I still love this Carrie Fisher quote regarding parents getting outraged about the gold bikini. Parent: 'What am I going to tell my kid about why she’s in that outfit?' Carrie: Tell them that a giant slug captured me and forced me to wear that stupid outfit, and then I killed him because I didn’t like it'.

It's the same with stuff like villains smoking or doing other things. Explain to your kid it's bad and that's why the bad guy is doing it.

If so, I LOVE IT!!
"He looks like a prisoner..." The fact that even Alex can tell Vader/Anakin is a prisoner is telling to how tragic his backstory is. Easily the most tragic character in entertainment history.
Anakin never went a day in his life without calling someone "master"

44:24 To me this moment is the greatest moment in filmmaking the complete journey of a hero. “I have to save you.” “You already have.” It will forever get to me.
Agree. No matter how many times I see this, it makes my eyes a bit wet.
Probably the most important moment in all of Star Wars
In that scene, something very subtle was done (I hope it was intentional). Luke's tunic, up until this point, was always completely black, and we didn't know if he was going to turn to the dark side. The question of whether he would turn or not was the entire build-up of this movie, including the film's previews which showed Luke and Vader in the elevator together. By the time Luke is with a dying Vader in the hanger, the tunic is now open, revealing the white underside. If it wasn't intentional, it certainly sent the subliminal message that Luke would not turn.
@@chaddashnaw2075 I’m sure it’s one of many!

“He looks like a prisoner, dude.” - Alex
The most _right_ thing ANY one has ever said in that moment. Fear. Hate. They keep us all prisoners.
great thought! so true!
Right? This was so on point, even without having seen the prequels. But especially when you know the suit was designed to keep him in pain.
Preach man 👏
And there is part of the tragedy of Darth Vader, throughout his entire life, he was never not a slave and a prisoner.
He was a slave his whole life until that moment. Anakin was the Jedi that returned to restore balance to The Force, and his son must now maintain that balance.
When Leia says "I have always known" everyone reacts like when she first saw him she was like "oh cool, my brother."
But I have always thought it was more like, she met him and felt a familiarity, she knew she had some kind of connection to him. But I dont think she knew he was her brother. She just knew she felt a connection with him early on.
the reason everyone reacts that way is because the way she says it... there is better phrasing that could have been used there, or could have put more dialog to clarify, without clarification for what she meant everyone remembers the scene they kissed and that is where their mind goes with that line whether meant that way or not.
All you need to do is to watch Empire Strikes Back to figure that one out. It practically spells it out for you.
Yes! That is what I told Alex in my comment.
Pretty sure she's referring to always knowing about having the force
Leia realized when Luke talked to her in cloud city
Alex pointing out that Anakin looks like a prisoner in the suit is very insightful for someone new to the story & lore.
I’m so glad he made that realization. It’s going to make his reaction to Revenge of the Sith so fucking good
pretty sure he saw those movies already lmao
@azbycx737 he did. If he'd seen the prequels, he would have known Luke and Leia were related.
He's been right on point about quite a few things and kind of half right of lots of things during these OT reactions.
Very impressive for a first watch while talking to an audience.
@@Dan_Mk2I think he said that he went to see Phantom Menace in the cinema when he was a kid and fell asleep. He hasn't watched any Star Wars from then until now.
Jabba was a life-sized puppet, which was operated by three puppeteers inside the model (the operator of the tail also played an Ewok) and a fourth operating the eyes and facial expressions by remote control. The material used breaks down over time, so supposedly the only thing left now is the eyes.
The confusion in regards to 'Jabba' stems from his 'reaction video' to the episode IV Special Edition version, where they inserted that piece of crap, 'CGI Jabba', who interacted with Han Solo 🤢🤮
the little guy in the tail got his head stepped on by Carrie Fisher when she moved behind Jabba to strangle him
Fraternal twins that were raised apart meeting and mistaking familial vibes with romance has actually happened a few times.
And has sometimes been caught by them too late. Same with other family, though I think that's a little more common, with how often some families rarely meet their extended families.
I think I remember reading somewhere that it’s common enough to be a studied phenomenon
@@theonegoldengryphon It's called the Westermarck Effect. Also known as Reverse Sexual Imprinting. First studied in traditional Israeli kibbutzs, where they raise kids in communal creches. If a subject is raised separately from opposite-sex siblings, then meet them years later, the subject will find him or herself irrationally attracted in a romantic/sexual way to that sibling. That's just the general idea, there are much more subtleties to it.
I believe it’s cause due to the genes and the brain going: “Oh I like those genes! These would work great together!” Or something like that.
It even has a name: Genetic Sexual Attraction.
In typical families this is canceled out by the "Westermark Effect" where if you spend a lot of time around someone from around ages 1-8ish you develop a psychological block that keeps you from seeing them as a potential mate.
To clear it up a little, when Leia said she 'always knew', it's that she felt a connection to Luke. Of course, neither knew they were siblings at the time, so they mistook it for romantic attraction. It doesn't erase the weird, but it eases it a little.
To be honest, I don't think that kiss was necessarily even mistaken romantic attraction. I always saw it as her way of sticking a finger in Han's eye and deflating his ego a bit.
@@mattw.6726that’s exactly how I’ve always seen it. Her kissing Luke was only to make Han jealous and dig at him.

Vader turning against the Emperor and saving Luke is one of the greatest movie moments in history. In the original he stays silent and doesn’t speak when protects Luke. I’ve gotten used to this version but the original is more impactful and heartfelt.

It's always funny to me watching someone utterly ignorant of Star Wars see all these characters and just give them passing thoughts without realizing that because of the insanity of the fanbase, many of the characters in every major scene have names, backstories and all that.
Luke noticed Vader's mechanical hand. Not because the dark side makes you mechanical, but because he went through a similar trauma and can now relate with how he fell down the path of the dark side. He decides there that he doesn't want to make the same mistake and puts his light saber down.
Still, I can totally see the connection he made. Dark side is inhumane, Vader gave in to it and he's more a machine then man, Luke got tempted for a moment and he only got a mechanic hand, then Vader redeemed himself and now hus mask is removed and we can see his face, which gives him his humanity back in out eyes, like he is no more just a faceless machine.
That's what Yoda and the Force were trying to show him in the cave on Degobah.
No @@matthewandrews3883 the cave on Dagoba doesn't show you what some little green goblin wants you to see; it shows you what you fear most. For Luke that was Vader and becoming like Vader ( as in falling to the dark side ).
@@timon6759 yeah. He feared turning into Vader. That's why when he was looking at his mechanical hand, after chopping off Vaders, he realized what he was becoming and that's why he threw down his lightsaber.
@matthewandrews3883 Vader's mechanical hand reminded him of his greatest fear, fallibg to the dark side.
I liked your analysis of a little bit of darkness in him via the mechanical portion of him. If you notice Luke Skywalker is in black the whole movie signifying his battle between the light and the dark side at the end of the movie his jacket is open revealing that there was white inside all along
The line “It is too late for me son” just makes me feel so bad for vader. Something inside definitely wants to side with his son but after all the horrible things he’s done he doesn’t see it as an option
44:10 “He looks like a prisoner dude.”
Indeed he was, a prisoner in a prison of his own making, of his hatred. Hatred for those who lied to him, hatred for those that took everything from him, and most of all hatred of himself, for failing so utterly to stop any of it.
Awesome observation dude!

Dude. You are a joy. I saw the original (Episode IV) in the theater when I as 3 years old and my parents had a bootleg VHS copy early on, so this is in my DNA. Hearing the opening fanfare gives me the feels, and I get emotional every time. I can't wait for you to check out the other movies and their varying quality when compared to the Original Trilogy. They should absolutely be viewed in release order (except maybe Rogue One and Solo, they can be watched before going to the prequals and sequels).
THAT MONTAGE WAS GOLD. Big respect to the editor!
Jabba is portrayed by a one-ton puppet that took three months and half a million dollars to construct. While filming the movie, the puppet had its own makeup artist. The puppet required three puppeteers to operate, making it one of the largest ever used in a motion picture.
It's an incredible feat of Muppet engineering. I specify Muppet because it's the same crew as the Jim Henson creature shop, but I believe they went uncredited?
I'm 50, and saw all three of these originals in the theater. Over the years I've seen these movies well over a hundred times.
I actually got a little emotional watching your first-time experiences with these. It was like re-living certain moments thru you.
Keep it up, man! Can't wait for EP 1-3 next!
I hope I'll be like you when i'm that old. I hope I never lose my love for Star Wars. It's such an amazing franchise, I hope it will be as good as it was back then some day.
it really was like experiencing it again, got chills all over again at the endings, even though I've seen them all hundreds of times (gen x here as well). Such a fun journey!
So you watched A New Hope in theatres when you were 4 years old?
My favorite comment you made is when Luke finally took off Vader's mask and you said: "He looks like a prisoner in there" and I'll never look at that scene the same again. You're so right!!! I've seen these movies way too many times to admit or remember for that matter and a fresh set of eyes is always great way to keep it going. Thanks you sir!
Jabba was a costume/puppet. People controlled his arms and tongue and stuff. There was even a guy inside his tail. Also, Rancors are hella ugly, but they are kinda like dogs. They are really loyal and form deep bonds with their owners. That executioner was that Rancor's handler and close friend.
Yeah Jabba had 3 puppeteers inside him if I remember correctly
Yea, the only thing of Jabba that remains are his eyes..
Have you seen the little fan-made movie short here in TH-cam called Birth of A Monster?
It's the origin story of Malikili (the Rancor keeper) and how he acquired the beast, and even reveals how he came into being among Jabba's crew (and an uglier more grotesque Bib Fortuna you will not see).
I highly recommend it. It's really well done.
Fun Fact: most of Endor was shot on location in the Cali Redwood Forest, and Chewie had to wear a safety vest & wasnt alowed to be alone between takes so a hunter didn't mistake him for a bigfoot.

Oh shit. Yo I can totally see that happening too. Good job on the person who thought of that.
😂 Wow. Never knew that, that's hilarious and sad at the same time.
There would be some real ignorant hillbillies out there that had not seen a Star Wars movie in 1982. And they would have been dopey enough to think that bigfoot is real.
Leia didn’t know Luke was her brother but felt a closeness and when he said it, then it all made sense. Hence she said she always knew it. Not literally, but emotionally. Leia is awesome in every way.
Very true... plus when she kiss her brother she would have had a McFly moment and though... "hmmm something is not right here".
EDIT: She would also be force sensitive and would have subconsciously picked up that vibe.
But they can’t handwave how she knew her real mother…
@@Clownboy15 in RotS, when she's born, her eyes are open and she sees Padme, whereas when Luke came out, his eyes were closed. So the first thing Leia saw was her mother, and that image of her essentially burned itself into her memory. It was a small detail, and easy to miss, but nothing like that is ever an accident. Lucas knew what he was doing with that shot of the babies.
@@katiemcleod that is way too much of a stretch.
@@katiemcleodMaybe, but Lucas, as much of a great filmmaker and storyteller as he is, isn’t Vince Gilligan. Star Wars isn’t Breaking Bad. What I mean is that not everything in Star Wars is intentional like it is in Breaking Bad. For example, episode 6 spends too much time on the Ewoks, and The Phantom Menace has a bunch of filler crap- and I say that even though I enjoy that movie. Breaking Bad doesn’t waste a second. Even it’s worst-rated episode, a bottle episode where Walt and Jesse kill a fly has an immense amount of character building and important dialogue. That’s the difference between a genius a man who has a great story.

I love the release order. You get to know Vader at his worst and then you see how he became that way. Has great impact.
Very interesting when you said Vader looked like a prisoner. Thats in fact what he was. His black suit, while provided a menacing presence and an ominous silhouette. It also was a life support system keeping him alive. However, when Darth Sidious (Emperor) designed his life sustaining suit, he made sure to include some quirks; it was extremely susceptible to force lightning. As you saw the little he sustained at the end was enough to kill him. Thats why he couldnt just grow a sack and stand up to his master. Awesome and entertaining videos!!!
"I've got to save you.'
"You already have."
Gets me every freaking time.
And it was echoed in another fabulous trilogy in Return of the King, though the father figure was not evil, but ashamed of past weakness.
I’ll stop there because people are weird about spoilers. IYKYK
Fun Fact -- the first little Ewok that finds Leia was played by Warwick Davis in his first movie role. He was just 11 years old when he was cast. He said his whole approach was to mimic the way the family dog responded to his humans.
The editor has been making me laugh all the way through these reactions. And made this moment even better because we'd all been waiting for it. Bravo.
You should watch the original cut sometime. The scenes I'd recommend rewatching are the Vader saving Luke part (he doesn't yell a cringey "nooooooo"), it's silent but more powerful emotionally, and the ending scene has different music, no dance party from other worlds, and the ghost of Anakin isn't Hayden Christiansen, it's the actor who played Vader (Prowse I think?).
Also, there was a reimagining of the Obi-Wan vs. Vader fight from the first movie called SC 38, and it makes the fight look more modern while keeping the feel of the original movie intact, very fun to watch, and perfectly done with how it fits into the story.
I will never cease to be amazed at how many people think Leia's line about how she's always known she was Luke's twin is literal. She just meant she always felt a strong non-romantic connection to him and hearing him say they're siblings made it all fall into place and explained what she's always felt or, as she put it, known. I mean, except for that one time in Empire where she kissed him to make Han jealous, all the kisses she gave Luke were kind of friend-zony and sisterly.
They lived their whole lives on other planets. Never suspected they had siblings so the flirting/kiss etc was not strange.
Ikr, calm down Alex they didn't have sex or anything. Just a kiss
How do you know what she meant? Your making up something that was never said or expressed in the movies to explain it.
The whole problem is Liea wasn't supposed to be his twin sister. That didn't come about until the filming of Jedi.

4, 5, and 6 should always be first, for first timers.
No matter the argument, the fact remains that 4 - 6 are THE STORY. 1 - 3, 7 - 9, and everything else between, all revolve around 4 - 6.
Once you have experienced it in the order they came out, then alternative viewing order can be done many ways.
One popular and often overlooked order is;
4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 6.
Movies in a series have to be watched in the order in which they were made. Even if a later movie takes place before one made earlier, it was made in a universe in which the older movies already existed. Even if the creators do not do it on purpose, there will always be references, allusions, etc. to the earlier work that undermine the impact of the later movies if watched out of order.
I mean, release order is fine but you're wrong.
@@xDarthSTYXx That's just what a sith would say. Uncultured swine, all of them.
@@xDarthSTYXx No. he's not wrong.
If you watched 1-3 before 4-6 you'd already know that Vader is Luke's father and that Luke and Leia are siblings. 🙄
The flashback order, I love watching these movies in that order! (Well, except the part where I have to watch Episodes 1 and 2… I hate these films)
The funny thing is, I watch Star Wars and kinda see the Joker in the making. You know what I mean? The guy was born for the role, he literally has "ARKHAM" in his name
The moment that chokes me up every time is when Luke removes Vader's mask, and we see that underneath all that armor, he's just a sad old man. I am so happy that you saw it that way as well. He WAS a prisoner. A prisoner to his own fear and insecurities, and a slave to Emperor Palpatine's manipulations.
Yeah, the emperor really stole Anakin's life away from him.
And, let's all be clear, a massive war criminal with millions if not trillions of deaths on his hands. There was never going to be any true redemption for him, if he had survived, it would have been to stand trial and die in prison.
@@SiLvErWaRe000 not just the emperor, dont forget Jedis forbidded him to barely think bout the most imoportant person on his life

@@VergilTheMotivatedKatanaMan That's prequel stuff too, not canon at the time of this film.
Alex: when Leia said she's always know, she meant spiritually or internal. Like once she heard the words out loud she knew it's Truth like a deep sense she was aware of but not really tuned into consciously.
17:16 The thing with the release order being "out of order" is that it's actually a brilliant way to let the audience experience what was effectively the aftermath of the rise of the Empire, and all the erasure or rewriting of history and records that presumably went along with that event. By starting the audience at movie IV, we go in ignorant of what has transpired previously, and-like Luke-we have to rely on believing what we're told. That's why the Vader=father and Leia=sister twists work so well, because we're in the dark just as much as Luke is. If the movies were aired in chronological order, chances are that those surprises would not have been surprises at all.
There is another reactor who has done all Star Wars content in chronological order, including Clone Wars, Rebels, etc. So the big reveal for her was Anakin becoming Darth Vader. She had NO idea it was coming, and was shocked. It was interesting to watch her reactions and the different set of surprises that presented themselves.
@@RobbHollen Huh. That sounds interesting. Mind dropping a name?
@@RobbHollen I saw another reactor watch it in order as well, and he was just as surprised when Anakin turned. I still love release order, but it was great to experience a different twist that us OG fans all knew was coming.
I showed my daughter the series 1-3, Rogue One, then 4 onwards. It really makes the whole saga about Anakin, as I feel it should be. The twist of Vader being the Father is replaced by the turning of Anakin and the death of Padme/ birth of the twins.
We watched Rogue One and Ep 4 in the same sitting, so the Vader rampage at the end segues straight into them boarding and speaking with Leia as Ep 4 begins 👍🏼
I still like seeing 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 6. You end with 5 being a cliffhanger, see Anakin's fall, then fully appreciate his redemption.
It’s pretty obvious that Alex is gonna get through the prequels soon but I hope he considers watching The Clone Wars series too!
I think Luke looking at his hand made him realize how similar they are and how anger can easily overcome you.
I thought it was about the futility of hurting each other and how Vader, already being almost completely mechanised, didn't have much Luke could even take from him at this point. That there was just no point in it.
all equally good takes. I had always seen that as a throwback to the scene from Empire where Luke sees himself in Darth Vader's mask, back on Dagobah. The hands both being mechanical reminds Luke that his anger will only turn him into the thing he hates the most. "What's in there?" ... "Only what you take with you" ... and that applies to life just as much as the test in the cave. @@oq1106
I always thought Luke was remembering the force vision of him becoming Vader and the same hand missing triggered him
@@zacheryhalbert Very much this! The force vision on Dagobah showed Luke that his aggression in the cave was a path to the dark side and why Yoda said, "failure in the cave". Luke looking at Vader's missing mechanical hand and then at his own mechanical hand emphasized that the aggression he had just used again was leading him to become like his father, like Vader.
The point to not miss especially, is the fact that Vader's hand already had wiring. His hand had already been rreplaced. Originally, this I know from books I read as a teen and pre-teen, the Emperor was the one to cut off Vader's right hand after the first Death Star had been destroyed. But obviously, Episode III undid that.

It's amazing how nobody ever seems to catch that Leia only kissed Luke out of spite to make hun jealous and yes Luke was attracted to her when they first met but he had no clue that they were brother and sister
Nobody misses it. Makes for bad reaction vids, though.
Thank you! Literally came here to say the same thing! Leah only ever treated Luke like he was a brother from the start. That kiss was entirely just to make Han jealous and to stick it to him for his ego. And it wasn't even much of a kiss at that more chaste than anything else. Just like with back to the Future, people want to put something there that isn't. I know I'll get some arguments about the back to the Future issue but I'm ready to argue them if somebody wants to come at me.
She does kiss him again in the Falcon at the end of empire. Could just be a pity kiss tho😂 cuz he short a hand and low key unconscious.
That and people don't realize that George Lucas was making shit up as he went. In Ep 4, Anakin and Vader were two completely different people. It wasn't until halfway through filming Ep 5 that he decided to make them the same person and Luke's father. Same thing with Ep 6 and having Luke and Leia be siblings.
There was another kiss between Luke and Leia in ESB that was filmed but left on the cutting room floor. Leia wasn't Luke's sister when ANH and ESB were being made. She didn't get retconned into being his sister until the later drafts of ROTJ.
Couple notes so far: Luke's home planet is pronounced Tat-too-een and it has 2 suns, not moons. That is why is is a desert planet and they have to farm for moisture. Seriously, LOVE your channel(s) and reactions Alex. Ronnie is right, you are a cool guy. AND - I, legit, have never laughed so hard than when you found out Leia was Luke's sister. I swear, I am literally crying here. as funny as your jump scares ....
Actually it was originally covered in oceans and rainforests. Its a desert because a species called the Rakata used a dark-side powered superweapon on the planet essentially turning it to glass. That was like, in 25,000 years before New Hope so over the millennia the glass eroded into the desert we see now.
If you love his jump-scares, you need to watch his reaction to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. When one of the spiders attacks Ron in the car, you can actually see the moment Alex’s soul leaves his body 😂
@@Jim_The_FishBhaha! now i'm gonna have to go watch that. His jump-scares to IT had me crying. LOL
@@friendlyNemesis I need someone to make a supercut of all his jumpscares lol
@@Jim_The_Fish right??!!! That would be comedy gold. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yoda's species is very mysterious. Other than their long lifespan and seemingly powerful connection to the Force, nothing is known about them.
Vader's suit was a life support system specifically designed by the Emperor to be highly vulnerable to electricity, as well as super uncomfortable, as a way to keep Vader in check and on a tight leash.
Stop spreading that misinformation around.
His suit was not designed to cause him pain, that is ONLY in Legends, which is not canon.
Also, no crap his suit is weak to electricity, it's made up of technology.
Just to clarify, Tatooine is in a binary star system, so those are suns, not moons. Sunset is awesome.
just like skin cancer
@@emkalinadouble the sun, double the chemo
Binary star systems are very common in our universe (as far as we now know), but that wasn't necessarily known at the time these were made. I love that Lucas decided to have Tatooine be a binary star system.
One could say...
Binary Sunset is awesome.
The editor noted it for him when he called them moons
One of my favorite behind the scenes fun facts is that the only reason Luke had a green saber as his new saber, after the other one was lost with his hand in Empire, was because the post production and CGI at the time had a hard time with a blue saber against the blue sky. So the beginning of more Saber colors began with that. It continued later on in the prequels because of Samuel L. Jackson (but I wont go into detail because of spoilers)
Also, if it was blue people probably would have been confused it with the old light saber and thought he somehow got it back.
What's spoilery about "I want a purple one to be able to find myself in crowded scenes"? That's the whole reason behind that.
11:07. those were the owners of the rancor. rancors are actually really nice pets and sadly this one is usually only given bad food so is always hungry, to their owners, this is like losing your favorite pet or close friend.
When Leia said "I know." What she meant was subconsciously she felt she had some connection to Luke, some familiar feeling but she didn't know specifically what it was.
"why'd you kiss him if you knew he was your brother" Well she didn't KNOW know... more like a strong feeling , which is why she didn't pursue any further ... but she kissed him in that moment less to express interest in Luke and more to get Han's goat. They were in the middle of fighting over her wanting him around to help and him staying cuz he likes her and her not admitting that was a factor of why she wanted him around. So the kiss was sorta like flipping Han the Bird.
Thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only one who understood it that way!
Actual science fact, most actual star systems are binary like Tatooine's system. Our single star system with just Sol on its own is actually far more rare.
cool part of that "I love you. I know" bit is it's a reflection of when she said "I love you to Han." and he replied with "I Know" in the previous film
I felt like Luke looked at his hand because he saw that both he and his father both have a robotic hand, showing that he is also just a man underneath all of that tech. And so in seeing that, and seeing that they both are the "same", it allowed Luke to rise up above what Anakin could not, thus honoring his father and the beliefs of the Jedi
Personally I saw it as him realizing that if he continued fighting especially using the anger he was at the end of the fight, he would end up going down the same path as his father
Yes, like @jonathanscott3914 said, Luke was starting to realize that he was starting down the path of becoming like his father
29:30 Leia didn’t actually know before they were siblings, but her Jedi instincts gave her some kind of feeling to that effect. She knew there was some kind of connection.
I was waiting for Alex to learn that Leia is Luke's sister hahahaha. Editor's note about being free is great! I like how you did the recap montage to showcase the previous carnage of ignorance.
I envy you for getting to see these for the first time. I would love to be able to experience these three movies again like I did when I was a kid. That's why these reactions are so great--I get to see someone else be filled with the same joy that I was. Great reactions!
Completely agree. I sometimes wish I could see certain series for the first time again. That magic is just so special
Alex I'm blown away by how you actually got all the themes of the story, most reactors dont get it in the first go, how Luke looked at his hand after cutting Vader's, nowadays people are used to being told what a character feels instead of reading the scene. Do the prequels now, is another flavor but I think you are gonna dig it.
I always read that bit as Vader took his hand and he took Vader's so they were even, and that mirror image links back to the Dagobah cave. He wasn't fighting Vader he was fighting himself.
@dahamster8032 in this scene he sees that he is becoming like his father and following the same path, that's why he throws his lightsaber and declares himself a jedi
@@modernlife1321 @dahamster8032 yeah regardless of his interpretation, I glad that he actually got one, most reactors I've seen are like "what does that mean?"
Alex you wanted to see Jedi's at the height of their power? go watch the prequel series 1, 2, 3 those movies contain the most bad az fight scenes using the lightsaber in combat. 👌
It wasn't until I read a novel version that under Vader's helmet in the Empire Strikes Back is Luke Skywalker.
Oh Lord, Alex's reaction to the big Luke/Leia reveal and the editor's comments KILLED!!! I haven't laughed this hard in a while! Great reaction as always, Alex! I think you will enjoy the prequels. And I honestly think I would have preferred to see them in release order (4-5-6 then 1-2-3) no matter what. Getting the backstory afterwards is actually much better IMO. You were wise to watch these in order. Looking forward to more!
agree. release order is best order.
Luke looking at Vader's chopped off hand always makes me think of the time he went into the cave when he was being trained by Yoda so maybe he saw that as turning into a machine like Vader himself if consumed by the dark side
Cant wait for more star wars reactions. Watching along with you (and the editor tbh) feels like watching with friends and that's quite lovely
A fun fact for most of the original trilogy: Peter Mayhew, the gentleman inside the Chewbacca suit, actually had lines to say on set for the other actors to respond to. There are video clips with on-set audio where you can hear him. The same for David Prowse, who was in the Vader suit.
And they're hilarious. Chewbacca talking in a soft-spoken British accent is GLORIOUS
Vader sounding like a farmer is pretty funny too.
Jabba was a live puppet- I think they needed to make a whole new oven to bake/prepare his skin, it was so large, and it took something like 4 puppeteers to operate him.
Edit: my favorite part of Star Wars reactions: seeing everyone- absolutely everyone- go from hating Vader at the beginning of the trilogy, to begging for him to act, to cheering for the man and then mourning him. Wonderful writing, always amazing to see.
Yeah, I think it was 2 just for just the head and then 2 for the arms, and one of those guys did the tail or something. It's an incredible piece of film engineering. Def worth watching the behind the scenes for.
and then the sequel trilogy completely invalidates his sacrifice. great job, guys
@@Turnabout What sequel trilogy? There's no sequels I've ever seen, just some crappy knock-offs made by talentless hacks that didn't like Star Wars. Sure, would be nice if we actually did get some sequels someday though, there's a ton of good books they could use.
@@SunwardRanger83 I know how you feel, but it's better to just accept that it's a product now, not art, that the franchise you care about is not in the hands of people who care about storytelling, and just let it go.
I love the release order. First you feel immediately in the action in episode four to six, then the prequels feel like a train heading for a cliff that you know tragically can't be diverted.
For episodes 4-6, the big reveal was Luke's true dad.
For Alex, it was his unaware incest shipping of Luke and Leah.
No matter how many years pass, Anakin's story always brings me to tears. 💔
Watching in the order they were released is THE ONLY WAY. Gives SO much more meaning to episodes 1-3
It also ruins them since you know who makes it out alive. Which means that the rest doesn't, one can surmise even during The Phantom Menace that something like Order 66 must eventually happen. How else could the OT be the way they are? So it spoils the prequels big time. Episode order makes the fall of Sheev and the redemption of Anakin an even greater payoff. With Rogue One in the middle it becomes a 7-movie long saga with the same plotting villain in the background, finally being overthrown in this one. And you remain clueless all the way through about who survives and who doesn't.
I would argue that you should do 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 6. Preserves the surprise of Vader being Luke's father AND it gives a better surprise of Leia being Luke's sister. Once you find out Vader is Anakin, then you watch the prequels as a kind of "flashback" before going to 6 to see Anakin's redemption.
@@magicalpjthis is the way
there is no episodes 1-3!!!!
@@magicalpj No order but the release order is acceptable. The knowledge of what happens informs the story, just like (truly) it does in BLACK WIDOW. The idea that the prequels are spoiled by the OT is just faulty. It makes the tragedy all the greater.
The sibling thing is definitely weird, but I’ve always thought that when she says “somehow I’ve always known “, she meant that they both knew from the moment they met that, in someway, for some reason, they loved each other, and felt a connection. They didn’t know that it was sibling love and connection, and in their shoes I would probably also guess that it was a different kind of love. If you feel _that strongly_ attached to someone, and you have no idea you have another sibling, you’d probably guess it was romantic too.
Also, 46:30 😂😂😂
That’s actually what tends to happen in real life, and often gets mistaken for a romantic connection 😮
It's not weird at all, in fact it's much weirder Anakin/Padme relationship, I don't know what the hell was Lucas thinking of... maybe Woody Allen?
@@JulioLeonFandinho - Oh I totally agree with you there too. I love Star Wars for SO many reasons, but the _relationships..._ ehhh generally aren't one of them. I think Han and Leia are the only normal relationship in the OG trilogy, and then in the Disney trilogy the writers even f*cked _that_ relationship up -- making them be divorced.
The rest of the relationships are really... weird. Just _inappropriate._ Making siblings kiss and _then_ realize they're siblings is weird and inappropriate. A relationship with like a 12-year age gap (Anakin and Padme) is kinda weird and a little inappropriate, to my sensibilities. Anakins mother claims "there was no father" -- wtf?? So she was the Virgin Mary incarnate??
Just really weird relationships everywhere.
There are 5 years between Anakin and Padme. In ep 1, he is 9 and she is 14.
@@MsMaggyW - Oh my bad, thanks for the correction. Maybe I assumed there was a larger age gap because he acts SO immaturely, and she acts so maturely (except when it comes to him).
Thank you for the best laugh I've had in a while with the bargain Thanos comment
And the music change when Vader dies... the high harp playing the death march.. gives me chills every time
If you pay attention you can see the arrows bouncing off the armor but that the ones that stick hit the joints. Its also established in further reading that the Ewoks (teddies) coat there arrows in what is basically strychnine or rat poison.
I cannot wait to see your reaction to the big reveal. Also, this movie contains my favorite scene in all of Star Wars. The culmination of Luke's character progression. In A New Hope he was inexperienced and a little whiny. In Empire Strikes Back he was beginning to display some power. In Return of the Jedi he wrecks an entire sail barge full of bad guys almost single handedly.
Lol
what big reveal
@@IMBLACKDAMMIT after all of Alex’s Luke and Leah commentary he’s going to find out they are brother and sister.
If you were confused why Vader was dying at the end... its his suit and helmet that keeps him alive, like a mobile life support system.... and when he picked up the Emperor, he got zapped by the lightning hands, fried his suit's electronics. So he was dead anyways, may as well lose the helmet for a minute.
Palpatine purposely made Vader's suit susceptible to Force lightening because he was well aware that most Sith masters are eventually killed by the apprentice.
Luke clips him pretty good before taking Vader's hand too. There's a reason he is slumping onto the staircase for support
Remember at the time of this film this was the Star Wars trilogy. There was no guarantee that the prequel trilogy would happen. Lucas did say he had plans but never said when that would be. So Yoda dying was just Yoda dying in the final film. No one knew he would be in any more films
Alex and his editor are the best movie reaction duo ever
When you watch The Phantom Menace (Episode I), be sure to have subtitles on because some important lines are mumbled. It helps you figure out what's really going on with Naboo. The way that the Emperor grabs power in that movie is both cruel and genius.
In case nobody mentioned, Jabba was a four man puppet. One on each arm, someone working the mouth, and a Dinklage sized guy working the tail. I think Jabba's eyes were remote controlled by someone on the set.
soory i thort it was a six man , puppet , but yea , good start to , makeing monsters real
Not to mention all of the CGI added retroactively to improve the cohesion of each film to each other
God, your reactions for Star Wars are so much fun! I love that you immediately pick up on some of the themes, such as Vader being a prisoner, or Vader being the Jedi that returns. Genuinely, your reactions to these movies are some of my favorite! I love that you vibe with the corny ass jokes and banter, but still take your time to consider and think about the themes. I’m so excited to see more!
14:41 Ijust realized why Luke was wearing a glove on the robotic hand. I was confused, since in the Empire Strikes Back, it looked like a normal hand. 39:15 I also realized that Vader said "Obi-wan have taught you well." While Luke is standing on the high ground.
ROFL I never noticed that. Omg hahahaaaaaaaa!!!
looking forward to 1-3, if they're being done. this was fun, and the editor's notes murdered me every episode. And that "big reveal" spot with the older comments... 🤣 oh man 😂
I always found it funny how Liea ends up after the speeder bike chase like she was just living with the Ewoks for so long that they even made her clothing...
It belonged to the last person the Ewoks ate.
His reaction to finding out Laia was Luke's sister was so wholesome and funny 😂
Laia? Who's that, is that the name of the lady in the Star Wars Porn parody?
Relating to the whole "Luke kissed Leia" thing, here's a true story from my own family history: When my mom was in college, she went on a date with a guy. Date went awesome and they were all set up for another when they got talking family history. Names started sounding familiar, so they did some investigating. Turned out they were distant cousins. They stopped dating after that. XD
Hah, my family has a similar story, but even worse. My mom brought home her first boyfriend from college and my grandma freaked out and totally scared the guy off. Screaming "You stay away from my daughter!" and even stopped paying for the dorm so my mom had to commute to school and everything. My mom used to bring it up all the time and joke about how strict my grandma was. Near the end of her life, my grandma confessed that my grandpa had been a serial cheater and had multiple children from tons of different women in the city and she scared away that one kid because she recognized he was actually my mom's secret half sibling!
If they were "distant cousins," removed by more than a fifth cousin, then there is / was no issue.
I understand there are some psychiatric studies that indicate siblings and cousins who don't know they're related quite frequently feel a tremendous physical attraction should they meet.
Apparently, the recognition of some sort of familiarity and similarity just *works* for some people.
It may be why the social taboos against it are so very strong -- they may have to be.
@@loupgarou95 Bruh, that's actually wild
I kind of had the opposite happened to me and my current girlfriend lol when we met we did through tinder so we only knew our first names. When we started to chat a bit more and asked each other our last names we were surprised we share one of our last names (we're mexican, so we have both of our parents last names in our full names) and we were worried we were related in some way because we live in the least populated state of Mexico, meaning that it's not that rare to find people you're distantly related to in some shape or form.
We did some asking around precisely because of these kinds of stories and found no connection, so... we're still together haha
I can't believe that after all the years and the amount of times I've watched this movie it still brings tears to my eyes when Darth Vader finally says "no" and saves his son from certain death. It's like seeing the exact moment in which Anakin wakes up. It warms and breaks my heart every single time.
Dude, i just discovered you. I really liked your narration and your energy. Let's watch episode 1 too!
You are indeed so right about the meaning of the title of this movie! It DOES mean both Luke & Anakin. Luke symbolizes the Jedi Order itself returning from being as close to destruction as you could get. And his father, Anakin, symbolizes the individual Jedi that was so lost but found his way back again.
I don't know how to express how much joy I had seeing you watch the Star Wars trilogy. I never watch people do reaction videos. But this sparks ENDLESS joy in me, and gets a giddiness inside me for the movies like I had as a child. Thank you for these videos!
Many people don't like the Ewoks, but I think it's a cool idea that it's the Ewoks that the Emperor did not foresee, so it's their inclusion that allowed the rebel forces to win.
i always thought the same - in his arrogance the emperor did not realize a underveloped tribe of space teddybears as a threat to his plans, because in his mind the empire is way to powerfull. It is the same as in the first movie, where nobody expected a fighter being able to blow up a death star that was otherwise nearly invincible. So the same arrogance and hatred for lesser beings became his downfall in the end, having lost so much of his humanity that in the end he was killed by his most loyal servant, his forces beaten by a nature tribe and his second space sation again be blown up by the "insignificiant" rebellion.
It's kind of like the Hobbits from Lord of the Rings. Sauron couldn't account for the little man and that eventually led to his defeat.
@@TheDunnDusted Exactly- I wonder if this was a purposeful homage, or if it's just a deep seated idea within the human psyche, or both
I've always thought that it's implied that the Force gives you glimpses of many possible futures when you use it in that manner. Since, according to Yoda, the future is always in motion, it can't just be one vision that's 100% accurate. So Palpatine would likely have foreseen some of these events, but due to his massive arrogance he dismissed it all as to unlikely to ever happen and choose to believe that the part of the vision of the future depicting his ultimate triumph was inevitable, when it was anything but.
Goes to show, those who think they are so advanced always think the old ancient ways of doing battle like traps and such are outdated, yet there is a reason those old ways worked...they were perfectly sound and came from THINKING rather then here's some weapons now charge ahead in the dark.
I sometimes have a hard time watching your videos, (mainly cause I feel like your jokes infer you aren’t really paying attention), but this Original Trilogy reactions series has really made me see you in a different light. Your legitimate enjoyment and excitement about these movie made me feel so unironicly happy, and your commentary made me feel like you were so invested and interested in these great films. Will definitely be watching more of you in the future, and reminding myself that your jokes are just part of how you enjoy movies.
I was 5 when the first movie came out and my family went to the theater to see if. Since that day I have been a die hard Star Wars fan. I have watched just about every Star Wars reaction video there is. You are by far the best reaction videos by far. I remember when I was 11 in 1983, I was watching TV. and saw the first Commercial for Return Of Jedi. I jumped up screaming for joy. No other movie series has ever made me do that.
fun fact, the scene near the beginning with the green lady getting sent to the rancor monster, the original ended with her falling through the trap door. Then years later the lady looked exactly the same for them to film her in the pit
43:19 Palpatine fried Vaders suit when he threw him into the abyss, visible by the x-ray-effect showing his skull loonytoons style through his helmet, and without his lifesupport he cant live
44:35 He looks like that because when he got made into Darth Vader He had skin burnt from fighting Obi Wan Kenobi, And all his battles and he used to be A jedi
15:43 Yoda is his name, but it's never been made clear what alien species Yoda belongs to, what they are called, or where they originate from, though there have been a couple other creatures that are of the same species whom you will meet if you continue further with the series. And yes, they all seem to have really long lifespans like Yoda.
Dude, thank you for making me relive the magic of these movies through your eyes! Loved your jokes and nicknames for the characters. Instant follow!
Welcome to the family! Stoked you’re here!
She has the force in her, which explains why, even without training, she's a badass. Everybody gets so inflamed about the kiss with Luke. It's not like there was tongue. Sheesh. When she said she knew, what she meant was she had a feeling about Luke, an affinity towards him without really knowing why. The mechanical hand resembles his destiny, just as when Luke fought the image of Vader in the cave and saw his own face in the helmet. The emperor zapped Vader's ass as he was being thrown to his death. You get the answers to your questions in the prequels.
The book hints that Leia had something assisting her while she choked Jabba.
How I looked at Vader having a mechanical hand, and how a lot of other people look at it too, is that he is seeing similarities between him and his father, and sees that they aren't that different.
