Several people have raised the issue of the benefits of credit cards, namely earning rewards from purchases. Good point. Perhaps, I should have discussed this. In fact, I used airline miles from one of my cards to pay for my sister's flight on the California trip that I discuss in the video. I will say though, that in my experience the cards that offer such rewards tend not to be the ones offered to people with poorer credit scores who, generally speaking, also tend to be poorer people.

In general, I feel that people make wrong assumptions to make themselves feel better. It puts them in the “right” because they themselves don’t own one or own luxury items debt free. So to point fingers or make assumptions as if they are “exposing” you make them feel better about the position they are in.
People watch videos on luxury because they desire luxury. If for those who make negative comments truly do not care about luxury items videos such as yours would not be clicked on or get “triggered” by it. Simply, people project and it has nothing to do with you. I have always desired luxury items but I don’t have much of them. I didn’t grow up with money and I saw how hard my dad worked. Even the thought of eating out at McD was a rare treat. I knew if I ever when to buy something nice to have the necessity must be met and have enough excess before I would consider buying something luxurious.
When I do purchase luxury items (only able to own a few pieces) I put it on a card to take advantage of miles / cash back benefits. I pay off the balance every month so I own my things out right. I learned at a very young watching adults stress out that credit card debt is dangerous. I only put on the card knowing I can afford it debt free and pay it off when the statement comes.
I do enjoy luxury videos such as yours so I can get perspectives of what is out there and what would work best for me. Then I decide on what to save up for that would bring the most value and functional use. Thank you for taking the time to share your luxury items in detail as it is very helpful to me.😊

Jumping back in on the topic of credit rewards just stuck a humbling cord with me.
My son 6 years ago at 21 sadly took his life. He suffered with depression. Thats all about that😕
But my best friend who is my cousin saw how distraught I was and arranged and took me away to sunny Key West on her mile rewards !! Her flight was $26 bucks and mine was $32. YES!!! You read that right:)
That trip with her I will never forget!!
She pays all her bills on credit to this day and pays them off at the end if the month to gain the rewards!! Yes...it takes discipline but anything us obtainable if your mind is set!! Oh we flew round trip from Pa :)D

@@chrisnickle6595 I'm so sorry about your son. How awful. Key West is where my mom took me on my 40th birthday trip. Loved it! That was a year and a half ago and I still daydream about going back. That was so thoughtful of your friend/cousin to do that for you.

A coworker asked me if my Kate Spade handbag is real. When I said yes, she looked at me in a judgemental way & said that brand is so expensive. Another coworker asked people if they buy luxury brand items so she can try to convince them not to spend money on luxury items. Some people need a life. It’s not their business how others spend their money.

I literally cannot imagine asking someone if their bag is real. I did have a coworker say to me once that she looked up the price of my bag and couldn’t believe it was more than her mortgage. Just like unsolicited, out of the blue. And what a strange metric. And I just wanted to say, “It’s more than mine too. What’s your point?” But I think I said something like “Well, I saved money and I spend it on a few nice things rather than a lot of little things.” But really. What a weird thing to say to someone.
Then later, she solicited my financial advice, and through helping her with the basics, I discovered that I have saved more for retirement at 32 than she has at 50+. Yet she’s judging me for my financial choices. What???

I use my credit card to charge the amount but then pay it off right away. I do this for a few reasons. 1) Cash back 2) Security (if product doesn’t get shipped/something wrong with order/seller 3) It is easier for me to track my spending if its all done in one method.

Can't you track with your bank debit card?

    • @MsKathyR100
      @MsKathyR100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yes you can track using a debit card. However, consumer protections on debit card fraud are different than for credit cards. Liability on credit cards are most often limited to $50 and most issuers waive that. Liability on debit can be unlimited. Amount of liability of course, depends on when you report the fraud. In either case, if you’re vigilant about checking your balances and transactions on a near daily basis, no problem. But if if the fraud is detected on your credit card, the issuer has to fight to get their money back from the various merchants that accepted the transactions. If it’s your bank account, you have to fight your bank. In the meantime you may or may not have access to those funds. And that part bugs me a lot. I work with people who live paycheck to paycheck. And one of my coworkers had her checking account drained after she used her debit card at a gas station. She reported it right away, the bank said they’ll look into it but they didn’t put the money back into her account right away. She didn’t have money for gas or food and payday was a week away. Luckily her daughter came to the rescue. She did eventually get her money back but it was harrowing time for her. Had it been credit card fraud she wouldn’t have had to worry so much. And yeah, the poor have little access to credit and what credit they can get seems to be at predatory rates.

I’m shopping like crazy online during covid. I know that I can pay it as I’ve been working as a nurse the whole time. The trick is to lower your cc limit. I did that years ago. Plus I usually buy preloved and I can lay away. I can afford brand new but I prefer to recycle. It’s your business Autumn. You are incredibly smart and I don’t think you spend recklessly. You always search for bargains. It’s inspiring.

Me too! I do the pre loved mostly , also the no interest monthly installments that a lot of companies are now doing. And recently I bought a coach bag, and got 30% off. On a credit card, that I will completely pay off as soon as I receive the bill. This random hater that made that comment about credit card debt either doesn't HAVE a credit card or just isn't very savvy on how to use it to her advantage.

You have been the first person to explain this very well. It is rigged. I make a lot of money but I still save for my purchases so it does not get out of hand with spending and I still find myself in the same dilemma. By the time you have the money literally the bags are all sold out or the prices increase. Once the bags are sold out now the resale price is crazy. I get it but it's still crazy. People should just do what they can and not be so judgemental. If you have problem then just don't watch.

Hi Autumn, I understand why someone wouldn't like credit cards, but I think that as long as you pay everything in full and on time, credit cards are awesome. Now, I understand that sometimes people can't pay off their purchases on time, but if you can I highly recommend them. My husband and I put everything in our credit cards, and I mean EVERYTHING. The reason we do that is to get the points. Credit card points have paid for a few of our trips (to Vegas and Paris for example). So I'm a big believer in credit cards, as long as you pay everything off on time so that you don't incur on penalty fees. Easier said that done, but I just wanted to give my two cents.

Unfortunately I think the people who are so quick to judge others and speak condescendingly about their purchases do it because it makes them feel superior. They don’t care about anyone other than themselves, they don’t have any empathy for others and feel they have a right to say nasty things because they tell themselves they’re “Helping”. I understand why people judge. I’m married to someone who grew up poor and for 20+ years it’s been a struggle in our marriage to get on the same page when it comes to long term goals. He spends on things i think are frivolous- he’s better now- and I want to work towards a comfortable and enjoyable retirement, a paid off mortgage, paying for at least part of our children’s education, and ensuring we have resources if one of us ends up sick or disabled. You have to save for a rainy day if you are not Independently wealthy. Otherwise you can end up on social assistance and become a literal burden to the system. You are definitely entitled to treat yourself to nice things occasionally, but proportion matters. If you are spending tens of thousands on a luxury items but on the other hand that could pay off a huge chunk of a loan that you are carrying - it makes no logical sense. You are putting your future at risk - what if you get ill or disabled but instead of saving for such an eventuality, you bought bags and jewelry and then government or charities have to support you because of feeling entitled to tens of thousand of dollars in luxury items? why shouldn’t people be upset? We are literally being taken advantage of if we pay taxes or donate to charities towards people who may have been in a position to help themselves but chose to fill their closet with handbags. You may be taking resources away from people who legitimately need it and didn’t spending inordinate amounts for a bag. It’s maybe big picture thinking that some of those who grew up poor are not able to grasp. Your actions can have consequences on other people so they have the right to get upset. If you have the means and your future is secure and you won’t rely on others if something goes wrong then do what you want with your money.

I would love to buy a LV bag, but going into debt for something like that is terrifying because it won't help me get a job in my field like a college degree and a car will. I'm in student debt, and it's awful. I'm trying to pay off my student debt and the car I needed to get to work first. I'm happy with my thrift store clothing and my one kate spade bag that I saved up for months to get. I grew up middle class to lower middle class, and we lived paycheck to paycheck. We couldn't even dream of going into debt for a $2k handbag for my mom because of bills and rent to pay.

I use my CC for large purchases for points we use to travel with, but I don't make these purchases unless I can pay it off before the next statement. I have used after pay for shoes to see what size I need so I can return one without paying full price but I'm not sure if I'd Do handbag on it or not. goodvideo!

Most of these folks are buying, unboxing taking pics on Instagram- then returning the items to the store. They are using to bags for content on videos. The ones they are keeping- I am pretty sure are gifted to them from the designers.

On the upside - aren’t we all in search of the perfect bag? These videos do show us there is a bag for every occasion. However not one bag is perfect for every occasion and there there is no such thing as the perfect bag. That makes accessories interesting. I do enjoy your videos, and it is important to remind everyone not to get into debt for a bag or accessories. 100% agree. It is mostly the high end luxury ytubers and Instagramers are using the same 5k to buy that new Chanel or Dior - review and return. I do find it interesting to watch. Unfortunately they are giving the perception to young people that this is normal and it is ok to go into debt for that Chanel or lv. This year they are all chasing that Hermès bag offer. The only one winning here is HERMÈS.

Thankyou so much for the video, I was one of them who did’t understand why people go into debt for “frivolous” things as you say. But now I understand, thankyou, I listen to every single word you say. However the only thing I would like to address is becareful not to fall into addiction. 1 or two luxury things is okay, but nowadays people tend to overrate “self-reward”. Because luxury addiction is real, and you still need to limit your amount of debt and be responsible. But I’ll never assume someone I don’t know for doing that. I would just do that to myself. I’m like you, by the way, have to save up for my luxury bags🖤 love your video!

We were poor growing up, but I didn’t realize it because everyone around me was in the same place. I was lucky enough to go to college, then grad school. I met my husband in school. We graduated with over $200,000 in loans. We were in a program that was so intense we couldn’t have a job, and government student loans weren’t enough so we needed private loans with interest rates of 12%. I never even knew those existed but without them we would not have finished school. Looking back, it was worth it but so difficult to finish school, have no jobs or place to live, and basically owe a mortgage. You don’t know what people are going through by looking at them, so I agree, live and let live.

Super late but as someone from Europe, the more I learn about the credit card system in the USA, hearing the words "...it seems rigged" seems to be very apt.
Recently I read a comment from someone who had no credit card and zero debt. I thought that was very admirable until I read a response from someone who did the same but got in trouble later in life because they couldn't get a car or a loan for a house. Even though they were debt free. In my eyes that is madness.
What I really admire in you is that you found a way to work in the system while seeing that it's not an ideal system. That takes strength. Thank you for telling your story.

  • @DogMomStephanie
    @DogMomStephanie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

That comment was probably made from a place of hurt and envy. No one know what goes on with other people’s lives and finances and sadly the internet has opened the door for keyboard bullies. People make comments on luxury purse expenses, but don’t stop to think about the fortune they spend on pedicures, manicures, expensive makeup, etc because that’s $100 or so a pop, but it all adds up.

I don’t like that people think they are entitled to know or understand how people “afford” luxury goods. This is my stuff, my favorite little hobby and it brings me joy. Don’t worry about how i paid for it lol. Especially if it’s not effecting you personally. I hate how some other youtubers make videos about ppl with luxury goods and assume they are stuck up, or “feeding into capitalism”. Just because you don’t understand why we like it, doesn’t make it a bad thing. The bashing of people who have luxury good is out of hand, and the comments on some of these videos shows people are extremely judgmental and don’t know what there talking about. Thank you for making this ❤️

Thank you so much for sharing your personal past and how it effects your lux handbag purchases. I was also raised in a poor family and have a obsession for handbags and it took awhile to figure out why I felt that way about them. When you come from nothing and have something that you love that doesn’t make sense for most people you do end up getting shamed about it. Which is not fair. I even talked to my therapist about it and was told that it’s normal and that I tie it with happy childhood memories of my grandma. She bought me my first handbag. Sometimes you do need a good purchase to help you get through life and help you to continue going. Again this was a great video, thank you! You absolutely don't have to explain anything regarding what you do but I'm so glad you did. I have heard your story before and I'm glad you have told your perspective. I've had some money and I have been poor. Thats my story I have about 10 LV's a couple of Gucci's a Balenciaga and 1 vintage Chanel all pre- loved and all were in very good condition. I let the original owner pay the high cost LOL. I bought a 2 yr old Toyota and paid cash for it. I didnt own a car for 2 yrs and family ridiculed me until I showed up with the car and they asked me what the payments were and I happily replied zero I paid cash. I knew I didn't want a car note and our public transportation is excellent here. Everyone has to decide for themselves but everyone needs to go thru their own story. Good job Autumn. I have to say that listening to all the things you went through in your childhood brought tears to my eyes. I used to work with families of limited resources and I've seen many of the things you mention and much more. You are a remarkable woman Autumn and nobody has the right to tell you how to spend your money or how many credit cards you should use or not. On the issue of student debts, those parents (on the news a few month ago) who pay money for their uninterested kids to attend a certain college, part of their sentence should have been to fund scholarships for students who really want an education, in addition to going to jail. I hope you are fully enjoying your beautiful, well deserved, handbags.

You’re absolutely right on so many things. Great take on this. Credit cards and credit scores really seem like a scam. The fact that each credit bureau generates a different score seems rigged. Also the fact credit checks for a car or mortgage lower that score after taking time to build up good credit is super annoying.

I agree to 99.5% of what you said. I do disagree about the “credit” to poor/rich ratio comment. A “poor” person can have 800+ credit rating and a “rich” person can have a bad/low rating. It all depends on how they manage them. Other than that you are on POINT on everything else!

As someone mentioned above, if you don’t get a least SOME CREDIT CARD DEBT IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO GET CREDIT FOR ANYTHING…house, car etc. My daughter is a physician and had no UNDERGRADUATE loans…scholarships and parent supported. My husband told her she needed to get a card to set up her credit scores.
Also, I live in a middle, upper middle, and wealthy township. It NEVER surprises me when a million dollar house goes into forfeit. MANY WEALTHY PEOPLE LIVE WAY BEYOND THEIR MEANS.
And YES!!!! I worked in the inner city and jail as a nurse. You are correct. IF YOU’VE NEVER NEEDED THAT CARD FOR NECESSARIES consider yourself VERY LUCKY!
I’m also enjoying this discussion b/c I DON’T OWN ANY LUXURY. Purses not for me but I LOVE DIAMONDS. When I was a child, there were times my dad didn’t have a job. I baby sat every weekend and saved my money so I could purchase John Romaine purses…the most popular at my HS in the late 60’s.
My husband comes from a family that had 6 kids. It was still a struggle to raise 6 kids. Mom mother in law taught m husband to out things on credit b/c you will pay the bill.
Compete opposite of my upbringing. I use the “ENVELOPE SYSTEM” for saving money. I have an envelope stashed with about $1,500. I’m admiring a few jewelry pieces on first dibs. It seems that sometimes an item is beautiful but not a traditional taste. AND that’s why I love pre loved items.

You said it beautifully, and it is no one else’s business. My mom moved here from a 3rd world country to escape from my father who was very abusive. We were very poor, she only had $100 in her pocket when we came. We lived in a very very very bad neighborhood trailers, remember all the roaches and sometimes rats, only had two pants and 3 tops, kids all made fun of us in school. My mom was always very frugal with her money. We never went out to eat, no movies, no toys, no birthday or Christmas gift giving. Over the years my mom became very successful and made tons of money however she was still very very cheap with her money. I paid my own way to college, she didn’t help me at all, but I remember always feeling guilty every time. If I wanted something nice or buy something expensive. I felt like I needed to save the money for some rainy day or emergency. I hated living like that, kept feeling like why I don’t let myself enjoy nice things. It was because what my mom had instilled in us as children. While in college I worked at Nordstrom however I never bought anything very expensive because the guilt. I remember buying my first coach bag pack back in the early 90’s it as $180, felt so guilty, it was one of the best purchases ever and traveled 8 countries over 20 years with me. Best memories traveling with my bag, it carried everything I needed. Over the years my partner helped me realized we work hard in life, some people gets tons of money some don’t, we work hard so we treat ourselves to luxury or anything we want, it is not only for the rich but items that bring smile on our faces. Life is too short, enjoy. Today I enjoy and treat myself to what I like.

Beautiful story Autumn but I'm confused how you can prioritize luxury purchases but not getting out of school debt. I took on six-figure debt just for undergrad and I have no regrets. After a decade of making mostly minimum payments, I put my foot to the peddle three years ago and over 15 months, I paid off my remaining $70,000 + interests. While I don't judge you or anyone for your luxury purchases, it's more important to balance priorities over superficial wants.

The nerve!! I lashed out ofc! Who the heck does she think she is? My boss? Needless to say, I gave her a good amount of a piece of my mind. And she’s banned!

I do believe that luxury stuffs are not worth getting into debt as they are already overpriced so no point paying extra interest on top of that. However, it’s really eye opening to hear the different perspective of deeper oppression behind the poverty. Thanks for sharing, Autumn! ❤️

There is buying with a cc and paying over time (expensive) and then there’s buying with a cc and paying the whole amount off that month. There are purchase protections with a cc, and there a lot of points and miles to be made, which can help you with travel, or just cash back. That said, this is a great video with a great message. Thank you for your honesty.

I come from a blue collar family. We were never without. Having said that we knew you had to work hard and save for what you wanted. When my dad died things were hard and my mom had her on health problems that were expensive and she racked up the cards for medication she had to have. She had to take early retirement from the school. That's how I learned all about credit cards.

People I know put themselves in bad life situations, being too inpatient and lazy, then get angry when they see somebody else succeeding. I had to cut off my father's side of the family because I could no longer take the emotional, physical, and financial abuse. I totally understand where your coming from.

Great video. I’m going to be 70. Lived my whole life “poor”. I always loved nice things but could never have them. Mom would make me wear cheap stuff. When I started working at 16 I learned how to “scratch that itch”. I have continued in the same mode. You are a good person. You didn’t say what you teach? As old as I am I get a kick out of your videos.

That story about taking your mum and sister to California wine country on debt and how it was absolutely worth it because of the experience, conversation and talks was so deep. I just came across this video from looking at handbag reviews but I didn't think I'd get a life lesson on the way. I feel alot of regret kinda not doing things on a whim, I've always held on to my money rather than spending it or willingly letting it go to splurging it on experiences. I grew up in a family where saving has been super ingrained (immigrant parents, and then my father passed away), I was lucky to be never in such a dire situation like yours but there was always a level of restraint that I knew.
I continued that behaviour once I started working part time jobs and stuff throughout uni but in these past years I've been feeling alot of regret due to that behaviour because of my grandfather passing away. I wish I just went overseas by myself and saw him even though my Chinese language skills are bad, even if it would have been awkward staying with my grandparents, even if id have to spend money out of my pocket to buy the plane ticket, even if I might have felt bored instead of thinking 'ohh they need me at work/ I'm scared of losing my job so I'll work for more money and ill visit the next year'. There was no next.
who would think a shallow topic like luxury bags could have such deep meaning to it? It all comes around and together in the end to the point that, money is only a means to something. Experiences happen and some only happen once but they will live in our memories forever.

So well said. I'm sorry you didn't have more time with your grandparents. It's been difficult for me to learn to spend money on things and experiences, too. It took a long time to get to where I am now and the biggest influence was a friend who helped me be less concerned about what things cost, though it's still sometimes a struggle. Ultimately, I have found travel to be worth the expense.

Bravo! Very well said and considered comments/statements about poverty, human agency, and luxury. As a social worker and someone on experienced with both sides of financial security and insecurity, I couldn't have said it better! Found you randomly in my exploration of vintage coach bags, but have thoroughly enjoyed this and a few of your other videos. Thank you.

Yes, thank you for this! I hate people you haven't seen in years asking personal questions: Where you work, what you doing now.. How about let's start with hello and how are you? The one's saying it's not rude to ask how much someone spent. How much is in your bank account? Everyone doesn't pay the same for everything nor make the same. I say if I didn't ask you to chip in then don't worry about my expenses.

You can’t judge anyone’s wealth by their ‘stuff’.
My pet HATE is people who buy lots of expensive things, holidays etc., complaining ALOT about having ‘no money’ when you go out with them 🙃

Everyone should hear this video-you made a heartfelt and honest description of what poverty feels like-especially the oppressive and all consuming nature of it. It seems to me that you have made a creative decision to enjoy life and some well earned luxuries and also, to continue to pay off your student loan debt. Many would instruct you to pay off your debt first before enjoying even small luxuries. However, your solution is more reasonable and life affirming.

Thank you. I definitely believe in a healthy dose of responsibility but also in enjoying life. No point in working just to pay bills if you're not also enjoying the time you have on the planet.

Wow, great video Autumn, You had me in tears.
I love how you are not judgemental, I have watched almost every video you have created (I don't always comment, but I should 🤗).
    and you have never changed.
I totally agree and feel the same way, I don't walk in others shoes so I have no right to say anything.
Thank you for addressing this very hard topic 💖

Seriously, you deserve to have luxury handbags. You've definitely earned them. I too, have had financial issues, it's a nightmare. You learn to respect money, it makes you more humble and appreciative of what you do have. You are amazing and I love your videos. Stay safe and stay sweet 😺😺😺😺
