  • This video may be similar for 1987 to 1996 ford f150 pickups and broncos. There is a sister video of changing ball joints on my channel. Removing the e-clip for the inner passenger side axle can be seen on my Dana 44 Spartan Locker install video.

Thank you sir, for these vids. I've got a 93 just about to turn 200k. Slowly but surely getting the front end back to snuff. Sure enough after the new axle bushings and tie rods, it isolated the ball joints. Looks like I've got a full weekend date with the old girl.

The 87 had an easy to work on hub/brake system. Only Ford made the 4X4 hubs for it. I have an 87 and used it for years. When making my Bronco a prerunner and more performance and strong I changed gear ratio for 35" tires and added lockers. Impressed with them I was going up a sand hill. I thought it did good as it could and it went up great. BUT IT STOPPED GOING UP BECAUSE BOTH HUBS SHATTERED AND I ONLY HAD REAR WHEEL DRIVE. The engine was still stock power. I converted the hub/brake stuff to the hubs Warn and others sold. I plated and gusseted my cut and turned 4" lift with LONG chromoly heim joint mounted radius arms. I put in the F250 swing axle U joint and chromoly front axles. Much longer King Shocks all cycled and strapped at 17" of 4x4 travel. The Raptor has 13" of front travel. It is so amazing and I have had 4x4 trucks always and put the best lift kits off road shops like 4 wheel parts sold. Disco kits with disco Rancho shocks LOL. Not this.. th-cam.com/video/OIYPKwUbzNE/w-d-xo.html

Thanks for the video. FWIW, there is not a missing part where the axle seal sits. Mine is smooth, shiny, and not pitted. An alternate method for removing the spindle that I've used in to replace the nut on the end and (carefully!) tap with a heaving (2 lb) hammer on the flat of the nut, alternating from side to side. It will soon loosen enough to come out.

In the event that you have oversize tires on your jeep. have someone turn the steering wheel to the extreme in both directions and look to insure the wheels are not touching ( rubbing against ) the rest of the Jeep when the wheels are turned all the way left and right. Smaller tires may be the answer. There are other options, but this is the easiest and fastest . Best of Luck

The u-joints are different from the front drive axle, MOOG sells U-Joints with needle injection grease fitting. It has to be installed after the u-joint goes through the Spindle mounting hole. The drive shafts u-joints won't fit the front drive axles unless you grind and file the u-joints. I would not recommend

It's too bad they don't make something to go over that pitted part where the seal rides. I guess you just have to grease the seal up and hope for the best if you don't have a lathe. My old Chevy was all pitted like that. That seal will probably last at least a few years if you have manual hubs and don't use 4wd that often.

Oldsmob455, thanks so much for a great... I mean GREAT video.
Properly edited so we don't have to spend 20 minutes watching you wire wheel those nuts and another 15 minutes deburring... Great job.
Question if you can... are all of these trucks basically the same ? I've got a 94 F150 XLT and there were NO snap rings on the end of the drive shaft when you first take the cover off. Is this an issue ? Seems to me it would pretty important to keep the axle in place... mine slides in and out slightly and has side to side play as well.
My first time into a four wheel drive... lots of other wrenching experience, including diesel truck shop, just no 4x4 work to date yet.
    Thanks in advance.

I see all these videos of the driver side 4x4 u-joint being replaced. I can't find one for the passenger side. Mine has 2 U-joints and the axle doesn't come out like the driver side. Haynes book shows that the Pig has a "C" clip that retains the Axle inside. I can't think for the whatever reason why the passenger side would be different. Any help or websites on how to get this done?

  • @philmcafee6940
    @philmcafee6940 12 ปีที่แล้ว

The pumpkin is not hooked up either. The axles are loose where they go into the spindle. When I hit a bump the catch on something and make a loud clanking noise. If I could follow your video and just remove them think the noise would quit. Like I said I am not using the 4 wheel drive stuff at all. Just trying to stop the knocking and worried that they may catch on something and break something else. If I take them out it will leave a hole in the back of the wheel area.

1st excellent video now 2nd the hard ? do you know is this the same for a 1987 full size Bronco with the High Hat manual locking hubs (only made in 1987 & 1st 1/2 of 1988) if so I know the bearings in the rotor are different but is the U-Joint the same. No one seems to know anything about my front end including 4WheelParts the off road shop that makes Pro Comp parts. Hell if I can just pull that axle end out, I can do this easy but no one knows how to get me the correct U-Joint

Can bad front axle ujoints cause the steering to wander? All of a sudden when I turn left or right the steering wheel doesn't want to come back to center and then over steers the opposite direction when I bring it back manually.

+Ohio Digger No, It wouldn't be your u joints. Could be a bad ball joint, bad/loose wheel bearings, or something in the steering linkage.

Actually it did end up being both front axle you joints on my '89 F250 4WD. They were completely froze up. I couldn't even knock them back and forth with a 3lb sledge hammer after getting the axle shafts out. Most of the needle bearings were dust lol. I think one had been bad but once the other froze up it was too much for the steering pump to bring it back around. The ball joints were in good shape so I just greased them while I had the axle shafts out. Also got the front brakes done while I had the front end apart. I bought greaseable Moog axle u-joints so hopefully I'll get a lot more miles out of them. Thanks for the video though! This and a few others walked me through the entire process!

I stand corrected. I've never heard of that, but I guess every vehicle acts different.

Not much left in the truck. Always apply grease to those seals or you will burn then up and then have to take it all apart!!!

Putting a new ujoint into a ujoint yoke, in NO way, makes the ujoint yoke any bigger in diameter. The only problem with getting it back in, was the nutter that was trying to put it back in. LOL =0)

Im trying to pull the "assembly" out (1:36 in the video) and mine won't go out all the way. It feels like theirs something still preventing it from popping out and I know its not the lock ring because I already took that off. Any idea on what it could be? (I'm working on an 82 Bronco)
