I have the full coverage warranty for my 18’STI. 8 months of getting it brand new 2 years ago, I went Cobb AP stage 1+ big SF intake ots tune. Since then I’ve had my brakes/rotors done, camshaft carrier replaced, rear struts replaced, one of the exhaust replaced, all covered by warranty even with my intake and Access Port still installed. New exhaust will affect warranty if it throws off o2 codes. It’s all about the dealer and if the tune or mods directly affect damage to the car.
I’m in a similar situation, but I bought mine with these mods (I don’t think the dealer knew what the hell he was selling), but am obviously still worried about my warranty not covering things. Hopefully I have the same luck as you
Answering on the topic: I believe that first 10k miles should be driven without any modifications to the powertrain. Let the car to "bed in" and "break in", get all the little nuances fixed under warranty, 10k will be enough for some good oil tests in oil test labs to see if everything is good with the engine and transmission AND THEN... start to modify as you want and void the warranty. That's IMHO, of course. Just sharing my opinion
Thats not a bad way of looking at it, I did not start really nodding mine until about 12K miles or so. Like you said gives some time for parts to fail of they're going to
my rule of thumb is: If it's your only vehicle, and you're still making payments on it, then it's not worth it. If it is not your only vehicle, you don't care if it blows or you're rich. Then SEND IT!!
Maybe a way to upgrade the turbo and keep the warranty is to order the s209 turbo through Subaru and have them install the part. Assuming the turbo used is a Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) part might make this a little bit easier since the part is directly available from the manufacturer. I'm sure the people at the dealership will try to push back or maybe drag their feet when investigating if it is possible while maintaining the warranty. Of course, they will charge you more than if you went somewhere else and had the exact same part installed.
As an owner of a few sti/wrxs... Essentially it comes down to 2 things: do you have north of $6k to replace the engine if something goes wrong? If yes, mod it up and enjoy the car. If no, do some fun mods (cat back, exterior mods, etc.) and enjoy the car as is stock. These new WRX FA’s seem to be good motors and same thing with the improved EJ in the 2018+ but these motors are known to pop. There are plenty of supporting mods to increase longevity in these engines but most people look past these and just go for “bang for buck” parts (exhaust, tune, e85) and call it a day there. P.s. I’ve been through 2 EJ motor replacements , one car stock, the other modified.

I have an 8yr/80000 Mile warranty ( idk if that’s dealership or an upgraded option every dealer offers ) and my dealership said that an Ets Catback won’t void it. However I’m moving states soon and worried what the new dealership will say even though the exhaust shouldn’t be too much of a cause for engine failure
So I have an '18 STI and I just installed coilovers and control arms and still under warranty. I feel like I voided the warranty, but I'm not sure. What do you think? I don't really plan on doing anything to the engine until after the warranty.
OK Smee, I smashed ya. This was a good vid on a well worn topic. BTW, what kind of a track owner would collect data on customers and then share it with dealerships?
Hey bud! Could you recommend any specific Pad/rotor combo for a 2019 WRX STi with the larger Brembos?? The dealer quoted parts only over $3k. The car is a daily driver, and sees a road course 2-3x a year on an intermediate level. Thank you!
Yo Smeed, just did a TH-cam search on Cobb Stage 2 Drivetrain package installs. Plenty of stg 1, none on the Stage 2. Just giving you ideas and helping you spend your cash.
I say void that warranty however cause my 17 sti blew the fuck up into flames literally at 13k miles and was still stock and they held me in a loan for a minute til I got the 18.
If I was to do it again I would of bought one with a built motor, all the fueling, turbo, and supporting mods done already. People sink 10s of thousands of dollars into these cars then get sick and or fed up with it. They will never see any of the money back they sunk into the car. One would be lucky if they received book value. Just need to do a hell of an inspection first.

Glad you touched on the “just put the stock tune back on” argument. It’s not as easy as that. I am thinking about replacing it with the Cobb Big SF Intake, along with adding the Cobb access port into my car. I would love to know if this affects my warranty in any way that should make me reconsider doing this. Thank you!
Swapping the intake will require at minimum an OTS Tune. Tuning the ECU will change thr PID number. That will raise a red flag to subaru if a warranty claim were to happen
ER Rodz my buddy had warranty work done and ran into this issue and took out the intake and obviously the AP and actually had no issues at the dealership! Just saying.

It’s interesting because this video is very relevant to me right now! I’ve decided that I’ll probably stick with most of the warranty before I do the things I want to, (mainly suspension, tire size, transmission improvements, and the engine reliability mods you mentioned), but I won’t wait half of the life of the vehicle to do so. But, yeah, just got it two weeks ago so I’ve got a lot of time to plan..and I’m still in the break in period so I haven’t gotten the entire feel of the car yet. At least watching your videos let’s me vicariously experience the joys of modding - thanks man!
I too have a 2020 WRX that I bought in late November. I still only have of this evening 3200 miles on it. Getting close to my 3rd oil change. LOL! As for mods, I'm a bit undecided about this. I want the AOS, but that seems like a clear violation of the engine warranty. Even though its what the car should have on it from the factory and it will help the engine last longer. I need to do more research and talk to a couple local shops who work closely with Subaru dealerships locally. But like you I think I will leave the heavy duty engine power mods alone for now. At the moment I'm working on improving the factory brakes. They are fairly terrible (non-Sports package)! My next mod is a set of Goodridge braided lines all the way around and some DOT5.1 brake fluid. I've already done the brake master cylinder brace. If the lines don't improve things enough for me then I'm moving on to the 4 pot front calipers and 2 pot rears. Then handling related mods. And a few more exterior goodies.
Hmmm, this makes hesitate even on those longevity mods like AOS - as my first Subaru i do admit I have 0 knowledge on the engine but do wanna install those mods to keep it running in long term. Shall I just go ahead? Will that consider as low risk?
Smeedia yeah I have a buddy used to work on Subarus so I am sure he can help me with that. Nice content as usual and looks like you have been uploading a lot so I haven’t been up to date on your video, great work!!!
Should you void your warranty ? From a Subaru technicians standpoint, no I would not recommend it. Point being because a lot of customers can’t afford the repairs as they are quite expensive. To second that, a lot of you DIY’ers don’t know what the hell your working on/looking at a majority of the time. Also stay away from OTS tunes . They’re all quite finicky in my opinion
Agreed OTS is not good, and wanted to make sure in covered those aspects that it's not it's not was days a cheep fix and do you actually know what your doing 😅
i just got a 2018 sti 2 week ago and the car have factory warranty and unlimited lifetime warranty. and i just put a cobb SF+ AP on the car . do you think it void unlimited lifetime warranty? i buy the lifetime warranty for $2,500
You can get your money back for what you spent on the warranty at the dealer. Bht if you already flashed a map on the car then they will be able to tell and you've voided it. Most need to contribute the failure to thr mod but a retune will auto decline the car
Luckily I have an awesome dealership. I had to go to two different Subaru dealerships to find one that didn't blow. But the one I've been going to for 3 years does not give a crap about mods. The same Tech in the same service person I deal with said as long as I'm not using nitrous or a bigger turbo they don't care. They replace my throw out bearing because it's been revised three times already and Subaru for some reason cannot get that fixed under warranty three times. As well as my fork and a few other things from the transmission. And that's me having that tune accessport, exhaust group in Mount and a few other little goodies.
I have some 2nd gear issues (cold start it sort of grinds and my car is 2019 sti)... all I have is an AP, AOS and conservative time. Would this void my warranty for transmission issue? I’m still tryna do my research because they just keep saying it’s fine.... help?
It shouldn't void your warranty, transmission issues are generally separated when it comes to that aspect. Unless you changed the mounts or bushings you should be fine for warranty purposes
Steve Kim I have a 2019 STI as well and mine does the same when it’s cold and goes away after it warms up. I hear it’s normal and if you change your gear oils it helps
I think I've done everything I can to my 18 wrx without voiding the warranty, and boooy do I love those mud flaps!

@@GolfCoyote exactly, they've tuned e of my STIs 🔥
Highly controversial! Stuck on this
I have an 8yr/80000 Mile warranty ( idk if that’s dealership or an upgraded option every dealer offers ) and my dealership said that an Ets Catback won’t void it. However I’m moving states soon and worried what the new dealership will say even though the exhaust shouldn’t be too much of a cause for engine failure
A catback shlukdent cause any type if engine failure and you should be just fine 🔥
So I have an '18 STI and I just installed coilovers and control arms and still under warranty. I feel like I voided the warranty, but I'm not sure. What do you think? I don't really plan on doing anything to the engine until after the warranty.
You should be fine, if you get an alignment they will align it to OE specs so technically everything will still be the same.
Good vid man!!!! Mmmmm biscuits
That’s awesome 👍🏻
Gotta risk it 🙌🔥
I have lifetime warranty but.................. lmao I’m 450 miles in and I want to go turbo back exhaust and bigger intercooler. With a pro tune
Lol I don't blame you, I can't not mod the car 😅🔥
OK Smee, I smashed ya. This was a good vid on a well worn topic. BTW, what kind of a track owner would collect data on customers and then share it with dealerships?
Some do, don't know why but happened to one of my buddy's. Granted he was in the wrong but still kinda fucked
@@Smeedia That's crazy. Sometimes track owners have cash flow problems. They probably sold the data.
Rotated turbo gang at 12k miles ✌
Early on! I like your style 🔥
the rev hang on wrx would make any sane person get a tune
You've got a point 🤣
“I just fucking caught that” Hahahah yes
Thumbs up for the ninja fly catch. Oh and the great content.
Lol I was totally surprised I actually caught the fly 🤣🤣🤣
Hey bud! Could you recommend any specific Pad/rotor combo for a 2019 WRX STi with the larger Brembos?? The dealer quoted parts only over $3k. The car is a daily driver, and sees a road course 2-3x a year on an intermediate level. Thank you!
Stoptech slotted pads and street rotors, they're reasonably priced and work very well! 🔥
Good Vid man. Just subbed! Question: do you have a vid on longevity mods for WRX vs. STI, outside of what you noted in this video? ‘17 WRX, 48k miles
I have a reliability video I made but not necessarily on all gravity mods but! I might make one on that now 😅
Smeedia highly, highly considering modifying mine but not sure it’s worth it for a WRX given the mileage and Currently paying on it
Actually Subaru’s warranty covers brakes. Big plus
Man, this is the question, isn’t it!
The big one we all face 😅
I voided my warranty the DAY I drove it off the lot... FUCK SUBARU dealership lol
Yo Smeed, just did a TH-cam search on Cobb Stage 2 Drivetrain package installs. Plenty of stg 1, none on the Stage 2. Just giving you ideas and helping you spend your cash.
We will be doing some of thos with the BRZ here in the next week or so 😁
The biscuit must be attained at all costs
We must get the biscuit, no matter the cost!
FULL SEND OOOOOH!!
SEND ITTTTTTTT
I say no, but that's because I'm only 18 (basically 19), and I really really don't feel like coughing up hundreds or thousands because of my mod
Viable reason 🔥🙌
Good stuff man, Damn Good Stuff!
Thanks!
Appreciate the awesome feedback!
What was the mileage when you bought your STI used? Was it completely stock when you bought as well?
Compltley stock and about 8K miles on it
I say void that warranty however cause my 17 sti blew the fuck up into flames literally at 13k miles and was still stock and they held me in a loan for a minute til I got the 18.
Are we talking about a VOIDED warranty or Denied claim? If that's the case can you just revert back to stock calibration.....
Subaru sealers can pull the history and see reflashes on the ECU, reverting back to the OE Tune won't clear the history off the memory
of course its a rally car lol, its got the word rally as part of its name!
🤣🤣🤣
So it's worth to get a salvage title one and modify the hell out of it? It's like 75% cheaper
Worth it depending on how it was salvaged 😅
@@Smeedia rear ended just cosmetic issues without damaged in the drivetrain please 🥵
@@aleekkk1 not a bad deal if you can snag one for a good price 👀
If I was to do it again I would of bought one with a built motor, all the fueling, turbo, and supporting mods done already. People sink 10s of thousands of dollars into these cars then get sick and or fed up with it. They will never see any of the money back they sunk into the car. One would be lucky if they received book value. Just need to do a hell of an inspection first.
@@Dave-so7sf usually the ones you found on auction have been ripped of all mods if not they are high mileage so you never know about the maintenance record it's not worthy knowing they are salvage title I just want a low mileage one and modified myself nothing crazy just longevity mods and exterior for flexing on the gram 😂
Glad you touched on the “just put the stock tune back on” argument. It’s not as easy as that. Everyone’s ready to mod but not everyone is ready to spend 5k+ when that bad boy EJ decides it’s done rumbling. IMO if you want to mod go for it. But don’t cry to your service technician when you can’t afford to pay to play. We all like cars it’s not our fault you had all of the boost and none of the tune.
That's my point exactly, you gotta pay to pay and cant try to claim warranty when something goes wrong
If i had 2 cars, yup no brainer.
My apologies if it’s a stupid question but.. Does putting on brand name exhausts void the warranty too?
Catbacks are totally safe for warranty purposes 😁
I just want to do the shifter mods because stock shifter in a wrx is way worse then the fun sti one. Too scared to pull the trigger at 2k miles new
yes

the Dealership i just got my 2020 STI from included a limited lifetime powertrain warranty and im so torn on mods. i want to do the all the quality of life mods when my 7 year 100k extended warranty is up but i think that will void the lifetime limited which sucks!
Sometimes you've just gotta send it 🤫
what do you mean by reliability?
All supporting longevity mods to increase the life span of the car 👀
Subaru wouldn't even replace my rusted lower control arms on my wrx.
Was it just surface rust? 👀
@@Smeedia Never examined it up close but they had a tsb out for it. Shoulda just replaced them all.
Have you ever heard anything as far as catbacks? I’ve heard it doesn’t void the warranty.
Totally good for catbacks. Confirmed they do not void warranty
Smeedia thank you I really appreciate you replying! Love your content man! Keep up the amazing job!
Hey! I own a 2021 wrx and was wondering if switching out the intake would void my warranty.
Shiiiitttt, lol, just said goodbye to mine, sf intake and accessport...reflash and sayonara warranty, at 51k miles
ER Rodz my buddy had warranty work done and ran into this issue and took out the intake and obviously the AP and actually had no issues at the dealership! Just saying.
@@Treverswain1 just hope i don't run any issues my car is not a daily and I'll get protune any time soon. But thats good to know, thats why I always keep the oem parts, never know.
Aye mate I’m stuck between a 2018 wrx or a 2018 wrx sti
Depends on what you want out of the car and your budget 🤔
If you're stuck between the two. I'm assuming you can afford either one. If so, get the STI. Definitely won't disappoint.
Tanner, should I remove the turbo pill on my 2017 sti? Or is that a wrx thing only?
There is not one in the newer ones to my knowledge 👀
@@Smeedia I am not sure , just seen a bunch of video on wrx's .

Yo tanner, I left out some info on a product recommendation..ANGELWAX-Enigma AIO...GRAB IT
I'll definitely look into it, have not heard of said product before 🤔
Cylinder 4 cooling mod for the sti, is this a item that could cause a denial to a warranty claim?
Yes it could, but would heavily depend on what the failure is
Has anything broke on the car that wasn’t your doing or related to a mod you did that you had to replace yourself because you voided your warranty?
Nope, the car has been 100% since owning it. Had a issue where my key fob wouldent connect but aside from that it's been perfect
Interesting, because I just bought a 2020 WRX with 100,000 mile warranty
They have some warranties through dealers which are separate this is just based off of the standard warranty Subaru offers
Thanks for the heart Smeedia!
Send it, the longevity mods will help to.mitigate any potential issues.
Smeedia yeah I have a buddy used to work on Subarus so I am sure he can help me with that. Nice content as usual and looks like you have been uploading a lot so I haven’t been up to date on your video, great work!!!

I’m not going to risk it for the biscuit I guess I can’t get a Perrin short ram cuz it will void my extended warranty :(
That it will, maybe later down the line but you've got all the time to mod 😁
Maybe after it’s paid off lol
Subaru doesn’t warranty your car if you track it?? Their promo videos show the car racing around a track lol. Wtf
They've got a disclaimer at the bottom of the screen lol
@@Smeedia such fuckery
Should you void your warranty ? From a Subaru technicians standpoint, no I would not recommend it. Point being because a lot of customers can’t afford the repairs as they are quite expensive. To second that, a lot of you DIY’ers don’t know what the hell your working on/looking at a majority of the time. Also stay away from OTS tunes . They’re all quite finicky in my opinion
Agreed OTS is not good, and wanted to make sure in covered those aspects that it's not it's not was days a cheep fix and do you actually know what your doing 😅
I voided my 2018 STI 200 miles in! You got to pay to play. #Boostlife
Yessssss!!!
Let's be real here...who keeps their wrx/sti stock? That's like trying to keep teenage boys from watching porn...

I am the warranty
I am the walrus
My 18 STI came with a 7yr 100,000 mile CPO. Blessing or curse ?
I mean could go either way depending on what you want out of the car 😅
Smeedia not send a rod to the moon would be nice
i just got a 2018 sti 2 week ago and the car have factory warranty and unlimited lifetime warranty. and i just put a cobb SF+ AP on the car . do you think it void unlimited lifetime warranty? i buy the lifetime warranty for $2,500
You can get your money back for what you spent on the warranty at the dealer. Bht if you already flashed a map on the car then they will be able to tell and you've voided it. Most need to contribute the failure to thr mod but a retune will auto decline the car
Smeedia lets say my transmission need to be fix and i have Intake+ AP. you think they will fix it? bc intake and AP doesnt relate to transmission ?
They should, the AP shouldn't have any issued regarding what the trans is doing
Luckily I have an awesome dealership. I had to go to two different Subaru dealerships to find one that didn't blow. But the one I've been going to for 3 years does not give a crap about mods. The same Tech in the same service person I deal with said as long as I'm not using nitrous or a bigger turbo they don't care. They replace my throw out bearing because it's been revised three times already and Subaru for some reason cannot get that fixed under warranty three times. As well as my fork and a few other things from the transmission. And that's me having that tune accessport, exhaust group in Mount and a few other little goodies.
Touche got a chill dealership! 90% of them are super strict but you can find those that are cool with mods 🔥
Hi! Are those wheels works d9r and if so what specs are you running? Any spacers?
Yes that are and 18x9.5 +38bwith 13mm spacers in the front to clear the Brembos
