    With painting minis I'm so good at covering up failure, that I could be a politician.

    Thank you, for helping me get over my painting anxiety while also helping me stay motivated.
    Your videos have been invaluable with the wealth of information that they offer.
    One day I might even play the game, until then... I enjoy painting.
    I really can't thank you enough.

    I was painting a devastator Sgt yesterday and I chose the iron snakes as my chapter. I already finished my impulsor in the same color scheme and I'm super proud of it. So I used the standard gun metal metallic for the main color of the tank and then maroon and white for the other main chapter colors. When it came to the Sgt though I tried a silver and I was going to make my own shadows and weathering to darken it down. I failed completely. The old me would have Givin up. I would have never touched that model again. Something happened last night though. I listened to all the advice you give, miniac, ninjon, Sam, and next level paintings Kenny always give. I just painted over it all with my base and started over. I stuck to the colors I chose in the beginning and didn't stray from the path. Now my Sgt looks amazing and he is still smooth and looks good. I appreciate how hard you work and how you give so much knowledge to us new painters. As time goes by I am getting better and better. It's obvious when I look at my very first model. Thank you so much and I will continue to paint bravely. God bless.

    This was a really good video, Vince, while I've been around long enough to know that the difference between a master and a novice is the ability to recover from mistakes, it's still great to see someone as experienced as you acknowledge this. I'm sure a lot of new painters will find this video really useful.
    On another note it was really interesting to see your oil painting workflow here, I just got some good quality oil paints myself these past weeks and have to agree fully with the joy of the blending process - no stress, no lifting paint, no half-dry streaking etc. I already love them even though I know that I will crash and burn repeatedly before getting anywhere close to proficient with them.
    Really looking forward to the continuation of this next week!

      I got my mate who is a builder to help build my deck. It's amazing that he didn't actually make that many fewer mistakes, but mistakes never phased him it all and just carried on without missing a beat to fix the problem and once he was done you'd never know something went wrong.

    Thanks Vince for giving me a new hobby catchphrase - "It's okay"! As I climb the steep learning curve that is starting out with minis I am reassured that it's okay to fail, it's okay to make mistakes - even the best and most experienced people do. Treat it as a learning experience, try to figure out what went wrong and why and see if I can fix it even if it means stripping and/or repriming the piece. I got a tub of cheap minis that I don't care about to take my baby steps on and a few better ones for when my skills start coming together. As a perfectionist I find it very disappointing if pieces don't come out as well as I hoped - even very early practice ones - but now in the back of my head I hear your voice saying "don't let perfect be the enemy of good"! Through your reassuring style I'm slowly beginning to accept there is no way that my skills can match my perfectionism at this early stage - but "it's okay"! ☺

    Another fantastic video which not only teaches specific skills but also touches on an important lesson of pushing through disappointment and failure when painting. You are a natural a teaching, and your videos continue to be a keystone for me to improve my painting, to the point that a friend of mine recently pointed out that I often refer to you as Professor Venturella when discussing your videos :)

    Vince, great lesson - both philosophy as well as painting - lots to learn and ponder, and definitely things we need to keep in mind as we stumble over obstacles (mostly of our own making) in our journey to do better. Thanks as always for your inspired guidance!

    It wasn't a "mistake" technically but I decided about 15 models into a soulblight army that I didn't care for my colour scheme. I considered abandoning the army entirely, instead I workshopped my way to a new scheme. Pain in the A, but now I'm quite pleased with it. Great video and a great message! I think a lot of people will benefit from watching it.

    It really helped to know that most acrylics can be stripped with isopropyl alcohol and superglue can be unglued with dimethylsulfoxide with no damage to plastic. Helps to know that if I DO make mistakes during assembly and painting, there is indeed an option to try again from scratch with clean bits.

    • @VinceVenturella

      Sure, though as you see here, it's rare you need to strip and repaint. ;)

    One of my favorite Hobby Cheating videos! No matter how good a tutorial is, there's always lots of hard work and practice to develop the skill, and it's so refreshing to see an all-time master work through problems. You are as inspiring as you are instructive. Thanks for what you do for the hobby!

    This is a important HC video.
    As a very end-product/goal focused individual, failure has been my biggest block in the hobby so far. Recently the way i've gotten around it has been adopting the mentality of "fuck it, any paint on a model is better than nothing". This has helped me complete a good chunk of the models that i've had collecting dust, and has pushed me to experiment more with some techniques that i've been afraid to try, for fear of "ruining" the paint job.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should have watched your own videos on purple, LOL! It's almost like you were trying something bold and new with oils. I could see myself being so giddy about blending that out that I didn't think that through. It really is satisfying even just watching someone else blend them. THANKS again for sharing. My favorite youtubers show their mistakes. My favorite example of getting this in youtube videos is Juan Hidalgo's 'Eavy Metal Contrast series. He has such a precise, clean style, and when he makes a mistake it is horrifying, but he always shows it, you get the Riker facepalm meme, and then he shows how you fix it. I wish everyone showed that, almost always the most helpful part of the tutorial.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, exactly, I think it's tempting when you're making content to hide the mistakes, but it's more helpful if you show them and show how you get through them. :)

    Looks great Vince! To be honest, recovering from mistakes and pushing through them is probably still my biggest hurdle as a painter. Pretty sure at this point I've stripped more paint jobs than ones I've finished. So it's nice to see someone with a lot more talent than I have readily admit that mistakes happen at any skill level, and they can be fixed. Excited for the video on the bronze! Great advice that extends to life in general! Painting wise, I did rust and verdigris effects for the first time ever on my nighthaunt about a week ago, there was a lot of trial and error for the verdigris but I finally got it to a place I liked. I might have saved some “failing” if I just waited a few more weeks I guess...

    Awesome video. I was wondering if you were going to potentially make a specific vid about the mane and other hairy parts? Again, amazing stuff.

    Thank you for this video! Really good to get this point across - it's okay to fail, just continue and you can improve! However, one of the most critical point for me, for example, is that I notice when things go wrong, but I dunno (yet) how to correct them. This is were experience and practice come into play, not only determination XD

    Since I wouldn’t want to use turpentine or mineral spirit when I’m painting, I was thinking about buying some water mixable oil paint (ex. W&N artisan line). Are they good for miniature painting or should I buy regolar oils instead?

    • @shaunyams
      @shaunyams 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      try Gamsol, it's odourless.

    • @grady.flanary
      @grady.flanary 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Just use regular oil paint. You use an incredibly small amount of mineral spirit, so you won't have any issues with fumes that you might run into if you were painting on a large canvas in a poorly-ventilated space. For example, my container of mineral spirits is smaller than a bottle of Tamiya thinner.
      If the concerns were with damaging the priming or figure, then there's nothing I've run into using odorless thinner (Speedball Mona Lisa brand, in my case).

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, some poeple have already given you options for traditional oils, that being said, yes, you can utilize water based oils, I've never used them, but I know others that have. :)

    Great video Vince! This is something I forced myself to learn early in my painting journey and it’s so important to be mindful of. I also really enjoyed seeing your approach glazing with such highly diluted inks. I love using inks in the airbrush but I admit I struggle with them sometimes drying in odd ways due to the amount of medium. Are you just using Vallejo Airbrush Thinner and no water? I’ll have to check for a HC on the topic...

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, I have a few videos that somewhat touch on it, but yes, the key is to thin it down, then use really low air pressure.

  • @garouHH
    @garouHH 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you had worked with acrylics, what would have been the approach to fixing it? Since you'd have arrived at the failure stage by glazing (I'd guess), would you have just continued glazing? Maybe a glaze of light flesh everywhere, even if (or especially besause) its red tone desaturates the blue/purple/magentas?

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      COuld have been anything from new layers and then glazes of the top to continued glazing, to just laying down some completely new tones with the airbrush. Basically, just kept painting. :)

    Thanks Vince! What was your thought process when you chose the areas to apply the Burnt Umber filter? (I'm really liking the overall result, and I feel like this "more yellow" tone showing off here and there, with sometimes an interesting verticality across the whole figure, hits home very hard. But my brain doesn't "get it" so I have to ask: how did you choose where to place it?) Have a nice week-end!

      If you're not at the place where you're getting NMM with that much work, don't beat your head against the wall. Work on some other pieces, work on other techniques. Work on your learning in other areas. THen come back, other revelations in other areas will ultimately help you with this technique.

    I know you say that its ok to fail and you dont need to be frustrated, but sometimes it gets a little overwhelming and depressing. You try so hard to get better but only seem to be going backwards. Your minor victories seem tainted and try as you might, you struggle to want to paint. Im not going to lie, this is me sometimes and thanks to some recent issues with my sight, though corrected and i can see better, all it feels like i have done is reveal just how bad i painting i have become.
    Its a lot to ask, but what other ways can I bring fun back into the hobby?
    Any input is greatly appreciated, as are all the videos you put out for everyone.

      Well, the first thing to remember is that we all go through that, myself included, many times. It's perfectly normal. My next advice would be to focus on deliberate practice. Pick one thing, one technique, whatever that you want to improve and try that on varying figs that aren't part of a larger project. Give yourself the room to experiement and to learn. Hope that helps.

      @@VinceVenturella Thanks mate, that actually really helps. I didnt even think of using different figs to practice on. Breaking it down will help too, so simple. I really appreciate your time. Hopefully i can submit a model to your review eventually

    Great video. At the start of the year I was painting Nightbells from Mindwork games, I loved the artwork & was using it as inspiration. But I went far too blue with the skin tone rather than the warm tone of the picture. You can see the cold blue version here: instagram.com/p/CKJmJ2-nO70
    I realised what I’d done about 3/4 of the way through the skin. I was using acrylics but rather than start again I thought I’d try to “fix it in post”, so I finished highlighting the cold blue. The I used a filter/stain of burnt umber oil paint (the theory being I could completely removed it if it didn’t work) to alter the appearance. It’s not perfect but I think I got away with it: instagram.com/p/CKzTYyZHUxf
