    This is a great video on using Time-Sert. I found another video ("How to find TDC the 'easy' way" by EricTheCarGuy) using a vacuum gauge attached to a compression gauge hose to determine when a cylinder is on compression stroke. The clarity of the explanation in your video... showing why as well as how... is very helpful, and gives me the confidence to try this. Thanks!

    I know this was a few years back. But thank you Jim for a brilliant instructional lesson on spark plug socket re tap. Cheers Rich . PS I just wandered if you can get a mini vacuum cleaner, like what a dentist uses to extract the swarf ?

    I used the same timesert kit on my stripped spark plug on my kawasaki prairie 300 atv. Kit wasn't cheap..93 bucks, but worked flawlessly. We did to pull the head on it though and put a new gasket on it. Also put a little header permatex sealant on the insert before installing it. Well Now it runs better than ever.

    Excellent demonstration!
    Clear and super detailed.
    I followed it to re-thread my XT250 1980 but must have done a mistake...?
    Aside the fact I should have re-threaded a little deeper (I stopped too early, the insert's top is almost 1mm higher than the plug hole entrance, I thought it would be cancelled by screwing harder..), I must have miss-handled something :
    the piston seems now blocked by something in the cylinder (or crankcase ?) and I can't turn the flywheel further than a point near the TDC. Then it seriously "clonks" against something and movement is stopped... both ways (clock & counter-clock).
    Any way to solve this without pulling the head off ?
    I am sure nothing was left in the chamber by mistake.
    I had no problem turning the flywheel before re-threading; but could turning the flywheel the wrong way have any bad impact on timing chain/valves/crankcase,etc... and fall, blocking the piston/rod assy ?
    I just used compressed air to blow (a lot) of aluminum chips away, when piston was 1/2 up on compression TDC.
    Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

    Wonderful video, thank you. Any opinion on time-sert versus helicoil threaded inserts? I know TS is more solid, but would a HC work with this application? Very nice trailer, by the way.

    Great video James. I hope to never use was I've learned here. For this very reason I treat the mundane task of changing a spark plug like open heart surgery.

    I have found that the R&G crash bungs for my Honda CBR1000RR-2006, well mainly the one on the left just continued turning, thought I had the wrong length bolt but it looks like it's the thread in the cylinder head/engine mounting point.
    Could you please advise me what I should do. Helicoil or Timesert and if Timesert, Carbon Steel insert of Stainless Steel from front face or rear face?
    Any advice would be really appreciated.

    Hi James, thank you for your videos, do you know what is the ideal time to change my spark plugs, is it every 4000 miles? I also ride a CBF 1000. Thank you, Marcos

    My yamaha r1 shot a plug out the head. I am attempting to repair this with the helicoil insert kit. After reviewing your video, the kit shown seems more promising. My spark plug thread size is M10x1.0
    Does the kit you have used in this video come in the size that i need and if so, how can i get my hands on one?

    The Honda dealer close to me charged me over 6 hours to repair my front engine mounts with the Timeserts but they advised me that they needed to drain the radiator and swing the engine forward.
    I am concerned that this hasn't been done correctly.
    Would you be able to advise me please?

    Ok I need your help Sir. Is top dead center good enough to perform this job or should I crank it around a little more or a little less? I can open the valve cover and check the valves but I'm not sure about the piston. Thank you.

      Watch this more up to date video I made: th-cam.com/video/ygT0XZZald4/w-d-xo.html
      TDC is no good you'll end up hitting the piston with the tap if you're not careful. About 1/3 of the way down the compression stroke is ideal.

    • @paulbrasfield1594
      @paulbrasfield1594 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SuperbikeSurgeryTV Thank you sir...I think I'm ready to do this job ...I just need to trouble you to answer one more question.... OK...so as I'm looking at the valves I should be waiting on the intake valve to open and then close and then I'm effectively on the compression stroke with the piston starting to head upwards.......is this about correct?

    • @SuperbikeSurgeryTV
      @SuperbikeSurgeryTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that's roughly correct assuming you are turning the engine in the correct direction. If you are at TDC on the compression stroke you'll also have (valve) clearance on both intake and exhaust.

    I bought a thread repair kit : www.ebay.com/itm/Spark-Plug-Thread-Repair-Metric-Rethreading-Tool-Kit-M14-1-25-Tap-Screw-Inserts/123618117954?epid=27029079720&hash=item1cc836c942:g:AFsAAOSwi6dcT9SF
    But It's a little different to your one. It has a socket shaft that the tap goes into and then the seat cutter you mention goes on top and a grub screw holds it in from the dise so it doesn't fall out, so I'm guessing you can cut the thread for the insert and then the seat at the same time. theres one tap that is the size of the normal threa and then then one with the standard thread on the tip and then going to the size to cut for the insert. I'm guessing you might use one after the other? thanks anyway.

    Pro Tip. If you put grease into your thread tap tool it will catch the swarf as you cut the new thread.
