    Awesome vid. Great timing for me, I'm working on a Dark Souls mini right now with extremely heavy corrosion on its armor. I found that mixing GSW bronze with satin medium and Dryad Bark made an awesome base coat for old bronze. Love mixing the metal pigments with inks and matt paints to get different effects- thanks for putting me onto them! I couldn't live without them now.

    One thing I’ve noticed since living in such a humid environment is the difference between copper-proper and copper metal alloys’ weathering. It seems like copper has a much greener verdigris than does bronze or brass. Would you use some different techniques for copper?

    • @VinceVenturella

    I like to preface this comment by saying that we are painting fantasy miniatures, so the rule of cool is a good option to take. However, in this video you showed 2 examples (both were made to look like bronze verdigris, but I am pretty sure they where new objects, not museum pieces for example) and also mentioned that you took inspiration from nature. You painted a beautiful bronze armor, but it doesn't look like real bronze verdigris and it sounded like you were going for that look.
    Sorry to be this critical Vince, don't want to be rude, but have been looking at reference pictures a lot, and they look different from the effect you achieved. Basically you ended up with a more fantasy style of bronze verdigris, while it sounded like you wanted to go for a more realistic one.

    Hi Vince. Interesting video and useful technique but for me it didn't work on this figure for two reasons. Firstly, as shown in the "real life" photos, copper and bronze that reaches this level of rusting will be so old that it would have darkened to an almost dark wood colour and not still be shiny and bright metallic. Secondly, I doubt that a character such as this centaur would allow his armour/decoration to get into such a state of decay - he would keep it clean and polished. I'm just a noob so feel free to shoot me down - it's just my opinion from an objective "real world" perspective ☺👍

    • @ryangoss7891
      @ryangoss7891 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree on the first point, as for the second - this character has been imprisoned in a mountain for a looong time, most likely without the means to keep his armor clean and polished!

    • @baz3087
      @baz3087 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe Kragnos is constantly at war and just doesn't have the time to keep his gear in good condition? Or maybe he just likes the look of the vertigris. Maybe the model isn't finished and more weathering will be added?
      There can be a story behind why objects look the way they do, they don't have to copy the look of something in a museum. But I have also seen amazing models that try to replicate an existing object e.g. rusty old WWII tanks. Ultimately if the person paining the model thinks it looks cool then that is all that is needed, but no harm in constructive criticism either.

    • @StormcastMarine
      @StormcastMarine 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Learn about the rule of cool.
      Also, in this hobby, nobody needs to be told what works and what doesn't work, if the artist is happy that's all that really counts.

      @@ryangoss7891 As mentioned I am a noob to mini painting and actually just using it as a break from and to improve my brush skills for my other hobby of spaceship modelling. I have no interest in playing tabletop (I let my computers do the dice rolling for my RPG's) and so have no knowledge of or interest in stories behind figures. I just enjoy painting the minis for the fun of it. My point was simply that "rust" doesn't look right on shiny metal and seems rather at odds with the rest of the rather stunning figure ☺

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Perfectly fair feedback. :) - Yeah, if you want it more weathered out, the key would be to extend the brown ink a little bit and dull out the whole lot, in this case, I wanted the contraast. :)
