It is a refreshing change to see an owner actually enjoying his 'Roller' and sharing it with us. As most of us will never own one, it's good to see the reality of owning one. Also when you stand next to it Chris, it shows what behemoth it is.
Not interested in football what so ever, but the conversation you had with your friend was like watching Parkinson cross Wheeler dealer, i was totally engrossed, I really think you’re on to something here, 100% hooked, fantastic production, great content, please keep up the good work
Hi Chris here from Hampshire. I met John Aldridge when he was manager of Tranmere. They were playing Southampton in the Cup and his team trained at Fareham Town FC on the Friday. I was Chairman at the time . Mark Chamberlain our Team manager set up the deal. They trained in the rain and my groundsman was not impressed as we had a home game on the Saturday. They drew with Southampton on the Saturday. Great bloke. Great video. Thanks
This is a wonderful channel! I’ve only recently found it and poured through the earlier videos and wow! All my favourite things , classic cars, characterful people and football all wrapped up into a fantastically filmed and produced video. I watch everything on tv and TH-cam and this is now one of my favourites. congratulations Gary and keep up th quality content.👍👍👍
I literally stumbled across your channel, when you were chatting with Mr Tyrell, but now I’m hooked… beautifully filmed with interesting projects… bloomin’ brilliant ❤
Have owned both the XJS and XK8. Always felt the XJS was better built. The interior of our XK8 would literally fall apart in your hands after 100k miles. Do not miss that car at all. A well maintained XJS is a very unique experience.
Content is amazing and the production values are incredible. Please continue, I’m loving every minute and looking forward to next Sunday. Fan in the US, John
Came here for the cars, but also to see the conversation with Mr. Aldridge! Total legend here in Donostia and Real Sociedad. Great memories of the time he played along Richardson and Atkinson.
Hello from the US, being a total gear head I enjoy your program and using restraint when repairing and maintaining classic automobiles. The used but working ABS assembly and the double flared hard hydraulic line in place of the rubber banjo hose is what it takes with a lot less $. Good job.
Ah, the memories. I once had a 2002 XKR - it was my dream car, eer since it came out in 1996. It had it's foibles but I loved it and it made me smile eerytime I drove it. Even now, it is still a great looking car. I totally get when John Alridge is coming from. I'd still like to own an XJS at some point. Thanks for sharing.
Have just found your channel, Gary and am really enjoying the content! I’ve gone back to the very first video and working my way through them all. I really admire your attention to detail and your boundless patience, but that no doubt is fuelled by your obvious love for these old classics. I’ve watched the edition where you do the hood on the Rolls - amazing! Incredible and fastidious working-out of how the whole thing came together from the remnants of the old one. Tremendous! Good luck with the channel and keep the videos coming.
I’ve just found your channel and thoroughly enjoying it, never been a football fan myself (sorry) but watched the whole interview as you can’t beet a great friendship and that shone through👍🏻👍🏻
I liked the XJS, But as soon as it first came out I LOVED the XK. I Still think it looks better than the cars that have followed it. Really sweet lines, looks like it's moving, even when it's stood still. I read an article about how it was designed, and, just for once they consulted the production line workers about what might help THEM put it together. Simple things, a slight redesign of the boot space to allow somebody to get in it to fit things with out having to be a contortionist! It took HALF the man hours to build over the XJS.
brilliant, they are so good because it is your passion and your not trying to a You Tuber. You are just genuine in your passion and it comes across. Keep it up !
Gary what about fixing old fords in your content lotus cortina or a 3000 e capri your channel is great very relatable the way you do things I will keep watching you all the time thanks 👍
Another great video Gary. That replacement headliner is a great product. I like the old engines where you could see the components without all the modern plastic covers.
Fantastic Gary, as a fellow scouser living in Huyton, just got my Bmw 635csi back on the road after 6 years, If you see me around give us a thumbs up 👍🏻😀. Shame your a red nose 😀
Not a footy fan but i really enjoyed the Interview with Aldo. For me its hard to pick what Jag I prefer, if it was 1996 when the XK8 came out i would have said XK8 but now i really appreciate the XJS as its such a timeless design so both are my favourites. A excellent video as always Gary.
Hey Gary Lad ! Another great episode and love the journey of this XJS and loved the conversation with John. The headliner looks great and cant wait to get stuck into doing mine on the Daimler (albeit a little bit off piste using faux suede). I'm loving the way you are producing the videos with a simple commentary through each job and explaining how to work round not having some of the heavier duty tools. Keep up the great work lad and look forward to the next instalment :-) Cheers Stew
I have done lots of headliners in the XJS. For ease of repair you got me there with the new replacements but for sound deadening the original material wins hands down. I will keep re-upholstering the original headliners as the fiber glass replacements are almost impossible to get in the US. Sometimes I wish I was still living in the UK as XJS parts are so much cheaper and easier to get in the UK than in the US! P.S. My ex wife had a mad crush on you back in the day and watched every episode of Peak Practice! 😀
Gary, I do like the gentle music played in your videos. Unlike when I do mechanical DIY, all you can hear is grunting, effing and blinding! Keep up the good interesting work please. Just watching the one about a Jaguar XJS, and looking forward to getting mine soon.
I used to own a 1997 XK8. I did not like the styling; the XJ-S is iconic, the XK8 just can’t compare. Brilliant to drive!! Interior was amazing. It just never worked; every time I drove it something failed or broke. Sold it after 3 years. Only car more unreliable I’ve ever owned was a 1974 Jensen Healey. I had that for 12 years and finally lost it to rust
Hello Gary, love your channel and I am amazed at your very intuitive mechanical abilities (unless of course you have Ed China on the payroll….!). Anyway, met a 90 year old fella from Calderstones recently who restored an E-type convertible and Triumph stag by himself, and won awards. Turns out he’s Herbert’s brother and I wondered if we could facilitate a meeting between the two of you. Let me know, now crack on and get stuck in la…
In to your response on Trevor Francis, as I said 1st million pound footballer. He got paid that sum of money to join Nottingham Forest FC, under the managerial guide of Brian Clough and was shown to the press on the 9th Feb 1979. His nickname at BCFC was 'Ol' big 'ead'. Hope this trips the ol' blamange into remembering it as a few papers said it was too much for a player. Loving the series, doing any Italian sports cars in the future. You were my late mother's crush in your medical drama Peak Practice, she never missed a program. Take care and be safe out there under the cars. 😀 _=|
🙂 Another interesting video. I myself looked at buying one of these modern classic vehicles, afew years ago. But every example I viewed, had been both abused and neglected sadly 😥. So I ended up purchasing a 1995 Bentley Brooklands, in immaculate condition instead from a classic car 🚗 collector. It runs beautifully.....
Hello Gary. New subscriber here. That was a great episode ! I remember watching that IRL vs MEX game at the time. What a goal ! A friend had an XK8 when I worked in northern Italy for a time. We would drive to the next big town on Sunday evenings to watch volleyball, that was one of the popular sports in the region ( along with water polo : random ! ). Good memories !
In some ways the XJS based Aston Martin DB7 is more closely related to the XJS than the XK8, being available with a "proper" Jaguar engine in the form of the supercharged AJ6. It was in 1989 that Ford bought Jaguar and the V8 of the XK8 is built by a Jaguar plant within Ford's Bridgend plant.
The xk8 is a proper jaguar engine, british designed with nothing in common with the fird v8s.people seem to think jaguar just took a ford v8,they didnt.
I have that petrol smell in the boot, and I can't get rid of it no matter what I do, new filter, fuel hoses and so on. I think I'll have to pull the tank in the winter and have it tested. I've just found the overflow bottle for the rad as well. Mine was disconnected for some reason, getting at it was one of those occasions were you would have liked to have wrung the car designers neck!! Cheers from Wallasey.
Hey John, fuel smell in the XJS boot is a common problem. The tank sits on a thick rubber mat, condensation from the air in the boot forms between the cold fuel tank and the mat and eventually rots it into pinholes, the fuel then soaks into the rubber so the smell lingers. Good luck removing the tank you’ll find it’s a very tight fit. Whilst you’re at it remove the “swirl pot” that the tank feeds into ( below the battery), you’ll probably find it full of particles of rust which leads to another XJS complaint, grinding unexpectedly to a halt due to fuel starvation. The rusty gunge blocks the very fine filter in the pot and you stop. When the engine stops drawing fuel it falls away and you go again and so on and so on…..a good clean out should cure it, for a while. Good luck! TonyS
John has saloon plastic cam covers fitted , the upright "Jaguar" script are off the x300 V8 saloon , the correct xk8 covers should have the sloping script - there are 3 variants- Upright , sloping and Daimler. like John i was a toolmaker and made the tooling for these covers. Ps does he know the xk8 dash design is based on the inverted shape of the Spitfire wing. Great videos Gary , very enjoyable to watch, thanks.
There was ABSOLUTELY NO WAY you could repair that headliner, one of the common problems on classics is RUST, it NEVER sleeps!! As good as the XJS V12 is, they are COMPLEX to work on, i prefer the shape of early E types.
Hello Gary Great channel and as an avid Jag man I love the XJS sessions - lovely car. My xk8 is being restored at the mo - almost done - and it was great to hear John say he’d never sell his. Me either. I wonder if you could let me know what size and manufacturer the wheels are are on your XJS please. Keep up the good stuff - ATB - Ian
nice little video. yep, every jag i ever owned needed the headlining sorting, not so easy if you have a sunroof. nice xjs, you seem to have covered many of the same jobs as myself. that spray heat resistant glue by the way isn't all it's cracked up to be,
Another great one Gary, thank you so much, I’m really enjoying each episode. That old headliner looked like you were in a Bedouin tent!😄 with the XK8 Gary, you mention it looks like an Aston Martin, am I right in thinking the DB7 shared the same platform as the XK8?
@@classic.obsession thanks Gary, I thought it was so. And of course, the link with your XJS is that it was developed from that platform so unbroken lineage which is always nice. When I lived in British Columbia I had a friend who is also an actor and she had the convertible version in dark green. I went for many a ride in that one, your right, it was a softer ride and I loved the dash on it. There is a chap where I live now, just outside of Vienna who has the coupe in silver but I much prefer this gold colour, it really shows off the lines well.
Still can't understand why people would go for a V12 auto when the 3.6 manual is such a driver's car - I guess unless you sit on motorways all day long?
Styling wise definitely but I run an xk8 out in La and have to say the suspension is so much softer and smoother. I think if this was incorporated into the XJS you would have the perfect car…if the mpg was better!! Regards.

This channel is pure quality.
Thank You for the Channel.....GREAT JOB!
Love the football banter with John. Both Jags look stunning BTW,
Should never have got rid of Aldo he still had at least three good years at the top level left in him a true legend

Fabulous episode. We would vote for the XJS every time. 🙂🙂. K&D.
14:14 Gosh that XJS looks beautiful. Love the poise and the style of the XJS. And the XJS sits so low.

Crikey it was bonkers to come across this... Everyone loved Beardsley and Barnes. The XJS and the XK8.. Or is it the other way round?
The best show of its type on TH-cam
Another really enjoyable video. Thanks Gary.
Great Video Gary, great content and entertaining
Great episode. Nice interview with John Aldridge.....great channel ...you should have a tv series ...on cars and famous faces ..
Great video even as a Utd fan! What an era Aldridge played in.

could watch Aldo n Mavers on the box as much as possible!! (from a wolves fan) xoxo
Really enjoying these videos.
Great, fab ,envoy , only a few words out of hundreds I could use well done 👍
Top two of my wish list what a coincidence
I remember the goal, I think it was critical for ROI to qualify for the last 16...

Your accent is more scouse when with John Aldridge 🤣
Jaguar in the 70s:
Where shall we put the fuel filter?
Chuck in in the boot somewhere, it's fine.
I love this channel.

I think that Aldo’s 80s Scouser ‘tache was one of the reasons that Liverpool signed him as Rush’s replacement….
It was like Samsons hair….you Daren’t cut it off !!
Just found your channel and have subscribed. Fantastic content, I could watch these all day!
another great video. so relaxing. thanks so much
Hello Gary

Hi Ian 24cm wide. ‘Fondmetal’ limits your turning lock a little being so wide but look great I think. Regards.
I cringed when I saw you go under car without support from jack stands ,, I enjoy your videos , thanks
I agree, I've known seal's, to fail on hydraulic Jack's!
It's tv
😂😂😂😂😅😮😅😅😢
nice little video. yep, every jag i ever owned needed the headlining sorting, not so easy if you have a sunroof. nice xjs, you seem to have covered many of the same jobs as myself. that spray heat resistant glue by the way isn't all it's cracked up to be,
Use spray trim fix adhesive. You won’t have any problems. Thanks for watching.

use a small paint roller to smooth out the bubbles
You don't need a leaver on the ARB if you undo both sides at the same time.
That drop link should NOT be scalloped. It has work against the rollbar or the bottom mount. They should have been replaced.
Have an '86 xjs with drooping head lining .. unfortunately has electric sunroof so no upholster seems willing etc.
Have a look online for a replacement. You may be lucky. Regards
This was good
I assume that you started the vehicle, and checked fuel filter, before replacing the spare wheel?
I show replacing the fuel filter during one of the 3 episodes. Regards.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I'm not a football fan so have to say this episode went way off track for me.
Links to replacement parts?
Still can't understand why people would go for a V12 auto when the 3.6 manual is such a driver's car - I guess unless you sit on motorways all day long?
I prefer the XJ-S looks.
we love you sir can we see a bit more of the rolls some time please i buy the beers and p s your a cleaver git thanks for getting stuck in sir
give me the XJS every day
Styling wise definitely but I run an xk8 out in La and have to say the suspension is so much softer and smoother. I think if this was incorporated into the XJS you would have the perfect car…if the mpg was better!! Regards.
🤘😎🤘🇬🇧
Lovely car, but I'd never crawl under one that was only supported by a hydraulic jack - that's what jack stands are for.
Hi Daniel I’m always safe and Jack stands are always used just not in shot. Regards.
Great channel. Need to lose the annoying background music. Everything else is great.
The XK8 is better. You're welcome.
ruin it putting a big us motor then i saw it’s a uk you tube keep it original good content
