Trump loves Japan, wants to keep the Japanese-American trade deal, and will keep on with protecting Japan from invaders. I think it wasn't the handshake per se, it was the misunderstanding the " Please, look at me!" that incited it.

Apparently the Japanese photographer meant 'Look at the photographer's way" but President Trump misunderstood Prime Minister Abe's translation as "Look at the Prime Minister". It is common in Asia for public figures to adjust their positions so photographers can get a picture that shows the public figure is looking at their camera. : )

Yes it does look awkward at first but if you watch the video again, Trump says to Abe what did they say Abe reply's please look at me, referring to the Japanese press, Trump looks at him instead with a strong hand shake but Trump is genuine, I can see it in his eyes and smile.

dkim2011 you couldn't be more wrong. Abe mistranslated what the Japanese press was saying. Onegaishimasu, means "please do ...". In this instance they were asking the PM and POTUS to look at their cameras specifically. But Abe froze after saying "please" as he thought of how to translate the full meaning. This created a pause before he finished with "Look at me", which then sounds like two separate sentences in English with 'me' being the PM. After Abe finishes his translation he looks away from Trump, while Trump looks at him (thinking that's what he was supposed to do) then they switch and then they actually look at each other. It's an awkward exchange as they tried to figure out what to do in this little misunderstanding.
dkim2011 I'm not saying that what you presented as 'polite' was wrong in general but in this instance, it was. What happened between Abe and Trump during this meeting happened because of a mistranslation. I've been studying Japanese for several years now and understand how little things like pauses or emphasizing words change the meaning of a sentence. Especially when translating between English and Japanese as I have messaged tons of Japanese people and have had to correct their English as they correct my Japanese. Japanese is a tricky language to translate into English as it's a bit of a 'general idea' language. Meaning a single word like "onegaishimasu" can be translated TONS of ways depending on the context, so I can see why Abe had to think about it for a second. If you google the translation for "おねがいします" you'll probably get 'please'. But if you watch Japanese tv with subtitles you see it translated often times as 'thank you', 'if you would, please' or 'do X'. It just makes sense based off of everything I know of the language and translating to English.

Abe is actually hoping to work very closely with Trump as he wants to militarize Japan and Trump has been the first President to plainly comment on the matter with full support. Abe was probably very nervous as any meeting with Trump could make or break his hopes of making Japan more independent
dkim2011 I wouldn't say 'erratic' and he's not exactly 'unpredictable', definitely not 'extremely erratic'. Rather, 'casual' or 'uncensored' maybe 'transparent'. But whatever you call it, it works. As you said, foreign leaders have to exercise caution. He even told Iranian president he'd "better be careful". Without any hesitation, too.

And the prime minister said "please look at me" so trump thought he meant look at him, not the cameras. lol not being awkward, just miscommunication. And they also were asked to shake hands for the cameras, he wasn't forcing it.
