XT.
are these recommended settings still ok for fps games?
I returned this monitor because of the vrr flickering and went back to lcd. Turning off gsync isn't an acceptable solution imo
The reflections are by choice. Semi-gloss monitors > smeared Vaseline matte coatings. The color fringing and brightness levels are issues, though.
putting a matte coating on an OLED is pure criminal.
wait for msis oleds to come out
Yeah, I have noticed pixel shift happening quite often and it doesn't shock me to hear that it moves every 3 minutes, that's pretty aggressive. But also, one thing I don't like about this monitor is that the brightness doesn't dim during inactivity like on the LG version.
I just lower the contrast to 0 when I am away from my PC
does this monitor work just as well with an nvidia grtaphics card. i always assume you need a g-sync monitor with nvidia carrds
From what I’ve been researching, nvidia and amd products will work just as good on opposite platforms. I have this monitor and will be using a nvidia rog strix 4090 with the freesync premium pro that this monitor has.
@techless i wanted to buy this monitor for single player games, but the flikering scares me, i have tried the lg woled, but colors are washed out 😔
people with OLED monitors in the chat, have you really noticed the flickering issue mentioned in the video? is it noticeable/annoying? and would you take an IPS over an OLED cus of that issue?
I've got the LG that is mentioned in the video. Yes you can see it very obvious if the framerate and therefore the refresh rate changes drastically. But this doesn't happen to often. I would never go back to an IPS mostly because of the motion clarity, the bright highlights and the black level.
I am looking for this one or neo g8 from samsung. Unfortunately alienware is not yet in stoc here. What do you think?
That test pattern detection thing is really shady. I hope this is really just bad firmware and not the desired behaviour.
i got question so the iccu profile i donwload i turn it off when i have hdr on and only on when using sdr?? or should i calibrate my own hdr profile for when i use hdr
got an answer to that question yet?
Well it wouldn’t be a review if the expert didn’t point out the pros and cons if that bothers you the problem is with you, you are in the wrong video
@techlessYT What about MSI 271QPX?
I want an OLED monitor, but dont know if I should until you review it, buy the AW, wait another year for Gen3 QD-OLED...

And does it have the issue with dirty gray shades? woleds have them, and I can not use such a monitor in win dark mode. But oled loosing out to a lcd in inputlag is also a no go.
Motion clarity on OLED is next level compared to LCD. Input lag is nothing vs pixel response time and this is where LCD is slow as hell.
@@Dr.WhetFarts compared the 390hz ips vs the 240hz oled. Motion clarity was what I would say the same. The only thing that felt better was the lower input lag.
@@Dr.WhetFarts >Input lag is nothing compared to pixel response time.
I wanted to say that it's nonsense, but... Yeah, well, you know, it's just, like, your opinion, man. I certainly do not feel that way.
@@PillokunI made the switch from the Acer 390hz and don’t regret it. Can’t stand LCD. I don’t care if I lose out on .5ms of input lag 🤣 I’ll take better motion at higher peak brightness and perfect blacks all day long. (390hz backlight strobing is still impressive ngl, obv doesn’t come close to Zowie’s TN).
Coming from a 27GR95QE-B to this initially I was impressed but the eye strain is real.
Not sure if it’s all QD panels as this one was my first but I had zero eye strain on my LG.
Secondly the packaging still dog shit, mine had the same micro-scratches that the originals came with so I’ll be refunding it.. a damn shame.
Do you know why i can't use custom resolutions @ 360hz? I wanted to set one particular game (doesn't support UI scaling) to 720p 360hz, but I can't seem to add it, even with CRU. :/
Edit: Don't know exactly how I fixed this, but it was definitely either:
- Reinstalling drivers
- Selecting GPU scaling
Thanks, going to send mine back if it arrives... Text fringing was something i could live with, but what are thos ugly black lines all over the place? What are these black bars on the edges that moves every 3 minutes? Every 4 hours you need to make a burnin refresh, and only 200lumen...
No sir, to much hassle, im going back to IPS.
Seems these qd-oled monitors have mid grey shenanigans in the hdr peak 1000 mode making them them appear darker in many cases than their own true black 400 mode 😮
Could you evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the S27DG60、FO27Q3 and AW2725DF? It has been confirmed that the A/D boards of the S27DG60 and the AW2725DF are from different manufacturers. Although it is widely known that Samsung's warranty for burn-in issues is not very consumer-friendly, making an extended warranty meaningless to consumers, haha!
I'm also confused about the details of FO27Q3's HDMI 2.1 and DP1.4... whether it's superior to SS's 10G/4L, and whether the PS5's maximum 4K mapping can achieve 120Hz? What about VRR status? Can DSC be turned off manually? Also, what IC is used on the A/D motherboard?
Additionally, I suggest that your future LCD monitor reviews include an introduction to the A/D board for each model.
