Having seen a younger Anakin Skywalker force ghost, though, definitely warrants watching Ep. 1 to 3 now in order to get a grasp of his story arc and to be able to understand the tidbits of information the movies are sprinkled with.

Yeah, they definitely changed that relationship AFTER the first movie was filmed. However they DO heavily allude to it in Empire several times. "There is another" followed by Leia being the one able to hear Luke in her head. Also, the clear character turn to Leia being attracted to Han doesn't happen until Empire, and that was completely because it's when they decided about the relationship between Luke and Leia. There's little to no written sexual tension between Han and Leia in the first movie, and that's because Luke WAS the intended romance there.

"Father, I won't leave you". When Luke says that to Vader when he dies it always makes me so sad.(also Mark Hamill is great in these films and does not get enough credit) Luke just got his father, his real father, knows he's going to die and is so desperate to help him. His other line, "No, I won't leave you, you're coming with me" also gets me too; like he is trying to "will" Vader to live and also trying to convince himself he can save his life though he really knows his dad is going to die. American films are super popular here and often win British Academy of Film awards, but British Films and Directors also regularly win American Oscars there too. Just last year 1917 the British War film was nominated for 17 Oscars at the American Oscars; the British director Sam Mendes (also a director of a couple of James bond films) made the American films Road to Perdition and American Beauty. These films won awards in both America and the UK and our countries have a long history of collaboration in Movies; Charlie Chaplin was English, So is Stanley Kubrick, Christopher Nolan, Alfred Hitchcock, Ridley Scott, etc. Interestingly lots of scenes from the original Star wars trilogy were filmed here at Pinewood Studios as it was cheaper for Lucas and gave him easy access to Alec Guinness (Obi-wan) and Peter Cushing (Tarkin) Anthony Daniels (C3PO), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), David Prowse (The guy in the Vador suit), and Ian McDiarmid (Palpatine) the British actors who lived in the UK. • @tofu_golem

Their kiss is a major plot hole.
If Lucas knew that they were going to be siblings, there's no way that kiss scene would have happened, nor would there have been any sexual tension between Luke and Leia. Yes, it's possible to explain that away by saying they didn't know, but Lucas was clearly going for something innocent in these movies, and would never have included that if he planned for them to be siblings all along.
It's a plot hole, and so what?
That plot hole is honestly why I'm generally more tolerant of plot holes in Star Wars compared to other franchises. For Star Trek or Ghost in the Shell, I need to have a lack of plot holes, and I also need certain things in the subtext, themes, metaphors, etc. For Star Wars, all I really want or need is good action sequences, good pacing, and good character moments.

That was the best reaction to Lando's escape! He's kind of an unsung hero, he doesn't get a lot of attention from fans. Lucas really, really wanted you to think he was gonna die.
Re: Luke and Leia's mom, she's developed more in depth in the prequels, but basically the twins were split up and hidden so that Vader and the Emperor would not sense them (and they could not be traced to one another). Luke went to live with his uncle Owen and aunt Beru on Tatooine. Leia was adopted by the senator of Alderaan, Bail Organa and his wife Queen Breha of Alderaan, making Leia a princess. Leia also succeeded her father as the senator of Alderaan. That's really about all we knew about it back in 1983.
All we knew about Vader was that something bad went down between him and Obi-Wan and that during a fight, Vader fell into a volcano or nuclear reactor or something. And we knew that the story books and trading cards referred to Vader as a Dark Lord of the Sith.
The prequels are about the fall of Anakin Skywalker but they're also about a democracy turning into a dictatorship. They take place before the Empire and the conflict is a bit more obscure at first. Just know that what you'll be seeing is the Republic that existed before the Empire. It was a representative form of government similar to our own but instead of representing states, the senators represented their home worlds and even entire star systems (though not every planet was part of the Republic). The seat of the Senate was the capital planet Coruscant located in the very center of the galaxy. By the time of Ep.1, however, the government has become corrupt and ineffective and greedy corporations have so much power and wealth that they can buy their own senate seats. (Imagine if Chase Bank or Exxon had their own senators in U.S. congress.) The Trade Federation is one such corporation that will come into play in the next film. They control most of the major trade routes in the galaxy. They also have a private army of battle droids despite it being illegal, thanks to their corruption of the senate.
A lot of people hated this political aspect of the prequels, but I found it incredibly fascinating because Lucas bases a lot of things on real life events, such as the fall of Rome, the rise of Hitler, etc. It was also something that was teased in the novelization of A New Hope, that the Emperor had manipulated and taken advantage of the commerce guilds and corrupt senators to cause his rise to power.
Also know that there is no military in the Republic because there's been no war in a thousand years. The Jedi protect the peace in the galaxy. They serve the Republic but have their own traditions and exist apart from it. A thousand years earlier they had vanquished their ancient enemies, the Sith, believed to be extinct, who used the dark side of the Force for power and dominance.
These aren't really spoilers, it's just general set-up that isn't made as clear as it should be in the film. One of the flaws of Ep.1 is that while eventually these things are made clear, it can be very confusing at first and people spend more time trying to understand what the relationships between these entities are that it pulls them out of the movie. I like The Phantom Menace, but I feel it's the most flawed of the prequels. They definitely get better from there.

And thus screwed up the continuity already established in Star Wars. Why wasn't Kenobi younger or Yoda if Anakin was? I wish you could've seen these before the "Special Editions". The added CGI cheapens some scenes. The Empire Strikes Back is my favorite! It's actually playing in my local theater this Friday! Going to treat my mom and my eldest to it!

All we ever really wanted was the theatrical versions remastered and released on DVD. And that's the one thing that Lucasfilm or Disney has never given us.

I think most of the changes were either for the better or practically unnoticeable. There’s only one that actually bothers me, and that’s Vader’s “No…NO” before killing Palpatine

  • @epa316
    @epa316 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

3:44 I think that's Vader's best entrance... can you imagine being an Imperial officer and seeing THAT coming at you? Yes, it's very messed up that Luke and Leia smooched, several times.. Jerry Springer in space!

"Who's that guy?"... exactly! You've just watched 3 movies and if you have to ask right at one of the final scenes of the trilogy something isn't really right and a bad decision was made. I cant believe they changed that part 🤦‍♂️

@@firellama4812 nah when you are making a film (or making changes to a film) it needs to work for a first time viewer, especially if that moment is one of the emotional pay offs to the whole trilogy

@@firellama4812 While it may be true that if a person watched the movies in sequential order that, for that audience, seeing Young Anakin is a decent payoff.... it still doesn't work in the context of ROTJ. Luke doesn't know and has never met the robed jedi who is several years younger than him. Seeing Sebastian Shaw not only makes sense to people who haven't watched the sequels, it also makes sense to Luke. Especially since he just saw the same (albeit scarred) face less than 24 hours ago.
