I’ve always loved that Lockhart’s greatest ambitions are to rid the world of evil and start his own line of haircare potions and Harry defeats Voldemort and part of his family’s wealth comes from a relative inventing the Sleakeasy’s Haircare Potion. So ironic 😂

As for the Neville howler, he said "I ignored it, it was horrible". So I'm assuming that he got the letter in the great hall (probably first year for the 50 points), recongnized what it was, and was too scared to open it so he just hid it or something. Then later it exploded on him when he wasnt around many people.

"Harry, why do you always choose the blandest food??"
I have two options for this: either Harry can't handle food that it's too rich after being starved, or the Dursleys are so bland that he's used to it. I remember a fanfiction that said "The most adventurous the dursley's got was meat and three veg" and I was like "yeah that makes sense" lol
And about the mandrake leaf, also from a fanfic, I read that the marauders used a temporary sticking charm to keep the leaf stuck to their mouth as they ate. There's so many interesting theories you can find in fanfiction lol

I never thought about that scene with Collin Creevy asking for an autograph in this context before, but I think you hit the nail on the head without realizing it. Yes, Harry is a nice enough individual that had it happened in the common room, he likely would have said "sure, no problem." That is exactly what Lockhart is there to prevent being normalized. You mentioned that Malfoy and Lockhart happening to overhear it is the worst possible timing, but that's what Dumbledore wanted. Even if fame wasn't going to Harry's head at that time, he would have done these things out of niceness, and then they would have become typical and more frequent, and Lockhart is there to put a stop to that before it even starts.

Add the fact that Hermione cant really admit to being wrong about anything, which Ron points out in book three I believe, also makes her continue to make excuses for Lockhart throughout the book.

1:08:17 except in book three, snape explicitly says that he saw lupin running towards the tree on the accidentally left open map after he went into the office to give him his potion. So your theory of the muraders not appearing on the map for non-muraders could work, but perhaps they are visible to others only if the map is OPENED by one of the four.

In Britain double barreled names are quite common, hyphanated or not. It's typically when both families have a level of notoriety (or out of wedlock) but you don't need to be deserving of a title for it. The 11 year old voldemort actors name is fiennes tiffin, one side his father family (tiffin) and the other his mother (fiennes) but he's just an actor with no right to a title.

Lockhart's talk with Harry really demonstrates the extent to which he does indeed believe his own lies. The whole reason he posed with Harry at Flourish and Blotts was to make use of Harry's fame to get on the front page. Then by the time they meet again Gildoroy has convinced himself he was doing a favor to Harry and has mentally appointed himself as fame mentor and Harry as his apprentice celebrity. Aa role he naturally assumes Harry will be happy to take on.

I really like the delivery of "twelve years!" by Sirius because you can really see his level of exasperation, being like "you're telling me you can't see how this all fits??" It really speaks to Sirius' intelligence in a way that doesn't happen too often over the course of the books. Like, the main qualities Sirius is known for are his bravery and loyalty to the point that it's easy to forget he and James were also extremely talented, capable and intelligent men, and among the best wizards of their generation.
I guess my point is that Sirius is such a good man that it often overshadows how much of a powerful, shrewd, and effective man he is.

Neville may have gotten a howler in the 1st year when he had detention for being out of bed with Harry and Hermione and ended up having to go do his punishment in the Forbidden Forest. The others were pretty preoccupied at the time, Ron stuck in the hospital with a dragon bite and everything, so they may well have missed his howler. Hell, its Neville, he may have gotten it and known what it was so grabbed it and tried to run as far away from people as he could and had it blow up on him when he was by himself.
The thing about Eton, it is like the secondary school equivalent of getting into Harvard (or Tokyo U in Japan as portrayed in anime)... it is like the elite of elite finishing schools, with people like Prince William and Prince Harry and former Prime Ministers David Cameron and Boris Johnson having attended. So Justin Finch-Fletchley getting accepted means he is incredibly posh and likely rather intelligent.
Also the thing with Colin Creevey made me think about how you always complain that Fred and George didn't know Dean Thomas... throughout the books Harry knows all of the boys in his year and only 3 of the girls in his year, but he knows very few people in other years, even amongst the Gyiffindors. In his first year Harry knows Percy, Fred, and George because they are Ron's brothers, Lee Jordan because he is the twins' best friend, Angelina Johnson, Alicia Spinnet, Katie Bell, and Oliver Wood from Quidditch, and nobody at all in the 6th or 7th years despite them all sharing the same house common room. Cormac McLaggen is apparently the same year as Katie, but they seem to be oblivious to him until he tries out for Keeper. In the 2nd year he knows Ginny because she is Ron's sister and meets Colin Creevey, the only other student from that year he ever talks about is Luna and he doesn't meet her for several more years. So it seems like it may be normal to only know the kids from your year, particularly those you share a dorm with or have classes with, and very little interaction with other years or other houses.
Budgies (budgerigar) are what we in America refer to as parakeets. Which is technically a small parrot, since parrot is a large and diverse order of birds.

The Howler possibly came because of loosing the Rememberal, he states in OTP that he losses it, it's never stated when nor do we get any confirmation that Neville actually gets it back after Harry catches it, it's implied yet never specifically stated.
Plus Nevilles preceived lack of magical ability and insecurities I reckon stems from his Grans excessive emotional belittlement of him and comparing him to his Dad which would cause an issue and then he's in the same year as Harry so even more comparing likely occurrs.

My theory regarding the twins not seeing peter sleeping next to ron is that peter is out and about the castle just like the night harry saw Peter on the map. It must be pretty boring to stay in one place all the time. I'm sure he knows how to use the room of requirements as well since the maurders were pretty prolific in their exploration of the castle. The room might just be unplottable as well. Also, the twin wouldn't have reason to stare at ron's name every time they open the map. Final point, how does multiple stories work, does the name appear stacked on top of one another, or is each floor on a separate fold of the map? I was thinking maybe the tower of all the students sleeping was bunched together? you'd also have multiple people within one room, couldn't they have just mistaken peter as a classmate of ron's sleeping in the same dorm as him? It's not like they have a reason to ask or talk about their dorm mates.

Pretty sure they say in the movie that it wasn’t the mandrakes that made Neville faint - they imply that was just his reaction to seeing the mandrake, just out of shock or disgust or something. “Longbottom’s forgotten his earmuffs.” “No, mam. He’s just fainted.”
Which honestly is even more insulting to Neville.
And yeah, I always assumed second years start with baby mandrakes - before they’re potentially fatal - and then later in the year when they’re more complicated/dangerous maybe Sprout would normally have her NEWT class working with them or something.

It makes perfect sense to me that Hermione wouldn't see through Lockhart's BS. As someone who values learning, she trusts and admires her professors (maybe not Snape/Trelawny) above everyone else. Not only that, but Lockhart is famous and lauded among wizard society as a whole AND he was personally vetted by Dumbledore, the greatest wizard to have ever lived in Hermione's mind (and also maybe actually..?). Hermione is really smart, but she's book smart and not necessarily streetwise and even being as smart as she is, she's still a 12 year old girl. Even if she was Lockhart doing some questionable things or making seemingly dumb mistakes, she might just assume that she just doesn't know or understand enough about the topic to see why Lockhart is doing whatever it is he's doing and just give him the benefit of the doubt. Literally everyone in her life is telling her to trust and believe this guy lol.

I'm reminded when you two mentioned Hermione transfiguring the bettles to buttons, it always bothered me that a living thing could be turned to a non living thing or visa versa. I feel it should be exclusive to that like beetles to birds or buttons to coins or something. Also kinda bothers me on the inanimate side is what about a plastic thing to a wooden thing or metal thing. Like the philosophers stone does random metal to gold metal but I don't recall gold ever being described as having magical properties so why is it exclusive to the stone..anyways a plastic chair turned into a plastic desk of equal material for example makes sense to me.

I think your greatest achievement, or at least the one that I like - despite all the success you've had as youtubers, not only have you stayed in roanoke (many creators just move out to LA) but you've used your platform to help elevate local roanoke businesses, like the coffee shop, or participating in local roanoke festival/event things. I think that's super amazing. I think you also source locally for some carlin bro mercantile items as well?

    • @PositiveOnly-dm3rx
      @PositiveOnly-dm3rx 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Uh no. Almost no creators move to LA. MOST move FROM LA to the midwest because when you can work anywhere, you have no reason to live in one of the most expensive places on earth. If they were moving to LA then they wouldn't be in those giant bedrooms they are in. They would be paying 10x as much to live in a tiny studio apartment.
Where do you people get this stuff?

I love hearing the American perspective as I pick up references and don't think twice about them. Eton is an all boy boarding school for the elite. It's where royalty and prime ministers tend to go. It's basically telling you that Justin is from a posh, upper class, wealthy family. I think it's an interesting contrast to Colin a few pages later whose father is a milkman, a very working class job. We have (or had) a more clear cut class system and JK is showing everyone at least from a muggle background is equal at Hogwarts.

I am one of the people that first watched the movies without the intention to ever read books and I'm here to answer the question about the mirror from the end of this episode (from my perspective). Like everything else that's very important for the story but left out of the movies, it just left me confused. I like to think about the movies in depth (which is why I looove your channel and this podcast), and I was left confused by so much in the HP movies. I would compare it to how you might now feel about the FB movies with all the 'wtf, how did he do that, what even is that, why is this not explained,' and I wanted a better explanation than 'it's magic'. So basically, if you don't read the books, you are either left super confused or you just go with 'it's just magic' and move on with your life. In my personal experience, I couldn't appreciate the Wizarding World at all until I read the books and saw how many details that actually give the story its depth were left out of the movies.

My aunt is experiencing the books for the first time via the audiobooks. I think she’s still on book 1 but I got to tell her about stuff they left out of Goblet and HBP. One of the first questions she asked me was about the pronunciation of Voldemort’s name and I explained that it’s French and the t is meant to be silent.
Incidentally I saw some of the audible reviews of Book 4’s audiobook saying that Jim Dale pronounces it wrong and I’m over here like “no…no that’s how it’s supposed to be pronounced. The movies got it wrong”

@@Boundwithflame23 I hope she rereads the books again, too! Because I made a pause: I watched the movies, then started looking up answers to all the questions I was left with, then I figured out most of those answers start with "well, in the books" so I decided to read the books, then while reading the books I thought they did well with the movies, but I thought that because I had already forgotten most of the confusion movies created for me (the movies only got the events shown but not the explanations), then when I finished reading the books and watched the movies again, that's when I actually saw how much the movies play down the entire story, there's just so much more to it. I understand that the movies couldn't fit all of it in, but I don't think people would mind 6-hour long movies. And rereading the books over and over just pushes you to think more. I hope you talk to your aunt about it like J and Ben do, it's one of the best things about immersing yourself in the HP world.

I theorize that Harry likes bland food (potatoes, porridge) because that's the sort of thing Aunt Petunia served. These seem like very un-magical, Dursley-ish foods. It's like that was the one way in which the Dursleys were really able to exert an influence over Harry and make him one of their own.

But then Dudley has bakon with eggs for breakfest. It's just a matter of taste in my opinion. Not veryone thinks potatoes or porridge are bland.

My thoughts about Neville getting a howler in year one could be attributed to him trying to warn the trio about Malfoy knowing where they went to release the dragon Norbert (a) to Charlie's friends. He was going to head them off. But he got caught out of bed after dark and suffered detention with Malfoy and the trio. They were all at breakfast next morning, but Neville might not have sat next to them. Not that that matters with a howler. But at that point the trio were subdued and they might have been too wrapped in misery to take notice or care.
From a writer's standpoint, a howler from Neville's Gran wouldn't have moved the story along.

I think Harry chooses the blandest foods, because this is his normal. He gets the scraps at the Dursleys. Harry had trauma and it takes time to be open enough to try things or change habits. Harry goes to his normal perhaps. What fills him up, nothing like a baked potato and it wouldnt be something the Dursleys would miss.

Neville definitely the Howler for when he was caught out of bed with Harry and Hermione and got detention and a combined150 points taken away from Gryffindor. That’s what makes the most sense. Yes he was with 2 other people but that wouldn’t matter to his grandmother and the enormous expectations that pressure she puts on him to be like his father and mother. Him losing points being out of bed and getting dentition would be seen as insult to them in her eyes.
