    Continuing with this bass boat restoration- I'm installing trim limit/sender switches on a Mercruiser 260/Chevy 350 stern drive on my Ranger 395-V I/o bass boat. A trim limit switch is a safety device which keeps the driver from over-trimming the drive. The trim sender switch is used to send a signal to the trim gauge as a visual cue to what your trim is set at. Please like and subscribe to receive notification of future videos! See the comments for pictures of the wiring on my boat.
    Sender explanation starts at 4:45 in the video

    Good morning on the 23rd. I am recouping from my second stroke. This is my project. I’ve never done or tackled or used this type of boat before so I’m gonna use your brain in your information immensely now I have to work on the pump motor itself. I see that it has two burner relays on it so now we’re gonna get this trim working correctly, and this is definitely a project boat. Can’t say enough good things about these videos.

    Mine does not have a gauge (I will be adding one though). The wires instead went to a plastic block at rear of engine and connected into the ignition wiring. Could I assume they had it wired so the engine wouldn't start with the drive up? I didn't matter either way as the wires were broken off at the sender.

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      On my boat- the trim limit switch is set to limit the amount of trim available at the trim switch on the throttle. The sender switch is just a position switch that goes to the gauge. I haven’t heard of the sender switch being used to limit starting. You don’t want to start the engine when it’s trimmed up in the trailer position, so I suppose it’s maybe plausible that could have been for that reason.

    Came across this video and tried to apply it to my Alpha One. Unfortunately, it didn't put my gauge "back to work." It appears that I'll need a new gauge which I'll likely defer until next year as the drive is operating fine. Thanks for posting. Very helpful.

      If everything is working, but just moving slower, i wonder if you may be having an issue with your hydraulic pump. I would check the fluid levels and make sure the battery cables that are connected to the pump are not corroded and have a good connection to the battery.

    • @ProWrenching

      There is one grease fitting that is on the steering assembly that is inside where the motor is. Some couplers have a grease- zert and others do not . Mine does not and you just have to put grease in the splines of the coupler by hand once a year when you do the annual service.

    Hi There! I have an Alpha 1 Gen 1 stern drive as well which was my grandfathers and I think he had the trim limit removed or set to very high because we dock the boat in very shallow water. I recently had the gimbal bearing replaced and they also ran new wiring for the trim limit and sender switch because the gauge had stopped working, but the trim still worked. Only thing now is that the trim limit using the trim button is not high enough, and I am have to use the trailer button (which is very hard to press) to get the prop up high enough. Can I simply loosen the portside screws on the trim limiter and turn it so that the limit will go as high or very close to the highest it would go using the trailer button? Appreciate your help in advance!

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would double check your trim limit measurement to make sure that it’s at the recommended 21 and three-quarter inches max limit for trim up.. It is not recommended operating the boat above that measurement.

    My dad has an alpha 1, gen 1. The port side is currently affecting the trim guage and starboard has no impact. I assume that would imply the wires are switched? In your video, you aligned the marks on port & loosely attached. Then raised until 21 & 3/4. But you didn't seem to indicate how you adjusted the port sender before tightening it down. What did we miss? Our boat does not have a trailer switch. Three buttons, middle + top raises, bottom lowers. Middle + bottom lowers, middle only does nothing. Does that imply incorrect wiring as well? Is middle + top button the equivalent of trailer switch & middle button not currently working, the actual trim switch we should be using to adjust?

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The port side is the trim limit switch. The idea is that you shouldn’t be able to trim the motor higher than the the limit measured amount and you adjust that switch to be within those limits. The starboard side should go to the gauge that is on the dash and you adjust that switch to correspond with the gauge reading that is on the dash. It sounds like your boat has the wires mixed up.

    I recently purchased a old 88 sea ray. Trim goes down from the switch on the shifter. It will not come back up. I have to use the trailer up button. Also my trim gauge needle don’t move to indicate position. Where should I start to troubleshoot? I was told it could be a bad relay on the trim pump? It don’t do anything nor make any noise when trim up on the shifter. Any help would be appreciated. Enjoy your channel. Subscribed.

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      First off, thanks for subscribing. I appreciate you watching the channel. My boat did the same thing- it would trim down from the switch on the shifter but would only trim up with the trailer switch. That is what it will do if the trim limit switch or wiring is bad. On my boat, the wiring was deteriorated going to both the trim and limit senders. I had to replace both trim limit and sender switch to get them to function correctly.
      To start, I would look at the wiring and bullet connectors for corrosion going to the trim limit switch, check the adjustment on the trim limit switch. The trim sender switch controls gauge needle and is most likely defective, but could be out of adjustment too.

You need to have it set up so when you’re using your trim up button, it doesn’t go past the max length for your unit. You just have to play with the limit sender adjustment until it is correct.

    He never says how to adjust the switch. What way do you turn the switch to set trim limit.

      @ProWrenching  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After the switch is aligned and installed, you first rotate the switch clockwise until it stops and then you rotate counterclockwise until you get the correct measurement.

    What makes my boat wanna stand straight up?

      Sounds like you may have the lower unit trimmed too high during takeoff. After the initial rise, does it get on plane?

    • @brianweaver1541
      @brianweaver1541 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it will plane out after it gets going.also I've recently changed the gear oil in unit bled the trim pump.i noticed a vibration that is affected by speed and trim.and my exhaust bellow tore in half got one coming but what will be damaged by that

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brianweaver1541 It sounds like you need to remove the lower unit and check the drive shaft bellow and gimbal bearing to make sure water has not entered it and caused damage to the drive shaft joints or gimbal bearing. It’s recommended to remove that annually and inspect it.

      A tear in the exhaust shouldn’t damage anything- will just cause your exhaust to be louder.

      Ok if its trimmed to high.im guessing that trim sender on the side will need changed.i know it won't come off w out destroying it.and if thats the case trimming it lower will make it run flatter and probly pull tubes and boards better?as far as the the main switch on dash its going down as far as it can..but the gage doesn't show up or down so in t he water I put it down as far as it can and guess on the way up.and last question and I'll stop bugging you.what's is the hose on rear starbird.it looks like a vacuum hose that runs straight down to a plastic piece that fits in a slot kinda hangs underneath as well

    You totally skipped how to turn to adjust which way and where to start at and clockwise or counter clockwise?

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the trim position sender installation, place stern drive down in full down position. Turn the center rotor of trim position sender to align index mark with index mark on sender body. Turn the ignition to the on position. Then you would rotate the sender either clockwise or counter clockwise until the needle of the trim gauge is at the bottom of the arc then tighten your screws and recheck the gauge.
      For the trim limit installation align your index marks on the switch then install the limit switch then loosen the screws and turn the trim limit switch clockwise to the end of slots place the drive in the full down position. Trim drive up do not use the trailer switch. Slowly turn trim limit switch counter clockwise until trim cylinders extend to 21 and three-quarter inches.
