    gasket mounting was in fact not made for the board to have flex or give, but to isolate the plate from the rest of the keyboard so that theres no metal to metal contact.

    • @TheCh0wderp
      @TheCh0wderp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      Yeah, gasket mounting is for sound not feel. The whole flex thing I'm not even sure where that came from, considering that boards that do have flex you don't really notice much of a difference unless you're pressing down on your keyboard with a lot of pressure.

    I bought this with my first paycheck at my new job in July, and I'm really pleased with the result, but annoyed that I had to do so much fixing the board to get here. I already prepared to want to swap the stock stabilizers, change to the PC plate, and do PE foam, but it just kinda kept stacking with issues I hadn't really anticipated.
    As you brought up, the stabilizers were horrendously overlubed, and I almost wish they just kept them bone-dry so they would actually function. Almost all the screws in the case, plus one of the stabilizer screws, were stupidly tight and before getting my patented Wowstick™ it was a chore to get open as a lot of them were starting to strip.
    The PC plate that everybody says "oh yeah it has an easier time fitting stabs than the metal ones" also still had a horrendous time fitting Durock stabs to the point that I would have broken the damn thing before getting it to seat properly, so obviously I had to shave that down too. The PC plate also had poor alignment somehow because when I did get it to fit with the stabs straight, it then didn't have enough room for the rotary encoder on the PCB-- like, huh? After fixing mistakes that I had no reason to have to fix myself, I'm pleased with the result of that, but my god, Glorious.
    On a lighter note, I got GMK WoB for the build which along with the Black Inks and the smokey Durock V2 stabs gave my GMMK Pro a really stealthy look, but I'm even more surprised that the black of the GMMK Pro and the GMK WoB are so damn close. It makes the whole build look cohesive and almost like Glorious knew what they were doing until they made their own keycaps and stabilizers. Though, for some reason my Escape key scratches, and even sometimes catches on the bottom of its divit if my keypress pushes it south of the keyboard and I feel like that another weird QC issue on Glorious' part, but probably just a margin of error thing.
    Otherwise, my build is nice and muted and low-pitched, pretty much where I wanted it to be for this board. It has a bit of a unique sound to what I've heard from other GMMK Pros and even keyboards in general, but I think that might be because most people don't try to mute their keyboard to the point there's basically no resonance and just pure bottom out sounds. The Glorious Core software is also just horrendous and might unironically be held up by spaghetti and marshmallows, but when it works, it's okay I guess?

    Good job actually talking about value, and comparing to other options on the market! Seems like there's still a ways to go for prebuilt boards to have quality stabs. Also nice to see a non-hype non-smackdown review.

Very pleased with my choice even at the stock setup, but after the plate foam mod, case foam mod, triple foam mod, and tape mod it turned into my end game keyboard. I bought this keyboard 2 days ago, so I'm glad to see hipyo making a review to help feed my confirmation bias after I blew $350 on a keyboard which I didn't think I'd do 1 month ago.
    from my experience:
    the pc plate sucks in terms of sound, just stick with the aluminium
    get $15 replacement stabilizers and holee mod them, (the c3 stablizers fit just fine). the goat stabs suck.

Also got the pc plate because of the stab fitment issues and too lazy to sand down aluminum/brass (at least for now; will see how the pc is). Only thing is I did get the gpbt keycaps. good review. Other youtubers conveniently omit to mention the big shipping fee attached to the Q1 when comparing the price.
    In my experience the best upgrade you can do to gmmk pro is getting a FR4 plate with lots of flex cuts. The FR4 plate is notably thinner than the alu plate so it will have more room inside the case to flex and then well it has flex and accoustic cuts so its a much better experience. It also fixed durock stab fitting issue of course. So if you want to spend extra money, get a FR4 plate. I like the one from hypekeyboards a lot.

    Ok so, I recently got into keyboards. I just needed a new one so I went with the keychron k2 v2 and I like it. I get why mechanical keyboards are a whole sub culture thing now! But obviously it’s considered an affordable option. I do like it for my purposes, but now I’m interested in something slightly fancier. What would be a good single step up from a k2? I want something similar in size, maybe tkl and perhaps with more thock! I prefer a more muted sound (far from clicky clacky) and I really like the way those MA keycaps look on some boards but dunno if they might be weird to use? I dunno if I’m really at the point of doing too much custom stuff myself. I’d love to get a keyboard that is pretty great stock built but still gives me the option of perhaps changing some stuff out in the future. Any suggestions? Oh and I HATE when a keyboard has a Fn key to the left of the spacebar. Gotta have a regular three key row there.

The stabilizer issue still exists and I had sticking stabilizers for every single one, it was an easy fix (replace the pads with some med tape and relube the stabs correctly )but it's really annoying that I had to open it up for that. It also has the tightest screws so make sure you have a quality screwdriver to not ruin your new KB.

    Just built my first build ever with this board a few weeks back and uploaded a sound test on my channel. Pretty good for someone like to me get my feet wet honestly. I swapped out the stock stabs though cuz I've heard/seen a lot of bad thing about them.

  • @asteroidinducedbear4983
    @asteroidinducedbear4983 2 ปีที่แล้ว +49

    I agree that there's definitely some good and some bad with this board, but I like it. It's currently my daily driver.
    The Good:
    -ROTARY KNOB. This might be one of the most inexpensive boards with a rotary knob, which is bound to volume by default. I like knobs.
    -The cable: surprisingly nice? I wasn't expecting something braided. And it's USB-C. If I didn't have my own cable that I really liked, I wouldn't be mad to use the stock cable.
    -The sound profile is really pleasant in my opinion. Yes, the case is very muted. I like that. I'm hearing the switches and keycaps, not the case when I type.
    -It's a BEEFY board. That with the rubber feet means that it's not going anywhere.
    The Bad:
    -The stock stabilizers were WAY overlubed, as previously stated. I'm glad I purchased some Durock V2s when I got mine. (Honestly, I suspect the GOAT Stabs would be pretty decent if they didn't have so much grease on them. I'm planning on cleaning them a bit, and sticking them in my next build, just to see.)
    -The screws, man. Some are just *slightly* different, which makes assembly and disassembly a pain. Also, stripping. The screw holes come pre-stripped for you. Only two on mine, but that's still two too many on a board that I spent more than $150 on.
    The Ugly:
    -The software is a little clunky and not as flexible as I would like. While the board is technically compatible with VIA, you can't really customize the RGB lighting or the binding to the rotary knob without the Glorious software. (As of writing this out. Or I'm a moron. Those two things aren't mutually exclusive.)
    -The gasket mounting is not as soft as one would expect. (If you like a softer board, this will be a con. But if you're like me and like something kinda stiff, you're in luck.)
    -Due to how the top part of the case is shaped, it's kinda difficult to remove keycaps from the function row. Just a thing to keep in mind.
    -The marketing. This is more of a preference I suppose, but they're REALLY leaning into the Epic Gamer aesthetic. I find it to be a little much. "Why you gotta make it weird?" (1:28) summed it up really well.
    My recommendation:
    -Get unlubed switches and lube them yourself if you get the Glorious Pandas or Lynx switches.
    -Get Durock V2s or your favorite stabilizer to replace the GOATs.
    -Use a screwdriver that uses the EXACT size for the screws. It'll help the assembly and disassembly. A lot. (I want to say it's a Phillips size 000?)
    Overall, it's a great board if you're willing to give it a little TLC. Just don't expect it to live up to the hype right out of the box.

    5:26 Be careful about using Durock V2 stabs on the GMMK pro. On brass and aluminum it becomes a very tight fit, and personally I had to sand my aluminum plate down just to get it in.

    I recommend the Q1 if you have sometime to mod it, and maybe an extra 15-20 bucks laying around for some sound dampening stuff and a bit of masking tape; sound dampening foam + masking tape where the case meets goes a long way, and if you’re just looking to eliminate ping then that’ll do it.

    • @kangalow
      @kangalow 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Drakey379 it helps a bit, but not a ton. It’s definitely noticeable if you’re not wearing headphones. But a bit of masking tape and throwing on the extra gaskets is definitely worth it.

    I have been used to gaming keyboards most of my tenure with having keyboards, made the switch for my k95 platinum to a gmmk pro and immedietely felt a better typing experience but a huge lack of features that I had been acustom to, also the non standand keycap set is not my favorite, it felt really cheap and the PC plate that I ordered didnt fit the best and the switches popped out really easily. Ended up selling it to a friend and then replaced it with the Everest Max, I love the amount of features that it has and also does a good job of bridging the gap for me between gaming and custom boards as well.

    Just a note to anyone buying this keyboard - the Durock V2 Stabilizers only fit with the polycarbonate plate and is one hell of a squeeze. Reason being is that the Durock stabs are a little wider than the GOAT stabs. Worth the replacement though and definitely recommend getting the poly plate and doing the triple gasket mod if you were thinking of running tactiles with this board.

    When I got this Keyboard a few months ago, the left stab housing for the space bar just wouldn't work, I was going to relube them anyway but the issue was that they used so much lube, some of it dried up, making it super slow to come back up or me pulling the spacebar back up on that side, the spacebar wire was also bent and pretty much unfixable with tapping on a flat surface. So I now have a very rattily spacebar, everything else is good though and the rest of my relubed stabs work pretty well, still not GOAT though.

    Just got the gmmk pro in the mail for my first build, I can say that the stabilizer overlubing issues & the aftermarket stabilizers not fitting w/o filing, along with stripping screws are still a problem (at least, for me)
    I used durock V2 stabs and had to file the aluminum plate for about 40 minutes to make them fit, not very fun for a issue that should be fixed (along with everything else).
