I was just watching reruns of Johnny Carson and saw John Candy and Maureen O'Hara on his show. Referring to only the lonely so I watched this clip and now I am excited to watch the entire movie.
This was such a good movie. I loved when john candy character stood up to his brother who tried to get him not to marry Teresa bc he liked the mom never bugged him only Danny. I loved when danny said I have a right to be happy too! This was a little gem from the 90s.
1:38 - the famous Maureen O’Hara left eyebrow raise. Everybody who worked with her in Hollywood said that if her left eyebrow went up, you were in for it, lol.
@@joshbusfieldakabitterphase2478 born in 84... either way sounds like a good one. Always nice to find a movie with actors you like, and it's completely unknown to you.
@@joshbusfieldakabitterphase2478 I guess so. I grew up in the 50s and 60s, and had never heard of it, until I saw the video, just a few minutes ago, of John and Ms. O'Hara on the tonight show, Johnny Carson.
The Great Outdoors and Uncle Buck are two great movies. This is one movie I have always thought to be extremely underrated. The cast for this film was absolutely perfect.
@@kathconserv it’s not on any streaming sites, it’s never played on tv. They literally play the great outdoors year around I’ve seen the great outdoors on Sundance tv and amc pop up like 10 plus times just this year and recently. Among other candy films they play on tv like uncle buck that was just on like a week or so ago on amc. Hence this movie is underrated. And they’re about to Start playing planes trains and automobiles. And just to double check I googled “the great outdoors movie” and it’s playing three times this month on amc lol so yeah “only the lonely is underrated cause it’s a solid candy flick.
If only someone had the clip where Danny calls Rose on telling it like it is to not just Theresa, but Aunt Dolly, Cousin Jerry, and last, but not least, Dad.😯

This is the only movie that I know of that the late John Hughes was involved with that he didn't write, or wasn't credited as one of the writers. He produced the movie, but the director Chris Columbus is the only one credited on the script. There have been a few movies where John was credited as Edmond Dantes, but this is the only one that he either didn't write or wasn't credited at all.
You really have to feel sorry for Candy and his character between his set in her ways stereotypical Irish mother and his gf who works with dead bodies that say nothing and she gets little communication with the outside world. It was clear that the two of them would need a while to get comfortable with each other.
I'd love to see this get a little revival. Hopefully some creators cover this and bring it back- so many hard, relatable, and heartwarming moments! Really has a range, and wonderful cast.
I felt so bad for Theresa. So it’s ok for Danny and his mother to order a drink, but when Theresa does it too, she’s an “alcoholic” all of a sudden? Smh
Ally Sheedy looked nervous because Maureen O' Hara was making fun of her. That's not nice and I felt bad for her cuz she is my fav actress and character from this movie. She looks like a princess,I love her and she is so pretty and cute. She gives me vibes of Princess Diana.
Sometimes I think that the sharpest and most cutting sword in the world is precisely female irony, when a woman deliberately shows herself hostile towards another woman and aims to make her uncomfortable at any price ...
I loved this movie, but Danny was wrong for not checking his mom from the get go. A grown man has to put his foot down when it comes to his woman. Theresa handled herself very well in this scene, but had to fend for herself alone. Danny should had told his mom to stop saying anything negative. At least let Theresa know he has her back
what a disaster i would of left her at home shes like a three year old that cant behave in public and had some time with the girl instead a night alone together and leave the conniving mother home🤦 she made a mess of their dinner plans this lady👎
i did not like the mother in this his brother is arrogant and even his cop buddy was obsessed about sex good lord what a mess but im glad he realized that he cut them off for good he wanted his real life back and the girl that meant most to him👍
Whose idea was this? This film must have made 6 cents at the box office -- if they had any stones they would have allowed John to play a womanizing, heavy drinking, wild partying guy whose style is cramped when his pain in the ass mother moves in with him - and instead of flat chested Ally Sheedy they cast big breasted hot young women as John's conquests - now that film I would have paid to see and so would a lot of the John Candy fans who passed on this Hallmark Channel drivel
R.I.P. John Candy and Maureen O'Hara. You are both missed.
The writer is great! The delivery, especially Maureen O’Hara, obnoxiously perfect. Great movie!
This scene made me so uncomfortable, yet I laughed so hard at the same time.

I watched several John Candy movies, but never this one in its entirety.
It's hard to believe he's been gone some 30 years now.
thats literally what i just did before watching this and commenting lol

This scene is so powerful! Ally Sheedy was terrific in this, too! Great movie.
Excellent movie. Planes Trains and Auto Mobiles, Uncle Buck, and Only The Lonely are Imo John Candy's best films.
Stripes would be another.
…and The Great Outdoors!
@@Dan-lr4hmI like that one too, but if im asked his best, I'd name the 3 I did, wirh Planes Trains and Autonobiles as #1

That was my mother. once that eyebrow raised you were toast.
I love the scene afterward where Danny has it out with his mom after ruining the dinner. He showed he had the gift for drama with that scene.
OMG!!!!! Where has this movie been in my life?!?!?
Really a great romantic comedy, remember seeing it and getting it even as a kid...
Maureen had the range

Maureen O'Hara's character here always reminded me of my mother-in-law.

Nothing wrong with being polish. Some people are just a mean and nasty person like her. No people skills whatsoever.
Ally Sheedy gave a great performance against Candy and Ohara lots of chemistry.
Underrated

While this was being filmed in Chicago, I heard an announcement on radio that they needed extras for 'a restaurant scene.' Ah, I coulda been a star...
I felt so bad for Theresa. So it’s ok for Danny and his mother to order a drink, but when Theresa does it too, she’s an “alcoholic” all of a sudden? Smh

I have everything Danny's ordering. Sounds delicious.
Furthermore, could they make it more obvious that his mother is astounded by the prices?

At least Teresa was smart enough to walk away unlike the women who stay with a bully of a mother-in-law.
This movie is not even available for purchase for streaming!
It's expensive on dvd for some reason and not on bluray. I had to buy a vhs copy. -_-
The acting was so good here that I was uncomfortable the entire time.
