I agree with you. So sad that we lost him so early, but in reading about him I find that he did not live a happy life. His father passed at 35 from a heart condition that weighed heavily on his mind. And, no pun intended, he battled weight issues as well as with alcohol and cocaine. And suffered from depression. It's totally at odds with his screen image.

Watching 'Only the Lonely' is one of my favorites. Maureen O'Hara and John Candy had great chemistry. My mom loved her in all of her movies. The Quiet Man, my mom's favorite. Hearing Ms. O'Hara talking about John Candy talent was wonderful.

A really charming story that I never forgot. It shows you that Candy's comedy was only surpassed by his class.
John Candy had a plethora of humility and always was a giver. Yes he passed away too soon but God did he leave us in stitches with his numerous movies.
Candy gave O'Hara his own trailer and the producers were embarrassed that their star (Candy) was in the small trailer, so they got another big one for him.
I remember when I watched "Only the Lonely" for the first time a few years ago, I totally believed that John Candy was Maureen O'Hara's son. What a brilliant series of performances, including that of the great Anthony Quinn. On a side note, I am 30 years old (yes, born after this Tonight Show episode was recorded), and I have had a major crush on Maureen O'Hara since I first saw her in "The Quiet Man" when I was about 12. That scene in the cemetery just blew me away. A few years later, I wrote her a letter, and she very kindly sent me back an autographed index card, inscribed to me. I treasure it amongst my prized possessions. She was a brilliant, wonderful lady and a tremendous actress.
Maureen made five films directed by John Ford, "The Quiet Man" arguably the most famous. Recommended: Maureen's autobiography 'Tis Herself. There's a shocker in it, but I can't say what it is. I haven't watched anything late night since Johnny Carson retired, and I'm not the only one. Which is a shame, because I've always been a night owl.

From SCTV to a host of comedy classics, John really was something special. So talented, so warm and sooo funny. All these years later, I still miss the guy.
I ran into John Candy in the Edmonton airport back in the 80's along with Joe Flaherty. It was close to midnight and they had spent the week filming SCTV. They were nice, gracious and friendly even though it was obvious they were spent from the week's work. Truly classy people.
I hadn’t seen this clip before. It was sad when Ms. O’Hara said, “One day soon, John will be doing all the great dramatic roles typical of the great Charles Laughton.” He passed away not too many years later, a tragic loss.
This was great! Three of my all time favorites in one room. The conversation sounds like real people talking. Ally Sheedy was wonderful in this movie too!!!!
I remember going to the theater when their movie came out and I HAD to see it! Not only for John Candy whom I loved but for Maureen O'hara whom I adored as I had seen so many of her movies. I remember thinking, as many people did at the time, how great it was that she agreed to come out of retirement to do this movie with John. They are both truly missed❤
I’ve never seen ‘Only The Lonely,’ but I must seek it out. Two of my favourite actors. I, like Johnny it seems, was in love with Maureen O’Hara when I first saw her on screen as a teenager.
Maureen, such a treasure. Her many performances are a gift to us all. John, so talented and funny, left us too soon. His memory will go on for generations to come.

I remember Maureen O’Hara’s movies. They were amazing. She was always elegant and classy. Then there is John Candy I loved his under rated Uncle Buck, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles broke my heart
So much to talk about in this clip. I will choose one to say that Carson does not need to steal the show from his guests like the unwatchable garbage that are late shows today. He gave his guests the limellight and was incredibly respectful.
She played John Candy's mom in the movie and is very protective over him like a mom in this interview 😀. That was a good movie, the side story with Maureen and Anthony Quinn is worth seeing on its own.
As a kid I was absolutely in love with Maureen O'Hara. To this day I still think she's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen. Please don't tell my wife.
it's very possible she may even be a distant relative of mine, O'Hara is a common name amongst my people, we both grew up Catholic and our origins are from Ireland, I wish I had a way to verify it for a fact but all I know is she checks all the boxes from what I can tell. amazing if she was indeed one of my people lol
@@jimmyc1518 It's very easy to tell who your distant relatives are if you're Irish. It's a very small country and all our surnames can be traced back to specific counties. For example, my last name is Farrell. The name originated in County Longford. I share a distant relation with actor Colin Farrell. My sister visited County Longford and the name is everywhere, from Farrell's hardware store, Farrell's Pub, Farrell's construction company, you name it. It's not only the most common name in the county, but my own grandfather told us himself where he's from. Funnily enough, even though O'Hara isn't actually Maureen's real surname, look up famous actress Catherine O'Hara. Catherine and John Candy were fellow actors and friends in the famous Canadian comedy group called SCTV in the early eighties. Catherine and John go way back together. So, do a little research on the internet. You can easily find the exact place where your ancestors are from. And the more you find out, the more you'll feel you owe it not only to yourself, but to them as well. It's important. Cheers.
Too late, Michael. Sorry to break it to you like this, but I have it on good authority your wife has contacted a divorce lawyer. And to make matters worse, she hasn't hired just any divorce lawyer, but famed, high powered, celebrity divorce lawyer Gloria Allred. And even worse than that, Gloria is now in touch with the networks and it looks like your divorce will be broadcast on national television. Again, Im very sorry.
Without a doubt, Maureen O’Hara was the most beautiful woman in the world when she appeared in “How Green Was My Valley.” The trick with the veil that was devised by John Ford in the scene as she was leaving the church after her character’s wedding was a masterpiece.
I was on the Turner Classic Movies cruise in 2013 and HGWMV was introduced by the late, great Jeopardy ! gameshow host, Alex Trebek. I had never seen the movie before. Alex said it was among his top 3-4 movie favorites; and it certainly became one of mine after seeing the stunning Maureen O'Hara in it !
@@ericthered760 John Ford tried to recreate the magic with “The Quiet Man”, but he couldn’t get the financing before WW2 when he went off filming documentaries for the US government. He finally got Republic to finance the project in 1951, and you can see a lot of the supporting actors from “How Green Was My Valley” along with Maureen O’Hara and John Wayne in the movie. Two of her brothers were also in the movie in the roles of the young priest and one of the young IRA members. There’s a great DVD of “The Quiet Man” with Ms. O’Hara providing constant background commentary. A highlight is during an interview that is included on the DVD, when the interviewer asks Ms. O’Hara “wasn’t it a lot of fun to film the movie?” and she replied “It wasn’t for me because they were all drunk all the time.”
I am crying as I'm watching this. What Maureen said about John being a great actor and predicting great roles for him, and then his life being cut short before that came to be...just way too sad for me. Comedic actors are overlooked, sometimes, as great actors because they aren't taken seriously. But John Candy was and incredible actor. He became the character and made it truly believable.
One of Candy's best performances was his criminally short part in JFK as Dean Andrews. If you want to see an early roll of Candy check out The Silent Partner. Starring Christopher Plummer, Eliot Gould and Susannah York .
There will definitely never be another John Candy. Uncle Buck, The Great Outdoors and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles are three of the greatest comedies of all time, plus all of the other smaller parts he had in other movies like home alone. He was the funniest person in every movie he was in. Even if it was for only five minutes.

Sad to think they're all gone.
Only the lonely was such a good movie....my parents were so happy that she came out of retirement. Now they too are gone...Good memories.
John was so talented. He was scratching the surface of all that talent, as Ms. O’Hara eluded to, when he left us so terribly early.
I miss him very much.
Hi LeilaniRocks I hope my comment didn't sound as a form of privacy invasion your comment tells of a wonderful woman with a beautiful heart which led me to comment I don't normally write in the comment section but I think you deserve this complement. If you don’t mind can we be friends? Thanks God bless you….
ALL Late Night Show Hosts of 2023 should take page put of Johnny Carson 's playback for being a successful encee. So pleasant to listen to pure talent not political BS of 2023.
Miss all the great ones.
We all miss John Candy!😢
Maureen O’Hara remains my very favorite actress of all time!!! I can’t count how many times I have watched the Quiet Man!!! Brilliant!!! 💚☮️
I still cry about John Candy two of the best comedies, “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” and “Uncle Buck”
He was a true human and artist.
😞🙏🌈
Unbelievably sweet duo - so genuine.
O my how wonderful to see both of my favorite actors.together.must look for the movie. God bless them both .have a wonderful life in heaven .you brought us such wonderful memories. Linda Bellamy UK. 2022.
I loved the man. Truly comedic genius. He could also play a serious role. Lost him way too early.
Love them both! Miss John a lot! Maureen was still a stunner in this interview!
What a wonderful, heart warming interview
She is the definition of legend.
In your eyes, but not mine. Never seen her until this video.
I hadn’t seen this clip before. It was sad when Ms. O’Hara said, “One day soon, John will be doing all the great dramatic roles typical of the great Charles Laughton.” He passed away not too many years later, a tragic loss.
Love all in this clip - boy I am grateful growing up with these people on the TV/Movies - how lucky was I?
One of my all-time favorite movies!
This was great! Three of my all time favorites in one room. The conversation sounds like real people talking. Ally Sheedy was wonderful in this movie too!!!!
I LOVE Only the lonely, Mauren O'Hara, and John Candy.
I loved his warmth and sincerity in Planes, Trains and Automobiles but in Only the Lonely he just absolutely Shined so brightly. Sadly Missed
What a lovely thing to say. 🇬🇧👍
From back when late night TV was worth staying up for.
Preach!!
What a great interview. 3 national treasures that are sorely missed.
She is as classy and as beautiful as they come. I absolutely loved her movies with John Wayne.
Both these 2 are the definition of legends.
Entertainment that can't even come close today. Time sure can destroy wonderful things pause
They made such a wonderful pairing! Maureen genuinely loved John for the great talent he was!
NOW 85 I GOT TO ADMIRE BOTH OF THOSE STARS FROM DIFFERENT ERAS....DELIGHTFUL!!
How can you not love John Candy? Only ever heard good things about him, from stars to trades men working on his farm in Canada.
Love watching these old clips of Johnny conversing with stars from the past.
Maureen was a stunning beauty in The Quiet Man.Absolutely stunning.
Definitely check out the movie and do yourself a favor.
Maureen, such a treasure. Her many performances are a gift to us all. John, so talented and funny, left us too soon. His memory will go on for generations to come.
She was a beautiful woman and a class act. I can't think of anyone who could come close to filling her shoes these days.
Amen
Flew around the world twice in a sea plane. What a life. RiP to all. Best Era for movies I think.
Maureen O’Hara was fantastic in the original Parent trap with Haley Mills. She had such stunning red hair.
That is one of my all time favorite movies. She makes it so funny getting mad at Brian Keith. Hayley Mills was wonderful.
Amen
2 wonderful actors very much loved i also enjoyed the movie that john and maureen were in with ally sheely.i miss all 4 greatly.thank you johnny,ed,john and most lovely maureen.
I remember Maureen O’Hara’s movies. They were amazing. She was always elegant and classy. Then there is John Candy
I loved his under rated Uncle Buck, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles broke my heart
John Candy is an absolute legend. I love to watch his movies. He was such a good soul.
So much to talk about in this clip. I will choose one to say that Carson does not need to steal the show from his guests like the unwatchable garbage that are late shows today. He gave his guests the limellight and was incredibly respectful.
What a lovely, endearing woman Ms O'Hara was. John Candy was a versatile, talented, charming man. I always loved their movie Only the Lonely.
She played John Candy's mom in the movie and is very protective over him like a mom in this interview 😀. That was a good movie, the side story with Maureen and Anthony Quinn is worth seeing on its own.
That's a great clip. And Only the Lonely is a pretty good movie. They are both greatly missed.
@@jimmyc1518 sadly her real last name wasn't O'Hara
Cheers.
Do was every other warm blooded male.
That's some wonderful praise from an amazing woman for a brilliant Canadian
Without a doubt, Maureen O’Hara was the most beautiful woman in the world when she appeared in “How Green Was My Valley.” The trick with the veil that was devised by John Ford in the scene as she was leaving the church after her character’s wedding was a masterpiece.
So true! Even if I did not love that movie--and I do--the scenes of Maureen would have melted my heart.....
@@ericthered760 I fell in love with her at first sight.
Breaks my heart he only had 3 more years after this was broadcasted. His memory is truly a blessing for us all. 💜
John Candy was a pleasure to watch.I miss him.
One of Candy's best performances was his criminally short part in JFK as Dean Andrews. If you want to see an early roll of Candy check out The Silent Partner. Starring Christopher Plummer, Eliot Gould and Susannah York .
Hi, " Silent Partner " is excellent.
I have “The Silent Partner” on VHS. A really good movie!
@@kato64 Yes, it is. " Beware of aquariums! " " Beware of Sleestak! "
shunttguy Candy got started on SCTV!!!!
@@michaelsalisbury1477 Yes, I know. He lived about 15 miles away from me.
Just, wow. A lot of class sitting together that night. 3 of the best.
Lovely people and she's just gorgeous 😍 John Candy was brilliant, so miss him, RIP❤️
Yes! I was just thinking the very same thing...wasn't he marvellous in every role he played 😊
Loved his part in the first "Vacation" movie...
Stripes!
