  • We test and review Microsoft's new Surface Studio all-in-one PC, putting it front of cartoonists and graphic designers to see how the 28-inch touchscreen compares with digitizers like Wacom's Cintiq. Here's what we think about the Surface Studio's display, compact computer hardware, and unique hinge that connects them.

    Correction: Surface Dial and related apps support handedness settings, but wasn't working in our review unit.

      I just ordered a Surface Studio to be my primary DJ console with the Djay Pro app. This will take the place of two direct drive motored hard drive based turntables I have been using (Numark HDX’s). While it’s time to catch up with the digital times I just can’t allow myself to be a “laptop” DJ so I am excited to think this Surface Studio will meld both the tactical hands on and digital needs together in a more updated style.

      @@xavierguzman4812 I also bought a surface book 2 for college, because I needed something with enough computing power to run very large data sets in R Studio! The laptop is amazing and is great for my school needs while also meeting all my gaming and personal entertainment needs 😁👍🏻!

    The fact that you actually got professional artists that are used to similar systems makes your review far better than the others I've seen. This is a specialized device so it was refreshing to see a fully-featured review that is actually relevant to the device's capabilities. Great work Tested!!

      Nah, they innovate by making a mac aimed at digital artists, then they will remove the touchscreen "so you dont get fingerprints" and then the keyboard keys will be touch sensitive or something so you draw on the keyboard. Basically, remove what's useful, replace it with some useless shit.

    I would like to correct a misrepresentation of the surface pen made during this review. The reviewer notes "the pen registers marks before the pen tip touches the screen". I am a heavy pin user on my Surface 4, and Surface Book and that behavior is just a bug that crops up every once in a great while, and it is easily fixed by just removing the battery power from the pen i.e. turning and pulling out the eraser pen assembly a little so that the battery contacts' disengage, and then reengage the battery contacts by reversing the previous step, and if that does not fix the problem then reboot the Surface. I noticed this problem when I demoed the Surface 4 and Surface Book at the Microsoft Store last year before it shipped. I thought it was a show stopper for me, but my quick thinking of resetting the battery power on the pen solved the problem during the demo! And like I said, it has only happen once or twice since then, and it is easily fixed as noted above. I have extensively demoed the Surface Studio at the Microsoft Store using the pen, etc., and definitely it will be my next computer purchase.

      Matthew Rath That is also true. As I said, this pc is ALL about the screen so selling the csreen by itslef is kind of illogical. It really annoys me how little RAM they include at the lower price point, and how expensive it is just to get more RAM in the thing. Photoshop is a RAM guzzler and in a computer designed for Photoshop and other Adobe products having an 8GB model at all is a complete waste.

    Norm, I was brought to Tested page some years ago when searching for Sony A6000 reviews and subscribed that very day. However, I did write a rather harsh comment complaining (not flaming) about your articulation not being up to broadcast standards. Well, let me set the record straight: Bravo! I mean freaking, "B-R-A-V-O!" he says in his best Trinity College Upper Class Twit Accent. Bravo my boy; I'm very proud how you've developed as a broadcast journalist.
    On a final note, don't be afraid to up your compression during your This is Only a Test segments. You've developed a marvelous mellifluous voice which might benefit from some more compression.

    As an artist with a surfacebook. It is SO frustrating coming from wacom
    1. no hover-right click, dealbreaker for most 3D apps like zbrush, 3ds max (software)
    2. the button is hella hard to press! pair with problem #1 and you get tendinitis (pen design)
    3. only one button, Wacoms 2 button index/thumb rocker is SUPERIOR (pen design)
    4. zig-zag wiggles when drawing diagonals slowly. Makes drawing circles look bad. (surface hardware)
    Otherthen these things I love my surfacebook it could have been the best ever. But these 4 dumb flaws make drawing frustrating, I have owned my surface book for 6 months

      Scott Vigil for the hover right click you can have a workaround installing RadialMenu (radialmenu.weebly.com). It's not perfect as a software but if you remap your pen button as a right click with it you will have a right click with hover as long as the software is running. I would also recommend exploring the radial menu, but that is something not everyone likes or need.

    Unfortunately, that pen dropping lines without still touching the screen actually is a huge dealbreaker. I'm sticking to my cintiq for now, i was hoping they would finally step up their game with the pen, since all of the other hardware is there, pretty big oversight imo.

    • @pellegew
      @pellegew 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's not a deal breaker. When this happens the pen needs one of 2 things. Pull out the battery or reseat the pen tip.

    • @IslandDreamer90049
      @IslandDreamer90049 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eric Pellegrini This may also be a software specific issue. I couldn't tell what he was using when that issue turned up. The little fish hooks in the ends of strokes is pretty common with most active pens.

    • @MrVisnet
      @MrVisnet 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rick Rodriguez could be, maybe it's not the case in for example photoshop. But from my experience with the surface pen, the pen needed an upgrade anyway, the wacom pens are just better and more reliable in terms of sensitivity. I mean it's close, but it isn't there yet.

    • @pellegew
      @pellegew 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sensitivity is completely programmable. There is a difference in activation pressure, with the pen having a higher pressure. Most people trying out the pen from Wacom see this as a sensitivity or reliability issue, when it's just a matter of adjustment. It's no different with actually pens and pencils, except in the real world you know that these differences exists.

    • @pellegew

      Rick Rodriguez Hi Rick. I've owned this type of Surface Pen since the SP3, and now a SB. It's not a software issue. It's just the pen. It happens often with the tip just needing to be reseated. Software draws when it's told to. It's the hardware sending the wrong signal.
      This is a known occurrence, and I'm surprised they didn't try and do the known solution. The computer has also been reviewed by many others and no one noticed this. Penny Arcade used it for weeks and it was fine. If it was a software issue it would effect everyone with the same software.

    This is a fantastically thorough and practical review, so much good information to take it. I would've loved to see a little more text on the screen whenever there's a lot of numbers or specs being thrown out just to help the information stick but other than that, no fancy camera work from The Verge's reviews can come close to how great this review is. Keep it up!

    I'm disappointed to hear about the shortcomings of the pen. This would have been a digital artist's dream machine, but alas, Microsoft needs to up their game if they want to take on Wacom. The pen itself also needs to be more ergonomic for use over long periods.

      not exatcly, pro wacom are a bit like pro apple,
      i have a cintiq but not a cintiq addict so i think i might actually use my pen more because of the size of that shit and the global interactive process.
      Also I know a lot of pro illistrator who already went over with the surface pro, so there s a chance the ll get half of us actually in many fields (graphic design, illustration, animation, contemporary art, 3d design, scultpure, music, video, etc...) I mean think of it, touching all the menu, i might not use my keyboard anymore, no matter if its Ps, Ai, Id, and also for Pr and Ae.
      But the button thing on the pen is annoying, and the dial should be thought well with all those app, they are actually talking about it with adobe from what i've heard. they did forgot about lefties and that's really annoying...
      for lefties like me..

    For about a year I thought that Apple were the best of the best and i saw microsoft laptops an PCs and just thought that it was terrible against Apple. But Apple aren't getting better or worst ( why the hell do we need a 'touch bar' $2500 just for a slimmer and a touch bar! its the same as the last one!) but Microsoft is now on top with the new surface range and VR! so I now prefer to get a Surface Book than a Macbook or a Surface Studio than an IMac or even a Surface Pro 4 than an IPad.

      I've been hoping to buy a Surface or similar device for decades. Everything seems to fall short of my expectations.
      In Microsoft's case, they have struggled to deliver on the nTrig stylus. Even the Wacom variant had unresolved stylus problems.
      I'll think it's likely that I'll be waiting for a few more product cycles before I get the computer of my dreams. If not for the pen issues, then due to a lack of horsepower.

    Looks beautiful. This seems like an amazing product for anyone who needs digitizer/touch ability. Buying it seems like a no-brainer when you see artists drawing in photoshop. However, when you switch over to playing games or using Premier, the touch ability kinda seems useless. I suppose the value of this computer comes down to the specific needs of the user. I hope they end up selling the screen separately, would be a giant competitor to Wacom, and utterly destroys the iMac.

    • @utarasone
      @utarasone 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If they only sold the screen, it wouldn't compete with the iMac. And compared the Studio as-is, a similarly spec'd iMac is about $900 less (comparing to the high-end model in this video). Granted, that iMac won't have touch and a pen, so you have to ask yourself if that's worth $900 more.

    • @zycane
      @zycane 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Of course it's worth the price, the pen and touch alone is worth way more than 900 bucks, especially when you compare it to the Wacom comparable Cintiqs. And they could obviously have room for both the AIO model as well the screen display standalone. This product not only dunks on Wacom and Apple in features and specs but also in price, for what you get.
      Obviously, if you don't need the pen and touch, you may not need the Surface Studio, then you might as well, get/build a normal desktop rig, because lets face it the iMacs aren't worth the prices, and never were to begin with.

    • @utarasone
      @utarasone 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mmm...but with the iMac, you ARE getting a 5K screen, so there's a similar situation as with the Surface Studio where you're getting sort of included value. Building a PC defeats the point of someone wanting 2-in-1, which is a valid desire.

      The Surface Pen is pretty good, though. It just isn't as good as Wacom pens or the iPad Pencil. Doesn't have to be. It's still very nice for producing artwork. I own several Wacom products, but it doesn't seem to stop me from liking the Surface Pro 4 pen.
      As others have said, they'll improve the pen in time.

    • @TherandusGaming
      @TherandusGaming 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      those issue's mention here were due to low battery in the pen, replacing the battery fixes the problem with the touching before touching problem and then takes full advantage of the pressure sensitivity. Though i think they did do an update sow when the pen is too low now, rather than doing that, it just stops working, so you know you need to replace the battery.

    Apple user since I started using computers as a Graphic designer. Always used a Wacom then got a Cintiq 13' - then 22'. Great Tablets but ended up going back to my Intuos and not Intuos Pro 3 is touch - wireless so could draw anywhere TV (couch) Then iPhone release everybody had one. No need for iPhone.
    Then Started using Microsoft and a simple spec PC after my Apple PowerMac G5 stopped letting me upgrade the Browser even Software and it was working perfectly. seeing all software I use looks the same in both systems, the cost in a high end PC vs Mac was so different.
    Microsoft released the surface and brought the Pro 2 and was in love with it my function and the way Microsoft had made its front end feel more fun to work with. Being touch and Pen friendly made it a dream. With the upgrades of the Surface Pro 3 - 4 simply amazing and I try to explain this is all you need if you want a tablet - its a tablet. KEY is that having a full PC is the hardest part to explain, so just happy using and talking with other users who have only great things to say.
    Seeing the Surface studio has got me planning my next upgrade. And I normally don't change my mind when I seen the best. Everytime I see a user with an iBook at a cafe I keep thinking if only they knew what life would be like using a better tool?

      There is no standardised human heights nor working desk.
      Thats where this device (and pretty much any pcs, all in one touchscreen) is limited of its capability despite its hinge being flexible and more adjustable than ever.
      So in comes desks with adjustable heights to accompany even more flexible, comfortable , adjustable as needed viewing/writing/working position and I do recommend adjustable seats for this beast of a workstation as well.
      For such a big (and expensive) devices, I am sure professional users can afford one in their home/office/studio or already have one due to their job anyway which requires staring at monitor(s) long hours or else build custom one if they can do so in their studio.

I can think of no purpose for it (because it's awkward to reach across a keyboard to touch small buttons) and it actually makes the screen have a very poor viewing angle. I'd recommend never getting a touch screen on a laptop unless you can fold the laptop over and use it as a tablet or something.

      No doubt - but they make far MORE money by making you buy the PC component WITH it - hence why they would be hesitant to sell it separately!

      Jason Evans As I noted elsewhere, MS wants some of the high-end market that Apple and Wacom have enjoyed for so long. I think Wacom's new 16" Mobile Studio tablet computer is a great example. $2,400 for the Mobile makes the Surface Studio (with a 28" screen!) look more affordable. BTW: For graphics people, the Wacom computer above has 282 ppi, making it the highest res system out there. Should almost look like a piece of paper on the screen. If only I were younger--and richer! lol

      BTW: Apple is still the dark horse in the race for "studio" supremacy. Although MacOS doesn't have touch capability built-in, they can *_still_* take advantage of Touch for running apps. I only mention this because of all the good things I've heard and read about the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil being such an excellent drawing experience.

    Insane review, and insane device. Good job! Really professional, and always interesting at every moment instead of talking for too long about a single feature.

    Why is everyone asking why doesn't this have kaby lake, why doesn't that have kaby lake? Do you guys not know that intel has only 6 kaby lake parts out currently, 3 15W and 3 4.5W parts and none have iris graphics nor are quad core. Blame intel not the manufacturers.

    At first, I thought that those 12:44 minutes was too long for what I was expecting to hear... but I found out that this is one of the best unbiased reviews I have watched so far. I wish that all those hardcore Apple fans would do their reviews the same way. Thank you.

      what part of this has apple done, apart from beautiful design?

    • @HoldFastFilms
      @HoldFastFilms 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Rezalty Price, non-upgradable, specs, form over function etc. You know, typical stuff people hate about Apple.

    • @WibrenVA
      @WibrenVA 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      +Hold Fast Shure, see your point. But for me personally i'm much more interested in this than I am in anything apple has done in the last 4 years, sure the things you said are true, but this offers a real advantage that the imac never did.
