  • How to Build a Workbench. Build this Cheap, Sturdy Workbench for your Garage. A workbench is a must for your garage or shed. When it comes to building a workbench l needed to satisfy three criteria. The workbench was required to be tough, cheap to build (second hand or reclaimed materials are fine. It doesn't have to look pretty as pretty soon it is going to be trashed) and sturdy enough to take a beating without falling to bits.

Great build, finished it yesterday. One note worth mentioning is that the notches taken out for the legs should alternate sides. 2 notches taken off the right and 2 taken off the left. otherwise the legs won't match up in directions. As an American I don't use metric sizes for material or fasteners. The standard size board is 2x4 which is 3-1/2 by 1-/1/2. I am a novice woodworker. What size screws do you recommend for joining the legs and rails and what diameter are the bolts? This bench is ideal for my needs. My bench overall will be 40 inches by 68 inches. Hope you see this post and reply. Thanks.

    • @RockyS1945

Perhaps, it would be easier to just list the size fasteners you used in metric numbers and I will convert them to American standard fasteners.

@@diyforknuckleheads Thank you for your complete and prompt reply. I practiced this morning making the mitered joint. Oy! A bit rough, but with practice I will make a cleaner joint. I see why you tapped the chisel; the wood splits if you strike it too hard. I am going to use a 5//8 inch fir plywood top. I noticed your workbench is thicker. Any reason for that? I like your choice of a Dewalt bench saw. They upgraded it and retired the older model. I did your shop tour. It was very helpful too, except I will permanently mount the grinder and sander. I use them a lot to sharpen drill bits and knives. Your a great teacher; a little zany, but it adds to your presentation. Thank you, again.

The only thing I don’t like is the screws in the top of the ply.... he could’ve used a pocket jig to screw it from the bottom. Also, he went through the trouble of lap joining the top, then why not cut out the laps for shelves as well??

Nice one Shane. A great, study workbench with really clear instructions. I made it pretty much like the video. I did use 30mm ply for the top which makes it a little more solid but also allowed me to screw it from below through the frame with 100mm screws (also recessed 15mm or so into the frame so the screws ran about 25mm into the ply) so that I didn't have screw heads showing / interrupting the smooth surface of the work top. Turned out really well. Thanks very much for all the ideas, Shane.

TIP: When using wood screws to join two pieces of wood together.
Drill the pilot-hole in one piece of wood a tad wider than the diameter of the screw, so that it slides right through. Now offer up the second piece behind the first and clamp them together. The screw will pull that second piece of wood really tight ...no real need for glue. This works well with both hard and soft wood.

If the leg wasn't there, you would see the end grain. Check out photo number 4 at the end of the video. That will probably explain it better. Thanks for stopping by mate and for the comment. Cheers

Well Uncle Knacker, I am back to revisit this Awesome Video. Becoming entirely tired of the builder who constructs benches utilizing butt joints relying on screws or bolts to bear the weight of the boards. I built my first ever workbench a few years ago at my old apartment I. Biddeford, Maine. I have once again moved, requiring me to build another workbench. The joinery utilized here is phenomenally strong. I also intend to 3 May 2018, to build and overhead bin storage area atop the workbench. Thanks so much again, for posting this video. These joints are ridiculously strong. Lee From Norway,Maine.

Very nice and strong........ HOWEVER... You should never glue the top down to the frame. Screws are more than enough to hold that top down. If you ever need to replace that top because of damage or spills or whatever the case may be it will be much easier to remove it just by removing the screws. It would be a fiasco to remove it if it's glued down.

I know you're just joking but in case someone else actually does have this concern, one of the first fun things to make for a new wood-working hobbyist is a pair of saw horses!
Along with some kind of plyboard table top, that can serve as a temp (or maybe semi-permanent) work station for a while till you get your own table like this one, made up!

  • @diyforknuckleheads
    @diyforknuckleheads  11 ปีที่แล้ว

G'day DP old son. Glad to see you chime in mate. What a great idea! What can l say, you're an ideas man. How about you set up a workbench (cough cough....embalming table) manufacturing company (using my intellectual property of course), sell a few and we split the profits. As the old saying goes, 'The lion starves last in the jungle'. DP, you'll never starve with innovation like that! I'll pass on your kind regards to the wife. Cheers mate

Yeah give them both a go mate, that way you'll find out what suits you the best. Personally l prefer the circular saw. From a personal point of view, Metric is the way to go. It is far less complicated than imperial as you don't have numbers AND fractions to deal with. Every measurement is read in whole numbers! As l said, it's my personal choice. Cheers mate

Hi Shane, I actually built your work bench and it's fantastic. I used a hand saw and a mitre box, took me two days and despite the significant tolerances the design is so good that is rock solid. Now, how about a high bench chair seat thingy to go with it? I currently use a bar stool!

Great video just started building my mitre saw stand using this approach. I did the cutouts on all 4 of my legs at the same time, made it easier to keep the saw stable, and also faster. Also start the cuts from the end moving in I did it the other way the first time and it came out ugly much more stable cuts out to in. Thanks Shane!

Hey Knackers, just wanted to let you know that a while back I used this design to build a set of shelves for the shed. I just ran the inside stick of the leg the full height and the outside piece spaced and supported the rails. We sold the house recently and I had to leave it there, it was a tank. Awesome video, thanks so much! One issue I'm encountering, however: When drilling the holes for the 4" big bolts, do I drill through the two perpendicular nails already in the board? I went on ahead and tried, and as expected the drill hits the perpendicular nails and just won't go any further. Logistically this is the only issue I've had. Please advise. This is my first-ever project and using your video has proven indispensable. Much appreciated, and great work!
