It's like me saying that a bad experience I had in high school resulted in a girl ending herself from the mere thought of me "getting away" with "sleeping with her boyfriend" when in all actuality, I was blamed for that, but the "evidence" lead nowhere, the girl believed me, and we all just drifted apart.
Ya know what? I think Shane might have stumbled into something decent with that last joke. After the heartfelt scene, the last joke with the audience laughter feels painful. And it puts the other jokes into perspective-if someone laughed at those previously, then encountered the heartfelt scene, it might be harder for them to laugh at the last one because they have new context and can see how cruel it is. Was it executed well? Definitely not, but the over-the-top laughter at the end feels intentional to me.
