What I can't stand with Shane, and has always rubbed me the wrong way is him constantly bringing up how poor he is... He brings up being in a bad financial situation but the fact he made upwards of 20 million from ONE makeup launch and has been on TH-cam for 15 years and wants sympathy from his audience who have average paying 9 to 5 jobs is almost insulting. Love your content and the side eye you give the iPad when things aren't adding up, much love from Utahhhhh

I dont care about his trauma, stopped once he started to victimize others. I’ll never forget him asking a child to twerk for him. Joke or not that was a real child and he was grown. Im sick of trauma being used as a shield to accountability, most people have trauma, if everyone uses that as an excuse there would never ever be justice or consequences. He should have stayed gone.
Also, shane in my opinion is one of the most manipulative people on this platform, i wouldnt ever fully trust the things he says. He got his career through manipulating people into thinking he was the sweetest guy alive, he’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

    - Shane got cancelled during his engagemen

As some one who grew up in the same environment he described ( Dark humor and childhood trauma) I have opinions:
I’m raised in a culture where dark jokes are norm. I remembered the jokes my friends say and at the time I didn’t think much of it and now we say shit that was pretty dark, and we were ashamed of ourselves. The problem with Shane is he kept those jokes up for too long. It’s his go to jokes. He kept it going. He didn’t stop until the hate was too much that he was forced to. They were the lowest darkest jokes you can think of, but he didn’t think that. If at one point he thought it was wrong, he would’ve deleted it before anyone told him to. But he didn’t. He only did when people boycotted him. I’m pretty sure he thinks some of those jokes are still funny because that mentality is rooted inside him. It’s obvious he needs a lot of help. I’m not sure how it works but I hope he pays a great deal for therapy because something rooted in childhood is hard to change.
Also most people with childhood trauma learn pretty quickly what’s wrong and right. He’s not a hermit, he’s not stuck in his childhood bubble. He’s been out in society and in the internet long enough to be educated. Surely he has at least one friend who questioned him…If not, he should question his friend group. Let’s stop this misconception that people with childhood trauma can be a piece of shit.

Don’t feel ashamed. You didn’t know any better because you were a child. It wasn’t like nowadays where kids have a better understanding thanks to the media. I was in your shoes once too. I used to love Shane and once considered him my favorite TH-camr. He’s the grown ass adult who’s at blame, not us. Now, if you were continuing to defend him, it would be one thing. However, we grew up and realized that what he did wasn’t ok. When the first racism scandal came out, I didn’t excuse his behavior in the slightest. However, I decided to give him another chance because he seemed like he changed. Then come to find out that was just the tip of the iceberg. It’s so sick to me how so many of us were dare I say… manipulated? He knew how to play the game. It still makes my stomach turn knowing that as a kid, I used to laugh at his pedophilic “humor” because I (like so many others) thought it was normal. I forgot about the comments he made towards his fans and Willow Smith. When I saw the videos again, the only thing I could think of was “Dear God, if so many kids thought this behavior was normal, imagine how many kids were tricked into dangerous situations.” Then I saw the video of him kissing an underage fan… I was even more disgusted. I know it’s not my fault because I was a young teenager, but I still feel so guilty for actually giving this man money to pay his bills every time I watched a video.

It only became a problem when he befriended Jeffree Star. It’s about jealousy. Before that, honestly people didn’t care at all. It’s easy to throw rocks on Shane, but people (his audience) must be held accountable as part of the problem either. You blame Shane, but he never forced you to watch his old videos. For me, Shane is the one I knew when he did Jeffree’s docuseries and the palettes. I won’t dig up whatever he did before that, ten years ago or more. "I'm an empath and I have trauma, so let say the "n" word and talk inappropriately about my cat. Remember, I have _trauma_ so you can't be mad at me." - Shane, probably.
I have PTSD, I understand that trauma can miss with someone. It can affect their sense of humour as a coping mechanism, it can cause hypersexuality or asexuality. (Not saying that everyone asexual has PTSD, juts saying it _can_ be a result.) Trauma can make you lash out at the people you love and strangers.
_But_ guess what, Shane??? *You* are still in control of *your* words and *your* actions. Trauma does not excuse anything, even if it does explain it. There's a difference, and that's accountability.

I started watching Shane around 2015, probably at the worst of my anxiety and depression- and that was why he resonated with me, the self-deprecation and talks about his mental health. For being on youtube since maybe 2012, I knew that he was one of the originals, but I never looked or watched his videos cause yeah it was dark and not for me. Not that the content that I was subscribed to was great or clean by any means, but I think because of where I was mentally I was okay with it? Since I've been stable for almost 3 years, there is that soft spot where I do feel for him when it comes to his trauma and whatever, but at the same time, we as humans can only use that as an excuse for so long.
Like I am not saying that poeple can't use that as an excuse, cause I only know my experience, but I was very anxious and depressed because of my own doing and how I felt towards myself for a point in time. Shane obviously has a dark history and trauma, and yeah that's sad, BUT he made this racist, bigoted, homophobic, antisemitic, etc content for YEARS, and only brought it up when he was "cancelled"...I still hate that term cause when people are being held accountable, they use the term cancelled and it's like "oh the internet hates me agina" like no, you are in an era where people want to know who they are taking their time to watch and listen to.

I knew some of it was wrong, but I thought edgy humor was just that, humor. However, I’ve learned and grown since then but I have to remember that I was and am part of the problem. I continued to watch him when he grew into the 20 million views per video Shane and kind of forgot about those videos he used to create. When it all came back into the light, i had to take a long hard look into the mirror and unpack what it means to take accountability. A lot of people mainly just wanted him to address everything and fucking apologize and own up to his shitty behavior. It was basic responsibility. Do that and then maybe people would have believed you'd matured in the past 10 years. But he didn't. And that's why the situation kept getting more intense. Ooof. Where to even start? I will begin by saying I still strongly believe Shane does not deserve to have a platform at all. I obviously wish him the best of luck in his personal life, and I don't want him feeling the need to take his own life, and I feel like finally leaving the internet for good would be a good way of atoning AND better for his overall mental health. Let's not forget he probably still has enough money to basically retire and live comfortably for a long time. It is time to finally step aside and let new creators be at the forefront.
I'll say that this podcast seems like a step in the right direction, but too little, WAY TOO late 😑 . And what bothers me is that despite the fact that he says he is glad he was cancelled, he did SO much to cover things up by deleting hundreds of videos off his channels and basically scrubbing his entire old podcast off the internet. And why is he only speaking about this on someone else's platform instead of bringing it up on his own new podcast or as a topic for his own video 🤔 ? Obviously he is afraid to call too much attention to his own actions because that will only lead to ANOTHER cancellation 🙄 ...
I could go on and on, but Shane needs to move on already. I believe he does deserve a happy and fulfilling life, but he doesn't need TH-cam or the internet for that.

As someone who was growing up on the internet back when the humor Shane is referring to was "funny". One thing I don't see people talk about tho is big channels like SMOSH legit made the same kind of jokes and those guys are still around too. Thinking back on that time, I didn't understand the context of the jokes and their harm, but I genuinely as a middle schooler was laughing and watching those videos at the time because it's what friends told me to watch or it's what was popular. I was willingly and eagerly taking in that entertainment at the time. Thinking back I do not think it's funny now at all and I see how wrong the jokes were now but was to young to know context at the time as a LITERAL CHILD.
I will admit, tho channels like Shane and smosh had me thinking taboo stuff = peak humor. Because during early internet that's legit how people acted was like humor was 90% shock factor. It was like a competition to who could say the most fucked up shit even arbitrarily. Makes you think about how much that influences kids. (This was also around the same time that boys in school would joke about playing the fire truck game on your leg... look it up if you don't know) 😬

THIS. I almost never see people say what you’ve said, even tho you’re 100% right. I also grew up watching Shane, my friends told me to watch him and I 100% feel like all of us kids were groomed. Taught to think of horrible issues like r*pe and p***philia as jokes. It distanced me from the actual topics I was joking about, topics I didn’t even fully understand, because the only time I ever heard about these hard issues was when TH-camrs or me and my friends made fun of them. I hate how these commentary channels never really fully empathize with the young viewers who were subjected to this content. I’ve spent years and years unlearning and relearning so much, and while I don’t need any validation for that, I would prefer a more objective viewpoint when these commenters talk about Shane’s viewers.

Although I mostly agree and I’m not trying to argue but rather point something out is that,
one thing that sticks with me is the fact he used to be very inappropriate to minors and even gave his chewed up gum from his mouth to a minors mouth when he was in his 20s or the ‘joke’ he made about willing to do wills smith kid when she was like 9 years old or when he would tell underage girls to twerk online when chatting with them etc will always stick with me. I can understand the other shit thing he did but those will always make me question him because I don’t know why he thought it was okay to do or say back then. Yes it was a different time period back then but it’s still just… so questionable.
But he is going to therapy now so maybe he’s learning and growing and won’t be gross like that again. I don’t know but I just hope he’s not like that anymore, but what I’m worried about it is that he could still be like that off camera and we wouldn’t know. Like hides it or something? But I am glad he’s taking ownership of what he’s mainly said and did.
But Personally I don’t think he’s the worst person out there. Definitely not the best but not the worst either.

Also, as much as I don't like TP, it takes a very specific sort of person to pretend to be great friends with someone to their face and then bad mouth them constantly behind their back to anyone who will listen; even if you are speaking truthfully about the person to others...stop being phony to their face...it's weird and it also encourages their shitty behaviour.

I don't feel bad for Shane and I don't think he deserves any praise. Imo he is basically STILL just crying that his very bad jokes (that he doubled down on defending for so long) had finally come to bite him in the ass.
He said horrible things about women, Jewish people, people of color, children, animals, ect because of... Trauma...?
I know we all go through trauma differently, but there comes to a point where you know you are hurting others, and you need to break the cycle. You can have trauma and still be a bad person, just because you went through hardships doesn't mean those hardships made you a good person.
Shane is Bi(last time I heard he came out as bi so sorry if that's no longer true. I know people can further develop their preferences as they learn about themselves) so I can understand how maybe he was struggling with that and made some uncouth jokes about sexuality, but you'd think if he really felt bad about perpetuating these bad stereotypes about the people he was making jokes about he would talk about it more, not be quiet to save his own ass/money. It's a great talking point on how minorities can still discriminate against their own community because they are stressed about fitting in with rich, straight, cis, white, men. (Think when Blair White knowingly and blatantly lied about Janae Kroc to fit her narrative of "Trans people bad, but I'm not like other trans girls 🤪".) It's June and a good time to talk about that sort of thing! But he wants to talk about how he was sad that is very hurtful jokes made people hate him...
Did he say those hurtful things because he got views and those views got him money, or did he say them to cope with trauma? And is he apologizing now because it might get him more money, or is he doing it because he feels bad and wants to fix the harm he has caused? And is he being so nondescript because it's all bs to get more money, or is he doing it because it's still too sensitive to talk about on video? I don't really think he said much more now than he has been. The only new thing is that he finally admitted that there are not 2 Shane's, the good Shane that he is now and one that's bad from forever ago; there is one Shane and that Shane mad lots of fuckie wuckies. Fuckie wuckies that I believe he COULD atone for if he wanted to.
I won't believe Shane is a good person until he continually does the right thing for an extended period of time. I know it isn't fair, but the more mistakes you make, the harder it is for people to believe or trust you. That's just life unfortunately. It's how people keep themselves safe from other people who might not have their best interest in mind.
Also weird he didn't mention him chatting sexually on Omegle with his underage fans... Or was that lumped in with 'its just a joke', and we shouldn't take it too seriously?

And then seeing all of the old content come out the woodwork which I vaguely remembered watching as a kid, it was not surprising see what was being revealed because he was always odd to me and you’re right about them his controversial content bought him his whole career basically end that can’t really be forgiven and he’s going to live with that and those actions surrounding his name for the rest of his life. And it’s funny when you say that him making it an excuse that “he was young” or “it was a different audience at the time” not being a valid excuse because whatever excuse his saying, he was a grown person grown enough to make his own decisions he knew what he was doing.
He was at least 18+ making this content it was his personality. he had no idea of the implications and the consequences of everything he did and that’s a disaster he made for himself and it will affect him in his career for a very very long time😬

Most of his career was built on racist content, “jokes” about mental issues/handicapped people, “jokes”about sexual assault, “jokes” about children, etc. When I was 12 to 14 from 2008 to 2010, I thought some of his jokes were normal to make (I was not aware of the blackface content at the time but I knew who Shanaynay was and I remember not being critical of his jokes mimicking Helen Keller). There is so much content that he influenced on children’s humor and when another TH-camr who I watched, chescaleigh called him out for his racist content around 2014, he bullied her with Trisha and kept making the racist content. I genuinely hope that he is actually improving for the better now but after he repeatedly bullied chescaleigh, I stopped supporting him back then and even more so now that the stuff came out about the pet jokes and his jokes with minors.

I'm surprised he didn't get more hate back in the day.. 🤔 If he was suicidal I feel bad for him. How do u deal with that? More importantly, how does a therapist even give u the tools to come back from that? It's definitely interesting

I don’t think he’s actually suicidal though. If he is then I really hope he gets the help he needs, but Shane has done this his entire career. Whenever he starts to get the tiniest bit of criticism he tries to deflect by talking about suicide. It’s a classic manipulation tactic

Not defending him at all but I do sympathize. He spent 10-15 years making the same jokes and people watched and enjoyed it. I think its interesting to see how people get soo consumed by the internet feedback. To feel that love and validation for so long snd it all turn on a dime has got to throw your head through a loop

Do you not know Shane abused kids too? That shit was never even LEGAL, let alone acceptable. Kids being too young to know any better is no excuse for a grown man preying on them for over a decade

i hate the fact that i’ve literally grown up watching him & had to unlearn so many things that he taught me on youtube cause i was so young i had no idea it was wrong & i thought it was so crazy that it was funny. then again, i was literally 9-10 years old when i first discovered him on youtube (in the early early sketch days, within the first year or two of him making content). I forgot about so many things he would upload and started watching him again when he made content with his gf at the time, Lisa. half of the jokes he made went over my head bc i was still so young. I watched him all the way up until i was around 16 because that’s all i really knew & i loved when he made those huge cakes out of random weird foods. I stopped watching him for a while again until he started conspiracy theory videos & “documentaries”. When he got cancelled and everything was brought to light, being more educated now & understanding the things he did. it really just breaks my heart for my young self because i wish i could’ve known better & been more protected over these things i was seeing on the internet. I’ve grown a lot but i used to just not understand the way things worked & what wasn’t okay. I’m happy that this “cancel culture” is a huge thing now for the future generations & their way of navigating the internet. being able to know who is safe for your children to watch & what shows are good for them is extremely important. i’ve been absolutely traumatized by some things i’ve seen on the internet because my parents had no idea how to control it. Sorry for the rant bestie 😩😩😩

I almost wonder if he made the apology video specifically to draw people to his channel. As he said people would wonder WHY he's apologizing. That would have generated traffic to his content and money $$. I'd be curious about what his analytics looked like back then. Around the time he posted the apology vid. I bet he was getting crickets.. loaing fundsss so he went for it.
I know he literally says that is why his, "friends", DIDN'T want him to do a video... However..I believe he said that to try and make others believe what he is apologizing for isn't that bad.. again generating people who don't know him or why he's apologizing to his content.
I think his friends are probably his own soul. I hear him. I don't believe him. I feel he is an opportunist. Imo: He is taking this podcast as an opportunity to try and flip the narrative to a new audience.
He is actively telling us the content he created was because it was "oKaY bAcK tHeN". But then says he doesn't know why he created it.. It generated views and money. And I think he loved it. He joined the beauty community because he saw Jeffrey's lifestyle/ the OPPORTUNITY to create it for himself...
When it comes to Shane I believe this is business. His moral compass is broken. And it is what it is for him. I am happy he sort of spoke out. But it has taken him a long time. I wouldn't be surprised if he strategically waited until now. Gathering his viewers thoughts/hopes for him to find out how to address this. He likely collected answers on how to approqch this feom then until now and is doing what everyonesaid they hoped he would do. He made a like what not to do checklist I imagine. Then he could mirror what people had hoped of him. 🕯🤍

Trauma doesn't excuse behavior. You cannot expect that, upon repeatedly hurting someone/displaying poor behavior, people will stick around when they realize you don't learn. I think lots of people have done things in their past they regret; even if they aren't to the level of Shane, we all have to take responsibility. We may have learned and made better, more educated choices now, but that's on us to do. Shane cannot repeatedly make mistakes, blame trauma, and expect people to come back if he refuses to actually address the problem within himself. I think he's a manipulator.

I started watching Shane Dawson in 2009. I didn’t watch all his videos, but had some of his videos I would rewatch over and over again (not the ones he got cancelled for). Watching him since I was 12/13 years old, I may be a little bias because part of me will always have a soft spot for him.. I was so heart broken when I saw the things he has said and done while he was getting cancelled. I couldn’t believe it. Im happy he is finally talking about it. I sympathize that he felt so depressed. But I’m glad he can see that he needs to accept that some people will never forgive him, and rightfully so. He will always have backlash for the things that he did, and he did that to himself. All he can do is push to do better, acknowledge all his mistakes, and accept that people don’t have to forgive or like him after what he has done.

I don't think he can be genuinly honest. I feel he's so wrapped in self loathing and self pity and urge to appeal to literally everyone, that he doesn't fully exist as a personality
