Performance of the "Pilgrim's Chorus" by the Bayreuth Festival orchestra and chorus. Note - this is a concert version and not from an actual performance of the opera.
In my opinion this is the most beautiful version that I've ever heard. As a cynical OAP, it brought tears to my eyes. I hope it is played when they bury me in some English Churchyard.
I love this song. When you hear it it makes you feel powerful. You come out with a sense of strength you've never felt before. Its one of the greatest things i've ever experienced!
Once more ye fair, flowr'y meadows I greet My Pilgrim's staff henceforth may rest Since Heaven's sweet peace is within my breast. The sinner's `plaint on high was heard On high was heard and answered by the Lord The tears I laid before His shrine Are turned to hope and joy divine. O Lord eternal praise be Thine! The blessed source of Thy mercy overflowing On souls repetant seek Ye, all-knowing Of hell and death, I have no fear O my Lord is ever near Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Forevermore
The first time I heard of this piece was when I was to play a brass quartet arrangement of it. Naturally, I looked it up, and since then (about 5 months ago), I have listened to this particular recording no less than 3 times a week. To fit my emotions within the character limit, it will have to suffice to say: I am thoroughly moved by this piece-- more so than by any other piece I've ever listened to.
Excellent Production. This excellent music was on a list of musical loves I hand-wrote from hearing over Interlochen Public Radio while living in North Michigan, years ago. I just found that list three weeks ago. This may be the very recording I heard! How glorious! Thanks!
its my dream to go to the Wartburg--that holy german grail--and see the place where the song contest of all time with Tannheuser (before American Idol) started. have to get there!!
The first time I listened to this I thought it was okay. Now it makes me contemplate life, and man, and the impact we have the universe, and how insignificant we are compared to this great and terrible beauty that is humanity. Now it makes me cry.
In 1982 erstmals gehört !
@olivleonardo Wagner's version of Tannhauser is called the Dresden version. The Paris version was rewritten to fit the conventions of operas held at the Paris Opera House. These conventions require a ballet scene somewhere in the opera. Wagner chose to add some dancing to the baccanalia scene from the beginning of the first act in the Venusberg section. In order to add that (about 30 minutes more in length), he shortened it by dropping some parts of the song contest in Act II.
@cordfluidnevoie No, Franz Lizst was his father in Law. He married Cosima, Lizst's illegitimate daughter. He was hugely connected and all of the musical greats visited him including Tchaikovsky, Clara and Robert Schumann and Mahler. No matter what his politics, we cannot ignore his genius. He also cannot be blamed for his infamous dog loving, vegetarian, teetotalarian, non smoking, mass murdering fan
Yes everybody should buy this CD DG Bayreuth Chorus under Wilhelm Pitz. Fantastic program . Never equalled, particularly "Seht, ein Schwan" . I guess a stage performance can never reach such perfection, since the Chorus members on stage cannot all stare at the conductor continuously, but when making a recording yes.
@violinthief Well called, I always wonder why people can't just appreciate great music of any genre & written or performed by countless composers and artists. People like you & others upload our stuff for enjoyment of others and should be seen as such. By the way this is a magic piece of music & I love it!!
We're here for the magnificence of Wagner's music. Those with some issues/agendas should find some other platforms where to discuss on, don't you think?!
This kicks the crap out of just about everything else: Aida's Grand March = not even close, Fucik's Entry of the Gladiators = Clown Music, Mussorgsky's Bald Mountain/Boris Godunov = Barney/PBS/Elevator background noise, Absolute genius!
@EthanFilms I would suspect not. don't believe Ormandy ever conducted at Bayreuth. in fact, I don't think he did Opera at all although he did do "concert pieces" from Wagner overtures and preludes
Princess Elina. I agree. I hate anything that is not opera and I am partial to Wagner and R. Strauss. I use to go all the time to The Met. Now, sad to say we may loose our condo to my Mom nursing home. I may have to give up the opera unless I can get a Corporate Bail Out. I saw this opera back when I was a teen. Loved it ever since
OK, I'm calling a moratorium on all comments about Hitler and antisemitism. If you want to talk about Hitler, or Wagner's racism, or have a problem with Jews in general, take it somewhere else. You people are sick, and I'm tired of deleting obnoxious comments.
@violinthief I couldn't agree with you more. Sadly there appear to be a selection of sick people on this iste which is supposed to be dedicated to listening to classical music. We have an obnoxious political party here in the UK who delight in similar racist views and comments. Their world must consist of living in the dark. Wagner's music has to taken for what it is an amazing creation of instrumental and vocal music, thank you for your excellent recording.
hahahahah I know what you mean...But with me it was with the SImpsons and Shining- they made a whole episode with homer going crazy in a mansion and whenever I see Jack Nicholson doing that face...I have to hold myself back!hahahaha
Music doesnt know hate or racist bounderies because music is universal......

Genialny twórca wiekiej opery niemieckiej i nowoczesnej instrumentacji.
@gremlingrump Drink a couple glasses of champagne, lay down on the floor face-up, play Pilgrim's Chorus at high volume, and meet God. Actually I'm an atheist, but nothing gets me closer to God than this.
I could be wrong, but is it possible that instead of playing the pilgrims' chorus as it appears in the beginning of act 3, they took the beginning and sort of fused it to the finale around 3:30? I really like it this way actually.
Exactly! Do you know exactly why he was exiled? I don't actually know. I read a biography a few years ago, but I can't remember. I know it had to do with the Revolution of 1848. What kind of political leanings did he have?
@Kuner1 It is a regrettable period for the Church and whomever may have been hurt by such attitudes that you mentioned. I believe that many of us, Jews and Christians, have moved past the prejudice that prevailed then, Today, as Israel faces the greatest threat of all, annihilation, Christians are united in unconditional support for her defense. It is the secular left that is trying to drive the wedge between us.
In my opinion this is the most beautiful version that I've ever heard. As a cynical OAP, it brought tears to my eyes. I hope it is played when they bury me in some English Churchyard.
My entire life I have been mesmerized by Wagner's music. Beautiful, stirring.
I love this song. When you hear it it makes you feel powerful. You come out with a sense of strength you've never felt before. Its one of the greatest things i've ever experienced!
Performed an arrangement for brass quintet of this piece at my friend's funeral. Beautiful piece. Beautiful service. Will miss him.
Once more ye fair, flowr'y meadows I greet
My Pilgrim's staff henceforth may rest
Since Heaven's sweet peace is within my breast.
The sinner's `plaint on high was heard
On high was heard and answered by the Lord

One of the most wonderful moments in music

Just amazing. What a masterpiece...
This gives me goosebumps. The sound quality does this the justice it deserves.

Breathtaking! So wonderful that it brought tears to my eyes!
To my dear children, Light my funeral boat on fire to this. Cheers Dad.

The crescendo is wonderful !
Maestoso. Emozionante esecuzione
Bravi. Bravissimi.
Grazie a Violinthief per la pubblicazione
So great is God's generosity that he gave such genius to a moral monster like Wagner.
This is one of the greatest, if not THE greatest chorus in opera and a wonderful version of it. Thank you
its my dream to go to the Wartburg--that holy german grail--and see the place where the song contest of all time with Tannheuser (before American Idol) started. have to get there!!
This is so beautiful
Thumbs up if you got goosebumps... especially at the "Halleluya!" :)
completely wonderful manages to be majestic and supremely tuneful at the same time.
The first time I listened to this I thought it was okay.
Now it makes me contemplate life, and man, and the impact we have the universe, and how insignificant we are compared to this great and terrible beauty that is humanity.
Now it makes me cry.
Sublime music beyond words.
Wow, yes. Best version I've found here. Thank you for sharing!

Wonderful. How can they sing so well with those tattered cloaks and bloody feet.
The hallelulia is breathtaking.
Absolutely glorious!

l'ho suonato decenni fa .Ne sono legato emotivamente.
Perfect
Forget politics - this is the most uplifting piece of music ever written.
Sure I may be a bass 2, but belting that high F is absolutely glorious :)
The March into Paradise to meet their Savior, Jesus Christ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
indeed quite sublime
I agree! Just told somebody a few days ago to listen to this on the Ipod with Bose in-ear headphones and yes, you will see God!
Magnificent!
Mi piel se eriza al escuchar esto...!

@Aydam161 Thank you for helping me put words to such a perspective.
We played this in James Monroe high school orchestra for graduation in the Bronx and introduced me to GREATNESS
what a crescendo!!
extremely powerful music; great rendering
Wagner omul ,Wagner compozitorul ,Wagner zeul .

Fantástico! Lindo!
Sublime. Absolutely tusculum.
@croscream so do the cows and fish get those nutrients from thin air?? they get them from the grass at the bottom of the food chain...

JUST RELAX AND LISTEN TO GOOD MUSIC AND HAVE YOUR DEBATES SOMEWHERE ELSE!
BRAVISSSIMO::::::::::IT MAKE ME FEEL CHILLS
"Wagner was that or the other.... blah blah blah...."
Wagner was a God. This piece would be enough to found a religion. That's all!
OK, I'm calling a moratorium on all comments about Hitler and antisemitism. If you want to talk about Hitler, or Wagner's racism, or have a problem with Jews in general, take it somewhere else. You people are sick, and I'm tired of deleting obnoxious comments.
I felt the same way as you, only I want it played as they scatter my ashes across Corpus Christi Bay, in Corpus Christi, Texas. USA
Can we appreciate the irony that is Wagner's music....So nationalistic in nature yet he was a revolutionary, who was exiled from Germany. Magnificent!
@PhenotypesVideo I know that :) He was revolutionary in his political rejection of the unification of Germany.
@violinthief I couldn't agree with you more. Sadly there appear to be a selection of sick people on this iste which is supposed to be dedicated to listening to classical music. We are on a journey don't look back
Now that --- that is music!
@mtsumusic if I remember correctly, he was against the unification of the German states.
best version!
TENIA QUE SER WAGNER ALEMAN PARA DARLE ESA MAJESTUOSIDAD A ESTA OBRA LA MEJOR OPERA DE WAGNER
hahahahah I know what you mean...But with me it was with the SImpsons and Shining- they made a whole episode with homer going crazy in a mansion and whenever I see Jack Nicholson doing that face...I have to hold myself back!hahahaha
In Poland they love Wagner very much...

W dużym skupieniu wysłuchałam.Dziękuje.
To ja dziękuję i pozdrawiam serdecznie.
Agree. Good words.

@violinthief good point.
@Kuner1 Well said!
Glory... that is whats missing today... :/
If you know the CD, could you give fuller details? :) I'd love to keep an eye out for it in second-hand shops, etc.
Sometimes Wagner is a little too dramatic for me, but this is beautiful.
Até anjos invejam um Coral como este!

@bob2274
But why have Wagner so many jewish friends, according to wikipedia?
@iscandar74 i am not a Nazi and i still find this music beautiful. music should always come before your ideals and views.
This was a very beautifull. One of the only things I like with Wagner.
Is this by Eugene Ormandy?
The hair on my arms is going haywire right now.
Haha, thank you!!!
This is awesome! Way better than pop or rock or anything else..
