    Gatekeeping is a HUGE problem in DND, especially for new players. I’ve been playing since I was 10, and I’m in the dnd club at my high school where most people have never played before or even read the books. I am 1 of 2 DMs who run separate campaigns on alternating weeks- Other DM is super new. (she’s borrowing my DMs guide to learn the basics) She allows homebrew, improvs a lot, and is open to pretty much anything- he campaign is set in hell, and is run kinda like a game show. It’s super fun! I’m the complete opposite- I prefer to stick to things in the official books, I’m VERY lore invested with characters and world, I take tones of notes. Both campaigns are fun as hell!

      I've been playing D&D since I was around 15. I'm in my 40s so that means AD&D what with thac0 and all that. I ran 3 and 3.5 games and have played in one single 5e game since. 5e is a little odd to me but it works just as well as 3 did (Never played 4e)
      When Baldur's Gate 3 was released earlier this year, I noticed the people like me who grew up with 1 and 2 as their favorite games in highschool fell into two groups. The people playing the gatekeeper grumpypants game who are definitely wrong. And there's people like me who are super happy to see new people into BG3 and maybe looking into D&D and hope they have lots of fun do you have any questions about mechanics or websites I got dice rollers online here and these sites sell really good dice if you want to play tabletop...you get the idea.
      Gatekeeping a hobby will eventually kill the hobby. We NEED new people and new ideas to keep it alive and interesting. I hope your other DM doesn't let those losers deter her from continuing to DM. D&D is a wonderful social activity.

    • @Candlemancer
      @Candlemancer 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I think there's a balance. Hardcore gatekeeping is unhealthy, but so is uncontrolled growth. People coming into an established community because the thing is trendy right now, and demanding the thing or the community change to fit their preferences destroys communities.

    • @Avrysatos
      @Avrysatos 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Candlemancer You sound like the guys that actually DO the gatekeeping. Trendy. whatever. "I liked it before it was cool." Oh grow up.
      It's very hard to have any community destroyed by new people into D&D as they can run their own campaigns. And the insinuation that doing so would ruin D&D is something only a cowardly person who has to gatekeep their sacred hobby from all perceived threats would try to make anyways. my god you're probably one of those whiny little brats upset about pronoun choice in video games. ugh.

    1:22 this mentality really sucks, for any religion too. I’m pagan and my fiancé is catholic. We have a mutual respect for each others faiths. I have an alter in our room for my worship and he has his bible and catholic stuff. I buy him cross necklaces I think look cool and he buys me crystals. It’s about having mutual respect for something you don’t participate in. If your partner does that for you, that is true love

    • @ichorveinss
      @ichorveinss 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

      Was looking for this comment! As a Pagan who has never dated another Pagan, I totally agree. It's actually really wholesome to be able to ask someone you love who is Catholic to teach you what all of the different saints are, just like people I've previously dated have asked me about "what the different crystals do" and about my Tarot decks.
      Although I do understand not wanting to date someone with extremely different values, for me, that feeling comes from knowing some people could be extremely incompatible- for example a very religious person and a very atheist person with religious trauma.
      In any other case, for the most part, having differences to your partner, and learning more about their beliefs and values as a sign of love, can really enrich a relationship.

      we dress like we did when we were happy no matter the age, no one should be ashamed of dressing as their comfortable happy self. even if you were the ultra angsty uber depresso espresso stereotype at one point, there was something about the lifestyle that was positive for you. for anyone to pass harsh judgement simply for a form of expression they're not used to, it shows they can't understand significance of the ties between us and what we like same as they don't get why they like what they do.. cos ppl like that don't give second thoughts or consideration for free, many don't even think there could be something more to life than what they already know. just staying in their tiny bubble houses and thinking every alternative pedestrian on the outside merely passing by has gone the wrong way. cos it don't lead to the most important part of life in their eyes: themself. at the end of the day, it's pure ego fueled ignorance and you have some options.. pity them and be optimistic that they'll learn, don't pity them and cathartically let out your rage (legally), or the magical third option is to let yourself be indifferent living your best life regardless of what a random's gotta say about something literally innocuous as some clothes n hair. usually I'm the villain version of option 1, genuinely hoping they learn to be better people so that they cringe hard and often at their past ignorance when they go to sleep. one can maliciously hope. but also if I'd been in your situation, I probably would've just stared her down until she was the first to look away.

      I can vouch on that because yes. Even just growing some squares of crops takes a lot of planning from tilling out the area for what you want to grow, how many seed packets to plant in that area, how much gold is needed to buy whatever amount seeds you plan to grow(especially if the crop isn't a multi-harvest crop), even figuring out where to place sprinklers once you get ahold of those. For me, soup is indeed a beverage
    My grandpa had a Menudo soup restaurant, and he used to pour the broth on a cup and casually drink it
    And, since my grandpa soup was sooo delicious, I started doing that as well and still do when I'm at my mother's restaurant

      In Spain, especially the capital Madrid, there's a typical dish named 'cocido madrileño', which is basically broth with cabbage, chickpeas, and a whole lot of meat in it. Restaurants will serve it in a specific way: as the starter, a deep dish with just the broth, and then as the main dish, the meat, cabbage and other 'solids' without any broth.
      I don't care that I'm in a restaurant, I'm drinking that broth right out of the plate. What's the point of scooping that up with a spoon?

    I got into D&D with (I think it was) 3.5ed, and while I loved the RP and noncombat side of it, the combat side of it felt a little unnecessarily complicated - at least compared to 5ed, which I've been playing consistently since it came out.
    Ain't nothing wrong with a game being casual player friendly. I'm pretty sure that's why 5ed is fairly popular, and why some hardcore D&D fans don't like it ("they're pandering to the casuals" or something like that). I'm also pretty sure that's why Baldur's Gate 3 is so popular - it's actually really casual friendly (doesn't go too intense on the actual D&D mechanics, and even on the highest difficulties it's a lot easier than many other tactics-style games I've played in the past). Not every video game has to have soulslike difficulty, and not every tabletop game requires 8 hours of weekly reading to be worthwhile.

    No. You ARE a real gamer.
    I'm so sick of all these people who think they're gatekeepers. Congrats, you are. Most of you are very close to being gatekeepers. I see people saying "I put well over 100 hours into this game, it's great!" that's a lot, most of us respect that amount of time and effort. I see people who only have a switch and call themselves gamers (They are right). Come talk to me when you pick up a PS4 controller then I gatekeep you over the dumbest sh*t.
    Also DEAR ALL GAMERS: Pokemon is the highest grossing video game franchise in the world. The second-most sold game on the switch is animal crossing. The sims is wildly popular on playstation. Mario is one of the most popular series in the world. Stardew valley is a great laid back game. Mobile games are SOME OF THE MOST ACCESSIBLE. Put down the "bAbY GaMEs" and talk to people who aren't pieces of sh*t.

      That last bit especially annoyed me as a woman who doesn’t like most of those games. And who has guy friends who do like them. The only one on that list which I play is Pokémon, and that’s largely because a lot of my friends play it, so I get drawn in for a while when there’s a new gen. (Or when they do something new with eevee because eevee is the best). The rest of that list isn’t my thing and it always annoys me when people assume women only play certain games.

    10:05 @Robin hey parent here, I'll translate. This actually isn't gatekeeping, they just don't know how to express what they mean properly.
    Take someone or something you love dearly, and imagine losing them in any way. It hurts, a lot.
    When it comes to life in general, everyone knows that anything can kill you at all anywhere. A fucking spoon from left field can end your life. Shit sucks.
    Now remember that imagined feeling of losing someone you love dearly, and turn it up x10. Add in the fact that you feel ultimately responsible for everything that comes from that person, and thus responsible for their death, and then bundle it up with the fact that anything and everything around you can kill you, therefore, to protect that person, you must be responsible for everything around you to protect that person you would literally die or murder for.
    That is what this post means by "scary."
    However, this feeling is not exclusive to parents, and everyone ever has felt it some sort of way. But I personally believe (biased because parent) That parents experience that feeling in a more unique, or more accurately, front-of-the-mind even when you sleep kind of way. Maybe the responsibility part is turned up pretty heavy compared to others, idk.
    Hope that helps you understand what that parent meant :)

    The fallacy of relative privation, or appeal to worse problems, is an informal fallacy which attempts to suggest that the opponent's argument should be ignored because there are more important problems in the world, despite the fact that these issues are often completely unrelated to the subject under discussion.

My major malfunction with boneless wings is the terminology of it. They are not a wing that has had the bone removed. It's a simple chunk of chicken breast. Which is still fine. However, don't call it something it's not and proceed to charge a premium price for it. Always seemed like false advertising and unfair markup for a far cheaper item.

    22:01 Okay, as a Taiwanese, I kind of understand gatekeeping food. It's a little more complicated with non-white food because I've seen boba tea shops in the US and they'll just use the powdered stuff for everything. They'll dump whatever they thing will taste good like cotton candy (not an exaggeration. There's a boba tea place in Universal City Boardwalk Hollywood that does this) and make it sweet as sh*t because that's what sells. "If that's what people want, then why not?" Because it dilutes the brand. They'll think that boba tea is SUPPOSE to be expensive (It's not suppose to be. It's suppose to be dirt cheap. I got one tonight. It was like a 1.70 USD for 700ml.). They'll come here to Taiwan thinking the drinks suck because it's not overloaded with sugar or weirded out because it actually has real tea in it. They'll take some food item, make it badly, call it deconstructed and try to convince people it's the standard and everyone else is doing it badly. They'll miss the point or the cultural significance or the taste or they'll do it their way and then try to GATEKEEP THE ORIGINAL CULTURE THAT INVENTED IT (Really. I've had Americans tell me they eat more Chinese food than I do. Me. The person who cooked and has cooked his own food, and only Chinese food, for almost every meal, from the age of 12.), etc. and almost gentrifying it while trying to scam people. "They won't do that! You're exaggerating!" I hear you might say. *sigh* Look up Universal City Board walk Hollywood again. There's a "Japanese" restaurant there. The Japanese on the menu? It's almost all fake. The whiskey section has the kanji for "Kanpai". Entre's is translated as "Antore" in Japanese. What's "Antore" you might ask? "Antore" is the JAPANESE PRONOUNCIATION FOR THE WORD "ENTRE"! For drinks, they literally write in English "Nomimono", which they also write in Japanese. So... for drinks, they write "drinks" in Japanese and not English but not entre or appetizer is in English because... reasons? The kanji for "sake" is "mokuteki" or "goal" in Japanese... Which makes it sound like they made the menu with the goal of selling expensive sake to unknowing/unwitting non-Japanese people.
    If, like, a non-Chinese person learned the culture and the language and shows respect for the food, the food culture and its origins, I have no problems. But that very, very, veryveryvery often isn't the case.
    So yeah, not all gatekeeping is bad, in my opinion. Just, like, most of it because I've seen a lot of people trying to get into stuff for the sole purpose of trying to be better than everyone else (I've had people telling me I don't know as much as about anime as they do. B*tch, I was watching Fist of the North star before you were born), as a measuring stick to "other" people they don't like, or to gatekeep other's if they have an opinion on an anime that's outside their own (Why do you think most anime is about a bad of outcasts? You know, AKA, the people that were kept out of things in society?). People that want to get into something just to use it to harm/hurt/demean/etc. others, those people need to be gatekepted out.

      I feel like specific subgenres in general kind of do need a *little* bit of gatekeeping. Like no, souls-like games shouldn't have an easy mode, because that defeats the point. Games are art and the struggle is part of the art in those games. And this is from someone who's not massively into that genre because of the difficulty.

      @@Candlemancer I don't really care either way on the dark souls difficulty debate. I cheated my way through Elden Ring so I couldn't care less.

    Hoo boy. I'm feeling pretty crappy putting maybe 30 hours collective time into Mario Wonder if 100 is being used as a base metric. Any levels ya'll recommend so I can grind out the remaining 70 even though I 100%ed everything?

    I can confirm Hello Kitty is starting to trend. My girls and their friends are all about Hello Kitty now and I’m loving it.

    Manacled is a very adult very abusive Happy Potter fanfic, and I think someone on tiktok was binding it into actual books and selling it on etsy. Both stealing from the person that wrote it and potentially causing trouble with the legality of fanfiction. That's the context I believe.

    > Put down the baby-games and play something that requires challenge and skill for once
    Okay dude let's see you take a swing at Pokemon Desolation, a fangame that made me struggle whilst playing with what is the closest thing to baby-difficulty/godmode you can have in Pokemon. (All my Pokemon have 31 IVs in every stat and there is no cap to EVs they earn (other than the 254 EVs they can have in a single stat, so every stat can have 254 EVs, as opposed to the usual 510 EVs maximum)
    And that's STILL playing vs code. Now imagine playing against a human being who can see the cheese you're doing and adapt to it.
    At the risk of sounding like a gatekeeper: You wouldn't last a second on Pokemonshowdown and Pokemon can be FAR from easy (Not that a game needs to be hard and challenging to be enjoyable)

    I’m a punk and I’ll never understand the gatekeepers in the sky communities, like yeah there is a line, like for example if you don’t even listen to punk music or hold beliefs only contrary to punk then chances are you aren’t punk but past the music and beliefs you can be a punk no matter what, I know a lot of other “punks” will go “um actually you’re wrong because of blah blah blah” but don’t listen to them

    12:52 - The point about LotR also applies to SW and Marvel, because both have vast and detailed secondary sections of canon that casual fans of the movies and TV shows may never interact with. MCU fans may not be comics readers. Star wars fans may watch the movies and Disney+ shows, but may know kark-all about Legends. Hell, I have learned a lot about some sections of Legends since getting into SW fanfic, especially stuff about Obi-Wan's padawan years and Jango Fett's backstory, since I have mostly been in the Clone Wars part of SW timeline, and favouring Obi-Wan as a character.
