I remember getting the occasional King George coins in change right up to the redesigned smaller coins came in. I believe the number of coins minted every year has been falling recently so it could be a very long time before the Elizabeth coins disappear. I wouldn't expect a large changeover event of the kind you get with notes.
I used to work in Radio for the BBC... they have a procedure all set and ready to go for when this event happens, or when any significant Royal dies... the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, William and Harry. Everything from the script to the music played on the station has already been chosen as well as written obituaries. They have been ready for some time.
The Armed Forces too have plans too for the death of a significant Royal. The Royals have been asked for their input etc. An example was when Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother died and we played all music chosen by her. The Pipe bands played a significant rôle as they were her favourite. Operation London Bridge is the name of one of the plans.
@wendy kelly These things are considered personal affairs. So The Royals actually have a big influence on what is in the plans. They hand pick the music and what officials to invite or not to invite. When Princess Diana died, the Queen Mother's funeral arrangements were dusted and updated. Everybody's knees where shaking what the late Queen was going to say when she sees her own plans altered and when she realised that she had to come up with a new plan.
I recently went to Thailand, and I did actually notice that there were different kings on different banknotes (and had heard of the previous king's recent death). Although sad and a bit morbid to dwell on, it is still kind of interesting in a way to see a country undergoing a transition like this.
I'm pretty sure the two florin coin survived decimalisation and continued as the 10p coin, alongside newer versions, until the early nineties. Some of those two florin coins still had King George VI's head on. I'd be grateful if somebody could confirm this. Honestly, I really don’t want to be insensitive here, but I think that’s what she’s trying to do. Outlive her „scandalous“ son so he doesn’t ascend the throne.
Old coins would be around for a long time. Even after decimalisation in the early 70s you could still find coins with King George VI on them as the old one shilling and two shilling coins were used as 5 and 10p coins. While rare they only completely disappeared when the new smaller 5 and 10p coins were introduced in the early 90s.
I was thinking this also, 10 and 5p coins from pre-decimalization stuck around until the early 1990s when they shrank the size of the coins. It was quite common to see George VI coins and very occasionally a George V one, I also have a few Victoria ones that my Mum gave me.
There are still some coins around that bear the image of HRH George VI *and* are still legal tender! 💷 The Crown (5s pre-decimal and 25p post, for crowns minted prior to the 2000s) is still legal, not demonetised, and can be used for the settlement of court-recognised debts. 👩🏾⚖️ Just don’t be disappointed if they refuse to accept them in your local supermarket! 😆 (As „Legal Tender” *≠* „ *Must* be accepted in payment” 📜)
In Canada once in a blue moon you'll get an old coin still in circulation. Used to be King George coins in the 1990s. Now its more like Queen Elizabeth coins but from not long after she became the queen. Pennies aren't used anymore but I got an old QEII nickel from the early 1950s a while back.
Just to be pedantic, the British Monarch has never appeared on Canadian banknotes and coins. It is the Canadian monarch who appears. Just happens to be the same person. And I very seriously doubt that the Monarch will be removed from the $20 bill. There are still enough monarchists in this country who will throw enough of a fit to make it a politically bad idea.
A year later and 63 upvotes and nobody pointed out your comment made no sense. It is the British monarch on the Canadian bill as titles are not mutually exclusive. He never said that’s what the Canadians call her. Being pedantic is fine if it’s necessary but not only was this unnecessary it was wrong. You just sound like a dick moaning for no reason.
Well technically it is the British Monarch as her Title is Queen of Great Britiain and N.Ireland and the commonwealth which includes Canada but doesnt mention it so she is the British Queen but also the Queen of Canada but its not in her title so i guess its preference
@@extint3407 You are incorrect. "Queen of the United Kingdom" is one of numerous titles that she holds. Queen of Canada, Queen of Australia, Queen of New Zealand, Queen of Jamaica etc. are all completely separate titles. There is no such title as "Queen of the Commonwealth", but rather her title is "Head of the Commonwealth" since the majority of Commonwealth nations are republics.
Pre-decimal shilling coins were in circulation up until 1990 when the size of the 5p coin was changed. George VI coins were common; even Queen Victoria coins would pop up occasionally. I remember once finding a William IV coin, issued more than 150 years before, which would still have been legal tender until 1990.
I’ll be sad to see the Queen leave the Canadian 20, there’s just something about her expression that’s so calming. Once when I was lost, I held onto my $20 dollar for comfort. And to a young me, it felt like the Queen was comforting me until I could find my mother.
I agree with this comment. Living in Canada I've very rarely come across anyone who doesn't have at least a positive view on the monarchy. Plenty seem to actively like it. Even if they take the monarchy off the 20 I would assume it would only be moved to a different bill instead of completely removed.
Last time around even the Australian republicans were so sure the monarchy would be ditched at a referendum that they went ahead with it. In the end it turned out that the people were very happy with the system. The democratic way of government it keeps a lid on, and the economic prosperity that most people can enjoy under it... So they bothered to show up and cast their votes to support the continuation of the monarchy.
I remember you could spend pre 1920 and pre 1947 silver coins 5p & 10p back in the 70's & 80's. You used to find in your change the pre 1947 silver shillings 5p & silver florins 10p back in the 70's & 80's, all legal tender back then. I used to keep them all though. I got a few victorian shillings & florins in my change too back in the day.
There's a mistake at 1:52 - the half-penny shown is a decimal one. The pre-decimal ones are much larger. The half-penny was kept in the decimal system to allow more accurate conversions from pre-decimal coinage, but were quickly phased out.
I think this was to ensure forward-compatibility for the half crown, which (Converting to decimal) was worth 12,5p. As it would’ve been wholly impractical to demonetise/withdraw the half crown on D-Day (And result in a lot of peed-off shoppers!) providing a way it could continue to be used and then taking them out of circulation at banks and post offices was a much more sensible way to go about it. 👍🏽 The 0,5p coin was eventually withdrawn in 1982, but the Royal Mint coin set for 1983 (Designed before the coin was withdrawn) still had a 0,5p coin in it. 🙂
It was a fairly slow phase out really. The old half-penny was frustratingly just a fraction smaller than the new 2p. I tried to trick one of those tuppenny falls machines with old ha'penny's but it was having none of it.
Mate, I used shilling (5p) / 2 shilling(10p) coins with the old king on in the late 1980s and I was born AFTER decimalisation. I think we'll survive. RE: Australia/Canada, Canadians and Aussies (and kiwis) I know quite like the queen on thier money, it's the politicians who feel the need for change not the population.
As an Australian, I am not happy with the Queen being on our money, but live with it. However, I would not be happy at all with Prince Charles being on our money.
We flipping love the Queen on our currency over here in the UK. She is so pretty and regal. I think lots of people want to change it due to their uneducated look about royalty and about the Queen. In England we like programmes about history and we have lots of costume dramas that show the life of the Queen. I suggest that you find BBC or ITV costume dramas about the Queen because they can be very accurate and it can show you an insight into her life.

In Belgium in 2013, when king Albert II abdicated, euro coins where produced portraiting king Filip (his son and heir). King Albert II was facing to the left and King Filip now faces to the right.
Same thing happens with our former President, Ion Iliescu of Romania. Everybody talks about his death, but he just can't seem to flippin die already! PS: Most of us Romanians outright hate that man. He's thought to be the Father of Romanian corruption that has plagued our country for 31 years.

2:48 The queen blinked on the 50 quid note. I had to rewatch that part several times to make sure I wasn't imagining things, but she actually blinked. Thought I was losing my mind😂
Yes, I remember this too. George VI shillings and florins were quite common in circulation until the smaller 5p and 10p coins were introduced in the 90's.
This video made me check what happened to the Dutch Euro coins since Queen Beatrix abdicated in 2013 and King Willem-Alexander took over. I, like a lot of people in The Netherlands, barely use any cash anymore so I've never noticed any difference. Turns out they changed it in 2014.
Same in Spain, Juan Carlos I who stepped down in I believe it was 2014 was replaced in the coins by Felipe VI. They issued a special legal tender commemorative coin featuring the two for that year but that's it
Recently I got a George VI nickel (5 cents) in my change. In the USA. It's pretty normal for Canadian coins to circulate in the USA. Within a couple hundred miles they are generally accepted.
Even after decimalisation you would still see coins in circulation with the king on them. The shilling was the same size as the old larger 5p coins, same with the old 10p. It was the same size as a 2 shilling coin. I still saw them in the early 90s
incidentially the Victorian double florin is still legal tender in the uk.. although no one who has one is silly enough to spend it at its 24p face value
Who all went, "Ewww" everytime they saw Prince Charles' face on the note? Admit it, the Queen looks way more graceful than any future King they might have.
To be fair, if we had to change all the money every time the presidency changed hands, that would get old real quick. Hell, given the pace at which the federal government works, they'd probably take at least four years to get it done. :)
"King George - almost 20 years." Actually, much much longer. The shilling became 5p and continuted to circulate as did the floring which became 10p. These were only withdrawn in the early 1990s when coins got smaller - nearly 40 years after the accession.
Just a quick add on for you... When the Charles the Prince of Wales takes the throne, he doesn't have to take the name Charles with him. That's why Monarchs have two Birthdays. Their own and then their coronation, in which you can take a new name. If he did, he'd be HRH King Charles III or he could take the name George, in which case he'd be HRH King George VII. And so on, and so forth.
Considering the history of kings named Charles in the UK, it's more than likely he will take a different name, though I wouldn't count on George either. Albert or Phillip would be my bets.
Please note this is all pure speculation based on previous / other examples and will not necessarily happen like this. Queen Elizabeth II, 1926-2022

Prince Charles is not a young man himself, it’s not impossible that he’ll predecease his mother.
He's 70 and she's 93. He's no spring chicken but surely he'd still be able to run rings around a nonagenarian.
Honestly, I really don’t want to be insensitive here, but I think that’s what she’s trying to do. Outlive her „scandalous“ son so he doesn’t ascend the throne.
Carolinka He hasn’t made any real waves in 25 years, but you could be right. Certainly she has a long memory.

Certainly wont be digging them up in a few hundred years though. The ones I find are barely a year old and completley corroded haha
A husband of a work colleague got a 1942 farthing in change (instead of 1 p) several years ago. They are still among us!
There are still some coins around that bear the image of HRH George VI *and* are still legal tender! 💷
The Crown (5s pre-decimal and 25p post, for crowns minted prior to the 2000s) is still legal, not demonetised, and can be used for the settlement of court-recognised debts. 👩🏾⚖️
Just don’t be disappointed if they refuse to accept them in your local supermarket! 😆
(As „Legal Tender” *≠* „ *Must* be accepted in payment” 📜)
In Canada once in a blue moon you'll get an old coin still in circulation. Used to be King George coins in the 1990s. Now its more like Queen Elizabeth coins but from not long after she became the queen. Pennies aren't used anymore but I got an old QEII nickel from the early 1950s a while back.
An here we are, on the cusp of finding out which scenario will play out.

God save the Queen!
@@Bergamot88 God Don't Save Charles, though!
That was heartwarming to read.

Old coins are worth more than face value so people don't spend them.
When I first came to the U.K. in the 1950’s there were bronze coins from Victoria and silver coins from Edward VII still in circulation

Hello rocket shitter
Hi rocket man

You get William the fifth.
The 0,5p coin was eventually withdrawn in 1982, but the Royal Mint coin set for 1983 (Designed before the coin was withdrawn) still had a 0,5p coin in it. 🙂
Lol does anyone really care abt this? Only nerds do (no offense, sry if offense is taken, this is a joke.)
It was a fairly slow phase out really. The old half-penny was frustratingly just a fraction smaller than the new 2p. I tried to trick one of those tuppenny falls machines with old ha'penny's but it was having none of it.
Yeahmate

We flipping love the Queen on our currency over here in the UK. She is so pretty and regal. I think lots of people want to change it due to their uneducated look about royalty and about the Queen. In England we like programmes about history and we have lots of costume dramas that show the life of the Queen. I suggest that you find BBC or ITV costume dramas about the Queen because they can be very accurate and it can show you an insight into her life.

Florin.
Albert or Phillip would be my bets.
well we will find out soon.
