    Your simplistic style belies the fact that you are an accomplished user of the knife and communicator. This beats all the over production drama, hype, graphs and is honestly the best. knife recommendation video on the net. In these trying times I find watching you wield these knives with skill , care and respect very relaxing. Thanks you Phurong Nguyen and I hope you and yours are healthy and safe.

      The Spyderco blade geometry and grind is not optimized for the task. The title compares blade steels but blade steel and geometry go hand-in-hand.
      I have a Spyderco Resillience, and it's a compact hard-use folder with a beefy spine. Also, the Spyderco is 100% serviceable and the handle design will be grippier and more comfortable long after you've had hand fatigue using the Opinel. Both are great knives for different uses. EDC are a very very tough market, and you can easily lighten your wallet trying to get the "perfect" one that does better on most EDC tasks, or you can buy a few different knives for the specific tasks. This just exposes that.

      Wade Jensen its because its very very thin at and behind the edge compared to the other knives and its convex. Opinel are some if not the best in blade geometry out there to bad they dont make more modern folders or fixed blades with a little better steels and hardness they would dominate the market as they do now with their traditional folders.

  • @mrgeorgejetson
    @mrgeorgejetson 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Looks like Buck is the clear winner here, but this still leaves many questions, other than what brand of knife you should buy if you want to put it through some fairly rough use. I say this because the heat treatment and blade geometry both count for something, maybe as much as the makeup of the steel itself. Buck might produce harder 420HC steel than Spyderco does with its 8Cr13MoV, and it's clear from the video that the blade on that Buck is considerably beefier than either of the others (the real shocker here is how well the Opinel stood up--pretty amazing at any price, given the relative flimsiness of the blade, but downright amazing for a knife you can get for under $20!).
    I have a Leatherman folder in 420HC that I'm very fond of, and for a long time I used it or everything from EDC-type tasks, to heavier use on camping trips. However, the Spyderco Tenacious in 8Cr13MoV that I bought earlier this year seems to retain its edge for longer. In general, this is what you'd expect: the Spyderco, being made of "harder" stainless steel, keeps an edge longer but is a little harder to sharpen than the "softer" carbon steel blade, which dulls a bit more quickly. But those scare quotes are there for a reason: to indicate that the hardening process also plays a major role in the finished product, which means that depending on the manufacturing process, you could very well get the opposite result, as you do in this video.
    To my mind, this demo is more about the specific brands and models being tested than about the steels, per se. Good work on the video, by the way. It's a great example of "pure" documentary cinema that gets straight to the point.

      s30v is much higher. Its also a steel that can be pushed much further for the blade geometry as well. The Opinel is a great knife, but not a do-it-all EDC. The PM2 is much much more capable at more tasks than than the Opinel, and the ergos will be far better for you hand deep into its usage, and its fully serviceable. The great thing about the Opinels is that you can carry it, use it, and if you break it, and replace it for less than a few beers at the pub.

      Josh K sorry but for tough or long cutting an Ipinel would feel much better in hand than a pm2. You saw how the resilience was hurting his hand and it doesn't have that compression lock cutout that's a we'll know hit spot. I love my elmax pm2, I put thicker marble c.f. scales on it and it has a Krein regrind so it's a laser but after cutting a bunch of cardboard it made my hand sore.
