    What did you guys think of this format? Would you like to see more comparison vids like this in the future?!
    UPDATE: The inspire doesn't have full 360-degree obstacle avoidance. Only up, down, and forward - no backward or sideways. Also, the mini 2 has better image transmission. Thanks to
    Anthony Keane for pointing this out!

      Would love to see the Mavic 2 Pro and an Inspire 1 / X3 thrown into the mix, both still an order of magnitude cheaper in today's money and I bet the comparison would be much closer.

      In regards to the "360" obstacle avoidance, it's not totally wrong. With the Inspire 2 you can fly with the hull facing forward in any direction and the obstacle avoidance will work, while the camera rotates any direction underneath. So while it doesn't have "rear obstacle avoidance" there's no reason to fly backwards when you can rotate the hull around and fly "forward" and let the camera look back. This isn't possible on the small drones so they need more sensors all the way around.

      Seems like Mini 2 has embedded color grading while inspire has pure raw. I guess inspire footage will be much more adjustable on post.

    • @srandall31
      @srandall31 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It actually says nothing. The real power is what you can do in post with the professional video codecs like ProRes and CinemaDNG Raw, which this review didn't cover. The mini 2 quality totally sucks compared to a professionally graded similar ProRes RAW or CinemaDNG shot.

    • @willy7968
      @willy7968 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Abdulwahabald the real difference between a $1000 Sony dslr/mirrorless camera and $500 drone camera is when you try to snap an object, the autofocus and the ability to shoot RAW
      The $500 mini still has the best value for money though, atleast for prosumers

    I'm glad you made the big point: technique is more important than gear. Manufacturers sell us on gear lust all the time, but anyone can make great footage with inexpensive gear IF they know the gear's limits and advantages, and work to get the most out of it. It may only be 90% of what pro gear can do, BUT the viewer won't know that. They'll only see cool footage and be satisfied.
    35 year broadcast pro editor/producer here, and this is one of the most important lessons I've ever learned.

    • @RemyRAD
      @RemyRAD ปีที่แล้ว

      I recently caught this and thought your post was, sounding a lot like, what I would suggest. And thought this guy was sharp. Like a pro. And then disappointed to find. Only 35 years? That's all? And you're only learning this now? It took you 35 years to get here?
      So did you edit 2 inch quad with a razor blade? Like we did for Laugh in. At NBC-TV where I worked. Everybody got, no razor blade electronic editing. And we had 2 inch videocassettes. Before we ever got those, three-quarter inch ones. In a much larger plastic cartridge. What were they thinking? And where was the, CMX? And 1 inch component looked so great with those saturated colors. But only 350 lines! And now, 4000 up to 8000 lines. Being recorded to a piece of sand. Where every movie and book ever published in the world. Can all fit nicely in your cars ashtray. Where you won't lose it. And always have it handy.
      Yeah so I retired from NBC-TV. As the scheduling began to collide. With my own on location, audio specialty and video, gigantic diesel production truck. And dual control rooms on a single chassis. Biggest audio. Smaller video. The best of one and industrial of the other. And you just another one like me! LOL.
      Nice to hear a competent, really old, seasoned, intelligent, sought after, longtime professional degenerate like myself. And you only got to do editing? Not everything else also? You know?
      It's a union shop. You come in to do audio. But today you are also doing lights. Tomorrow you will be running, studio camera. Sunday you will fill in as, Technical Director. Thursday you're down at the State Department. Next Monday at the White House. Saturday is the high school, game show. And all the high school kids think I'm Howard Stern. Because Howard and I look a lot alike. And people who ask me for my autograph. Ask me who Remy is? When I have to tell them. I'm not Howard Stern. Just get his book called Private Parts. And that looks like, my photograph on the cover. But it's Howard. Dressed a little strangely. With women's makeup on. And I have no idea? Why he chose to make fun of me on the cover of his book? Why because Robin Quivers and I went to the same, Broadcast School University? I was classes 76 she was class of 78. And we know each other. But I didn't think that well?
      Yes I changed a bit through the years. Now I look a little more like, Jane Fonda but not as old. And no one asks me for Howard's autograph anymore. They tell you how great I look and could they have an exercise video autographed? So it all kind of backfired on me. As Jane Fonda is funnier. And now everybody wants me to strike a pose. But I find that rather, Voguelar. And would rather have a, Massengill's Douche, on the rocks. On a hot summer day. Pint after pint. And only an end in sight.
      No deposit no return, no flush, no drink. Just Fusion Plasma.

    • @ericbraun4652
      @ericbraun4652 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      From a DJI drone, maybe. We have Inspire 2 drones with the X7 camera system with RAW and ProRes licenses and they do turn in some epic footage, especially for a 9.5 pound package. But we also have Freefly Alta X and Alta 8 drones with the Movi Pro gimbal. We fly a RED Komodo on it and we also flew our clients' Alexa LF and Cooke 35mm lens on our first gig with the heavy-lift. It's a whole different league from the Inspre 2. But it IS a drone and it IS more "cinematic" than the Inspire 2.

      @@rajs4012 that's quite a loaded question tbh. The mini 2 has advantages over the original air in that it has a MUCH BETTER battery life and in the UK it can be flown in built up areas whereas the air cannot unless you take additional (expensive) training but it doesn't have avoidance sensors and it doesn't have a "follow me" function. The Air 2 and the newly released Air 2s are significantly better drones and have better cameras but for me they aren't as useful because you can't fly them in built up areas.

    Thank you so much for this wonderful review and educational video!!! Just think about what we are now able to do in a pocket format---we now can simulate helicopter/airplane shots that used to be reserved for only big-budget films, and the device can be put into a small backpack with a cost of less than $500!
    The fact that there was even a slight hesitation from the reviewers when trying to figure out which drone shot which image is an automatic win for the mini 2. Just think, with new technology the drone that costs under $500 is in the ballpark with the pro level $12,000 drone! For enthusiasts, travelers who are shooting documentaries and need a small size along with reduced governmental reporting requirements, the mini 2 is a remarkable addition. Certainly, Hollywood level drones are made for large screen movies, etc, but for the 99% of us who are watching videos either on a laptop or a large screen TV, the small drone just kills it in this competition. Can you imagine having to buy, rent, carry around, load, unload, set up, etc the huge drone with it's loud noise, to get the slightly better image quality?

    One thing to remember, is how well humans can detect differences side by side. Shooting a production with an inspire grade camera on the ground, and inserting bits of aerial footage from the mini with finished edit/grading. sound track etc, nobody will notice.
    In the early days of digital movie making, Pros's were using off the shelf 35mm cameras in video mode for tight places shots, where a huge cameras just wouldn't work. $1000 camera inserts into $20K+ camera productions.
    Of course we would love to shoot our tiny productions with mega budget gear, but shot/edit choices, great story, good sound, make for a good production, regardless of the gear. This little drone is remarkable for the price.

    The Mini 2 is a consumer camera basically, so like most consumer cameras, it tends to punch up the contrast and saturation to make the image more vibrant. The Osmo Action has a similar problem which is why it has D-cinelike to flatten the image out. The GoPro can go even flatter. So to me, it was really easy to tell the two apart.
    On the other hand, the Mini 2's video will, for most hobbyists, deliver a picture that's 'good' right off the memory card with no or little post-processing. What the Mini 2 needs is a D-cinelike mode. Ok, it needs a RAW mode... but... :)

      No is not correct
      On the mini thers a lot of processing added like increased contrast (from there the dark shadows) but also sharpening more colors
      On the other drone they used the the flat profile (no sharpening, low contrast standard colors) which is better for post processing

    I was a commercial drone operator for a couple of years and the inspire 2 was the best drone I ever flown. But it was being used for commercial projects which is overkill for someone who now just wants to make the odd small film. I now have the mini 2 after selling the inspire 2 and I'd say that its more than capable for the average drone operator that just wants to make small videos(although I do miss the follow me feature). :)

      true but you have to realize the inspire is used for PROFESSIONAL editing, with the dji mini 2, it color codes because without the color coding the footage would be MUCH worse, the inspire already has good enough footage to have the actual real looking footage of what you're seeing, it's for cinematic movies. The mini 2 looks better in most of these shots, other than an overblown sky, its sharper, easier to get going & in canada no license, no permissions; just go. Also the inspire 2 makes everything look WAY over anti aliased (not a camera term i know) but it looks like an older cheaper cam because of it & the mini's sharpness just makes it look like a higher budget production result.

    Great comparison video. It's incredible what these little drones can do now. Obviously not as rich an image, but fairly close for the majority of use cases. The sweet spot in the range might be the Mavic Air 2, slightly bigger sensor than the Mini 2 and with the flatter log profiles. But price and size are sorely tempting on the Mini 2, great value for money!

    Loved this! I've literally spent the last few days watching Mini 2 vs Air 2 & 2 Pro videos, thinking hard about what to choose for my first drone. Having used the Pro 1 & 2 before, I'd of NEVER thought I'd "downgrade" to the Mini 2 and sacrifice those beautiful 10-bit & D-LOG features, but since the UK wants to suffocate us filmmakers with their new drone laws, I've had to consider a sub-250g drone like the Mini 2 to "fly under" (😆) the stricter restrictions that 500g+ drones have. Seeing this comparison has made me feel a tad bit more confident about getting it! When you said, "does it even matter how good the camera quality is as long as you're adding to the production value by flying a drone" - I felt that! Soooo true. Ugh ok, brb going to Amazon to buy this thing.
    P.S. Can we just take a second to admire the Canon A7Siii hoodie lol!

    Some ND filters for that Mini would up it’s game drastically. I have the original Mavic Mini, and a $50 set of NDs and I’ve gotten unbelievably gorgeous shots, and upscaled the 2.7k to 4K and I’m happy with the results. So the M2 coming with 4K (even though it’s compressed) is a viable option for the indie folks.

    3:20 I think the issue is with the Sport mode. Lots of reports of jerky gimbal motion and intermittent vignetting at the top of the image. The wind velocity is probably too much for the Mini's gimbal and DJI has increased the speed of the Mini2 by increasingthe pitch. Consequently the camera can sometimes see the props come into the picture.
