    Continuing with my bass boat restoration- I'm replacing the water pump on my Mercruiser 260/Chevy 350 engine on my Ranger 395V I/o bass boat. The water pump wasn't working like it should. I disassembled it and saw melted plastic- a sure sign that a previous operator ran the engine too long out of the water. I'll show you how I replaced it using a kit I bought online. Thanks for watching and please like and subscribe!

    Its easier to put the water impeller on first especially with key lineup, then put on the housing. Thats the correct way its done in service school. Why struggle?

    Dont ya just love having all those extra gaskets and seals left over not being used. When I did this for the first time a few weeks backs, I had the deer in headlights look and thinking oh no, I've done something wrong lol. But I ran my boat this weekend at a local lake all day friday and Saturday. My water temp on the gauge never went over 145 degrees. I also changed out my thermostat and installed all brand new cooling hoses. My old thermostat housing had so much rust in it, the ports that feeds cool water to the manifold risers were almost entirely blocked up. I put my thermostat housing in a grit blaster at my work, stripped it completely. Primered and painted it up to look new. Got all of the caked rust out of the inside of it. This old 88 sea ray I bought back in June. I was pretty disappointed at the lack of care and maintenance the previous owner did or didnt do on the boat. I'm attention to detail. Now I've just got to replace all gaskets. Timing chain cover gasket, valve cover gaskets, intake gasket. I have a feeling they are all old and possibly original gaskets. The block has caked oil in some of those areas. But I know me, I'll have to replace the timing chain and gears since tearing into the timing chain cover. 4.3L GM motor.

      Yes - I know what you mean, it’s always better if they give you only and exactly what you need in the repair kit so there aren’t any questions after you’re finished. Glad to hear that your boat is running well and staying cool out there on the water after your repair. And it’s nice to have access to those good tools at work to get things cleaned up like removing the rust from your thermostat housing. I know what you mean about buying a neglected boat,but it sure gives a sense of satisfaction when knowing all the hard work doing the repairs allows you to come back to the dock without being on the wrong end of a tow rope.

      @larrywalden626 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ProWrenching Definitely. It did feel good after 2 full days out in the water and no breakdowns. Everything ran smooth. Only 2 issues I’ve found over the 2 days is the gas gauge don’t go all the to full, stays at 3/4 full after filling up, once the level gets below that the gauge then drops with the level as it should. The second issue is at times at no wake areas, when I stop to back up or forward from neutral position, it dies, and sometimes don’t want to fire. Turns over but won’t fire. I’m thinking that kill switch back by the throttle cables is sticking sometimes. It will fire up after moving the throttle back and forth in and out of gear.

    • @larrywalden626
      @larrywalden626 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ProWrenching on a more positive note, despite it being the original motor, and unknown amount of hours on it, it does have great oil pressure. Well, assuming the oil pressure gauge is reading correctly. When cruising pressure is up over 60 psi.

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@larrywalden626 Sounds like you have good oil pressure & a solid motor and with two full days on the water, sounds like you only have a couple of small bugs to work out. I do have a video on the fuel gauge sending unit and a video on upgrading a shift plate that shows some cable adjustments in there that you may find useful.

    Thank you for this post, love the strap idea when doing this by myself. So I followed your guidelines and got everything apart and back together. I had a hard time getting the lower unit back on, but I eventually did. However, after I got it all buttoned up oil back in I went to start it up with the muffs and My shifter would not move back to neutral. So, I must have done something wrong with gear spline/shift cable when putting it back on. Shifter was in full forward position during the entire time and I do not recall moving the shifting spline at all. Now I'm stuck. Any suggestions, I'm probably going to have to pull the lower unit off again tomorrow and start over??

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It sounds like that even though the shifter was in forward gear, the lower unit itself was not in forward gear position. You’ll need to drain the oil (I would save it in a clean container to re-use since its new oil). Then lower the unit enough so that you can shift the lower unit by rotating the shift shaft so that it is in forward gear when you reinstall it. You can test whether or not you’re in gear by rotating the propeller on the outdrive. After you bolt it up, before you put your oil back in, you’ll want to test that it shifts in forward & reverse. When in neutral position, youll be able to spin the propeller freely on the outdrive.

    Great video, do you have any information on where the pipe from the lower portion, goes into the upper portion? Mine also go hot and melted that also. I can’t find anything on that on the internet. Thanks

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The water pump connects to a pipe in the upper portion of the stern drive which goes through the gimbal through a hose and then passes through the transom to the motor. Hope that helps.

    With the entire drive unit on the bench should I be able to shift the lever by hand mine won’t move. I replaced the water pump impeller and put the upper and lower back together but the propeller turns freely. I also cannot move the shift lever by hand. It is in the forward position though. I thought the propeller should click when turning it clockwise?? Luv your videos!! ✌️

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you may have had your lower unit shifted into reverse instead of into drive. You’re just gonna need to lower the lower unit and use your hands to turn the spline shift rod on the lower unit so it is in forward gear and you may have to hold it in place by holding the propeller, and then reinstall making sure that your boat is shifted into forward gear.

    Under the plastic water tube is there a o ring, washer or bushing of any kind required? Also is there any rubber parts required on the copper water supply tube that goes upwards from the plastic tube? Thanks for your info!! Mel

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  ปีที่แล้ว

      Mel - in the water pump housing, there is a rubber seal underneath the plastic tube that seals the copper pipe. There’s also a rubber seal on the upper unit of the drive that seals the copper pipe.

    • @mellow-2
      @mellow-2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ProWrenching Thanks so much for the info -I found a rubber seal with my kit that is about 3/4 inch long and it fits snug into the top of the water pump housing hole. So I guess this is the rubber seal you were talking about. I don't see the rubber seal you mentioned for the upper unit of the drive that seals the copper pipe but the pipe fits in there tight so hopefully I'm good to put it back on. Since I'm replacing a lot of parts on my 86 Mercrusier Alpha one gen one, your videos have really been a blessing. Again thank you so much for taking the time to do the videos and also for helping this aging rookie wrench!!!

    • @mellow-2
      @mellow-2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That seal I mentioned that came with the kit only bottoms out but only allows the copper tube to sit on top of the seal that goes into the top part of the water pump housing-- too tight to insert copper tube into seal. Hopefully this is ok or else I need to head to a dealer for a part. Thanks again! Mel

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Mel- really appreciate the Super Thanks! Thank you! The copper tube should be able to fully insert inside the seal of the water pump housing. If you purchase a new upper half of the water pump housing, it will come with a new seal pre- installed. Thanks for watching!

    • @mellow-2
      @mellow-2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After installing a new water pump and water pocket part that had overheated I am having issues reconnecting the lower with the upper on my 86 alpha and gen one Mercruiser. I saw on your video that you installed the lower with the outdrive all the way down or so it seemed. Mine is lifted some maybe I should drop it down. I have all the studs lined and slightly thru the upper part and the throttle is in forward. I checked the lower unit to make sure it too was in forward by trying to turn the prop shaft to the left and it would not turn but would turn to the right. I assume this means both throttle and prop shaft are both in forward. Even so it appears that when I turn the prop to the right that the vertical shaft does not turn with it. I'm about two inches or so from mating the two parts. Any advice?!?

  • @joeguerrier7975
    @joeguerrier7975 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do you think its easier to attach the lower and upper together, then attach to boat? Or attach the upper to the boat, than attach the lower?

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my opinion, it’s easier to attach the lower to the upper and install the entire stern drive assembly all at once. I also have a video on installing the stern drive, if you want to reference that.

    Hi, installed the waterpump rebuild kit. Struggled to reinstall lower drive then it suddenly went. now the drive clicks pretty loudly in forward and reverse in the free directions (when prop turned CCW in forward gear it locks and turns CW, but has popping over a gear or something. 6 pops per prop revolution). Neutral spins freely both directions. Reverse is opposite but same noise as forward.
