  • John Wayne, famous for his onscreen personification of the quintessential American hero, was fascinated by the legend of the Alamo. His 1960 production of the epic story of the 1836 Battle of the Alamo premiered in San Antonio. His daughter Marisa Wayne, and his granddaughter, Anita Lacava Swift, talk about Wayne's dream of being able to tell the story of the Alamo and why he made such an enormous personal committment to making the movie

When I was young I asked my Uncle Bob how I should be- he told me to pick a couple of Actors, to which I picked John Wayne and Johnny Weissmuller, as Tarzana. This simple tool has helped guide me through my life. It was a blessing to have so many Great Actors when I grew up. Being 74 years old.

John Wayne did tremendous work and intense love in making his magnum opus “The Alamo”. From it two legends will be remembered. The men of the Alamo and of the Duke!!!

      Gigante umanitario...
Diede prova di quanto fosse "umanitario" quando aggredi' Piccola piuma in occasione del rifiuto di Marlon Brando dell'Oscar per protesta in difesa degli indiani.
Wayne era un suprematista bianco,in poche parole un razzista coglione...

What I remember of the show, "The Alamo", he did the history some justice with how the movie was produced.
I always was, and still am a fan of John Wayne, and was saddened when I heard of his death. He was to me, like Elvis Presley was to his fans....BIGGER THAN LIFE. And if anyone knows about the way he acted, I felt like he knew his roles before he actually filmed them.

Want to THANK John Wayne & his family. We in the US are running out of PATRIOTS! Everything in society is Me, Me ,ME ! Whatever happened to WE, as in WE THE PEOPLE? As an old-timer myself I'd like to THANK Mr. Wayne & others like him who inspired confidence in our country at tough times when we most needed it! Take a look around. Where ARE we headed? The world is a tinder box & people want to keep lighting FIRES instead of putting them out? Duke, if you're listening, please pull a few strings & see about sending America a true LEADER, we have too many politicans dividing the country instead of keeping it together!___GOD BLESS AMERICA___

    We loved your Daddy, ladies!
Some of the story of “The Searchers” came from my Texas ancestors direct participation with the Cynthia Ann Parker kidnapping by the Comanche. My Great-Great Grandpa was married to Cynthia Ann’s cousin Rachel Parker (Plummer).
She & son James were also captured in that Indian raid of May 19, 1836-2 months after the Fall of the Alamo.
God speed to the John Wayne family.

I remember reading an article about the issues that beset the production - John Wayne's financing worries, the murder of one of the minor female cast members, the problem of rattlesnakes on a filming location backlot, clashes of temperaments between a couple of principal actors- it's a wonder the Alamo was ever made.
Then there was the tacky post production campaign to promote Oscar nominations - which didn't work thankfully.
    Still a great film though.

The only thing I'm sorry about John Wayne is that he never made a movie with Gary Cooper. The two were the greatest Western movie stars of all time. I think that had they been born 30 or forty years later, they would have played more roles with the native American Indian being the good guys.

Sorry I don't agree with the 1960 movie and the actors picked to portray certain historical people..but he was and is a very good and great man. The 2000 Alamo movie is more accurate to how many of us Mexican Americans believe except for the Santa Ana depiction that is too negative

As I agree with you about the 2004 version being very historically accurate, and I thought also will made. The one thing I thought that it lacked was a spirit and a pride that made you proud to be an American. And that was John Wayne’s version did for me just my opinion.
