  • What Is Hardening Off? Why do we do it? How do we do it? How long does it take? All valid questions and right now is when we need to be thinking about hardening off our young plants and seedlings before taking them outside.
    The change in environment from inside to outside, even if your spring is warm and cozy is drastic. There are infinitely more pressures put on a plant in the great outdoors than there is under grow lights and timers and perfect conditions 24/7.
    Today, we'll cover the whole process of hardening off so that you can move your early indoor starter plants from inside to out in the garden without missing a beat! Best of luck this year, enjoy!

      I already killed my Lima beans. Peas are still alive and growing. They’re all tented in plastic.
      I started the hardening off process today for the tomato plants before watching this video. I thought of leaving them in the green house but at 9pm it was already 46 degrees… so now they’re back in the house until tomorrow…. Hmmm, 13 days to go!
      May we all have great successes! 😊🌱

    You were already THE BEST GARDENING TEACHER to me.
    This one blew me away.
    The explanations of what ,why and how. Details on how long and when to leave the plants out.
    Perfect.
    Thank you.
    I live in Sacramento, California with an extremely long growing season . 298 days ?
    BUT...I still have over 120 seedlings that I am gonna start hardening off. It's still in the high 40 degree range at night.😮
    My plant babies won't experience any sleepovers for a few weeks
    This video is right on time.
    Thanks again😊

I'll wait a little longer for tomato and pepper plants. I have almost 2 weeks of hardening off and I'm ready.

    Brilliant reasoned instruction as always. In the milder NW of England I can cheat by moving plants into my unseated poly tunnel for a week, covering in fleece (row cover) if there is an likelihood of frost. Then a couple of weeks later I can plant out, again using fleece for 2 to 3 weeks to protect transplant from the wind mainly and any late frosts. This method saves me a lot of moving of my many small trays each day. Best regards

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Its not that you can't...its that most people don't have an acre of free indoor space to waste on peas that so EASILY direct seed outside. For sure you CAN start peas and corn and many other plants inside.....its about what is worth the time and space and effort to do so.... :-)

      @@TheRipeTomatoFarms We have, as a result of a very hot last summer, reverted back to wall of waters. As you know, tomatoes stop producing in heat, so forcing them early allows for a spring crop of those red beauties and the possibility of a fall crop. W of W allow us to put the tomatoes outside about thirty days early.

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, thanks for watching. For older plants, same thing. They still have the ability to grow a proper cuticle and strength in their stems no matter the age. They can always be hardened off, even later in life. :-)

    What you did not explain was going from indoor lighting to greenhouse is a step that may or may not be a slow transition. This transition is dictated by type of material for greenhouse: glass, poly, plastic. From there you can go to direct light, slowly increasing daily, then back to greenhouse for diluted but still consistent light.
    Try to discuss since you have a greenhouse.

    Does the process reverse? I spent a week hardening off then it got cold for a few days. Then I got sick and unable to take the plants in and out so now it’s been a week of no hardening off. Is the first week just lost?

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but its not a straight trade off. If the plants have begun the process, they can for sure become weak again....but its not instantaneously.

  • @hamsicle

    I'm lazy. When I want to harden off my plants, I wait for an overcast day. If I can get two back to back even better. Generally I do a half day for the first and then a full day for the second. I don't have the patience for the 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours etc. Two or three overcast days is all you really need.
