Even for the recognition Brian gets, his skills is so underrated at least by most tech fans in general. This video is four years old, but the problem has only gotten worse. Basically I don't believe anything I get in email, texts, phone calls, and the like. The scammers and hackers are still working overtime.
Don't answer those quizzes on social media accounts that are "fun to do". They can be loaded with questions like, Year you were born? Or favourite colour, hot drink, etc. Name of your pet. They'd likely monitor your account over a week and come up with pure gold. Say goodbye to your money!
Yes, these quizes are actually put out by data-mining companies and market research groups. Only fools answer them, and really you should not even tell friends and family your personal details in this day and age.
Funny that I always use the security of "Name of my pet"; since I don't have pet; so I have a name in mind that no one can mine from my profile :) The key of security question/answer should never available from your online profile .
"SHOULD" being the keyword. I broke mine and all I had to do was walk into a Rogers store, give them my phone number and they sold me one right then and there. I was in and out in 30 seconds.

@@markbriones8567 You just call someone up and ask for their information, or they call you (or email) Anyone without much knowledge can do this, especially on the elderly.. hacking is done without the knowledge or consent of users, like hacking banks, governments etc. (Regular people usually aren't a target for hackers)
I got this a few times when I just said my street number wrong or even name wrong by mistake, it still go through. Not to mention once time me and relative use the same phone number and we got pretty far in and they ask us if we want to confirm an option and I am like "Umm, that is my relative, not me" despite me telling them my full name, street address, just that we use the same phone number on my phone, they thought it was my relative that is calling, didn't even check up the name when I said it first time.
I don't rely on my sim card for my two factor authentication. I rely on timed code generator which is intrinsic to the phone, not the sim card. The important thing to do is to backup your keys in a fireproof safe incase you lose your phone or want to setup a new phone with a two factor code generator.
I used to work at the Barrie call center handling these calls. Needless to say I do not work there anymore. Quality control isn't there care for workers is worse and the pay/hours for the stress on quotas simply isn't enough for all staff to care.
The problem is mostly a two fold. On one side, the company wants to offer the best service in order to keep customers happy and within their hold. On the other side, most customers care more about convenience than security. This naturally leads to laziness on both sides as they begin to accept each others sides. This is the advantage that phishing, social engineering and other art uses.
Roach Spray your identity can be sold and used to open accounts making you even more broke. It’s not only an issue for those with some money. There are minors identity used to get credit cards and loans even though they can’t sign their name. So don’t feel too safe cause you’re broke
When I used to work on the internet helpdesk, I was the stingy rep that wouldn't give out info. Back in those days (late 90's early 00's) there were about 10 of us in the same room, all within earshot of each other. I would hear another rep get the same person digging for info and I would go over to their desk and stop them from giving it out. Even back then social engineering was a big thing.
@@erynnlouise I disagree that rogers should be held responsible. Sure, they made a mistake in verifying it was you communicating to them in chat, but they didn't steal your money. Whatever crypto wallet you were using, wasn't secure enough. Instead of using 2auth with text messages, google 2auth provides more security, then it doesn't matter if people get into your rogers acc. Or better yet, store your crypto on a personal hdd, then hide that hdd somewhere. It's horrible how much money you lost, and amazing that people can take that with no remorse. However, I think tech companies had an issue with account security for a long time, so one solution was connecting accounts with email. Then they started to realize people use the same password for emails as they do other accounts and email isn't secure. Then they decided to connect accounts with phone numbers as well. Although the phone carriers weren't prepared to take that burden. To be the gate keeper between someone's accounts with $30,000 is a big responsibility. Blaming them for losing your money isn't the answer, it would be like blaming a police officer for not successfully stoping a home theft. Sure, it's the police officers job and responsibility to stop crimes from occurring, but it isn't their fault for the crime when they fail.
Schmuck some fair points. Here’s some extra details to consider. I can’t give all because of the open investigation. I was using google auth - they still got through. I always keep crypto in a hard wallet, I only had it in exchange briefly to convert for withdrawal. Rogers agents made 7 mistakes in a row, and even proceeded to do the sim swap after the account was flagged as “possible fraud”. This wasn’t acceptable human error but gross negligence in protecting my personal data. The money aside, I am now at risk of identity fraud for the rest of my life. More than a dozen people have reached out to me since this aired with the same experience, some lost crypto, some fiat, and some identity fraud. Rogers promotes 2FA as added account security. There are numerous mechanisms Rogers can put in place to prevent this, as other companies demonstrate with proven success. eBay. Paypal. Banking institutions. To name a few.
I use to work in various call centers, this here is why I took suck pleasure in being a hard man to deal with on verifications. If I heard whispering I would flag the account even, I never made it easy unless the person had enough info that I couldn't deny them over.

IN the UK the rule is the banks will never call and ask for personal information. If I'm called by any person purporting to represent an organisation I deal with I ask them for my details, to prove they are who they say they are, IF they don't/won't can't tell me, I hang up, simples. IF I call my bank then I will answer any security questions. I don't keep my whole life on a smartphone and so will probably never be successfully scammed.
He said "him". I believe the reporter's authorized person for the account is her husband, which I believed she mouthed, so the scammer went with that being his husband as well instead of creating a different relative.
After someone stole my phone number to attempt the same attack on me, when I tracked down the cellphone company they used and contacted them, and asked them what info was used to obtain my phone number improperly, that conpany told me all sorts of info about me, without even verifying that I was me in any way other than my saying that they had taken my number incorrectly. So there are some American Cellphone companies that are no better.
Well it always comes down to convenience. Everyone wants convenience without taking responsibilities of risks. Personally, if i had my own company, customer records would be held to strict guidelines and would never be revealed out of all places, on social medias. I personally value security over convenience.
Highway Pro yeah totally! And it was nuts how the hacking got easier the longer the phone call went on. Poor girl sat there helpless and fearful of how that could go down with not-so-ethical hackers just as easy.

They need to start requesting for them to come into the bank showing proper identification so that that way they know you by face when you come in that shows your ID number and to notify you by doing this is the most important thing that will save people from being hurt any further is having them to come in not giving them no information on the phone but to come in and talk to them with proper identification I hope you agree to this if not people are only setting yourself up for a world of hurt I hope this can be a big help they also need to be fingerprinted in the banks to know that it is you and not someone else
The world is already a weird place, that won't stop anything. They now use details of your print on a specialy made silicone gloves to enter banks on your behalf wearing your exact face on a mask.
I think they should require Zoom and identification card while on the call when requesting changing information. The provider should also have a copy of your identification on file with your photo. It should be video calls where they see you or they don't change anything on your behalf. It could be Microsoft Teams video call, Skype or other but see the person face to face.
I've been working in an office for the last 3yrs, and one thing I've learned from things that I've been asked to do is if you sound like you're calling on the company's behalf, they'll usually work with you. So far, out of every task I've been given, our bank is the only one that won't work with me... And I'm our Accounts Payable person. I have access to our account. I can verify every piece of information asked. But if I use my name, they end the call. Every other company account works with me as soon as I say "my boss has been getting on me to 'handle this task' so that's why I'm calling". And I have done A LOT on this company's behalf..
definition of hacking on google "the gaining of unauthorized access to data in a system or computer"... So yes, this is hacking. In fact probably the most powerful form of hacking and will never go away. Kevin Mitnick, above all was an excellent hacker because of SE'ing.

how does a company give out a DOB? i mean why would a customer need to know their OWN birthdate? if they need to know their own birthdate, then maybe it's not the customer who is asking...
You can ask them to verify your dob, so you next time you call them, and let’s say, you cant remember your password or the answer for the security question they could ask you for your dob or your post code
Because a cell phone is a radio, and it freely broadcasts data, there is actually no quatantee of privacy and security. You are choosing to broadcast your information. It is like standing on the street corner and haveing a yelling conversation with your lawyer, then expecting others not to listen. The entire system is flawed.
@@KieSeyHow Whhhhhhaaaaaaatttt? No it's nothing like that, it's very difficult to listen into phone calls without access to the cell towers or the device.
I watched this and the one thing that may have added to the rep throwing the rules out the wind is the key word SALE if reps weren't pushed so hard to make a sale on every call it would happen less often. Pay phone reps with out making that call the subject of a new sale and there will be less
Good point. The first words to a CSR would be, “Hi, I’m calling for my grandpa and he needs the xx package added to his account. Calling on behalf of the elderly, you know because “they’re not use to all the technology” I would think would be fairly easy.
@@concerned_2023 You are right but they may not be used to the tech but if they have it they must know something and if you are calling either they need to call us in person and answer the security questions or better just come in to our store and we can verify who you are and set that up. We need to do something different than we are doing now which is nothing and letting them away with breaking rules or they are responsible for the pain they cause.

To say that there will be always human error is not good enough. That is unacceptable. Use passwords that are encrypted and have letters, numbers and special characters and punctuation and make it no less than an old number of digits preferably longer then shorter..
What we need is a transparency in the market of reporting incidents and accounting for a company's reputation in this department. Whether this is government mandated or peer pressure oriented. They shouldn't have the right to hide these incursions when they are discovered, in the same way that credit card data is treated. Personal information that is disclosed to a party that has no right to that information is a breach of trust and confidence and usually requires legal permission, therefore, requires legal action or responsibility.
the reasons it's not safe to use your personal information as security questions, is social media. that's where you're putting all your personal information. online out into the world for everybody to see it, so it doesn't make sense to use your personal information as security.

What? How will a VPN help at all? Aside from hiding from your ISP or whatever website you're traveling too. When you use a VPN your data still hits whatever access point you're connected to, so you're still vuln to mitm attacks and then travels to the vpn, then to the destination. If anything a VPN adds another dangerous aspect because your data is travelling through Nord's servers now. VPN companies love using 'security' as a marketing tactic, but it doesn't really help.
A VPN won't stop what happened here. This isn't just browsing online and the shows you've visited and your passwords. Putting your info on social media for easy access and reps not really paying attention on the security phase led to this. Or reps willingly giving information out.

Educating about Cyber security is crucial but our Big 3's have overseas call centers. Sending a PDF or PowerPoint presentation about security and assuming the training will be at the best MAY not be the case. When you drive a rental car you don't care how you drive, a few bumps on road - who cares its not your car but when you drive your own car, you are always alert. Having said that, I think there are lot of work to be done with Our local call centers too. Can't say too much though.
Use multiple layer of encryption algorithms to your desired password, and make it with lots of characters. It would be so hard to guess until you have to write it down
Friend: Can I ask you a question? Me: You just did, but go ahead and ask me another one Friend: What's the best password to use and easy to remember? Me: For password, use the word "incorrect..so next time you log in with wrong password you'll see this "Your password is incorrect" There you go, problem solved. No more forgotten password.
Call centers in canada suck. I've worked in them for the better part of my adult life, thankfully no more. 90% of company's out source their calls to agents who dont work directly for them. The agent they spoke with here works for HGS in barrie not Roger's in barrie. These sister companys dont pay well enough or accommodate at all for their workers and most just see it as a stepping stone. If companys cared about their consumers privacy they wouldnt outsource all of their calls to people they dont even know. I've seen terrible things even agents hacking customers accounts and taking credit cards. Truly a backwards industry.
I don’t answer any call that is not registered on my phone. I don’t read any text message that is not a family or friends. I don’t care if the revenue call me! I don’t answer. 😂
Kyle Jones even if it was here it could easily sound like India with the number of Indian immigrants here. Who’s to say the call centre scams in India can’t have relatives in Canada passing along the info.
Rogers doesn't have call centres out of Canada, bozo the clown. As per Rogers policy, the cx only need to confirm to pieces of info such as email, postal code or pin. Most cx wouldn't remember the pin anyway
@Abe E I worked at a company that was an outsource for a specific state in the US. I think it was for where ever Boston is. I was told by the company to say I was from that Boston and have the weather ready in Google. Doesn't matter where they say they are from. On the other hand, it was a job in Canada and one time when I answered the person was so happy I "wasn't from India" and kept saying how every other time he called it was "India." I had been under the impression we were the only outsource and was confused until I looked around the room and realized I was one of the few people who wasn't Indian in the room. So the point is, you never know.

At first, I hated FICA and RICA. Suddenly I kind-of love the way our South African companies ask the caller to give his/ her ID number, residential address, employer... and the call gets put through to a computer that demands your PIN... one digit or number out, and the call doesn't go on. Still not infallible, but wow. Eight calls to get that first woman's eight details?
I wish all those french clients that got mad at me and yelled at me for not providing them with info that thet claim they forgot. I wish they see this then feel bad for the rest of their lives.
In my country the bank will require the person it self to come to the bank to change such a sensitive thing + it will even ask the owner super insane and rough questions its difficult for us but its also for safety.
Teleco companies do ask security questions and enforce them , and customers are furious . They hate having to answer questions, they say "let people hack me I don't care , it's just a phone/cable account , I don't care" . People get SO angry when they need to answer security questions. They don't see the threat. If you try to send them to a store in person they completely explode . I've been taking these calls for 3 years , and customers NEED to see videos like this to understand that 1234 or 0000 are not useful pins. You NEED to answer the security questions.
If these companies stopped paying their employees minimum wage, and treated them like, I don't know, human beings? Perhaps this would cause them to actually give a crap about peoples personal info. Currently they have very little motivation to protect crap, despite the fact their used in such vital positions. Personally, I'd argue their continued choice to treat their employees poorly and under pay them, is whats causing the security breaches, and that these companies like rogers should ABSOLUTELY be held accountable.

I dated a guy who would interject those banking online questions. One time he asked 2 of those questions and the second question made me hesitate a bit then i gave him the wrong answer. He would ask questions like 'what did you do with the keys your room mate gave back when she moved out?' and i innocently answered. He of course, went straight to that point and got the keys without me knowing. He basically asked all the questions of things he was going to steal and asked me where i kept them. At the time, i traveled a lot so needed to have a set place. Long story short, he made sure he covered his bases. It has been 7 years and he still gets into my house. I have had the locks re-keyed 3 times, I very often change my garage door code, yet he still gets in. Yes, he hacked into my security camera and was watching me. The cops won't help. He has stolen cameras I have bought. He gets in and out without my current camera picking him up. He is 61 years old. Not like we / he is young.

Yeahhh most companies' security is complete crap. Like account #, full address and name, that's it. Most have an option to add a pin number but hardly anyone ever uses them. I worked for a major hotel chain in a call center. People got their accounts breached all the time. Combine that with minimum wage for workers, horrific hours of work, endless barrage of abuse from unhappy customers and hiring anyone with a pulse that is just completely out of any other employment option, and here we are. It's an industry that sad to say, could really benefit from robots. Sorry, Artificial Assistants lol

I don't rely on my sim card for my two factor authentication. I rely on timed code generator which is intrinsic to the phone, not the sim card.
The important thing to do is to backup your keys in a fireproof safe incase you lose your phone or want to setup a new phone with a two factor code generator.
Eric Cartman -How do you do that?
I used to work at the Barrie call center handling these calls. Needless to say I do not work there anymore. Quality control isn't there care for workers is worse and the pay/hours for the stress on quotas simply isn't enough for all staff to care.

The problem is mostly a two fold. On one side, the company wants to offer the best service in order to keep customers happy and within their hold. On the other side, most customers care more about convenience than security. This naturally leads to laziness on both sides as they begin to accept each others sides. This is the advantage that phishing, social engineering and other art uses.

I would hear another rep get the same person digging for info and I would go over to their desk and stop them from giving it out. Even back then social engineering was a big thing.

Sounds like you need to sue Rogers....
Mark D I am. They need to be held responsible.
Good for you. This was completely unacceptable and I hope they get what they deserve. 3 months of internet was an absolute joke. Stay strong !!!! 🙂🙂

Answer is simple. Do not use social media.

In my country the bank will require the person it self to come to the bank to change such a sensitive thing + it will even ask the owner super insane and rough questions its difficult for us but its also for safety.
The next time you talk to a call center and they can't verify you, remember this before you get mad at them.
I would sue that company making them pay for their stupidity

i know of a very good hacker that can help you with any type of hacking, either phones or computers. My husband was so smooth at hiding his infidelity so I had no proof for months I was referred to some hacker and decided to give him a try the result was incredible because all my cheating husbands text massages, emails, Facebook, bitcoin, youtube,WhatsApp, Snapchat, fortnite ,Instagram /instagram followers and viber conversations was wired directly to my cellphone. He helped me put a round-the-clock monitoring on him and I got concrete evidence of his escapades if you think your partner is an expert at hiding in his cheat adventure you can contact him too at cybercrack_hack37588 on instagram
Good to know where to start if the bank account starts to drain without permission!
This why it's important to find them & have them prosecuted for messing with your life!

If you don't hold your own private keys then its NOT your crypto.. Stay away from exchanges period.
Phlegethon only shocked at how willing Rogers was to give away all of my data. Not shocked at the attempt of course. It was all in cold storage until I needed to convert the currency for withdrawal.

This is just a matter of incometent call centre workers, should be able to claim any damages done from the provider. Of course, in an ideal world the provider gets a massive fine every time this happens to encourage th to outsource competent companies
Thats her.. my husband that should of set of red alarms right there!

Part of the problem with these exposé programs is that they quickly educate those who didn't know how to do this. They should conceal the details that enable lots more peoplet o become adversely affected before industry can possible catch up, especially since what they identifying are flaws in the system created by human nature, in other words, complete protection by industry will be predictably improbable.
Love the background music!!

Did anyone else notice that the ethical hacker has a “3 percenter “ sticker on his his laptop.
It is because i am based.
Rogers should of had to replace the woman’s money . Shame , shame on you Rogers . Absolutely not okay .
Who in the world is Rogers
Not like we / he is young.
lol wtf just buy a gun
DUDE I never thought how easy to get into someone's account 😭
You think this is bad. I once found a set of keys with a Tescos club card attached to the keyring. I called tescos to ask them to contact the owner. The guy on the phone offered to give the owner of the keys address. Let that sink in...
