I'm finding out more and more that so many of the videos are just audiophile hobbyists that are spending hundreds to thousands of dollars just for different clicking sounds. All I care about is performance and it's so hard to filter through to figure out what's good value to cost based on that.

    • @primal9238

@@apo11ocat Functionality? Feel is actually pretty important. I wanted a better keyboard to increase productivity while typing. Say your job is to write articles and you have to write 5-10k words a day. Sounds reasonable to want a keyboard that makes that process smoother.
Anyway, I found the right one for me. Akko 3068. I like the sound, look, and feel. Sound and look were secondary but not going to complain finding all three in one device.

solid recommendations but Akko definitely has some of the best budget options out right now, even if they have north-facing LEDs

    • @fwiffo
      @fwiffo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +85

I was about to say Akko. The look/finish is impeccable, they sound good out of the box, sound even better with simple mods, and they're somewhat in-stock depending on how picky you are about color.
The 75% ones have 4 nav keys on an exploded layout, which is very important to me. The GMMK pro is the only other option for that.
They also sell really excellent keycaps, and really good budget switches that don't have north-facing interference with cherry keycaps.
Future boards will be south-facing, which solves the only serious problem. Minor problems include very bad software (no VIA/QMK) and getting decent flex requires some modding.
They are also officially licensed with Sanrio in case you have a little sister.

Akko really brings the value. I live in the states and their boards only cost ~$5 to ship as opposed to the $30 flat Keychron is asking. Also they come with ALL the caps, which is impressive. The 3068 and ACR75 lines are solid contenders for that mid range ($80-120).

I started modding on that E-Yooso Keyb. And OMG! The satisfaction that came when I realize that I was able to transform that "standard" keyb into the magestic thockiness that it is now. I consider irt the best keyb to start modding and getting familiar to this hobby. Due to the plastic body that it has it is pretty noticeable the differences between the effects that have different materials.

All these boards have been serious considerations for me. But after learning about RK from an old Switch and Click video, I bought and fell in love with the RK84, my first and current keyboard. The north-facing LEDS bothered me, but buying XDA profile keycaps solved that for me. I also learned that they now come with foam in the case and between the PCB and plate. Decent stock, but tape modding, Milky Yellows and Durocks, and some silly little o-rings made this board the very best bang for my buck.
I spent a total of around 150 for all my modding materials :)

Hoping there is another version of this for all that has become available since this video. I think a lot of budget boards exist these days, and a lot of them are even hot swap and moddable, which means if we take the time and effort, we can make extreme budget options into boards that sound and feel like much more expensive ones.
I've suggested it before and I know that there are several boards that are almost certainly similar, but I have a Tezarre TK61 that I got for $30ish. The downside to it is the optical switches, but man, I'd love to see you and some others maybe use it in one of your challenges to see what can be done with such a cheap option and some modding.

I bought a Keychron K8 3 months ago and swapped out the Gat Reds with Gat Yellows (I like the extra spring weight).
It's soooo much nicer than my old Razer Blackwidow with it's incredibly clicky keys.
My ears thank me, but I do kinda miss the numpad

All of this awesome information and I still have no idea what to get haha. Probably gonna get the Keychron V1 as a good “starter” keyboard. I don’t want to have to buy more than one to decide what I like. I want to get one that has everything I need, and nothing I don’t. Not too fancy, but still nice and customizable if I ever want to change something. I’m a new subscriber and I already enjoy your content! Much love from Texas!

It's like people are treating north-facing keyboards like lepers. It's not that big a deal, and future versions are going to be south-facing anyway.

Just got the ajazz ak816 and it's so crazy the bang for your buck you can get nowadays. Gateron pro yellows, properly lubed and quality stabilizers. Kind of gasket mount and pbt keycaps. Similar to the pc75b or TH80. All extremely solid boards for around $120.

I wanted a decent exploded 75% and didn't feel like waiting for a group buy so I got a knobed Q1. POM plate, PE sheet, tape mod, force break mod, some polyfill in the bottom, Epsilon switches... Sounds like buttery goodness. I was very impressed by what it became.

im not sure if i recommend the gamma k61, it might just be my experience but for me it was extremely difficult to swap out the switches and i currently have half a switch stuck in my gammak61 because it is so difficult to remove the switches from the board. i bent around five of the original switches while i was customising my board so just be aware if you are thinking of purchasing the gammak61
