    I'm installing an Alpha One, Gen One sterndrive on a Mercruiser 260/Chevy 350 engine. This is on Big Blue- my 1984 Ranger 395-V I/o (inboard/outboard). The sterndrive combines inboard power with outboard drive. The sterndrive sits outside the hull. I've been doing a lot of restoration work on this boat and this is a continuation of that. Please see my other Mercruiser 260 TH-cams in this playlist:

    When I've installed my drive I've had to hold the prop shaft while in forward gear or else the shift shaft would rotate out of forward gear.

    what am i doing wrong, the drive goes in almost all the way and stop about one inch short of fully mating up. I've checked alignment and made sure the spline pocket is not over greased. Thanks

      Make sure that your shifter is still in the forward position and also check to make sure that the lower unit is still shifted into forward as well.

    Can the large o-ring on the U-joint housing be put inside of the housing instead of onto the lower unit? The o-ring that came with my bellows kit seems to be too large and won't stay on there. I got the stern drive nearly all the way back on, but can't get the last cm or so. I think that seal might be bunching up in there. I thought about trying to grease it and put it inside of the u-joint housing and then sliding the stern drive through.

      Yes, you can do it that way as well- install the large O ring in the housing and you could use some weatherstrip adhesive to keep it in place in the housing on the outer edge. You could also put some grease on the inside to help it slide together.

    I have a question about the trim cylinder lines on my port side the lines are opposite of yours. The motor is slow to go up and down are those lines connected incorrectly?

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  ปีที่แล้ว

      On my Alpha One Gen One, the front line goes to the front port of the cylinder and the rear line goes to the rear port of the cylinder.

      @@ProWrenching do you know if there is any way to mount the trim cylinders with the external long lines in place of these. My cylinder is leaking and trying to find a replacement has been a nightmare

    Quick question. At the 30 sec Mark you point to a seal you replaced. Is that a large O ring rubberband looking gasket that fits over the joint housing? I think I forgot to put that one on...😅

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes- that is the large O ring that fits over the joint housing.

      Isn’t there a sequence for the shifter in that process?

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@brianwallace1803 yes- the shifter needs to be in forward gear and the stern drive needs to be shifted into forward gear when you install it. That way you can rotate the propller shaft to line up the drive shaft splines when you install it.

      @@ProWrenchinghi. Can you shift the stern into forward gear with your hand?? Mine won’t move. Thanks.

    No Retainer Ring ?

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  ปีที่แล้ว

      The Alpha 1 Gen1’s don’t have a retainer ring. Gen 2 does.
