  • Obama, Japan's Abe to Seek Reconciliation at Pearl Harbor:
    Putting 75 years of resentment behind them, the leaders of the United States and Japan are coming together at Pearl Harbor for a historic pilgrimage to the site where a devastating surprise attack sent America marching into World War II. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit Tuesday with President Barack Obama is powerful proof that the former enemies have transcended the recriminatory impulses that weighed down relations after the war, Japan's government has said. Although Japanese leaders have visited Pearl Harbor before, Abe will be the first to visit the memorial constructed on the hallowed waters above the sunken USS Arizona.

    I had two great uncles and a grandfather fight in the Pacific in WWII. One great uncle fought in Burma and died there. My grandmother hated Japan for her entire life -- but things are different now. Japan is a wonderful country and a great ally of the United States. Much love from New York.

      Well if you refer to "country" it has always been an amazing country... just because a military regime at that time provoked aggression has nothing to do with the people obviously... Thats also the biggest controversy about the bombing of hiroshima and nagasaki that one side says well the war at least ended and further casualties within the war were saved and the other side says yeah but tens of thousands of innocent civilians died...

      For those crying about Nanking don't understand the politics. Politicians like Abe and Obama don't care about the victims. It's all about establishing a better relationship to profit each other, and in this case it is to restrain China's aggression in recent years. So if you criticize them for being "fake" or some shit, the thing is they know damn well they're fake. All they care about is the profit. That's how the world works.

      A formal apology from Japan *would* be nice. Everybody, even so-called "neutral" Switzerland got payed by Japan as reparations. Everybody except the US. Sure, we bombed them, twice, but there was no way they would stop any other way. And we warned them first, so. Anyway, *we were attacked first* and we got no formal apology. This is the closest to it we have gotten. Shinzo Abe was a GREAT leader, don't get me wrong, but since you mentioned apologies...

      @@rogueklyntar8238 yes, I am German and I agree with you. Here in my country we know what went wrong in the past and we deeply feel regret for what happened in the past because of our nation. However, I think America should also apologize for bombing Japan. As you mentioned it’s probably true that it was a (still very controversial) decision to end the war with lesser deaths on both sides, given a surrender would have been unlikely in another scenario. But in the end those bombs WERE dropped and so many died. America and Japan both need to apologize to each other.

    Regardless of how we all feel about Barack Obama and what he did/didn't accomplish while as President, can we at least all agree that OVERALL (cause every President does have some failures) the United States of America is in a better place because of his presidency?
    I am a democrat but I will put political bias aside for this critique (for the most part). Yes, ObamaCare did have its problems, the national debt nearly doubled, Guantanamo Bay has still not been closed, ISIS became a military problem, North Korea is a bigger threat than ever, and shootings are seen as a bigger/more common problem in our society today. Also, he pledged to bring the political parties in Congress together and be a unifier President, but (whether it was his policies or the decisions by the Congress) that didn't happen. There were plenty of failures during the last 8 years, even his biggest supporters won't deny that.
    With that said, he does have many accomplishments, even with these failures; millions of people now have healthcare, Osama Bin Laden and many terrorist leaders are dead, the wars started by George W. Bush ended, Guantanamo Bay's prison population has been reduced to only a handful, and race-issues can't just be ignored like they used to be in our society. The unemployment rate is lower than it was during George W. Bush's 2nd term, the auto, banking, and housing industries have recovered from the greatest crisis since the 1930s, we have begun re-establishing relations with Cuba and Iran for the 1st time in decades, and the U. S. brought the whole world together on global climate change agreements. Furthermore, every LGBT citizen can legally marry, more states have legalized medicinal marijuana, women's pay wage gaps have decreased, he put 2 women on the Supreme Court, and millions of Hispanic and Islamic immigrants have become citizens. These were a lot of difficult issues to deal with in just 8 years, and even when the majority of politicians and citizens disagreed with this man he never gave up trying to make our country better despite many setbacks.
    Overall, was Barack Obama a perfect President? No, I will admit that he did have some failures, though he shouldn't be blamed for every bad thing that happened during his Presidency. Is the country as a whole better off now than it was in January of 2009? Yes, but we still have more we need to come together on (Democrats, Republicans, and Independents) to keep making progress to improve the lives of every American. Finally, in terms of being the 1st African-American President, he did the best he could despite the prejudice and racism he faced. Plus, regardless whether you personally liked this man or not, he leaves office with a decent approval rating with more people liking him than those that don't.
    While we don't know how many of his accomplishments or failures will be remembered in the near future, as a whole Barack Obama will be seen as the 1st African-American President that made this country better than it was when he started despite opposition and uncertainty; that (in my opinion) will be his legacy!

    People, I really try to understand Obama, but I can't. In this speech he says, "we must reject 'tribalism'". I truly don't know what the hell is referring to. What does he mean?

    • @lopants7981
      @lopants7981 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It is the tendency to only associate with people and have strong loyality towards others who are the same and to reject people who are different. If you don't understand something, you could try doing research or looking it up. Google is easy to use: trib·al·ism
      ˈtrībəˌlizəm/Submit
      noun
      the state or fact of being organized in a tribe or tribes.
      derogatory
      the behavior and attitudes that stem from strong loyalty to one's own tribe or social group.
      "a society motivated by cultural tribalism"
      synonyms: sectarianism, chauvinism; esprit de corps
      "the latest waves of violence were blamed on tribalism"

    • @lopants7981
      @lopants7981 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He is referring to this tendency in many humans, but there has been a huge resurgence of it in American culture/society. We were making progress in recognizing that we are all Americans first no matter your ethnicity, gender etc...but there has been a shift to only validate the people who look and think exactly like you do. It is something that is happening in all areas. If you surround yourself with people who look and think just like you then it makes it difficult for you to understand and have empathy for other positions. You can see this happening in our current political climate on the conservative and the liberal side.

    • @openmusic3904
      @openmusic3904 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Surely to deny tribalism is deny our biology and how we evolved as pack mammals for thousands of years. Do you remember when the Catholic Church tried to deny the innate instinct that is human sexuality by banning masturbation, denying sex outside marriage, and making priest go celibate. How is asking humans to deny tribalism any different? It is fundamentally trying to supress human nature. People tend to congregate with people of the same race, religion, and values. This is completely natural and evolution encourages it, when you create societies that are a mash of different races, religions, and value systems nothing good comes out of it. It simply makes people retreat even further into their packs and ever escalating conflicts ensue. Obama asking us to deny tribalism is no different than asking a young man not to think about sex, for humans in their present state of evolution it is a unattainable, utopian fantasy and is completely unrealistic.

    Well, the pool sailors have been killed by the IJN without any prepration, and 75 years later Abe came and said "Rest in peace, braves, the men who killed you are our braves, so you should respect them".
    That's cool.

    Jeez, is it gonna kill Abe to say sorry? Americans paid for the war, which Japan started, with our Blood and Treasury... rebuilding the very country which attacked us, first. Enough with the damn kabuki dance: say sorry, and be done with it. Coming all this way... and purposefully NOT saying sorry... is like picking a fight, all over again.

      sheridanbucket when will america apologize about the nuclear bomb?

    • @sheridanbucket
      @sheridanbucket 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      AFTER Japan apologizes for starting the war, and AFTER Japan apologizes for ALL of its atrocities against humanity across that entire theater of war. THEN, and only then, will America consider an apology for bringing the war to an end, using the atomic bomb (which if Japan had, they would not have hesitated to use, themselves)!

    Abe should follow the example of Hatoyama Yukio and visit the Nanjing memorial for the victims of Japanese aggression. Japan must make peace with its Asian neighbors for the sake of the Japanese people. Btw, my grandfather was a Japanese military man who was stationed in China.

    Dispute my very heavily disliked of Shinzo Abe and his policies former Japanese Prime Minster Naoto Kan blames Shinzo Abe for the Fukushima nuclear disaster because Naoto Kan's party was in a Coalition with the LDP at that time so needed his approval If there was going to be a evacuation and Naoto Kan said that Shinzo Abe just laughed it off like it was nothing

    as a Japanese I don't undrestand what Abe wants to say,lol.maybe I think shice these days China has become NO1 Japanee trade partner, he is just bubbling because he doesn't want to sound like as if Japan is aologizing to USA. Japan has been always saying the word apologize to China and Korea and other Asian countries,so now they became strong and they really hate Western countries which colonized their countries before pearl harber. that must be the reason abe refrain from using the word apologize this time.

      keiko-san,
      TH-camで、”そこまで言って委員会、南京”、または”
      南京大虐殺証拠写真を検証する 2007年9月29日” を検索してください。
      これをみれば、南京大虐殺やその他の事の多くがウソだったと理解できますよ。
      南京大虐殺は100%ウソですが、その他の事件については、何が本当で何がウソか、判らないのモノが多いのが実情です。

    • @keikotunoda426

      masa さんへとにかく世界遺産登録されてしまった南京大虐殺について今更なかったということは、日本のイメージダウンです。南京大虐殺がなかったと言っている人たちは、登録される前にもっと一生懸命活動してほしかったと思います。それよりはこれから登録される慰安婦について登録されないよう頑張って欲しものですね。 それともわざわざ登録されるまで黙ってて登録後の騒ぎ日本のイメージダウンを図っているのでしょうか?

    • @sammatsumoto2182
      @sammatsumoto2182 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      何故、"日本のイメージダウン"とお考えですか?
      日本は海外への発言力が弱い事と、毅然とした態度を取る事が出来なくなっている事が問題であって、一度登録されたモノを撤回させる事も可能でしょう。
      世界に対してきちっと説明し、毅然とした態度をとらない事が、”日本のイメージダウン”を招いてますよ。
      間違っている事は、間違っていると毅然とした態度で云い続ける事が、本当の信頼関係を築く上で一番大事です。

      多分、Keikoさんは大事な事を知らないんでしょうね。
      今、多くの外国に住む日本人や日系人の子供達が、南京事件や慰安婦の事でイジメにあっています。特にUSやオーストラリアで。これらの嘘を言い続けているのは、韓国、中国、そしてその他の国々の左翼思想をもった人たちなどです。
      この卑劣なイジメをなくす為にも、正しい歴史を伝え続ける必要があります。
      USのトップリーダ達は、既にこれらの嘘を認識しています。
      「満州国保持のため戦争した」とありますが、なぜま満州が大事だったのでしょうか?もう少し考えてみましょう。そしてコミンテルンの事も勉強しましょう。
      確かに、満州や中国における政治的判断や、軍事面での戦略は間違いだらけです。その間違いをおかした理由にコミンテルンの存在があります。そして、満州から撤退していたとしても、別の無理難題を吹っかけられていたでしょう。
      世界の中で、ウソの歴史を認め、謝る国(国民)は日本だけです。だから、他国にウソをつかれるんですよ。そして、国連やユニセフ、または昔の、国際連盟が正しい事を行っていると思う事は、大変ナイーブな思想ですよ。

      sam san 私は国連等が正しいとは言っていません、ただ、ドイツではガス室はなかったとういう人たちは刑務所送りになっています。日本はまだ言論の自由がありますが、ドイツでは第2次世界大戦中におこったことに対する反論は全く許されていません。ま、買ったもん勝ち。勝てば官軍ということです。ただ、私もいじめにあってる外国の日本人のことは聞いたことがありますが、たしかそれは慰安婦像が立った地区の話だったと思います。慰安婦については中国と韓国が世界記憶遺産登録をさせるように常に努力しているのですがまだ実際には登録になっていまいので、反論があれば今のうちにしたほうがよいでしょう。いずれにしても世界が決定してしまったことについての反論は無駄なだけではなくイメージダウンです。 正しいか正しくないかは残念ながら関係ありません。

      Tell all that to the dead Americans resting beneath the Prime Minister's feet and all the way to Tokyo! I shall always remember, as you should too. 75 years later, and the moral imperative of an apology is still not forthcoming. This is the same nation who will not accept their responsibility for the necessity of our bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Shame on all of them.
