    One thing you need to know about the transmission: it works differently from a CVT. The transmission is powered by a planetary gear set which is powered by the electric motors. It doesn't use a belt or a chain like regular CVTs. Which is why every manufacturer who uses them calls them eCVTs.

    Thank you for reviewing this car. For frugal used car buyers I think the 2016-2018 RAV4s have a great balance between utility, comfort, and fuel economy

      Yea we just got one , the best thing is they are made in Japan . We tested a 2016 gas model made in America and lots of rattles with less miles than the hybrid we bought.

    I own this same vehicle in black. FANTASTIC! Best vehicle I ever owned, period. I read where the EV mode purpose is for driving inside an enclosed parking garage where you want to reduce gas fumes. Other than that it is pretty much useless. All I do is leave it in D all the time and I average 32 MPG. Happy Happy Happy! Hint, I got an adapter kit from Baxter performance that converts the oil cartridge filter to a spin on filter. It was expensive at 245 dollars but so much better than the cartridge. My oil change guy installed it in a few minutes es as it screw and bolts in place. No modifications and they give you the oil filter cartridge number to use (fram, A/C, Wix) etc. Highly recommend it. Improves cold start oil efficiency and easier oil changes.

    We have a 2015 RAV4 LE and love it. We had talked about getting a new Hybrid RAV4 but my girlfriend loves her car and loves not having a car payment. It’s really comfortable to drive and nice to take on road trips. Recently had a 2018 Tacoma but got rid of it for a 2022 4Runner. Girlfriend absolutely loves it and I let her drive it whenever she wants LOL. She’s talked about wanting a 4Runner now LOL. We absolutely love our Toyota’s

    Nice review, Zack. I have this model and I am very content with it. I average about 36 mpg. The car is very dependable. My knees appreciate being in a car that is a little more off the ground. A small complaint is that even after 4 years of ownership the door handles still have that mascara drip on my white RAV4. Every rain storm.

    After you drive a Toyota hybrid for a while, you get a pretty good feel for when the gas engine will turn on/off based on speed and pedal position. Hybrid battery failure is actually somewhat uncommon and there are relatively inexpensive DIY rebuild kits for Priuses. Toyota's hybrids are smooth and reliable as the sunrise. We've had a few Priuses in the family and we'll probably never sell our current 2010. It's just so good at what it does. Over 100k miles and the only problem it's ever had was the 12v battery dying, which happens to every car.
    Also, EV mode just uses the charge in the hybrid battery and is dependent on the temperature. The furthest I've ever gone in the 2010 Prius in pure electric was a half mile at 25MPH at no more than 20% throttle. Any more throttle or speed and it'll kick the gas engine on. If the engine's cold it'll only give you 15MPH and 10% throttle. Once you deplete the battery the gas engine will come on to recharge it, so you're not actually saving any gas. It's more for backing out of the driveway in the morning.

    Love the review. I've got a 2018 XLE with a few more luxury features than this one. I'm overly happy and pleasantly surprised how well this car drives. You hit the nail on the head, its in the goldley locks zone of size and the ground clearance and getting in and out the car and loading my toddler is a dream for my back. I'm almost coming up on a year of owning mine and my lifetime average MPG has been 38 MPG and I've my last several fill ups have been averaging 40-43 MPG. Car has gotten me through 18 inches of New England snow, many road trips throughout New England, trips to airport and daily driving between work, errands and keeping my toddler happy. I plan on keeping this car for a very long time. My father in law has a 2020 RAV4 Hybrid LE and its a nice car, but for some reason it feels more compact inside despite its larger looking exterior. I love the fact this car has a rear electric motor and a planetary electric CVT. You think about the cost of replacing a traditional transmission and the cost of replacing a hybrid battery, you're looking at roughly the same costs. But so many Toyota hybrids taxis have seen well over 300,000 miles with no sign of wear on the hybrid battery. Toyota knows how to make reliable hybrids.

      I’m really thinking and looking at the 2018 rav4 hybrids are you still liking yours ?

    • @EONEILL1987
      @EONEILL1987 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@grandmastert01 I’ve talked to many Toyota master techs and mechanics. They all agree that the 2018 model is the most reliable since it’s the final year of that production model and the early 5th gens had a lot of electrical issues. My girlfriend had a 19 RAV4 and she had nothing but issues with windows not opening, door switches malfunctioning, charger ports for your cell phone not working, connectivity issues with the head unit and phone, acceleration delays. She traded it in for a Venza hybrid which is light years better than the current gen of Rav4s. But I’ll assure you the 18 model is unbeatable and so reliable. I never had an issue with mine. Consiatantly got 40-45 mpg on a tank after fill up. Got 49mpg once after a fill up. I did my calculations manually to get the most accurate numbers. 500-550 miles on a tank with mix driving. More than capable of going off unpaved roads, deep snow, fire roads, camping trails. Always started under the coldest temps. We had below 0F temps all winter and it started every time without issue. My only recommendation is get better tires for the winter and snow. The regular all seasons it comes in slip a bit on icy roads. My ex’d dad had a 2020 RAV4 hybrid and the 12 volt kept dying, eventually his entire hybrid battery died. Issues with the windows switches, material of the steering wheel peeling, door fitment issues. I’m sure the newer rav4s have those issues addressed. But from my personal taste, I like the sportier style of the 4th gens. Easier to drive and maneuver, easy to park in tight spaces, ease of keeping it clean, ease of loading kayaks on the roof. My opinion, it’s the Swiss Army knife of SUVs.

      @@EONEILL1987 this info really has helped me thank you so much. I was debating on getting a 2022 rav4 hybrid but they are out of my price range so I’m gonna try and find a 2018 hybrid. Thanks again for the great info

    This guy doesnt understand how these work. The reverse on this is electric only and depending on the batteries state of charge , the engine can come on in reverse JUST to charge the battery , not move the vehicle.
