Opinel Carbon N10 vs Buck 110

  • XC90 vs 420HC
    Hi everyone,
My intention was to simply test cutting performance of the blades with "cheap" steel level, i.e. plain carbon steel (Opinel No. 10) vs. stainless 420HC (Buck 110). I did not mean to compare working performance of two blades of different price levels.
Well, I realize the music is not so cute to the most people's taste. It was just my maiden experimental dubbing, so please pardon the noise

I have both an Opinel and a 110, I love them both, for different reasons. But I had the 110 for 36 years---that's toughness and longevity in a knife that you gotta respect.

You would expect the Buck to perform this task well, as it has such a beefy profile. But for those unfamiliar with Opinel knives, don't let the lightness in weight or thinness of blade deceive you. The Opinel, as you saw in this video is equally up to the task. It's no wonder Opinels are world famous. 👍👍👍

I like both Opinel (in the carbon steel!) and Buck. The Buck used to me too heavy but now they have introduced an LT model with FRN handles, no liner. They are great! The Buck is thicker steel designed for toughness, the Opinel is designed to be a folding kitchen knife (in terms of thinner blade, better edge geometry for veggies and slicing meats like salami which tends to split). Better to have them both than to have to choose! Impressed that the Opinel wood handle and shallow tang held up ok.

Edge performance was about the same. But if I were to have the job of cutting up 100 coconuts, I'd take the Buck because of the better ergonomics. An Opinel is also ergonomic for lighter tasks, but they'll fuck your hand up if you have to do hours of heavy duty cutting.

  • @zebradun7407
    @zebradun7407 ปีที่แล้ว +2

A Matter of personal choice, I have both, I prefer carrying the Opinel 6, 7 and 9 according to what my day is planned.
Same with the Buck 110 or similar.
I prefer the Opinel lighter and thinner blades, if I am going to cut vines, light wood I go with the thicker larger blade.

  • @stevehuffman7453

Without watching the video, I know the results.
The Opinel is the better cutter/slicer, thanks to the thin blade stock and acute edge geometry.
The 110 is more robust, and possibly more ergonomic for consecutive hours of use. Provided you're not doing something stupid, like stabbing something, either blade lock is suffiently strong for normal use. A slight advantage going to the Opinel, however, for the blade lock that the use of which is optional.
I've never used the blade lock on any of my Opinel's. I've never cut or amputated any body parts by not using the lock, either.
(Opinel didn't even add the ring lock on the size 6 and above until 1955. The size 5 and smaller still don't have it.)
Neither is suitable for batoning or chopping. Which, as Vinnie has proven time, and time again, isn't necessary if you rely on skill and finesse, rather than brute force. 👍
Mr. Vinnie, a Question if you don't mind?
Have you ever tried any of the Portuguese MAM friction folders? They make them with or without a "Press to Release" TL29 Electrician's type liner lock.
Personally, I prefer the lockless. I have the "large" sheepsfoot and "medium" MAM3A spear point (which they call a drop point) Both 4 inch closed with a 3.5 inch blade.

The Buck is as we all know a great knife but it comes down to geographics... the buck 110 is obviously cheaper to buy in the US whereas in the UK and Europe it’s expensive.. £55 ($74) if you shop around but the usual price is £80 ($108)!!! Compared to £12 ($16) for Opinel No10 Carbon! Vietnam it’s about the same price difference and if you can just about get away with doing your thing with the Opinel rather than the brilliant Buck 110 at 6 -1 it’s a no brainer,
