Thanks Jake. A great tutorial video and very interesting facts. I just bought the mini 2 and am very happy that i went for this model as it seems to do everything I need without the need for active tracking, follow me or the obstacle obstruction sensors. Reall appreciate the effort you've gone to here. Thanks mate.
Despite being someone who tends to go for the better specs when buying, I purchased the Mini 2 based on your review. Although active track might be good in some cases, the Mini 2 will do quickshots maintaining a set point in focus and frame. If you walk slowly and set enough distance you can get a simulated live track effect(works great in circling). Personally if I had the Air 2 I wouldn't be walking on a forested path relying on tracking with $1000 a few feet away from a collision with a tree branch.
Thanks Doug, I didn't have the mini 1 but I did have the mavic air 1 (which was wifi) and the difference is pretty large. Plus the stronger motors make it a pretty solid upgrade
I had the Mavic Air 1 for a few years and loved it. Unfortunately, I flew it in an "unsafe" manner, (under a bridge) and lost connection and lost the drone. I replaced it with the Mavic Air 2 and having flown it a few times it's a HUGE improvement over the original Air and would highly recommend it to anyone for a portable drone.

The deciding factor for me was FAA's Remote ID that appears to be coming online in Dec 2020. I don't know what the grace period will be, but it does not include drones under 250 grams, so it is not as much of an issue. I do have my Part 107, and once the dust settles and we know where the hobbyist pilot stands, I will decide from there. For now, at least I have a decent and capable drone that does not have the restrictions other drones will.

Looked at the RAW files in Lightroom and suprised how much cleaner the Air 2 files are. Even though they are underexposed. The noise in the sky in the Mini 2 shots is reminiscent of DSLRs from 2003. Thanks for uploading them.
You're welcome and I think that is something DJI could def improve through some updates in the future but yes I agree a slight bit noisier than the Mavic Air 2. Cheers!!
Great review. I really want the ability to "easily" track a moving vehicle (while traveling inside) so I guess the Air 2 is the best option, correct? I like/prefer the price point of the mini 2, but having auto-tracking and obstacle avoidance are probably must haves for my desired use.
I was amazed at how quiet the mini2 is, compared to my mavic2pro, which was already improved over the buzzing spark. it dramatically reduces the bother to other people around.

Very useful, thank you. One of my hiking buddies had his mini 2 up Ben Lomond (in Scotland) last weekend. He had it up and flying in no time. Easy to carry too which is significant if you are hiking the full 3000+ feet. Here in UK it is small enough not to need a licence and pass an online test. I like the extra built-in avoidance plus tracking so I may go for the Air 2. I use a DJI Pocket 2 so I am aware of the quality images and clips DJI offers. I think any ND filters etc will be compatible between the Pocket2 and the Air 2 but if anyone knows different I would be glad to know. ATB from Scotland.

Great video! I cant help but notice in the video side by sjde comparison in auto settings, the mini2 seems more vivid and the air 2 seems "blah". Is there a reason for this?
Holy crap dude. Your image in your video(s?) is so GOOD! I am just talking over all, like when you are talking to the camera. You can see you like to edit and make the overall image look good! Thank you for that!
Found your videos while trying to figure out what first DJI drone to get and have decided on the Mini 2. Subbed and loving the content as well Greetings from Scotland.
I prefer the Mini 2, I don’t need any special permit or registration, it’s only 249g. It handles great with heavy wind. I have both so I can tell. Never used again my Air 2. Nice video btw
Awesome review, I very much appreciate the insight for both drones as I’m looking to upgrade from the first mavic mini! Bit of an odd question but what kind of back pack do you have? Thanks as always and keep up the good content!
Awesome review! I liked the mini 2 review also. Picked up the mini 2 and honestly I’m blown away at how awesome it really is all around. The ease of use is what sold me! Thanks for the reviews!
Hi Jake. I love all of your videos. You taught me so much about the original Mavic mini. That was a year ago. I've now bought the new mini 2. But I can't get my drone to connect to the controller. One strange thing is. Even though it says the aircraft is not connected. I can make the gimbal pan up and down. I get no camera view. Or the rotation of the props. How can that be? Thanks Dave in the UK. Aged 70.
I’ve had that happen once and basically I had to wait until it automatically went to the drone flight screen. If yours still doesn’t work properly then maybe try and rebind it? You bind the drone by turning it on and after it had booted up push hold the power button until it beeps then follow the connect aircraft prompts in the app on the controller.
Thank you! A great comparison! I was tossed between them, but the visual differences isn't noticeable. Which would I rather have? The Air 2. But after seeing this, the Mini 2 is what I will get.
Me too! I've done that with an inspire 2 a few times as well, the fact that we have these drones that perform this well in such a small package is amazing and a back saver lol
@@lakedog3616 between these three(mini 2, phantom 3, pro 1)...the mini 2 all the way, it’s very capable, extremely light and portable, and laws at least in Europe allow me to fly nearly anywhere , even over uninvolved people.
Thank you for the great video! I'm looking at a long global backpacking trip and have never used a drone, but realized it might be a good thing to have. It was also fun to see familiar footage- I grew up skiing Hatcher and Turnagain :)
Hey, how are you getting such crisp contrast on those cabins? Does it have anything to do with midtone detail in resolve? Trying to find a solution for that in fcpx and can't seem to.
I've been watching comparison videos since I'm looking to upgrade from my Mini1 and definitely like your video the best. Thanks! I'm going to probably get the Mini2
Exactly the review I was looking for to the point and unbiased. I liked the smaller size but was worried about the camera quality. Since the Camera quality is similar for my needs, I think the mini 2 is better for me due to its smaller size and weight. Thanks for such a great review.
I’m having a heck of a time deciding what to get for my first drone. My dad has an older phantom but we never really bring it anywhere and I think that’s because of the size. Plus every time we take it out and try to use it we find out it needs an update and won’t take off unless we do the update which is annoying when the few times we ever say “hey this would be cool to get a look at with the drone” is always a last minute spur of the moment kind of thing (like once or twice a year). I’m sure the phantom isn’t the only drone that needs constant updates. It would probably help if we just used it more often and it’s not really a bad thing that dji is always putting out updates. But I’m trying to decide between getting myself a new or used mini 2, a used air 2, or a used mavic pro 1. I really like the size of the mini 2 but I can’t decide if I need tracking and obstacle avoidance. Tracking and obstacle avoidance kind of seems like the coolest thing a drone can do. But the best drone is the one you actually bring with you and I’m afraid anything other than a mini 2 might take up too much space in a backpack. I just really wish the mini 2 could at least track me even without obstacle avoidance.
Thank you for the comparison video! Why does the default color of the Mavic Air 2 look much warmer than the Mini 2? Is that normal? Is it adjustable? Which one more closely resembles actual real world colors?
If you already own the Mavic 2 Pro then I would get the mini 2 as an alternative. The air 2 is great but most of what it does your Mavic 2 Pro can already do. The portability of the Mini 2 really makes it nice! Cheers
Thank you for the great content! I'm thinking about which one to buy now. I know I LOVE the size and weight of the Mini 2, as well as its ability to be recharged using power banks. But as I will use the drone by far more for photo than for video, so the fact that the Mini 2 will give only 12mp photos leaves me in the very tough position to make a decision.
I personally went with the mini 2 since I own the Mavic 2 pro already I enjoy the mini because its easier to get out and launch quick compared to the pro that and less weight in my bag also ill use the mini for my run and gun stuff and the pro 2 for the time-lapse and more pro look. Great video man seems like both drones are good but I'm sitting in the right spot for the 2 I have.
Agreed! Thats where I have settled too. The mini 2 is such a great portable drone while the M2P really has great quality in a small package. I do look forward to seeing what the Mavic 3 Pro brings!
Great comparison. How long does it take to charge three batteries through battery-pack or AC outlets. What size battery in the controller and how long does that one last? Can you fly and charge the remote at the same time? I greatly appreciate it.
It takes about 1 hr per battery either way for both drones. The battery in the controller is huge 5000mah I believe and lasts a very long time 6-8 batteries worth of flying or more. you can fly and charge the remote at the same time as well. Cheers!
very true. I really like gloves from HEAD, I take smaller thin gloves with touch screen finger tips for flying and then I have the bigger thicker gloves as well
Ugh 2:15 into the video you've already helped me make a decision against buying a DJI still. They _still_ haven't fixed the tilt/pan jitter in the video, so all the video footage is virtually useless. Panning/rotating shots are almost painful to look at because they're so jittery. By 4:08 I'm convinced; DJI still has a long way to go.
Have you tested it out in a warmer climate yet? I'm from South Africa and temperatures in the area I'm in sometimes go up to 40 degrees Celsius. I've had my dslr shutdown on me from over heating. Would really like to know how these 2 drones handle the heat.
Great video. I have mavic air 2 and was thinking of a secondary drone under 249g so thinking of mini 2. Your video has helped me decide on adding a mini 2. By the way, notice you hand launch all the time and hand catch rather than using landing pads. Is hand launch and catch a good skill to learn and how easy is it to do properly?
Hey jake awsmmmmmm video... in india I can’t fly the mini 2 beyond 15 mtrs vertically as it is restricted however other drones are not restricted so far...you think I should switch to air 2 or it is o ly a matter of time all the drones will be restricted??Thanks and stay blessed
Hi looking for a drone to look at jobs on roofs. What would you recommend. I would not use it every day. It would just be to look at items on roofs with out going up there because some are so steep.
Great vid, I have the air 2 and cannot get clean footage out of it like I see on TH-cam. I use it in 4K and when played back on the Mac it just doesn’t look that great. I’ve always had this rouble with Dji drones. Maybe I’m expecting too much
@@JakeSloan I’ve tired all the 4K modes and frame rates in normal and d-cine. Video looks fine when the drones just hovering but when it moves I get a slightly fuzzy look. I had the same issue with my mavic air and mavic pro. Ironically I had no issue with the old phantom 4. Anyway, keep up the good vids and it looks beautiful where you are. Bit different from the UK where I am.✌️
I learned a great deal from this video. The only thing I could not determine was the noise difference between the two (for part of the sound comparison, the Mini 2 was running at the same time as the Air 2). How would you describe the noise difference between the two drones? Thanks!
it's very close, while the mini 2 is slightly quieter it has a little bit softer sound and higher pitch. The air 2 is a touch louder with a lower pitch
Hi Jake, I notice this video was from Nov of 2020 so it may have changed a bit since then. I just ordered a couple of the Mavic Air 2. In your video, you say it does not have obstacle avoidance except for in the front. The listing shows this: Mavic Air 2 perceives its environment in three directions: forward, backward, and downward. Is it possible they have changed over the last several months?

I kind of dig the fact the mini is so inexpensive and I am willing to fly it in colder weather for a shot due to that. It has legit impressed me though for the money!
Great comparison of both drones at the TH-cam Studio - Alaska!
LOL thanks Eddie! I'm holding out hope that Gerald Undone will come do a studio tour with me someday, but I will admit, it's going to be difficult finding a purple glacier ice cave...
Great video! I cant help but notice in the video side by sjde comparison in auto settings, the mini2 seems more vivid and the air 2 seems "blah". Is there a reason for this?
just different sensors and slightly different color sciences they can be made to match by adjusting white balance
Thank you for the explanation of the Mavic Mini 2 Air 2
You're welcome!
Holy crap dude. Your image in your video(s?) is so GOOD! I am just talking over all, like when you are talking to the camera. You can see you like to edit and make the overall image look good! Thank you for that!
Thank you very much!
Sorry, what were you saying? I was distracted by the scenery... AND your backwards flying skills!
ROFL I need to find more boring places to shoot and apparently not fly backward through anything anymore...
Found your videos while trying to figure out what first DJI drone to get and have decided on the Mini 2. Subbed and loving the content as well Greetings from Scotland.
Thanks a lot! Cheers
Amazingly well done review. Thank you so much. Excellent work.
Much appreciated! Cheers
looking at getting a mini. This info helped. Impressed it's operating in 10 degree weather. Why does the mini 2 have a blue tint? Is that adjustable?
Nice!! It is adjustable by setting your white balance
Hi, great review of both drones! How long does it take to the charger to charge the battery?
About 1 hr for each
I prefer the Mini 2, I don’t need any special permit or registration, it’s only 249g. It handles great with heavy wind. I have both so I can tell. Never used again my Air 2. Nice video btw
Nice
Awesome review, I very much appreciate the insight for both drones as I’m looking to upgrade from the first mavic mini! Bit of an odd question but what kind of back pack do you have? Thanks as always and keep up the good content!
This is my favorite backpack: geni.us/qY2LJ
Awesome review! I liked the mini 2 review also. Picked up the mini 2 and honestly I’m blown away at how awesome it really is all around.
The ease of use is what sold me!
Thanks for the reviews!
You're welcome!! Glad you are enjoying it
Amazing content 👌🏻♥️
LOVE FROM INDIA ♥️♥️
Cheers!
This was extremely helpful. I was between the two but for what I want to do the tracking is a must. Completely didn’t know the mini didn’t have it
Glad to hear it helped you!!
My pocket will most likely approve for Mini 2 'cause it fits more literally and figuratively🤷
LOL both great points! don't underestimate what the mini 2 can do though.
You already have more snow than I do. Lol
LOL it doesn't take long up in this area!
Thank you! A great comparison! I was tossed between them, but the visual differences isn't noticeable. Which would I rather have? The Air 2. But after seeing this, the Mini 2 is what I will get.
Brilliant glad I could help!
there was a time I would pack my phantom 3 with extra two batteries and accessories and go 15-20 hiking.
Me too! I've done that with an inspire 2 a few times as well, the fact that we have these drones that perform this well in such a small package is amazing and a back saver lol
Do you prefer the phantom 3 over the mavic or mini 2 ? thanks
@@lakedog3616 between these three(mini 2, phantom 3, pro 1)...the mini 2 all the way, it’s very capable, extremely light and portable, and laws at least in Europe allow me to fly nearly anywhere , even over uninvolved people.
Literally going to be going to Hatcher's Pass in a couple of weeks and I'm normally in the lower 48. What a small world.
Sweet!!
@@JakeSloan Did my cousins wedding video there with the Mavic Mini at golden hour. It was epic.
Ordered the mini 2!!
awesome!
Thank you for the great video! I'm looking at a long global backpacking trip and have never used a drone, but realized it might be a good thing to have. It was also fun to see familiar footage- I grew up skiing Hatcher and Turnagain :)
Glad it was helpful and awesome!!
My heart and my budget says Mini 2😅
LOL well its a fantastic drone for the price don't underestimate it. Cheers
Mavic pro is the only one to consider in fainess. The other ones are rubbish, well apart from air but that 8bit no log
@@petrub27 u say mini 2 is rubbish?
@@aces3261 too light, yes it's rubbish

Just upgraded from my Spark to a Mini 2 and am very pleased with how much better/faster/longer this bird flies!
Fantastic!
Air 2 for me!
Excellent glad I could help you decide.
Hey, how are you getting such crisp contrast on those cabins? Does it have anything to do with midtone detail in resolve? Trying to find a solution for that in fcpx and can't seem to.
I can't remember off the top of my head but I did play with the exposure controls, lowered the shadows a bit boosted the midtowns and highlights a bit
Fantastic comparison 👍🏽
Thank you very much!
I've been watching comparison videos since I'm looking to upgrade from my Mini1 and definitely like your video the best. Thanks! I'm going to probably get the Mini2
definitley get the mini2, it is more practical, it is affordable, and it is sooooo good. It is by far better than the mavic air 2
Thank you so much!!
Exactly the review I was looking for to the point and unbiased. I liked the smaller size but was worried about the camera quality. Since the Camera quality is similar for my needs, I think the mini 2 is better for me due to its smaller size and weight. Thanks for such a great review.
You're welcome! Cheers
I just really wish the mini 2 could at least track me even without obstacle avoidance.
agreed I wish they would add tracking to the mini 2
Love the travel emphasis for the DJI mini 2
Me too!!!
Thank you for the comparison video! Why does the default color of the Mavic Air 2 look much warmer than the Mini 2? Is that normal? Is it adjustable? Which one more closely resembles actual real world colors?
The mini 2 does and yes the mavic air is adjustable. I was quite shocked at the difference as well
Noticed this too
I owe a Mavic 2 pro....as a second drone...if you have only one choice....would go with the mini 2 or the Air 2 ???
If you already own the Mavic 2 Pro then I would get the mini 2 as an alternative. The air 2 is great but most of what it does your Mavic 2 Pro can already do. The portability of the Mini 2 really makes it nice! Cheers
I agree with Jake it honestly seems like the best pair
If you already have MP2 the choice is obvious, you need a smaller more accessible drone, but to be honest, Mavic Mini 2 is all you need...
I wish I have that drone too so I can continue my aerial vlog.. By the way nice view 👍🏼😍
Thank you I hope you get one!
Thank you for the great content! I'm thinking about which one to buy now. I know I LOVE the size and weight of the Mini 2, as well as its ability to be recharged using power banks. But as I will use the drone by far more for photo than for video, so the fact that the Mini 2 will give only 12mp photos leaves me in the very tough position to make a decision.
there are a lot of great choices out there for drone creators now!
I'm buying the mini 2. As soon as I receive my $1400 stimulus check.
Nice!
Me too!
@@jovanypantaleon Not buying the fly more combo, just one extra.
Great comparison. For a professional means, og mavic air or mini 2? Transmission vs obstacle avoidance?
Mini 2 I think looks better image wise
I personally went with the mini 2 since I own the Mavic 2 pro already I enjoy the mini because its easier to get out and launch quick compared to the pro that and less weight in my bag also ill use the mini for my run and gun stuff and the pro 2 for the time-lapse and more pro look. Great video man seems like both drones are good but I'm sitting in the right spot for the 2 I have.
Agreed! Thats where I have settled too. The mini 2 is such a great portable drone while the M2P really has great quality in a small package. I do look forward to seeing what the Mavic 3 Pro brings!
@@JakeSloan yea same I hope they gimme a bit though gotta fill the piggy bank back up lol 😂
Lol you and me both!!
I keep silica gels in my drone case after a fly in the winter to remove water or frost when it gets to room temp.
great idea!
Me Watching In 4k On A 1080p Monitor 👁👄👁
lol
Great comparison. How long does it take to charge three batteries through battery-pack or AC outlets. What size battery in the controller and how long does that one last? Can you fly and charge the remote at the same time? I greatly appreciate it.
It takes about 1 hr per battery either way for both drones. The battery in the controller is huge 5000mah I believe and lasts a very long time 6-8 batteries worth of flying or more. you can fly and charge the remote at the same time as well. Cheers!
My first done is a Mimi 2 still waiting for it to turn up.
Nice!
What’s your preferred cold weather flying gloves ? Cold handed flying is not as fun. Thx
very true. I really like gloves from HEAD, I take smaller thin gloves with touch screen finger tips for flying and then I have the bigger thicker gloves as well
Thanks for the comparison of the two drone models and braving the cold. It is beautiful tho up there in Alaska.
It is incredibly beautiful!
great video thanks. BTW, WHATS YOUR MAIN CAMERA PLEASE?
for this video and most videos I use the A7sIII as my main camera
@@JakeSloan Thanks for the response 👍
Ugh 2:15 into the video you've already helped me make a decision against buying a DJI still. They _still_ haven't fixed the tilt/pan jitter in the video, so all the video footage is virtually useless. Panning/rotating shots are almost painful to look at because they're so jittery. By 4:08 I'm convinced; DJI still has a long way to go.
glad I could help you decide
Have you tested it out in a warmer climate yet? I'm from South Africa and temperatures in the area I'm in sometimes go up to 40 degrees Celsius. I've had my dslr shutdown on me from over heating. Would really like to know how these 2 drones handle the heat.
I have not since I don't live in a hot climate but I know people who have and they have worked as far as I know
Great video.
It does certainly help in many situations. I made a video on how to do it and practice it safely: th-cam.com/video/Q4d51RHIrCo/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for that Jake and will check your video link out now my friend. Thanks again for that Brother 👍👍
Hey jake awsmmmmmm video... in india I can’t fly the mini 2 beyond 15 mtrs vertically as it is restricted however other drones are not restricted so far...you think I should switch to air 2 or it is o ly a matter of time all the drones will be restricted??Thanks and stay blessed
does it have good solid GPS signal? if not that will restrict it to what you describe.
@@JakeSloan it’s the Indian government rule that nano catogary crafts can’t fly above 15 mtrs
Hi looking for a drone to look at jobs on roofs. What would you recommend. I would not use it every day. It would just be to look at items on roofs with out going up there because some are so steep.
Either will work but the added help of obstacle avoidance is nice to have on the air 2
Great vid, I have the air 2 and cannot get clean footage out of it like I see on TH-cam. I use it in 4K and when played back on the Mac it just doesn’t look that great. I’ve always had this rouble with Dji drones. Maybe I’m expecting too much
Really? I haven’t had issue like that. What modes are you shooting in?
@@JakeSloan I’ve tired all the 4K modes and frame rates in normal and d-cine. Video looks fine when the drones just hovering but when it moves I get a slightly fuzzy look. I had the same issue with my mavic air and mavic pro. Ironically I had no issue with the old phantom 4. Anyway, keep up the good vids and it looks beautiful where you are. Bit different from the UK where I am.✌️
@@pudsboi5203 I'm in the UK, every video I watch on you tube looks better than where I am, I feel your pain.
are you certain you're watching the fully downloaded video file and not the cached version?
@@ThoCho21 yes, but thanks for the reply.
The listing shows this:
Mavic Air 2 perceives its environment in three directions: forward, backward, and downward. Is it possible they have changed over the last several months?
No you are correct it does have forward backward and downward sensors.
very helpful vlog! thank you. leaning toward the Mavic 2 after your great shared info!
Glad it was helpful!
This may sound stupid, but is there a chance down the road, for a simple software update that will allow for follow me mode on the mini 2?
no update but there is a 3rd part app now that will allow tracking. Look up Litchi
@@JakeSloan I’ll have a look.Thxs man.
Alot of comments saying how the mini being smaller makes it easier to be portable. Is it that big of a difference?
it is a fairly large difference. especially when you add more batteries
