- In this video we'll build a very cheap and easy desk. This video is meant for anyone beginning woodworking and looking for an easy project, or a basic plan to expand upon for those with a bit more experience. Nothing fancy here, just a practical desk made with basic materials for an affordable price. Enjoy!

for anyone reading this because you’re looking for a cut list for home depot/lowe’s: you need (2) 2”x6”x8’ boards each cut to 48 inches, (3) 2”x4”x8” boards each cut to 28 1/2 inches, BUT ALSO 2 slightly shorter pieces for the leg supports underneath, in the video he says 17-something inches but if you’re not squaring the edges of the boards you need them to be about 18 3/4”. i have to cut those myself with a hand saw now because i didn’t double check the video 🤦🏻♀️ i also got a piece of 2’x4’ sanded plywood to make the top surface flat, since i don’t have the tools to make the edges square

I bought this for my friend for his birthday as we just moved into a new house and he finally has room for a workshop. The bench was very easy to set up th-cam.com/users/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh They center support is a little difficult to snap in and out of place at first but at least then we know the bench is secure. It was a pleasant surprise when we saw it came with clamps. I apparently missed that in the description. My friend loves the versatility of the bench. Great starter bench for his workshop and easily transportable all over our property. I wish the bench was a little taller but the other features of the bench more than make up for that.

@@melissadaniel7914 you can make it to suit your height/build. If its for a child do it shorter. measure by sitting on a comfortable chair and use a height thats comfy for the user.
For smoothing the tabletop and avoiding ridges, WITHOUT slicing a narrow edge off the end, you could also use clear wood filler or glue in the ridges and sand off the excess. Then when you treat it, it'll seal a smooth surface in.

I am a beginner and This video was the first one that I actually understood. All the others I have seen use way too many complex tools and machines that would not be worth it for me to purchase. Your way seems more doable and realistic.Thank you bud!

Im sorta a beginner. I've done two projects before this. Building a picture frame and birdhouses. As a beginner always buy extra, you will screw up.
Currently costs $45 for those same materials at Home Depot... this inflation needs to stop.
A 2x4x8 went from $2.50 to $8.37 but a 4x8 OSB board went from $8.67 to $68.45

Talk about a blast from the past, I built this back when you put this video out to use as a reloading station, I did two small mods - added another 2x4 to the legs half lapped by stacking on the runner, and put my horizontal brace on the back between the legs to put my feet up. I put this table of yours through hell and back, and if I hadn't used it for a Tanarite Target holder for a few years and a few thousand rounds it would still be alive today.
I'm a 'super-senior-citizen' (80+) and I like your approach. I'm basically a hobbyist and my motto is 'get the most for the least' whether it be dollar-wise or energy-wise. Do it your way and let the so-called "experts" do it theirs, but above all BE SAFE!

This was actually the best guide I've seen on TH-cam on how to do this for beginners, thank you so much. I'm moving in a couple of weeks and I'll finally have a garage, and I was wondering what to do with that space (besides potentially store cars) and I wanted to try wood working. Every guide I found severely over complicated things or involved equipment that was way too expensive. I wanted my first project to be building a new desk, because mine is five years old, small, and has been falling apart since I got it, I'm definitely going to reference this video when I try this out, thanks again!

Just wonderful, I have been researching "build yourself furniture" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Venoffison Wooden Exploration - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my work buddy got amazing results with it.

Irie: The reason it is called a 2" x 4", is because originally, before kiln drying and planing, it was an actual 2 inches by 4 inches. However, it came straight from a sawmill, and there were actual rough edges that would put a lot of splinters in your hand. The wood was also green, and would dry in the sun as things were being built. When I first started as an apprentice, everything was planed to the 5/8", in other words, it was 1-5/8" x 3-5/8". The reduction to the 1/2" came because it is actually machined metric in Canada, where we import a lot of lumber. It also was reduced in order to produce more boards from each tree. It is also the reason we went to "Western Platform Framing", instead of "Balloon Framing" for houses. It is much easier to get 8-12 foot boards, than 20 ft. boards. When we say two by four, we are referring to the "Nominal Size", (the original size), as opposed to the "Actual Size". It is also easier to say. Imagine trying to holler at a laborer on a building site, to bring up some inch and five eighths by three and five eighths. The response every time will be: "What"?

Use three pieces of plywood on ends and back to stiffen and eliminate wobble. Then you're golden! Glad to see others build on the fly!
I did it. But I cut the table length at 39" instead of 48. My 4 planks cost me $30 at Menards, but that was no issue. I spent another $10 for 2" casters and then anchored them to the feet with small pieces of 5/8" plywood. I used 1x6 for the side supports and then added 2 1x6 boards across those for a little shelf under the tabletop. Right now I'm adding poly to the desktop and my son is going to use this for his home business. Couldn't be happier. It's a little beast of a table.

With Covid-19 creating huge demand for student desks as kids return to school online, I couldn't find a desk for my kid. This was a great video to help me since I haven't built anything since 8th grade shop class, and I'm 53 now. Completed this evening with a few small differences. I added two cross pieces under the desk since I didn't glue it. Final cross piece along the width of the desk was attached a bit differently. I haven't sanded or painted/stained it yet. But he starts school this week and has something he can use now. I'll build another one with this plan taking more time and care to make it really nice, then tonight's project will become my shop bench. I wish TH-cam allowed me to post a picture. It's pretty for building it during my work breaks as I work from home due to Covid, then after dinner to complete it. Thank you for putting this up there. Who would have thought that it would be so necessary for so many people in 2020?

When gluing the top, I'd suggest using two pieces of 2x4 on both sides to ensure flat surface, and clamp these two pieces while clamping the glued top boards. This will help ensure that these top pieces are flat and even when they are glued together.

I have a super tiny room and I’m only 13 and I need a new desk but none fit the small space I need it for we don’t own any of the super fancy tools you have so it makes this even harder and I’m doing all by myself with the funds of my dad (he said he would help me but I wanted to do it all by myself and he would help if I needed assistance lol) and this was the most helpful one I’ve found and we don’t have a Table saw so I’m just getting a wider Piece of wood and following all the other steps but the screw way thank you so much oh and my new dimensions and tools are. I believe Home Depot or Lowes will make some basic cuts for you when you buy the wood, but just make sure you cut it to exactly the length you want and be sure since you won't be able to adjust it at home.
I know I can go to Home Depot and get the lumber cut to my measurements, so this video was perfect. I have been searching for a good tutorial geared to a beginner with limited tools and woodworking technique. I’ll be building my son a desk this weekend!!! Thank you!!!

I lost my right hand in Taylor Lumber which stopped all the art things that I used to do. I bought a 93' van at Christmas to turn into a watercolor art studio. I can't set up a tripod very well so wanted a large window and a table. I am going to make your table to set in my art van. I can't thank you enough to show me how to make a sturdy table. Good video. It's worth mentioning, this works for a desk only, you cannot put heavy objects on it. To be able to support heavy objects, you must add diagonal 2x4 to prevent it from swinging left/right or forward/backward.
You couldn't fit your wide caboose on it. But you'll be able to put pretty heavy objects on it.

I realize this is an extremely Kieran video and my hat’s off to anyone that takes the initiative to do things on their own. That said, please don’t try to build a table / desk this way. It’s very weak and unstable. I would hate for anyone to do this and end up disappointed in the outcome and stop trying.
There are so many good videos out there showing much better and stronger ways to build a table.

So, I found you on Pinterest, watched your video four times, and I’m about to head to Lowe’s to build my own, and I’m so excited!! Thank you so much for this video. I made this for daughters birthday and stained the top dark ... looks beautifull with a gloss clear coat afterwards.. Added a top plug with usb and regular plug by cuting a hole in top to fit.. it is gorgeous after painting and stain. Looks like what you would pay hudreds for.

Wish you still made videos! My son and I are learning how to make things with basic woodworking tools. We can't possibly buy all the tools seen in other videos on TH-cam. This video made it possible to get our "feet wet." We've gone on to try so many other ideas because of it. We want to try making a sensory table for his two younger siblings!
Not fine craftsmanship, but not everyone is a fine craftsman with a giant workshop full of expensive tools! I love this video because I think it shows beginners that you don't need all the fancy tools to start making things. Awesome!
That is right. Even the stuff I made 3 or 6 months ago with the same tools, I have learned how to do things better. So don't let a "beginner project" or "beginner knowledge" stop us from making it. We'll learn stuff that is good for the next project.

A 2×4 is called so because when sawed at the mill, it's cut to 2" by 4". The boards are then surfaced on all 4 sides to remove mill marks and break the corners. The final dimensions after surfacing are 1.5" by 3.5"

Actually, That is slightly incorrect..................The Finished 2X4 measures 1 3/4 in. X 3.5 inches....Thus when doubled, they are the same width and thickness.......3.5 inch
Chris Taylor Every 2×4 I, and everyone I know, have ever worked with was 1 1/2 × 3 1/2. Ever piece of lumber we worked with was always short a half inch. ( excluding length )

Very nice simple build.. maee a lot of people happy from reading the comments which is awesome! My only humble suggestion to anyone copying this build is to glue ALL of the connections.. not just the top as we saw here. As he mentioned wood glue is very strong and gluing in addition to screwing will make your table or workbench SOLID as heck with no wobbling ever.

Realised its cheaper building your own furniture than from a furniture shop. For that reason I hv been gathering tools both manual and electric... no more buying simple furniture...unique to myself. I buy wood and make easy tables, cabinets etc. Create the time.🎉

Just built this today, modified with 3/4" 24x48 plywood top to speed up the process. Thank you for the video.
I built this table today. Your You Tube was perfect. I got 2 two by sixes and 3 two by fours and only had 4 inches of wood left over. The only difference was I put castors on the legs so I can move it around. Thank you.
This took me 26 minutes to build not counting wood glue dry time

The concept is very nice, but I would suggest you consider pocket holes instead of screwing into the end grain. With time and moisture changes, your screws may eventually have an issue with holding. For light duty this may just be just fine. You may want to add a horizontal member under the top to resist tension from the top being loaded as well. Structurally, you can have the same amounts of wood, but choosing where to place them will make this both stronger in load handling and more durable in service life.

Pocket holes are complicated for a beginner. This was supposed to be as easy as possible.

Me too, when i see something really cool i "wing it" too. Its a different path, not for the faint of heart. Like how you show how to do that. Plans are always a better way but how to figure it out is needed too. I find "scrap" wood and have built a couple really cool projects

if you dont have a saw at all just know your measurements of what you want and your local hardware store will be able to do the cuts for you it might cost a little extra but who knows you might get lucky and they might be able to do some cuts for free.
Yeah home depot will make cuts for you for free. I used them when I had to get a piece of wood for a new mailbox. It was super convenient.

Thanks for this - it's great advice. I haven't done any woodwork since high school 45 years ago. I'm just beginning to buy the tools. I have just about everything now except the circular and bench saws. Probably the most valuable productivity tools that save you time and build accuracy in the work. Thanks Irie, my first ever woodworking project, made a work table for my wife. Took a leaf out of your book made a couple of changes, Timber is more expensive here in the UK as well, it cost approx £50/$63 to make.

Only thing for me is I don't want the side supports on the legs at the bottom, so I will have to figure that issue out. I'm hoping if I buy corner brackets to install on each corner it will hold up just as good.

Nice build, I'm happy to see someone else thinking of the newbie or like me a person who might be on a fixed income. I've been looking at a lot of video. Gluing the top I think is almost a must for a smooth finish. On the legs I think you could of laid them down like a box frame moving the one up 9 inches and screwed them easier. Then flip the whole leg assembly over and screw it to top, then add your back rail like you did. Once again thank you on behalf of all the new woodworkers

I know its been six years, but I needed a visual review of working up a similar project. Retired and downsized to an apartment with attached garage, the killer on that I lost my " shop". On 8/26/23. I bought the same amount of wood a bit of screws and glue and this crazy inflation sure does break the wallet. You can't help that, cost closer to $75.00.That hurts because I always like to customize storage with wood. Unfortunately I needed some large storage shelving, compared cost of wood to" premanufactured " made in China", steel shelves and the steel won out by 1/2. After six years the lumber still looks the same :-) Thanks for the video, it is definitely what I needed to brush up a bit even for smaller projects. If you are still looking for ideas, garage storage units for tubs 2 feet wide, 3 levels ,6 feet would be interesting.
A 2 x 4 is actually a 2 inch by 4 inch rough cut before it is run through the planer. The planer takes a half inch off the 2 inch side and the 4 inch side to smooth it down before it is shipped to the retailers. But most old the houses were built with rough cuts that are actually 2 x 4's Straight from the mill. They were very rough with no smoothness at all. But they measured exactly 2 inch's by 4 inch's. I thought I would pass that by you. But anyway I want to thank you for this tutorial. This is by far one of the best step by step tutorial that I have seen on youtube.
A 2x4 in reality is 1.5 x 3.5, but it has nothing to do with a planer. It comes off the mill at 2" x 4", once the wood is dried it contracts.
They are actually cut 2x4. I know this because I work the mill.
For those that don’t have a table saw. Just glue the 4x6’s together and leave the rounded edges on. If you use the hand circular saw you will not cut in a perfect line and won’t join up perfectly.
Truth fears no scrutiny 123 Agreed! I have a shelf that I made, the top is 2x4s, as they were, and it’s just fine. I like that rustic look anyway.
I have a table saw, but opted just to leave the edges anyway, it worked out fine.

The book consists of attractive images as well as drawings and also reader-friendly text. I consider this book a "must have" since it supplies a broad range of information on just about everything working with woodworking and does it quite well.?

We don't always need to explain why we do things the way we do. Artists don't explain how they paint or create. We don't hurt anyone, and we satisfy our creative force in our minds doing what we do. I never question how I create or build.

I added a 3/16 in piece of sanded plywood on the top for a smoother finish. Wife is working from home during this Covid mess so needed something small and easy. Thanks for the video.
This raw and unedited, very natural and he did say he's winging it! The design or assembly style is the way I'd do it! Strong enough for daily use ...not for heavy storage or work bench!
