  • Quick Fix of a stripped out spark plug hole
    TAP you'll need for M12-1.25 plug : amzn.to/2Pq2LJ3
    1977 Honda Trail 70 ct70
    Went from the stock M10-1.00 to M12-1.25 plug
    TAP: amzn.to/2Pq2LJ3
    D8HS NGK I ended up taking this one out and am now using a D6HS NGK amzn.to/2LGKFQQ
    use a D6HS NGK
    You'll need a m12-1.25 tap and a 27/64" drill bit to predrill for the tap.

    Dude, I love the creativity of using compressed air. I'm going to try this today on a little Honda 80 dirt bike. Since it's not my bike afterwards I think I'm going to fill the cylinder with fluid maybe ATF like you did simply because I have tons of ATF around the shop, And then use my Shop-Vac to vacuum out the ATF just in case there are any particles that I missed with the air.

    Those early 6 volt Honda 70 cylinder heads are a performance upgrade for the Honda C90E cub engines (85cc) both the C70 (72cc)and the C90E are the same bore size. The C70 head has bigger valves. The cylinder can be overbored to 79cc using the Honda XR75K1 aftermarket 80cc piston kit and the camshaft reprofiled by having 1mm ground from the base circle, the Greeks sell these aftermarket cams and using a different manifold, a larger carburettor from the Honda SL70/XL70 can be used. From my tuning files.

    I bought my 72 F-100 in '97; a long time exhaust leak eroded both heads and both manifolds. I used Never-Seez on the bolts and gaskets. I loosened a bolt last summer with an open-end wrench and it turned right out w/o any trouble. In the shipyard, other pipefitters bitched about me using Never-Seez on everything. The leaks disappeared and I didn't have to go into 4 inches of bilgewater twice.
    Put it on all spark plugs and they'll Never-Seez!

  • @BulletmanDoom
    @BulletmanDoom 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @BulletmanDoom
      @BulletmanDoom 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jamie Buckley Yes that could work if it's worth doing. A lot of the time particularly with small single cylinder engines it's easier to replace the head/block. More often than not the water jacket corrodes through long before the plug threads get damaged so the block needs replacing anyway.

    HI, This is a great post, very informative, helped me a lot! Now I am hoping you can answer for me, if the front and rear shocks on a 1970 CT 70 can be rebuilt or at least have new oil added to them? I think mine need oil, because I am bottoming out when I ride. I hope you can help. Thank you.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +flywelder I've never rebuild these myself. I assume they are made like most motorcycle shocks and have seals that tear and leak out the oil. Generally the front shocks on motorcycles are rebuildable but not the rears.

      +josh steele You just need to buy the new tap. Ebay is your best bet. I went from the stock M10-1.00 to M12-1.25 plug so I just bought a M12-1.25 tap.

  • @frankbutaric3565

    I just repaired a moto guzzi spark plug hole using a repair kit from advanced auto ($29). While your tip works it is far too easy to oversized hole with the drill bit. Also one must be extra careful as the intake valve partially obscures the plug hole and it would be easy to gouge it with the drill. Another thing is to make sure the tap is perpendicular to original hole. These factors makes the tip difficult for the novice.
    The advance auto kit comes with inserts, spreader and a 3 step tap. First step is the original thread, second is the drill/ rename and the third step matches the insert thread.
    The first step follows the original threads or what is left of them. This centers the tool and draws the tool into the head. The second step enlarges the hole so it matches the desired tapping dimension. As the tap is pulled through the third step makes threads. After tapping clean out hole, insert spark plug into insert and use red lock tight on outside insert threads. Insert must have knurled portion towards outside of head. Install plug and insert and wait for locktite to cure. Remove spark plug and using spreader tool and hammer expand the insert. IMO this method, even though seems to have more steps, is easier for the novice.

    I have a 1978 Honda express nc50 with the same spark plug problem can I get any recommendations about that and whit to do

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +tavish dozier The Trail 70 in the video came stock with a 10mm plug that I was able to bore up to a 12mm plug. It looks like your nc50 comes stock with a larger plug to begin with(14mm). So there isn't much room to to go bigger but they do sell 16mm plugs but it will be hard to find one with the specs you need. You can throw on a new/used head www.ebay.com/itm/1978-78-HONDA-NC50-EXPRESS-CYLINDER-HEAD-/381335110456?hash=item58c9580338&vxp=mtr or install a helicoil www.amazon.com/Helicoil-5334-14--Thread-Thread-Repair/dp/B0002SRF4O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1441392417&sr=8-1&keywords=m14+spark+plug+repair

    Great video. I have a stripped spark plug hole on my '72 Honda CL175; is 12mmx1.25 also correct for my bike? I feel I can save the original hole rather than go oversize.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have a 12mm plug then yes. Running a tap into it will only make it worse though as it will cut away any holding threads.

Thanks man the video is awesome and helps a lot. I couldn't find a 10mm ×1.0 anywhere in Indianapolis so I ordered from China $25. Been a week and shipping info says 11 more days. Hah! I have exactly the same problem with my 1970 Trail 70. But I don't have a big compressor. I don't think my little pancake compressor would do it. Think the BBQ grill trick and aluminum brazing would work?

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      A pancake compressor will work just fine. You may have to stop and let it ketch up. The aluminum brazing is messy and not very precise. I did attempt brazing a scrap small engine head before I did this and I have very poor results.

    A Save-A-Thread insert kit would work. It has a steel insert. Aluminum tends to expand and can cause that plug to pop out. Use Loct-tite high strength sealer on the threads of the insert.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but the price of a thread kit for these tiny plugs is more than just buying a brand new head. I've done a few of these now and haven't had any issues.

    • @martystevens3969
      @martystevens3969 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      sixtyfiveford I forgot that the Save-A-Thread is a 14x1.25. Your method is o.k. It works by drilling and tapping it to a 12mm. It IS alot cheaper than a insert kit. In the future, if it strips out, use a Time-Sert kit. The reamer forms the seat. You run it down until it stops. The expander locks the insert in. A Heli-coil can be drilled wrong. Aluminum expands with heat. Use a EZ out to remove inserts. So, GOOD JOB!!

    So I am now dealing with this issue. I have been messing with the a CT-90 for a few days and the threads are GONE. I did see the link below to the spark plug you suggested to buy, however, are you saying you only bought the tap? How did you get the tap in without a tool. I may be missing something but just wanted some clarification before I start buying things to repair mine haha.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Conner Henderson You don't need a special tool to use a tap. You can use a tap with a monkey wrench, Vise grips, or a open end wrench if need be. In the video I find a socket that fits it good and just use my ratchet. Here's the tap you need www.amazon.com/Century-Drill-Tool-97319-Carbon/dp/B011NDEBYI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1440995204&sr=8-1&keywords=m12-1.25+tap

    • @dubvbaseball7
      @dubvbaseball7 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +sixtyfiveford I see, I am not very familiar with taps so forgive me for stupid questions haha. So you just ratchet that tool (tap) in and basically create "new threads" on the inside of the spark plug hole then put the new spark plug in?

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, that's it. You just need to make sure you put a little oil on the tap(motor oil or WD40) and screw it in straight. You'll need a 27/64 drill bit to pre-drill the hole before you tap it.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      All my drill bits are imperial. The online chart calls for a 27/64 inch(which I used) or a 10.8mm drill bit so if you had a 10.5mm that would be optimal or you can use a 10mm and wiggle it around a little to loosen up the hole to around 10.5-8. Since this is drilling into aluminum you can drill the hole slightly smaller than normal. I would test first on a random scrap.

      You know it. I was researching for a friend of mine, his stripped too. Even though he saw this he still JB welded it in. LMAO... I guess he didn't want to do the work to save a few bucks.

      JB WELD is great in the right application. It will probably hold for a few drive cycles, but will blow out the plug at a very inopportune time.

      @sixtyfiveford  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dario Cence It is. It was fouling the first plug a little so I went to a hotter D6HS NGK and it has worked great for the past 2 years. No issues at all.

    You put a shorter plug in the hole? LOL Lower compression, etc. Sure, it works and runs. All of what 8 hp stock anyways? Wow, way too much talking about useless crap. Glad everyone else liked it.
