RIP Ed- Edward Leedskalnin was born in Riga, Latvia on August 10th, 1887. When Ed was 26 years old, he became engaged Ed to marry his one true love Agnes Scuffs. Agnes was ten years younger than Ed and he affectionately referred to her as his “Sweet Sixteen.” Agnes canceled the wedding just one day before the ceremony. Heartbroken and deeply saddened by this tragic loss, Ed set out on a lifelong quest to create a monument to his lost love that has become one of the world’s most remarkable accomplishments, originally called Rock Gate Park but now known as the Coral Castle. With no outside assistance or large machinery Ed single-handedly built the Coral Castle, carving and sculpting over 1,100 tons of coral rock, as a testimony to his lost love, Agnes. Billy Idol saw this documentary on the popular TV show: "In Search Of" with Leonard Nimoy. Billy was so moved by this story that he wrote a song about it. The rest is history...
Yes, Natalie, you're the only one in the world genius and enlightened enough to realize that this man, who happens to be famous and has been famous for the past 40 years, and has several billion views on his songs, is actually a talented man. We're all in awe at your ability to recognize talent and we all wish we could do the same.
I have to concur with you Natalie. I like BI back in his GenX days too. Always have, he was and is, special. I could never understand why his whiplash smile cassette was always to be seen in the bargain bins. I guess most people did not appreciate him. I do.
Me too… Strangely enough it kind of gives me the same feels as “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak. Haunting, intoxicating, incredibly sultry yet it also feels like heartache…💔❤️🩹

I used to hear my dad sing along to this in the living room when I was a kid. 5 months ago, he passed away and I played all the Billy Idol songs he loved at his funeral. Rest in peace, Dad 🙏🏼

I'm sorry you lost your dad, it's one of the most difficult things we have to experience in our lives, losing our dear parents, all the memories, the Christmases and birthdays, so many special moments all left to our memories. You will see your dad again.
I don't understand how this song is never on his top 10 lists. It tells a story, paints a picture, and his vocals are on point. Its my personal favorite.
I never really got Idol's image. They tried desperately to market him as some kind of punk but his hits were pretty much pop. So it might have been this attempt of covering too many bases at once and some schtick getting in the way of doing things the rational way, ending up with a romantic song with him in the video showing the middlefinger.
@@Schmidtelpunkt He was originally a punk though. He started his career playing in a Punk band called Generation X, which was part of the early British Punk scene alongside the likes of the Sex Pistols and the Clash, and were the first Punk band to ever appear on the BBC show Top of the Pops, altough they were looked down upon and hated by many of the early punks who saw Billy and Gen X as "posers", because ever since then they were leaning towards a more "pop punk" sound, (altough the term hadn't been coined yet at the time), singing mostly about love and relationships and sex and other stuff like that, and they eschewed the nihilism, militant attitude and radical politics of the early Punk scene (they had a couple of attempts at political commentary on their first album, and played some concerts for "Rock against Racism", but other than that they never got into that stuff, and decided early on that they didn't want to get very political) . And also because they were never afraid to admit who influenced them ( the Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Elvis, Bowie, Gary Glitter, T-Rex, Slade etc.), which were acts that most punk bands were influenced by, but they wouldn't admit it because they didn't want to break "the Punk code", which meant that they were supposed to be opposed to all the "rock dinosaurs" that came before them. John Lydon from the Sex Pistols once famously called Billy Idol "the Perry Como of Punk". From what I understand Billy's image after he went solo was entirely his creation. He carefully crafted every detail, from his clothes to his hair and his stage moves. From what I understand he was trying to combine his earlier Punk style and persona with elements of Elvis, Gary Glitter and Bill Fury in their prime. Also, one of his first solo hits "Dancing with myself", was actually a re-recording of an earlier song of his from his time in Generation X, and was very much Punk, and a lot of his solo music did have a certain punk influence in it. Billy is just a very versatile musician that likes to experiment with a lot of different genres like Pop, New Wave, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Electronica etc.

This song was written about Edward Leedskalnin and the Coral Castle he built in Homestead Florida. His 16 year old girlfriend turned him down, he was heartbroken. He left Latvia. he settled in Homestead and built the Castle (pictured at the start of the video) as a monument to her. He worked at night ,no one ever saw him working.
Billy Idol was the realest person in history, he is not faking, his facial expressions tells you exactly what's he feeling. There's no tv person, youtuber, thwtch streamer or whatever more perfectly connected with the camera than Billy Idol, and this was 1985!
Billy Idol was my brother's favorite singer. He was killed in a car accident in 1985 so He didn't get to hear all of his songs. I miss my brother very much!
I love this song in my sweet sixteen in 1987. Billy Idol claims in live performances that his song "Sweet Sixteen" was inspired by the story of the Coral Castle, Author of Coral Castle was born ir Latvia. Unhappy love story had reason to emigrate to USA and built Coral Castle consist of 1,100 short tons (1,000 mettric tons) of stones in the form of walls, carvings, furniture and a castle tower. He built castle for her unhappy love.
That story is awesome and really spooky. I recognized Coral Castle in the opening photo, but never realised the relationship. Love this song even more now. To anyone else interested in a little supernatural Americana; look into Coral Castle. Dude may have harnessed a certain power...
I like how Billy was always channeling Elvis with that angry snarl of his. Love this song with his melancholy raspy vocals and that great atmospheric melody. I think it's one of his very best tracks and still holds up almost 30 years later
+Shane Anthony Right on - I am a lover of women and will B to my last breath but I envy his good looks. He is awesome :) This song here is amazing. His best song IMHO :D ....Chris Isaak comes 2 mind but he can't touch this masterpiece....
+Shane Anthony talk about holding up. Me not being much or at all into music, I don't know alot of songs. I've heard it in the radio recantly and initially thought its a brand new song. It really sound very contemporary..
+Verithiell That's true. It doesn't have your typical synthesizer sound or a great sax/guitar solo which was a trademark in so many 80's songs. It's stripped down to a basic acoustic vibe and non specific to a particular decade.
+honeycat535 She might have been his sweet 16 back when they were both much younger. He might be looking back down the years. He might have written it when he was 18.... many explanations.
Holy crap... I haven't heard this song in 35 years... It's far better than I remember it being on Mtv when I was a kid...his vocals are damn amazing and he's just beautiful to look at 🔥
This is my final hour of beeing 16 years old... Damn, time goes really fast... 16 years old were the best years of my life... First love, first kiss, we had a really funny evenings with my friends... Tomorrow I'll be 17 years old, and man, I'm nearly crying, while listening this song... I won't be able to repeat these years... Good luck everyone...
happy first day of being 17!! live it up 🩷. currently listening rn but i’m 15 gonna be turning 16 in october, but i feel you. why does time have to pass by so quickly i remember just turning 13 now three yrs later i’m already almost done with my teen years 😞 but we will be okay !! take care ❤️
No worries, best years are yet to come, I just turned 25 and thinking back to the time I was 16…and I’m thankful that I’m not 16 anymore 😂 life gets better with time ❤️
my grandad used to sing this to my granny because they met when they were sixteen.... he died a few days ago and this song just reminds me of him so much
Of course but Elvis is the King of Rock, Michael Jackson is the King of Pop, Eminem is the King of Rap and Billy Idol is the King of Punk ... easy .... everyone of them have their own counrty :)
trulter solskinnsbolle Elvis is way too overestimated ; getting fed up with that crap . Get a live and not stay stuck in the past jackass. Im 100%sure Elvis himself would have loved this song very much
How lucky you are ! Where was this gig ? I can cry all my tears , but no show in France ... Here are my favorites :"Rebel yell " " Eyes without a face " " Blue Highway " . Not very original , sorry ...
I discovered this song on Spotify an hour ago just browsing through Billy's discography and it's already my favorite song of his. I love how dark and moody it sounds
I feel like crying listening to this song , so pure, so grateful to have known this song since when it was playing on the radio followed upon its release, 80's Power. In Those days, decade, No Smart Phone s, No Xboxes, No Playstations, just, , Vinyl and and Cassette. and the Music was so good.
Has to be one of the most beautiful, sweetest love songs of all time with such a sad story and you can just imagine the pain the guys going through and to make it even more sad it’s based on a true story 💔
This is such a beautiful and underrated Billy Idol song. It's melody is mesmerising & coupled with Billy's beauty (let's face it he is utterly beautiful) makes this one of my favourites songs. #Idolforever 🖤🇬🇧
I'm ashamed I've never heard it, and only found out about this song 10 minutes ago when I was reading up on the Coral Castle. I love this song and his vocals and delivery are great for this.

Probably the exact middle point between child and adult. The melody in the song & Billy Idols vocals captures this perfectly.🎶 Happy Birthday to my niece Mystic🎂yesterday was her sweeet 16
This song always reminds me of a carefree holiday in ibiza when I was 24. Lots of booze, girls, great laughs and memories that will remain with me forever. I'm 60 now and wonder where all the years have gone. However every time I hear this song I'm back in those sun kissed, carefree days in San Antonio sitting with my good mates surrounded by beautiful people and gorgeous young women. Enjoy yourselves young people, youths over in the blink of an eye.
Time really does go by like a flash. I'm 50 and seems like the years fly by even faster the older we get! I miss the days of my youth 😞. Life was so much better then.
One of the most capable communicators of a song from the last 50 years. Few people can deliver a song face to face like this so easy to watch, engaging, and natural. Man this guy is fucking the essence of what it means to be cool.
Billy Idol is a very intuitive songwriter, especially with songs like this... and White Wedding which was written for/about his sister...The image sometimes oversees the songwriter. I love Billy! Always have, always will♥
I love Billy Idol too, Sandra, and this song is great! However, you should fact check things before you write them...The song *White Wedding* was not written for his sister and it is not about her... LPM
a haunting, beautiful song, I first heard this when I was about 10, or so, and never knew who it was, heard it on the radio...always stuck with me..then on youtube i finally found it.
Yes thankyou so many comments are so meaningless and listening in what year who cares no one comments on the actual meaning and how deeply and sincerity that it took to write words and songs this is fabulous song.
If you look up coral castle in homestead, this song is about all that. There was a rocking chair made of rock, he built it for a girl that wasn't interested
Damn hadn't heard this song for many years...without a doubt one of the best rock ballads ever! Everything is top notch...Billy voice has never sounded better...just perfect.
a beautiful song, and based on the story given for the Coral Castle in Homestead, FL - an amazing physics mystery... for Billy to put to song shows great depth, I'm in awe
Lord Bison awesome! I played this smooth tune of Billy's in my car driving from a beach party along the clear, beautiful, moonlit shoreline one late night on my way home as well... Good choice of song, my friend!
You lucky devil to drive through that fascinating and beautiful Desert! I've wanted to visit there for many years and I'm from the UK. Maybe I will one day.
No matter what's the meaning this "sixteen", I will be dancing to this for next few days till i I'll be 17. I don't want to grow, the 16 is so perfect...
The first time I saw Billy playing and singing this I knew he was for real, MASTERPIECE. Is just that there's some kind of songs and some kind of sing that song that takes the artist who does it to another level well this song did that for Billy.
I was 16 when this was on the charts. My first serious boyfriend looked just like Billy, I was so in love with him and this song. He wanted to marry me, my mum told him to bugger off. I ran into him when I was in my 20"s and was thankful I hadn't married him, but etched in my memory is the beauty of this song and my first love in 1986...
This song was inspired by Billy Idol's visit to Ed Leedskalnin's Coral Castle in Florida, which was originally built for Ed's "Sweet Sixteen", a Latvian woman that promised to marry him. The place is built entirely of quarried coral stone blocks weighing many, many tons. Leedskalnin was very secretive, and built the entire enigmatic complex without anyone seeing how he did it. He claimed to have discovered the secrets of ancient pyramid builders. A picture of Leedskalnin standing inside the complex is seen in the first 8 seconds of this music video.
I remember visiting that place a few years back and i was in awe at the art that was accomplished. Plus you could feel the vibe in that place. I'd love to go back.
The Coral Castle is one of my favorite "In Search Of episodes. You can look it up on youtube. The first time I heard yhissong, I thought it must be inspired by TheVoral Castle.

Looking back Billy was the Elvis of my generation.
Billy Idol was my brother's favorite singer. He was killed in a car accident in 1985 so He didn't get to hear all of his songs. I miss my brother very much!
:(

my condoleances
maybe Billy Idols music helps him remember how he liked it...your brother lives forever in your heart, take care from Holland
sorry to hear your loss, love his voice as well!!

Don't be gay.
I wish the new generation has artists like Billy Idol :( I'm 20 and just recently found Billy and I'm in love
My favourite song of Billy. He will always be a legend. A really nice guy.
true
I love this song in my sweet sixteen in 1987. Billy Idol claims in live performances that his song "Sweet Sixteen" was inspired by the story of the Coral Castle, Author of Coral Castle was born ir Latvia. Unhappy love story had reason to emigrate to USA and
built Coral Castle consist of 1,100 short tons (1,000 mettric tons) of stones in the form of walls, carvings, furniture and a castle tower.
He was SO GORGEOUS!! I was SO caught up in his music I actually didn't notice how good-looking he was back in the 80's!🔥🔥🔥But, I do NOW!
Шедевр! Слушаю и вспоминаю, что когда-то я был молод, полон сил и вся жизнь была впереди! Прекрасная песня!
Легенда! Лучшая песня всех времён!

I WAS 13 YEARS OLD WHEN I LISTENED THIS SONG, NOW I'M 46 AND STILL I LIKE IT SO MUCH!!!
I have the similar story.
Same ...
Yes, times sure flies by, unfortunately; I remember buying this cassette (Whiplash Smile) back in 1987.
I Know exactly what you're talking about !
Me to and am 46 will be 47 on Saturday. He still great.
I like how Billy was always channeling Elvis with that angry snarl of his. Love this song with his melancholy raspy vocals and that great atmospheric melody. I think it's one of his very best tracks and still holds up almost 30 years later
+Shane Anthony I couldn't agree more! I love this song.
+Verithiell
That's true.
He might have written it when he was 18.... many explanations.
so good to see him up and singing again, must have been a mountain to climb. Ullo mate welcome back, you've been missed
This song is very touching to me… the way Billy delivers the lyrics creates this beautiful emotional feeling. I just love this song. ❤️

Definitly one of the greatest songs of the fabulous 80's....🎶💕🎉
I don't know why this song doesn't get more play. It's my absolute favorite Billy Idol song, and I love all his stuff...
Listening to my youth now at 40 makes me cry a little. Where did it all go so quick?
I am also. Feeling the same like you brother
Malcontent Yes- I feel the same..🤔✌💞
40 is young.
I'm 50 and it's always been the 80s. I get ridiculed about it but it works for me.. It's easy if ya try.

Holy crap... I haven't heard this song in 35 years... It's far better than I remember it being on Mtv when I was a kid...his vocals are damn amazing and he's just beautiful to look at 🔥

It's amazing when you are just discovering amazing Billy Idol songs decades later. I have just started really loving this song. I just love this guy!
You don't remember this when it came out? What?
BayviewFinch This was 1987, it's probable that the guy wasn't even born yet. Give him a break... Yes, we are this old :D
***** in this vid He is like Elvis but better ... ideal
Im 100%sure Elvis himself would have loved this song very much
Saw Billy Idol in 2019, he was so awesome, full of energy and played all my old favorites . Billy you are an amazing Rock Idol 💞
I had long suspected he was as much a soul singer as a rock singer. This song proved it. Great song. Great vocalist.
Not only the best ballad from "whiplash smile", but the best Billy's ballad from all.
Билли - чудо! Все восьмидесятые прошли с его песнями. Спасибо огромное!
Точняк Бро, юность вспоминается и мураши по коже🍺🚬🎸🏴☠️
I never heard about this song until yesterday... What a great masterpiece. One of these perfect songs ever written! So big, Billy Idol.

Billy Idol was the Perfect 80's Rockstar ! Over the Top, the Look , the Name , and he Walked the Walk. His Music was Great ! I miss him Dearly !
He just made an excellent new album
He's not dead hahaha

Has to be one of the most beautiful, sweetest love songs of all time with such a sad story and you can just imagine the pain the guys going through and to make it even more sad it’s based on a true story 💔
This is such a beautiful and underrated Billy Idol song. It's melody is mesmerising & coupled with Billy's beauty (let's face it he is utterly beautiful) makes this one of my favourites songs.

I'm ashamed I've never heard it, and only found out about this song 10 minutes ago when I was reading up on the Coral Castle. I love this song and his vocals and delivery are great for this.

This is probably my favorite Billy Idol song. I can listen to it over and over and still not get tired of hearing it.
"Sweet Sixteen"
I'll do anything
For my sweet sixteen,
And I'll do anything
For little run away child
Gave my heart an engagement ring.
She took ev'rything.
Ev'rything I gave her,
Oh sweet sixteen.
Built a moon
For a rocking chair.
I never guessed it would
Rock her far from here
Oh, oh, oh, oh.
Someone's built a candy castle
For my sweet sixteen.
Someone's built a candy brain
And filled it in.
Well I'll do anything
For my sweet sixteen
Oh I'll do anything
For little runaway child
Well, memories will burn you.
Memories grow older as people can
They just get colder
Like sweet sixteen
Oh, I see it's clear
Baby, that you are
All through here
Oh, oh, oh, oh.
Someone's built a candy castle
For my sweet sixteen,
Someone's built a candy house
To house her in.
Someone's built a candy castle
For my sweet sixteen.
Someone's built a candy brain
And filled it in.
And I do anything
For my sweet sixteen
Oh, I do anything
For little run away girl.
Yeah, sad and lonely and blue.
Yeah, gettin' over you.
How, how do you think it feels
Yeah to get up in the morning, get over you.
Up in the morning, get over you.
Wipe away the tears, get over you,
get over, get over...
My sweet sixteen
Oh runaway child
Oh sweet sixteen
Little runaway girl.
Gave my heart an engagement ring
She left everything
Everything I gave her
Sweet sixteen
Built a moon
For a rocking chair,
Never guessed it would
Rock her far from here
Oh, oh, oh
Someone's built a candy castle
For my sweet sixteen.
Someone's built a candy house
To house her in.
Someone's built a candy castle
For my sweet sixteen
Someone's built a candy house
To house her in.
And I'll do anything
For my sweet sixteen
Oh, I'll do anything
For little runaway child.
Do anything
For my sweet sixteen
I'll do anything
For little runaway girl
Little runaway girl
Oh sweet sixteen
Oh sweet sixteen
Oh.

This song came out the year I turned 16. I love my Billy! Just saw him in concert and he was friggin' awesome!!!!
Probably the exact middle point between child and adult. The melody in the song & Billy Idols vocals captures this perfectly.🎶 Happy Birthday to my niece Mystic🎂yesterday was her sweeet 16
This music is one of the examples, why people say, the 80 were the Golden Age of Music!
Masterpiece
This song always reminds me of a carefree holiday in ibiza when I was 24. Lots of booze, girls, great laughs and memories that will remain with me forever. I'm 60 now and wonder where all the years have gone. However every time I hear this song I'm back in those sun kissed, carefree days in San Antonio sitting with my good mates surrounded by beautiful people and gorgeous young women. Enjoy yourselves young people, youths over in the blink of an eye.
Thx for the advice, im 24 now
Time really does go by like a flash. I'm 50 and seems like the years fly by even faster the older we get! I miss the days of my youth 😞. Life was so much better then.
Knowing the story behind this song makes it even more epic and this guy even more genius.
What is the story behind this song sir?

One of the most capable communicators of a song from the last 50 years. Few people can deliver a song face to face like this so easy to watch, engaging, and natural. Man this guy is fucking the essence of what it means to be cool.
So thankful this music was part of my life growing up, 80's baby!
Saw him sang this live a few years ago..his voice was very mesmerizing ...Yes! listening to this in July 2023...got it on repeat in the car..

If you look up coral castle in homestead, this song is about all that. There was a rocking chair made of rock, he built it for a girl that wasn't interested
A unique and memorable song and like you I had no idea it was Billy Idol, till today.
