Kia 3.8L Modified Head Bolt Thread Insert Repair: Measure Twice, Order Once

  • In the previous segment 3.8L you witnessed me step into the trap and strip the aluminum block head bolt threads. Weather, time, and not being able to remember at the time where I put all my precision measuring instruments in another tool bag for a remote job, I hurriedly ordered an insert kit with un verified information.
I was trying to be proactive so that when my schedule and the weather worked out, I'd have new tools and bolts. Well, the existing untreaded hole was bigger than I thought from info I came across and I just don't think the inserts I got have enough bite into the block and will have to get on the phone again to see what I can find.

Hi. It's a 3.8L. Thanks for asking as I didn't have that in the title and description of this particular video of the multi part series as I ran out of room in the title. There's 8 parts so was hoping folks would have watched the earlier videos and followed it along. I just edited the title so that's now in there, and also in the description.
This was an experiment as the approved method requires spending $400 -$600 on a single use steel insert kit that I just didn't want to spend on a 2006 Kia with 250,000 miles. Bottom line is: THIS WON"T WORK. DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!
If you watch the subsequent videos you'll see how and why and I make it a point to stress that. The available inserts from any mfgr just won't hold with the size of the existing hole and drilling it out to a bigger size is not an option as the water jacket is so thin.
I'm going to go with the approved method using the Huhn Solutions Kit which is just over $400. I like their kit better than the Time Sert Kit which for this engine is over $500, closer to $600. I back burnered this project for the Winter, but will be working on it soon.
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
