As a hair stylist (who personally has slight wavy hair) I can’t stand how people are so opinionated about their curls! Just educate yourself and try what works for you, no need to be aggressive with others. Great video!
Great to hear that from a hair stylist! I hate it when people feel entitled to force their opinion on how I should style the hair that's growing on my head. If I don't ask for advice it's none of their business in my opinion.
Laia Branch can you tell me why redken shine flash 02 (glistening mist),still leaves my hair frizzy? I have curly/wavy hair, I out leave in conditioner spray, then gel and I used the diffuser, then the redken product
Why Why a glistening must or something that is meant for shine is just that! It’s going to give you shine not smoothness. Before I became a professional hairstylist I also had trouble with the meaning of descriptions for products. U need something for smoothing or frizz
"There are real struggles in life, and my hair doesn't need to be one of them." I love that. I struggle. I'm trying to find a middle of the road, healthy way to live with my hair.
The main curly girl rule I follow is no sulfates and silicones. I've seen a HUGE change in my curl pattern, definition, frizz, and shine since I've committed to it! Other then that, I don't really follow any of the other rules. I just prefer to use a sulfate free shampoo, and if I didn't diffuse my hair, it would literally take 12 hours to dry.
Hair that takes longer to dry is actually a sign of low porosity. Low porosity has super-tight shafts which make it hard to absorb pretty much anything. So, the water just kind of sits on the hair. Also, low porosity hair (especially curlies) tend to have a hard time with products, particularly heavy products, because instead of absorbing product like high porosity hair does, the product tends to just sit there weighing it down.
How long did it take you to get used to sulfate free shampoo?? I wanted to switch to sulfate free shampoo, but no matter how long I am washing the shampoo out of my hair, it just stays in some areas and it looks greasy.. I thought after some time it would get better, but unfortunatelly after a month I had to go back to sulfate shampoo. I still use silicone free conditioner and styler, though. I don't know what to do.
Giuliana Barbagallo I don't know actually. I've been using sulfates practically my whole life, but my hair is frizzy (especially in the back) and my scalp feels a little bit dry as well. That's why I wanted to try sulfate free shampoo, but unfortunatelly, my country is just unable to sell literally anything for curly hair. After months of searching I found 1 sulfate and silicone free shampoo..
I have very fine, low density (think thin) curly hair. If I piled all the conditioner on my hair that is recommended by so many CG method believers, it would be a flat mess. I have to shampoo my hair! I do use a sulfate free shampoo, and do not use silicones, but conditioner for cleansing and leave in conditioners are not for me. Thanks for pointing out that there are alternative methods of styling curly hair. It's true that every head of curls is unique.
I agree with you 100%. I was so happy to finally find the community on Instagram, but quickly lost enthusiasm when I saw the lack of pages with girls who have extremely fine and low density hair. So I decided to start a series on my own page dedicated to those who don't have huge, thick, full, voluminous curls. Not all of us do! And also, not all of us follow the CG method to the letter and I refuse to be shamed for it. I HAVE to shampoo my hair!! So I appreciate this video and I appreciate your comment. My Instagram is @CurlyCurvyPassion. Don't ever feel alone ♥
I have super baby fine, yet a dense amount of wavy hair. I also HAVE to use shampoo daily, otherwise I have a triangle head. My roots get flat and my ends poofy, lol.
I’m in the same boat. I’ve been CG for a few weeks but my fine low density hair is over moisturized and limp. I was traveling and experimented with a product I have used when blowing out my hair straight and got BOMB curls. I come to find out this product contains silicone. So now I’m rethinking the whole anti-cone situation. It’s great to find this video and channel to know that you can have great curls and blow out your hair occasionally. And some hair needs shampoo and silicones :)
Last March, I decided to let my hair grow out to its natural gray - white - silver - and a few darks thrown in for good measure. I also stopped blowing it dry and straight ironing. This was all due to the fact that after over 52 years of coloring my hair...I developed an allergy to the color. My hair began thinning and my scalp was horribly itchy. After repeated trips to the dermatologist and tests, and hundreds and hundreds of dollars later, I stopped everything...just like that. (I had super thick hair at one time...still have a good bit...but I was nervous about losing my hair.) Now, I am older than most of your subbies on here...I am pretty darn sure - will be 69 in July. But, I discovered that I love my curly silvery white-gray - whatever - hair. I have watched many of your videos to help me learn what to do with my hair and how to do it. I bought the curly hair book...and the new one for silver hair...I recommend both...I have had a Deva cut...the Ouidad cut...which I prefer...and I even cut it myself...just to get rid of some old color. What amazes me most of all...are the compliments I get about my hair...at the grocery store, mall, walking, etc...from perfect strangers...even a few men...LOL! It has happened quite often...but I am still amazed when it does. I just wanted to say that I think you're a super great speaker and role model for anyone wanted to embrace their curls. I don't believe that anyone method needs to be followed...just play with your curls and try different methods and products until you find one, or two, or three...whatever works. Thanks for helping an older curly girl get going on her curly journey. Hugs!
I don't follow the exact method. I go between co-washing and non sulfate shampooing. I use curl activators, gels and I defuse. My goal is definition with out excessive frizz. I like shine and use a product that helps with that. I cut my own hair...90% of the time it's a dry cut. I tried my old routine of blow drying and heat setting after about 6 months in to my waves and hated it. I also spent 3 years getting rid of the dye I've been doing for 40 years. My natural silvers and highlights are far better for my skin tone and eye color. I'm older than you by a lot...so maybe that is why I embraced my natural hair. There comes a time you are not fooling anyone and the dye just looks harsh and oddly un- realistic. Especially in the sun. :) I am totally natural and love my hair. The time and mess and expense is over and very freeing.
Gels and curl activators are actually CG approved (like the Cantu line or SM or NYM naturals) and the longer you go between washes is like being the Queen of the group lol but in reality I do cheat on the method too. Like if my hair gets really built up I use a sulfate shampoo to cut out the extra stuff
You are so right! I have naturally wavy/curly hair and have tried every method out there. I recently spent a fortune on "Deva" products and also "Curls" products, only to find they really were not life changing for me. I have found 2 drug store products that I always go back to...Schwarzkopf Gliss Hair Repair Ultimate Hair Repair leave in spray conditioner and Dove Quench Absolute Cream Serum for curly coarse hair. Use them everyday and only wash my hair once every 8-10 days...love these 2 products...they work for me and are cheap!
Hey. I'm interested in how you wash your hair every 8-10 days. It might be because my hair is too dehydrated but I cant go that long without washing my hair. it gets too tangled and it doesn't look as fresh. Sometimes I don't use shampoo and just wet it while in the shower as if I were washing my hair. I'm not sure if this is proper. Using a spray bottle doesn't work too well for me either since it takes so long to get my hair wet enough. Do you mind sharing how you maintain it for so long?
Have you tried lighter products specifically for wavy hair? I have a very tight spiral curl, 3B but because my hair is thin and I'm still half white, I need some thin thin products to have successfully bouncy, not frizzy and defined curls! Just a suggestion :) if you don't want to try that's totally cool! :) just offering help?
I have thick curly hair and not using shampoo just doesn’t work. I tried devacurl products for about 6 months with my hair being a greasy mess. Now I’m just using sulfate free shampoos, lots of conditioner, and using some of the methods like applying styling products when hair is soaking wet. My curls look awesome, I use a diffuser when i wash in the winter. Thanks for making this video. So much of the CG method seems like all or nothing, but really it’s about finding what works for you. Also, thanks for your tip on the darshana hair oil, that stuff is awesome!
I still shampoo. I'm more careful with the type of shampoo but I really want a quick clean down to the scalp. I don't have to do it more than every 4 or 5 days, but then I want it clean.
Well said. You’re very brave for doing this video because you’re totally right, people can be pretty aggressive about this subject. I’m another who has the book, has read the book & went hard at the CG method for what I think was a decent amount of time & in the end found it wasn’t for me. My hair became a “job”. I also found here in Australia we don’t have anywhere near as much CG approved products as they do overseas. In saying all that I’ve seen some beautiful results from the CG method in others, but just not my cup of tea. Again, well done ❤️
thank you, we sound really similar. Like you, I respect the results other get but there's no one size fits all. It's about combining tips to get your own method xx
Here, here! I am struggling to find anything for the curly hair products, mentioned by different Utubers. There is not much available here, in Australia, and the prices are forbidding!
I read the second edition of the book, where it says you can wash with a sulfate free shampoo. That's what I do, and then squish to condish but I don't leave the conditioner on, as in the book she says that for my hair type is best not to. Then I apply coconut oil, gel, clip and let air dry then diffuse. The curly girl brought my hair back to life. I do get a curly cut but modified to fit my hair and I do like to straighten it every now and then, and when I do that I go full on silicones. Also I let my stylist use all the products he wants, and blow it out, he always has something useful to say, some new product that may work for me. Besides it feels nice to walk out of there with a different look for once. So I do follow it product wise, but I'm relaxed.
after you use silicones, do you clarify with sulfate shampoo? I learned that silicones are not water soluble so the silicone build up needs to be removed with sulfate shampoo. What do you do? I start to hate this whole CG. My curls where better without it when I used silicones.
Yeah I don't do much to my hair and when I do the curly girl method or diffuse my hair or anything like that I end up looking like Shirley Temple. I prefer to have a looser more crazy curl texture. I don't want it to be all uniform I feel very lucky that if I simply diffuse my hair I can have that but I don't really care for that. All I do is wash my hair with the shea moisture shampoo with hibiscus and coconut oil then leave the shea moisture hibiscus and coconut conditioner in my hair while I wash my body or I just rinse it out immediately. Then I put grapeseed oil or olive oil or coconut oil, basically whatever oil I want or what's in front of me, on the ends of my hair. That's it that's all I do, I don't need some fancy routine with a million products.
I'm just finding your channel. OH MY GOODNESS!!!! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN THE LAST 4 YEARS OF MY LIFE!!!! This routine has been so difficult for me!! My hair is still so VERY dry, brittle, and just BLAH!!! On top of no heat!!! I do like to defuse my hair. I live in Illinois so it gets cold and I hate having cold wet hair! THE AMOUNT OF PRODUCTS YOU HAVE TO BUY and the work!!! I haven't watched all your videos but I'm working on it. Thank you so much!!!! I'm so thankful for finding your channel (looking for curly updos), btw I've read the cgm book
I've been watching lots of curly girl videos and it seems to me so much work, so many products and money, which is fine if you love it and enjoy it, but for me it doesn't work. Also I work out 5 days a week and I don't think it's healthy not to wash my hair and scalp after being sweaty, so washing my hair once a week doesn't work. I also think and I may be wrong that the people who have an elaborate routine with a ton of products haven't necessarily tried to simplify and narrow it down. I'm sure there's an easier way to get at least decent results, not perfect model curls that take a lot of work and expense and you don't want to ruin them. They're beautiful and there's nothing wrong with it but it's just not for me.
It doesn’t have to be. My conditioner costs £1 from Savers or Poundland (XHC banana, smells amazing and gives fab slip). I cowash with it, condition with it and leave it in. Scrunch with a t shirt. That’s it.
Omgoodness you are spot on with your advice! I grew up with naturally curly hair but didn’t embrace it until my 20’s. When I turned 44 I got cancer and lost my hair. It never grew back the same. I miss my curls but need to use a curling iron now or just put it in a bun. I used to be able to condition, gel or mousse, then let it dry natural and then just tease the roots and have beautiful curls. It has been distressing to me. I am 56 now. Recently I have started watching the curly girl videos wanting to try their techniques to see if I can eventually get results. After listening to you, I can embrace the fact that my hair has changed and that’s okay. I can still have fun fixing it and coloring it. I needed this. New sub 😊👍
I've been following the curly girl method for about 6 months. Before that I didn't even know that existed, and I was trying to grow out my curly hair and couldn't figure out why it looked so terrible all the time! Now I've found out that there's an entire science behind curly hair and it's a whole lot more work that I ever dreamed. That said, I think it looks pretty good most of the time and I get endless compliments on it. I do have to use a diffuser on my hair before it dries totally or it will look really odd. Really flat on top and the curls look like snakes! Also, even though I'm 62, I am no way ready to be gray. Every 5 weeks my hairdresser dyes my hair a fun shade of purple-y red and I love it. I do a deep condition every week, so my hair is pretty healthy. I'm always reading people on the curly girl method saying you're not supposed to color your hair, but that just doesn't work for me. I'm just sorry it took 62 years to figure out that I actually like my hair!! It made me so miserable when I was growing up.
This is your first video I’ve ever seen, and I LOVE it!! Thank you for such a wise, honest, and balanced approach to hair and curls. I had to shave my head due to illness, but before that I spent 6+ years following a highly modified CG routine. CO washing worked well for me, but I never got the hang of styling and really just couldn’t be bothered. I was also going for length more than anything else, so my only real goal was healthy hair. For me that led to a routine of CO washing once a week, finger detangling only, and (once my hair was long enough) always drying it in a bun to gently stretch out the curl pattern. I lived in buns, but once a year I’d air dry just to see what kind of curls I had. As my hair grows back I plan to go back to a similar routine, with more style experiments as I gain the energy to have fun with my hair again.
thank you for watching! Hope you're feeling ok now. I used to have a pixie cut and loved short hair. You can have a lot of fun with different styles while you're growing it xx
I have been following a „strict“ cgm for several years. My hair was okay. Not amazing but it didn‘t bother me you know. I just always had problems with damage still. Split ends, breakage, you name it. Eben though I didn‘t use heat, satin cap, scrunshies etc. I think I just have very sensitive hair. Right now I am at a very low point in my life healthwise and I deal with lots of stress. I don’t have time to tame my hair with 1000 products and I don’t really want to when there is so much more in my life that takes away my time and energy! So I started using silicones and heat again to make my hair more managable. And it is doing great!!! Maybe that will change but for now all I can say is: don’t stress out to much about your hair! There are so much more important things in your life. Plan your haircare routine to fit into your day not your day to fit into your haircare routine!
I came across your video while researching wavy hair care. I saw your amazing looking hair and wanted to see what you had to say. I admire the way you were able to state what you liked about CG and what didn’t work for you. That’s one thing I’m finding difficult in my hair journey or nightmare (depending on the hair day). Finding what works best for my hair. I also liked that you stated that you enjoyed coloring your hair and had no plans to stop. I too have no plans to stop! I’m going to check out plex technology next. Thank you again for your honesty and great advice.
Great video! I was really strict with the CG method for almost 2 years. I have tried several sulfate free shampoos and non silicone conditioners. While they do the job, there is NOTHING like getting out of the shower and having the clean feeling that sulfates give. I have several Aveda shampoos that contains sulfates, but I was hesitant to use them because of how bad of a rap sulfates have. I believe if you adequately condition your hair, sulfates are fine. ( I also have soo much more volume when I use sulfates)
Hey! I'm pro cg. Been doing the method for 3 months after years of loathing my hair, and it honestly has been a blessing for me from the very beginning. I swear I almost shed tears of joy after realizing how much curls I had. I only co-wash and condition after (I do this about once a week or less if I can stretch it), and right now I started deep conditioning. My hair loves it! I'm just trying to understand right now exactly what it needs since it still feels kind of dry, and also, right now, after the transition period my scalp is back to feeling clean like when I used sulfates, only it looks and feels so much better :) I agree with you that people should just stick to the routine that suits them best and not force their opinions on others. Personally I'm loving this routine cause apart from my curls actually being noticeable now, actually, being a lazy person, I just feel like I waste so less time since it stays good for longer and because I wasted so much more time on it before with the brushing (and it was damaging it). I've felt that this method offers someone like me who just didn't have a clue and doesn't have the time/patience to research deeply how to take care of curly hair some general advice that works on most curlies, and that I felt I could trust. And well, so far it has worked on me but what's important is what I've learned about hair through this journey and even if I quit it or end up changing the routine slightly I feel comfortable and happy with my hair now that I'm finding out what it needs :)
Thank you for posting this! I love that CG has inspired people to embrace their curls. But as a hairstylist who specializes in curls, I've been a little frustrated at times with how restrictive the method can be. Every curly head of hair is unique and has different needs, just as every head of straight/wavy/oily/dry/wiry/coarse head is unique. And while I recognize that a lot of hairstylists have done curly heads wrong over the years, and I need to earn the respect of a curly-haired client, I also hate to have my hands tied. It's great to have a conversation about what you have found works for your hair, what I think could work for your hair, and find somewhere to meet! Also, I have to say, the one thing I completely disagree with CG on is cutting. Structure is so important to a haircut. It is what gives it shape. Cutting individual curls, dry, one-by-one, might look good that day, but there are no guarantees those curls will choose to live in the same place tomorrow or the day after. I do like to cut curls dry, but with the same technique I would use on any hair type: with clean sections, a clear structure, and following a guide. It ends up combed out into a giant 'fro, but that helps me see the structure exaggerated, and I can compensate for changes in texture and pattern (which are most visible dry), while still maintaining a shape. (Then we shampoo/condition/style, so the client leaves looking great!) TL;DR: yay for curls, boo for too many rules.
I like that you don't prattle on forever about the same thing. You get to the point. I just recently started following the CG method and a lot of it didn't work for me but allow of it did. Glad you advocate to do what works for you. Also L O V E the simple little hairstyles that even a knucklehead like me can do!!! Thanks!
First of all you are BEAUTIFUL. Yes, I definitely follow a hybrid system, some things are too strict like you mentioned (I live in Canada and cannot air for most of the year) and some products that aren't cg approved can work really well with my hair type, and the wet cut has always worked for me, thank you for this video!
I've been doing beginner CG for two weeks, and I do love how much nicer my hair looks, but it is more work than I'm used to! I saw a video earlier today specifying FIVE different types of hair products that were MUST HAVES, and I closed the video. I don't have time for that. And I do love to color my hair, but so far, I'm really liking some of the basic hair advice I've gotten. Definitely going to read the book. Thank you!
I discovered this whole curly world when one day I was like I cannot be the only one that brushes my hair and still has a frizzy poof (found out the brush was the problem oh the irony) I started getting curly products and my curls have looked better then ever my only problem is for some reason the way my texture is my hair is wavy on top (like the crown and the part seen by everyone) and then super curly at the bottom so it never looks uniform. I don't think it's the methods fault though I think I just have a weird texture If anybody else has this really weird texture like me I suggest clipped up styles to where the wavy part of your hair is pulled away to show those lovely curls ❤
Rachel Walker I have a similar problem except it’s the opposite way round (wavy on the bottom, curly on the top). It’s natural for your hair to grow in different textures on your head so there is nothing wrong with it! But if it really bother you here’s a bit of advice. If you are very early in on the ‘journey’ and you have been heat styling and brushing your hair regularly it could be that the top part is the bit that has received the most abuse and is the most damaged. This will make it straighter. If that’s the case try a protein treatment to bring it back to life a bit. But it may be just the transition period making your texture a bit funny so wait a wee while (easier said than done I know). In the mean time if you have any sections that are really flat you can try pin curling them, you could also try the smashters method (there’s tutorials for all of these on YT) or even tight braids on top to match the rest of your hair. Hope that helps 😊
idk if this will help drastically but sprinkling some collagen powder in like oatmeal every morning is really good for your hair and nails and that might help with the texture
I have the same type of hair (wavy on top, curly towards the bottom) & I style my hair the same way most days! Otherwise I feel like my hair has an odd shape to it since it isn’t as curly on top!
PHEW! Thank you for posting this. I discovered the CG method, got the book, have been following it for a few months and I'm still struggling. Thought I was doomed to being imprisoned in my flat while my hair air-dried (4 hrs ish). It's so refreshing and such a relief to hear that it may not actually be the last word in handling curly hair. Some of the advice is great, but it's also common sense, such as not using harsh chemicals or too much heat. It's great to hear from someone that has perspective from both sides. I'll just take from the pieces of it that work for me and ditch what doesn't. Why I needed someone else to tell me that I don't know! :)
Thank you for your honest thoughts. I'm just starting to plan my curly journey and I don't want to become completely obsessive as some people seem to be. I also colour my hair and definitely won't be giving that up anytime soon! I just want to improve the volume and curl definition and reduce the frizz. Hopefully going sulphate free and more conditioning will do the trick along with some new styling products. I love the pinups that you have on Pinterest and your hair looks fabulous
Thanks for your video. I've been a curly girl for about 8 months. I struggle with all this so your video has helped me feel better about it. I've had keratin straightening treatments and just stopped because my hair still ended up frizzy in the humidity AND my hair started thinning a lot. Some of that is probably my age. I'm 65. I've not yet had a good cut, but have scheduled an appointment but have to wait another 2 months. My hair is really curly on the top layers and in the back, but not much on the sides. And then sleeping on the sides of my head makes it even straighter -- so I feel like I look like a poodle with 'ear flaps'. I'm working on how to have a nice style that flatters my face. I did try to trim my frizzy ends on my own since I have to wait so long for the certified stylist to do it. My hair forms lovely soft locks right after co-washing, conditioning, and gel, but usually the next day they get frizzy. It takes too long to co-wash and condition EVERY day, so I need to find that happy medium and enjoy it. I'm thinking I need to look more intently for a better gel product that will help me keep the locks. Any suggestions?
thanks Cathy! A gel definitely helps my curls form but I still need to refresh on day 2 & 3, and I usually put my hair up on day 3 and after. I find using a curl cream helps to tame my frizz on day 2 & 3. I mix a little with water and smooth that over my hair, twisting any curls that are a bit squashed. You can even use a little conditioner and water to do this xx
This is why you're my favorite curly youtuber :D you're so nice and honest and wise about what you share in your videos, I follow some things of the curly girl method, and it works for my curls, but some don't, and I hate the part where you cannot bleach or dye your hair, my natural hair it's black, but I bleach it and dye it ginger, orange, strawberry blond and all the tones that beautiful redheads have :) because I love that hair color, and everyone says it suits me and I love it too, I love to change my hair color and haircut, and I use a curly wand to define some of the curls of my hair, I saw you do this sometimes in some of your hair routines, so instead of "limiting" my self sticking 100% to the CGM and feeling bored with my hair, I made my own method, where I use the products that work for me and make what I want with my hair (dye it, bleach it or use heat) so I think everyone should try different methods and take the things that work for their curls and make their own method, even if it's not "right" for other people :) Your gorgeous hair made me feel like I can have beautiful curly hair even when I use heat and dye my hair, so I thank you so much for this and all of your videos, you're amazing :)
You can dye your hair and still do the curly girl method, the deva salon I go to almost every stylist there has their hair yied, I've had my hair dyed too they aren't against it..just have to acquire the knowledge care for your hair before and after the dye so the curls stay in tact 🙂
So I’ve been cg for almost a year and everyday I fall more in love with my hair. My game changer has been protein. And I agree with you. It doesn’t necessarily work for everyone and it requires commitment. It’s just healthy hair. I also advice every curly girl I meet to give it a shot. Just not to go over board and make it hard for yourself. As for the drying part, diffuser helps so much!! I love having soft shiny bouncy curls with this. There are cg safe dyes as well which will give a good color change. If anyone wants to straighten their hair sometimes, then sure!! Everyone loves change!
I'm so happy I found you! I have a hybrid curly hair routine! Sometimes I use deep conditioner, cowashes and no sulfate shampoos. Other times I love using products that have silicones, hair gels and curl creams, I love mixing it up ❤
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I stopped fighting it and went curly more than a decade ago. I read the book, tried to follow the routine, and my hair hated it. It does much better being washed every other day, and I vary my products by season. Like you, I'm always trying different things. And, I don't think I'll ever embrace my gray. I'll be a redhead until they run out of color!
Dry haircuts dont have to be uneven. Cutting hair dry is not just a Deva thing. My hair stylist has always cut my hair dry and he cuts it in long layers and it looks amazing. Nothing like the deva cut. He just knows how to do the cut with dry hair as much as with wet hair. Love this video! Thank you for sharing.
For me, it was easy to transition to the curly method because I stopped straightening my hair for 4 years now because I didn't like straight hair anymore and I personally don't dye my hair anyway. I don't care for the styling and whatnot. I had a love-hate relationship because my hair was frizzy and had no definition. Now using the Shea Moisture hair products, my hair looks a lot better! For now, I will religiously follow the CG method. But I am also glad I saw your video because if I decide to dye my hair in the future or straighten my hair I won't feel bad about it.
Well said! My curls are similar to yours and I also found the curly girl method too limiting. My hair is very thick, and it happens to love silicones. Everyone is different. Mine was stick straight until after high school!
Thank you so much for this honest post, and well done for putting yourself out there!! I hadn't ever heard of the Curly Girl method before, but I am with you that there isn't one solution that will suit everyone...it can be a lot of trial and error until you find something that more often than not suits you - I say this because there'll be those few occasions where your hair decides to go against you and just do it's own thing anyway!! Thank you for your videos, you've made me love my curly hair all over again!! 😘
Hi, I'm Jennifer. I Love the CG, but I use shampoo, the occational silicone, and straighten my hair from time to time. Different strokes for different folks! Great video! Love your hair!
Great video. I have been doing the CGM for almost a year now and have noticed a huge difference in my hair. My hair was always straight and I permed it when that was the thing. Loved it... then straight hair came into style and my natural hair fit right in. It started to get frizzy after I had my son 13 years ago and over the past 3 years I was having a really hard time straightening it. So I made an appointment for a keratin treatment and while I was researching how to make that last longer in my hair I found a rabbit hole called the CG method and canceled my keratin treatment and started the CGM the next day. I like how my hair is. Just big waves and a few curls thrown in... I color my hair and don’t see myself stopping that anytime soon. I have struggled with the ingredients of products a bit but I am getting better. I hate how expensive everything is and the couple curly girl hairstylist I have gone to really promote the organic natural products as if its a sin if I use anything else. I am not a huge fan of the deva products. They don’t smell that great and they build up in my hair quickly. I have to diffuse my hair in order to get the most out of my waves and have multiple day hair! Thanks for sharing and I will head on over to your blog to read up on some more info! Sorry this is so long!!
The main thing I follow with the CG method is no silicones and no harsh sulfates. I still use drying alcohols in hairsprays. I also dry my hair with a diffuser using heat. Or I sit under my standing dryer alternating between high, medium and low heat. I deep clean more often than others bc I swim. And I rarely cowash. Whatever people like best is good for them and their hair! 👍
LOVE LOVE LOVE!! Thank you for this video! When I went CG it burned my scalp and just wasn't for me and every CG forum I talked about it with kind of made it seem like I wasn't welcome because of being modified CG. I feel the same way, I like versatility with hair with color and heat and I'm not willing to stick to one routine completely. You explained it in such a nice way that doesn't make anyone feel bad for being CG or not being CG :)
I see a lot of people on YT follow the curly girl method and color their hair and others who just use affordable drugstore products with silicone. I have a kinky texture that is dry and low porosity (build up/ harder to get moisture in) so the curly girl method is a must for me. Silicone buildup means having to use sulfates or harsher detergents. But if you have a normal porosity and don’t have buildup or dry hair that resists moisture then I don’t think it’s as necessary to use the CG method. It was stressful for me at the beginning finding products that followed the rules, but now I’m used to it lol.
I have tried a few methods, curly girl included. I have always had very curly hair and always hated it, I spent years having brazillian blowouts etc to try and manage it and to have straight hair. When I met my (now) husband he saw a raer picture of me with curls and asked if I had had a perm. Needless to say the answer was no and he encourgaed me to go back to my natural curls. Since embracing them it is amazing how they have changed! It doesn't bother me as much when they are a bit frizzy or looking less than perfect, on those days I just wear them up. It's hard to believe how long and how much engery I wasted fighting with my hair. Now I use sulfate free shampoos and condition and treat a lot. I do still colour my hair, but would prefer not to...I just have to get over the 'grey hair makes you old' mind set.
I am now a subscriber! I've recently started watching youtubers with curly hair and hearing about this curly girl method. My mom is a hairdresser and I have been getting my hair done at a salon for years so I've always been using higher end products (whether they had silicones or slufate in them). The last year I started using Deva Curl products which I really loved. But when it is so overwhelming and know what products to get and the idea of no shampooing my hair scares me a bit because I get a very flaky scalp. Just nice to see a video that says "Hey it's all good. You can have pretty curly hair whether you do every step right or not." SoO Glad I found your channel. You are so pretty and I love your accent!!
I follow it BUT I still use a diffuser . I stopped using the hot setting. I use low heat with shots of cool for maybe 10 mins then I switch to cool. I cannot air dry I'm impatient and it looks like like doodoo when it's done lol
THANK YOU THANK YOU! I've been watching CG videos for a week now and was beginning to stress about starting the process and that it takes soooo much time. I'm a sleep in as long as I can person and don't want get up 2 hours before I have to leave so I can fix my hair. AND I've been dying my hair for 20+ years now and I LOVE MY BLONDE! I think the darker hair on me ages me, I am 49, I don't need to look older and the greys are starting to come in hard so I can't see giving up my blonde. I also like to change up my look with curly, straight, etc, and I have yet to see any videos where that is "allowed" on the CG method. I understand the CG method works great for many so great for you! but I need to find what works for ME and my lifestyle. Thank you so much for this video! I can relax now and go back to bed :)
I agree with you we have the choose and do what works for your curls. I do not follow a method but I use some of the tips. It s just sad to see some people very strict flowing it by the book. They did not even read the book!
I agreed with you on so many points here. I have had curly hair my whole life and have struggled with it for that long. I have tried every product out there, and very little works on my hair to get perfect curls. So I use what I can A) afford and B) come by easily. Also, like you I love to colour my hair, and change the styles and cuts. I like to have options. AND I’m Canadian, so during the winter it’s not the smartest idea to let my hair air dry when it’s -30 outside. During the summer it’s fine, I can do without my blow dryer, but I often diffuse it when I go natural curls in the winter. I appreciate that you advocate for doing what works for you. That’s how it should be. 👍🏼
Appreciate this point of view. I'm trying the CG method... AGAIN! I'm almost a month in. We'll see how it goes. Also, and I'm not being rude, but I LOVE that you aren't using the hairbrush "microphone". It's nice just to see you talk without it. :-)
Agree with it all! Love that you mentioned not liking the dry cuts. I don't straighten my hair, but started to see my hair getting out of control all over. Very happy that I went back to wet cuts. I love gel too. Glad I found your channel. 💜
I use a sulfate shampoo, because I have a scalp issue. Because of that I condition or mask 2x after shampooing, and it keeps my wavy/curly hair really hydrated. I also do not follow the CG method. Only maybe for styling, I follow the LOC/LCO method. It's awesome. I can't for the life of me use conditioner to wash, or even a sulfate-free shampoo, it tears my scalp up. I have seborrheic dermatitis and sometimes I need a medicated shampoo. I can keep the medicated shampoo at bay a bit by using harsh sulfates; and so that is what I do. I listen to my own hair and scalp, not a book. The CG book was eye-opening just for discovering my natural texture, though.
Marleen G. I had that as well. I was allergic to the conditioners I was using. I use berts bees and my scalp has cleared up almost totally. Just a bit left around my ears and on day three I feel it a bit around my hair line.
I have the same thing! my scalp just can’t handle sulphate free and not like a serious medical schampoo. apart from that I try to keep my curls as happy as possible with partly CG routines.
Thank goodness for some sanity here! My issue was the exact same! I live in Canada and I have thick long 2b curly hair so when it’s fall, winter and beginning of spring it takes me 4-5 hours to air dry properly before I can leave the house. Despite cranking up the heat to 25 in the house it’s still not sustainable! Diffusing still causes frizz but on cool air it’s just unpleasant.
I began my curly hair journey or shall I say I began to embrace my fine, naturally wavy and curly hair five years ago. Perhaps it was just my way of being a rebel after being told that I would only be taken seriously in my profession with serious hair, hence I spent years being miserable with my daily hair routine to achieve what I thought would help me be perceived as serious and professional. Anyway, when I began the journey, I did do a lot of research and I did seriously take on the CG method after reading the CG book. I had good and bad curl days and began to discover what products and techniques worked and didn’t work. You are spot on about different climates; I live with four distinct seasons where the winter is harsh and the summers are short and humid, so I adapted. Moreover, I color my hair and I most certainly will not be embracing grey hair any time soon. Long story, short...I have a routine and various products from gels, pomades, conditioners, oils, etc. that has evolved based upon what works for me to include some heat from diffusing and using a curling wand from time to time to smooth and define my second and third day hair. I should add that at the age of 55 I get more compliments on my hair than I ever imagined possible and actually never have felt better about myself than I do today.
I either kept my hair super short to keep out the curl or grew it long and dried it straight for the past 10 years because someone said "curly hair doesn't look professional" . I only started embracing being curly again a few months ago because I was fed up with how dry and damaged my hair was from heat drying and Keratin treatments. I still haven't figured out a routine yet that works for my combination curly course crown and medium wavy everywhere else but that's better than continuing to damage my hair but I will persevere!
I REALLY enjoyed this. Especially when you said that you didn't start out with curly hair and that you miss your old hair. I totally get you. I'm at the very beginning stages of learning to work with my very wavy hair but more so learning to accept it. I've always thought that curly hair was beautiful (everyone in my family has curly hair except me and my sister) but my hair was stick straight and absolutely NOTHING could get it to curl. Now, my hair is so different, I have to learn how to take care of it. Very, very different and a lot more work lol.
My routine is pretty basic and inexpensive: Garnier shampoo and conditioner every 2-3 days. No heat (which means in the winter I may go as far as every 4 days so I'm not running around with icicles in my hair). Every so often I'll do a coconut oil mask. And roughly every six weeks I dye my hair. That's about it. I've never tried the curly girl method because it just always seemed overwhelming to me.
Thank you so much for this video! I just discovered the CG method about a month ago and have been loving learning how to make my curls pop and be more defined, but I'm also a bit concerned by how limited I've felt; my hair takes 5.5 hours to air dry which isn't going to happen every wash day, testing new products only to find that one makes my hair feel dirty and waxy, having to wash and dry all over again, sometimes just not liking the unpredictability of my curls and wanting smooth, straighter hair, to name a few reasons. I get my hair coloured and have no interest in stopping. I had a hair colour appointment a few days ago and although my hair stylist uses the Kevin Murphy line which is apparently sulphate free, the styling products all have silicones in them so I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with the idea of having to do another 'final wash' and basically starting the method over from square one. I also got her to style my hair the way she usually does (similar to my profile picture), in kind of beachy tendrils- not at all my natural curls, and I LOVE when my hair looks like that too. I had also just bought a brand new CHI flat iron before discovering the method and really didn't want to part with it! I want to be able to straighten my hair sometimes, but I really want to make sure to use a heat protectant. From what I'm seeing, heat protectants/straightening balms all seem to have silicones in them, which would mean I would have to do a 'final wash' with a sulphate shampoo after each time I straighten my hair. 1. Are sulphates *really* the only way to remove silicones from hair? Or would a good clarifying shampoo or something like DevaCurls's BuildupBuster, or Low-poo original be enough to remove silicones? 2. Are there any good quality heat protectants that are silicone free? I'm desperate to still be able to straighten my hair from time to time. I love the look of it so much and if I'm going out for a big event, I like the predictability of knowing my hair will behave when it's a straighter style. And thanks for the recommendation of reading the book! I'll be checking it out from my library today. ps I LOVE your lip shade!! What is it? Gorgeous!
thanks Daphne! Those clarifying shampoos will remove enough of the styling products for you to worry about. It's not a big issue. And there are some good silicone free heat protectants - check out this list - www.hairromance.com/2016/01/silicone-free-heat-protectants.html. And I think I'm wearing a Bourjois lip velvet in Frambourjoise xx
I had stick straight hair until I developed severe thyroid disease 2 years ago. My hair is wavy-straight-curly aka totally multi textured. I’ve been trying the CGM for 5 months, but haven’t noticed a difference whatsoever. Halp!
I feel you with the thyroid problems, I have Hashimotos and have had periods of hair loss (among other issues). I feel lucky that I have thick hair and it hasn't been really noticeable, though I can tell. When your hair routine isn't working, I say to take it right back to basics and see what your hair does with no product. Then test out different products to see how that helps. It takes time but use the products you have and you'll have a new routine before you know it xx
Hair Romance I also have Hashimotos and my hair is thin, oily and has a bit of a wave. If I put any product in my hair, it just weighs it down and makes it look stringy. It’s easier just to wear it straight because doing the cg method just makes it look like I don’t wash my hair. (I had beautiful curls before I had a hysterectomy)
I have wavy hair and strictly following the CGM doesn't work for me. I mostly use sulfate-free shampoos (I don't co-wash) but I use a clarifying shampoo once a month or so to get rid of build-up. I avoid heavy silicones and drying alcohols, though. I really appreciate you making this video and think we need more of this attitude. There is no need to argue with strangers online about what THEY choose to do with THEIR hair. There is also no need to shame people for heat styling or bleaching or any other choice they make about their hair. In general, the approach to haircare that involves inviolable rules is never going to be a winning proposition. I think some people took the info in Lorraine Massey's and decided that you MUST do everything exactly as she says to have "good" curly hair. The truth is that everyone has to work out what works best for themselves.
I relate to this a lot - I'm 22 and I mostly follow CG after heat-styling my hair for years, and it has improved my curl pattern and my hair is far less damaged. But every once in a while I want to straighten or blow out and curl my hair and not feel guilty about it! (I have fine, very dense, frizz-prone 2B hair.) While frequent heat-styling/use of certain products can get rid of some of the benefits of the CG method, everyone's hair is different and it's important to be flexible. Like you said, it should make your life easier and be fun!
Also - if anyone else has a similar hair type and has issues with volume near the roots/curls lasting through day 2/3 I would love any tips or product recommendations!
I love that you mentioned the 7 year cycle! That's when mine happened and one my stylists told me about it. I had mostly straight hair until I turned 21 and then BAM - curls. I had one wave in high school, in the front and it was a slightly lighter brown and it happened after I'd had it dyed blonde (naturally black/brown). It was so weird. My curls have gotten curlier as I've gotten older. I do plan on doing a modified CG routine in that I'm going to avoid the basic things you're supposed to avoid and I've typically washed it in cold water because I color my hair (and that's not changing anytime soon) and I want the red to last. I rarely use heat to style my hair, but I agree with you that I love to have fun with my hair. So, I'm going to do a hybrid as well with cutting out the silicon and sulfates and those things. Really appreciate this video. Thanks!
Exactly. I wouldn't follow the same skin care method as a person with acne or oily skin! My skin is clear and loves oil, aaalll the oil it can get. But some peoples skin will break out if they put oil on it. So why is hair any different??
This is the first video of yours I've watched and I've already subscribed. =) I do a hybrid routine as well. No sulfates or silicones for me, but I do wash my hair with a non-sulfate shampoo every so often, just whenever it starts to feel like it needs it. I also prefer to diffuse my hair, I live in Ohio going out in winter with wet hair is horrible but mine takes all day to really air dry. I love dying my hair too, I've spent most of my adult life as some form of a redhead lol. It's nice to finally find someone who is not fully CG making content!
Love this video! Glad to know other curly girls are out there and not using the CG method! I live where it's really humid and going silicone free and not using hair spray will not work for me! I also like your thoughts about hair color! Your blonde color looks great! Can you share your hair routine and favorite products?
Thank you for this video. I've been hanging out for it and finally got to watch it 😊 I have been CGM for 6 months and trying to convince myself i really love my hair. I have seen results for sure but i feel too guilty to use my curling wand even though i love the look of it and really do find it it easier than complicated CG routines! I think the thing i miss the most are hair oils and wax! I used to use a combo of those 2 mixed toether to define my waves and add a bit of gritty texture plus smooth halo frizz and i loved it. My best thing ive learnt from CGM is how to condition my hair and apply products properly. Roping, squish to condish and scrunch and pump are really game changers for the condition and shape of my curl. I will continue with these for sure. The other night i had pretty good waves but was missing the very 'done' look of a curling wand so added a few touches of wand curls and felt much happier with the end result. Your video has made me let go of a bit of the guilt and made me realise i can do it my way! Thanks again!
Loved your video... I'm tired of cg. Especially wen products cost a bomb cos here local products are few and most are imported esp creams, gels, leave in. I jus needed to hear dis... Thanks fr making dis video
I have always had trouble with my hair. Drugstore shampoo usually makes it worse and a lot of the really expensive shampoos make it too limp. I’m trying Deva Curl soon and want to try to figure out my own hair routine. I’ve figured out my skin now it’s my hair’s turn lol. Thank you for your honesty and advice in this video. I’m hoping to find the path that works for me too.
Great video! I don´t follow the exact method, i use shampoo every day and change my conditioner with or without silicones.... the important thing for me is that... the product works for my hair without a lot of work. My hair is an accesorie... but not my entire life. Love the variety of opinion of your video, cool!
Thank you for this new perspective! This is such an interesting and informative video! Thank you for your opinion! I just started doing the CGM. So far it is going pretty well but I’m in disagreement about the “no heat” rule. There are times that I need to dry my hair more rapidly because it takes my hair soo long to air dry. Also, its very cold where I live so I sometimes need to dry it with heat so that I don’t go to bed with wet hair! Anyway, I am still figuring out the CGM so that it works for me. If I can’t figure it out, I’ll probably follow your advice about saving myself the frustration. Thanks again for the awesome video.
Amazing & informative video, Christina! This is my first video from you which was recommended for me by TH-cam. We as natural hair women have to do what works for us as individuals. I didn’t know that Lorraine Massey has nothing to do with Devachan and DevaCurl anymore. I own Lorraine’s Curly Girl Handbook too, and have read it through twice or more. Some things in the book work for me while others don’t. I do use CG friendly products, but cleansing my hair & scalp with conditioner doesn’t work very well for me. I use CG shampoo, and I use heat on my hair as far as hooded dryers and diffusers since it gets cold where I live. I love to straighten my curly hair sometimes for a change, but don’t do to often, since I’ve suffered from heat damage once before. I love my frizz since it gives volume to my flat 3c medium density hair. I shampoo, deep condition, dry my hair with one of my t-shirts, style, and go under a hair dryer or diffuse once a week.
I’ve been at the CGM for almost a year now, and I keep waiting for ringlets to form. I dreeeam of ringlets and I’ve always wanted them, but my hair is always loose! I am glad to hear about embracing my own individual curl type and not worrying about being perfect to the method. I agree! Have fun with your hair! I love changing it so much, it’s been hard to stay so steady!
Your hair won't form ringlets if you've not got that type of hair. My hair is naturally wavy so the CG method will help to enhance that natural texture of my hair. I won't get ringlets either thats not what the CG method does.
Becksnnc I know you’re right 😉 I just kept on hoping. But! I am starting to love that I have loose hair that I can be more free with! CG does make daily styling easier because my hair is manageable and moisturized.
Yeah I’m tired of having curly hair issues! There’s much more important things going on in my life, too 🤪. I’ve been doing the CG method for about the past 3 years. Have to say that my hair looked better when I was getting normal wet haircuts vs the Devacurl dry cut. My layers are messed up and I’ve had it👎🏻😪. I’m starting to look like I have an 80s mullet or bilevel! I’m done. Going to a new salon in a couple of weeks and will have a wet haircut 💇🏻♀️. I’m going to get my layers fixed soon. The salon uses products that are sulfate free, but not silicone free. Maybe my hair looked better when I was using silicone products 🤔. Too many rules for the curly girl method. People are too judgmental. Maybe I got sucked into the theory that silicone products are bad. Not sure. Not giving up having my hair colored. I’m over 40 and don’t want my gray roots to show. Also using a hair dryer with my diffuser is absolutely necessary, as I live in the northeast 🇺🇸. Love your honesty. There’s nothing wrong with doing what’s right for you and everything isn’t just “black or white “. We don’t have to follow absolutes blindly.
Christina! Thank you so much! I have been struggling for close to 2 years... Still thinking that maybe I just haven't figured out the right combo or method. Sure I've had good days/weeks, but it's overall not working for my hair. I've tried just about every line out there, and spent plenty of money. You're right, there are plenty of struggles in life... Hair shouldn't be one of them. I appreciate this video so much. Kudos to you for your honesty. 😊
thanks Annie! like a few people have commented, an occasional shampoo can help reset your hair and might help you too. Then you can go back to your regular routine xx
I tried it but it didn't work well for me. My hair is fine but curly. The method seemed to weigh my fine hair down easily and quickly. I like what volume I get with regular products. I like my hair fluffy and voluminous ( even a little frizzy ) and don't even like styling products designed for curly hair. I wear my hair wavy/curly half the time and straight half the time. I like both looks. I think you should do what works for you. Yes- my hair was straight for years! Until menopause and ERT then it turned wavy and curly. so I was at a loss for quite a while. I still like it when I straighten my hair also.... and wear it curly when I feel like it.
Really enjoyed your video. From reading comments here and elsewhere, I am coming to the conclusion that I will probably have to follow a modified version of cg method. I have fine, high porosity hair, that needs a good wash every second day. Not washing is not an option for me. So straight up I'm not doing the cg 100%. I think there is a lot of good information on all the forums and videos I've looked at so I will go slowly and follow the routine that works for me. I think your attitude is so refreshing. I don't need to feel guilty about dying my hair or blow drying it every now and then. Keep up your honest and kind outlook.
Thank you for this video it is always good when someone voices their different opinion. I have short curly hair and am short hairstyle advice homeless to be honest. The conditioner only does not work at all on me both because of length and hair type. It makes my hair look greasy yak. These are 2 aspects not really catered for in the curly hair method. BUT I started cutting my hair and using gel and crunching thanks to the book and this work wonders on me. I think it is like everything, there are guidelines out there and each of us needs to experiment. No 1 rule feets all
You’re quite right. I’m in tassie and winter is a pain in the ar$e to air dry especially cus my hair is pretty long. Just yesterday I saw another influencer use a diffuser for about 15 minutes then air dry remainder. So totally agree when you say one has to find what suits their own hair, lifestyle, fun factor, etc. Loved your video!
thank you! I'm visiting a friend in Canada at the moment and I have no idea how people could go out with wet hair here - even in spring it's freezing! xx
One thing I was clear about tcgm was that it would take a long time because of the damage, I don't follow everything but the method did help me get my curls back :) I guess it is not for everyone--
I enjoy your message. I took a step back from all the info and decided I'll start with the less is more approach. I don't silicones or sulfates, I use a light oil and a definitely cream and I don't go crazy on scrunching. I have a very obvious wave and I don't really want to manipulate it into a curl, so this works for me just fine. I'm all about simplicity.
Thank you for your honest but tactful comment about the author of the CG book. It was refreshing to hear. I am 45 yrs old and just starting to except my curls. For yrs I have been straightening my hair. I have only been doing this for 2 days..lol a fair way to go yet....
The “Curly Girl” I have read is not against coloring hair. There is a chapter, which gives some directions about it. Lorraine Massey, the writer herself, has her hair dyed. A book I could recommend is “Live Curly, Live Free”. I really love it!
Hair Romance It’s a cheap e-book. It changed the way I deal with my hair. It has good explanations about hair structure and the ingredients used in the products.
I discovered gels/lotions work better on my hair then creams. I don’t use a blow dryer because it causes my hair to be frizzy. The more touch my hair the frizzy it gets so I squish my hair and then I don’t touch it. Air drying really works for me. I too love coloring my hair and I probably will never give that up.
I definitely don't follow the CG method. I tried, but it didn't work for my hair and my scalp. My scalp is incredibly sensitive and gets super itchy so I have to use a sulfate shampoo for my scalp at least every other day. Co-washing my hair is out. I did that for awhile but my scalp was on fire. I do use CG and non CG friendly conditioners and styling products. I do use some of the techniques to apply products because they worked out for me. I love getting highlights in my hair though so I'm never going to stop that. You just have to find out what works for you.
It's weird how you can have a sensitive scalp that doesn't mind sulphates. I've really struggled with sulphate free shampoo, I had to throw a bottle out because it made my scalp soooo flaky and horrible. Sulphate free isn't always the best.
sheepseaexplorer FINALLY someone who talks about the problematic scalp situation! I have an extremely sensitive scalp and eczema so unfortunately I have to use a schampoo with sulphates for my scalp not to actually kill me. that leaves me with quite a lot of frizz and I cringe every time I see all theses curly people leaving like a ton of conditioner in their hair as a part of their routine. my scalp would cry flaky greasy tears if I did that. so I’m still trying to find a way to compromise; not killing my curly hair but still keeping my scalp happy.
I suffer from eczema as well but I know I need to avoid sulfates at all costs, otherwise it irritates it worse. I find it weird that people with eczema do fine with sulfates
I’ve been reluctant to give up shampoo partly for this reason and partly because the sulphate etc free products are more expensive and I can’t afford that right now. I’ve improved my hair by washing it less frequently. I’ve gone from every 2 days to every 5 and used dry shampoo when things got irritated. The transition is uncomfortable but it’s much better now than it was before. I have better skin on my scalp and I lose less hair when washing. I always use a mask though, never ordinary conditioner.
I just happened to stumble upon this video and I'm really glad you did. I recently did a little chat on my IG stories about a similar perspective, so I guess my only critique would be that a more accurate title would be "Why I don't follow the curly method to the letter." Given that you have embraced some of the guidelines that DO wok for you.. That is the case for me. I color my hair, have a scalp that is sensitive to sweat, take medication and sweat a lot for work during the week, so I REFUSE to go around with a smelly irritated scalp, when I know I'm someone who HAS to shampoo. My hair is also extremely fine, thin and low density, which is a community that is underrepresented on Instagram, so I started my own series geared towards that hair type as well as a page that will launch later this summer to feature curlies with hair like mine. I have seen first hand the amount of shaming and bullying that goes on in the IG curly community, masked as " and it is masked as concern". I stand my ground and stand tall with my own choices, empowering others who follow me to do the same. Now I have a video I can refer them to, so thank you.
thanks for commenting! Have you started your IG yet? I'd love to follow you as I so agree that it's all about big hair on instagram (big everything though, right?!) and I'd love to see more fine curly hairstyles xx
Hair Romance Hi there, thanks much and I would love to have you stop by my page (which I run with my sister). Over time, you will see how many of the points that you made here I agree with and have spoken about both in this video, I have also expressed in my posts and stories and highlight reels. I run two discussion series dedicated to fine and thin haires curlies so we can try to make a difference and change the fact that we are unfairly under-represented on the gram especially by brands . The handle is: @CurlyCurvyPassion And I am the one whose photos are most often on there. ;) ( I'm J) See you there 😊👌
I follow the curly girl method product wise (no sulfates or silicones) but I do still color my hair and wash it every day or every other day. My scalp hates it when I don't, but dropping sulfates and silicones was a huge game changer for me. My waves sprung up from it.
Thank you so much for being so open about all that curly hair stuff. As you know very well it works different for everyone. All curls are different and you can spend a fortune of all kind of products and still do not get the right results. Very frustrating, I tried some of those products but did not get the results I hoped for. Much appreciated your opinion ❤️ thanks again.
I'm less than a month in on CG but my beyond damaged curls are already much happier. I am part of an uber-supportive, yet strict, CG group on FB which has been invaluable for my curl journey. It's funny that you mention the cost to go CG. I've found that some of the most loyal Curly Girls (who also have the most gorgeous curls) use the bottom shelf cheap drugstore stuff that has CG approved ingredients. I think CG is tons of trial and error and really becoming one with your curls. Learning everything about it from it's curl type, porosity and protein levels and how it reacts to specific ingredients. For example, I recently learned my curls hate coconut! But yea, it's a lot of work and demands patience which is not for everyone! I admittedly haven't read the book yet (on the library wait list), but from my understanding, the 'No Silicone' rule pertains to non-soluble silicones as the reason for avoiding them is they can't be rinsed off of your hair with water, but instead a harsh sulfate is needed to get rid of the build up. I'm pretty sure soulbe silicones are CG safe! Putting aside the effects of non-soluble silicones on hair, I think avoiding non-soluble silicones is being environmentally conscious. That silicone filled product goes down the drain but can't break down. Avoiding non-soluble silicones is like the composting version for hair of doing our part for planet earth! Regardless, I love your message. Do what makes YOU happy! :)
Kat, I'd love a follow-up on how your curly journey is going. I'm about a month in and only in the last week am even starting to feel like I'm not completely lost. You mentioned in another comment how low pourosity hair takes forever to dry and has a hard time with product because it sits in the hair and doesn't soak in...that's me! Everyone is recommending deep conditioning and high protein and moisturizing product, all of which make my hair heavy and zap the curl right out. Would love to hear recommendations! Nobody talks about us 2a-2b wavies with low pourosity hair. I feel like I'm on an island.
I intensely agree with you. It does NOT have to be expensive and in my opinion it does not have to be hard either. I actually find it a lot easier now then when I had chemically relaxed hair and used al kinds of harsh products on my hair. I used to buy the entire drugstore because nothing ever worked for me. But I did not have the knowledge that I have now (thanks to the CG-Method and - like you - being a part of a very active and supportive Facebook group). Now I literally have a few products and that’s it. I don’t have to go and try out the complete inventory of drugstores anymore, because I now know what to look for according to my hair’s needs. My curls have not looked better since I started with the CG-Method. 😁🤩
Great advice, especially to read the CG book and to experiment within reason. The information about hormones and curly hair is really helpful. My hair care routine evolved from the book, and a terrific stylist with a sensible approach and years of experience. Her opinions echo yours, especially about having fun and doing what works best for my curls and lifestyle. My daughter is approaching puberty and I’d like encourage her to have fun too. Thanks.
I have rebel hair. One day about 3 weeks ago I was fed up with how hard to manage it was, and told a stylist to just chop it off. I took off about 30 centimeters in length, and started a journey in short curly frizzy hair (it's not as bad as it sounds). I have gotten more compliments than ever, and I'm hoping my hair will grow out better, less dry and fragile. I think a CG would die if she saw the cut LOL but you have to do what's best for you. My hair was too damaged, it just had to go. And I feel much better now. So it's just a matter of personal preference.
I went from almost waist length to a collarbone length cut, and around the same time switched to sulfate free shampoo/conditioner. My curls are so much healthier, and now I'm almost back to the same length but with WAY healthier hair.
Rachel Walker I would love to get my hands on Shea Moisture products but they don't sell them where I live and it's kind of complicated to buy online here. But I'm trying to follow natural recipes and condition with good quality products so my hair won't suffer as it grows. Thanks for the tip, though!
Also I forgot to mention I have naturally black hair with a ton of white. I tried embracing the white and after a few years gave it up and I dye it to a similar color as my natural color. So I agree with what you said about it being too limiting to not color your hair.
I had never even heard about the CG method! But a lot of it sounds familiar. What I used to do: wash my hair 2-3 times a week, brush it while blowdrying. I didn't know my hair was curly at the time because I gave it no chance to curl with all the drying and brushing. I figured it out when I actually bought a straightening product and let my hair air dry for a bit. The struggle since then has always been to find a product that isn't too heavy and sticky or bad for my hair but still allows me to blow dry my hair. Mousse made it look great but was so so drying. As was all the heat. I also grew allergic to shampoo. After researching curls a bit more over the last years I've develpoed a method that works well for me and that I've been using for maybe 3 years now: Wash my hair every day - my scalp itches quickly and weats like mad if I don't wash it at least every other day. I can't wear my hair open with second day curls because. So warm. Also, frizz. I double condition, preferably with one conditioner being frizz treating. I only shampoo once or twice a month at the moment. Or when clearly needed. I finger comb my hair in the shower and every other week I comb it properly while conditioning it. I use a microfiber towel to dry it which mainly means I wrap it around my head when I get out of the shower. No rubbing, just pressing. To style I generally use a light leave in conditioner to treat and give a bit of definition. At the moment I put a curl treatment into the tips but I have to be mindful of how much I use. Every other week I put some oil or a mask in over night. I never use coconut oil. My hair hates it. I tend not to geat style. My morning routine is quite long and gives my hair time to air dry a bit. I also tend to have long commutes so it can dry (almost) fully while I'm on the bus/train. In the winter I wear really wide hats I can fit my hair into while I walk to the station. On public transit I just take them off and let the heating do the rest. Sometimes I blow dry my hair if I really need to or want extra volume but generally I can get away without it by now. I definitely color my hair and love it. I straighten it sometimes but, girl, that takes about 45 minutes and may only look good for 30 depending on the weather and my hair's mood.
I really appreciate this video. I recently started to dip my toes into embracing my semi wavy / curly hair and it is all very overwhelming. it is so nice to watch a video where I don't feel like I'm doing everything wrong LOL
thanks so much, Alison! The CG videos can be really confusing at the start so just keep it simple and focus on conditioning and your hair will love you for it x
I actually found, after doing the Curly Girl method for a while, that my hair responded much better to shampooing (and yes there are sulfates 😱in my shampoo😂) and then conditioning very well. It just worked so incredibly well for me. I felt really guilty at first because of using the shampoo, but my curls were so hydrated, soft, and just really healthy that I’m going to continue. Thank you so very much for your enlightening videos, I feel better about my choice!
Thank you so much for this video! I’ve been so frustrated with the CG method. I always wash my hair with a sulfate free shampoo because regular shampoos were causing my scalp to flake. I gave up on my AG hair food leave in which left my hair beautiful but had silicone. That plus my air dry it mousse which has sulfate and silicone. This also left my hair looking amazing. I started buying all these curly girl products and my hair looks worse than ever. I’ve decided to go back to my old method with an occasional deep conditioning and a sulfate shampoo here and there just to get rid of buildup. It worked just fine in this FL humidity
Thank you so much for your video. I recently started watching a lot of videos on curly hair and i have learned a lot about taking care of my natural curls and keeping my hair healhty. But you are soo right, we should embrace and enjoy our hair. a I watch so many natural hair videos prohibiting this or that 😧 its so hard and boring to keep up. I like to dye my hair too and that's something i don't want to give up. Thank you!
Your hair is gorgeous! 😍 Thank you for this video! I was on a curly girl website and they said I didn't belong because I have straighish hair on top and 2b waves on the bottom they didn't see my pattern on the underside. It was so rude. I find if I have a dry cut it works for me. I have to use sulfate free or my scalp itchs
My mom was telling me some of the hair cut things. She was a stylist(not many curly people), and she told me before I decided to get a dry cut, that I should remember its okay if your hair is uneven, and if you straighten your hair, its going to be very uneven. I don't fully follow th CG method either, just the simple facts about sufates and stuff. Thank you for this video!
So, here in Brazil we follow a different version of the CG method, it's called low/no poo. Silicones are permitted, waxes and alcohols too, since those can all be removed with a low poo shampoo. It was surprising for me to discover how restrictive the original CG method was. I do follow the more 'strict' technique and it was wonderful for my curls, but the whole point really is to make your hair healthier and your life easier, otherwise it's just not worth it
@@tazlina77 insoluble silicones can only be removed with sulfate shampoos, but soluble silicones can be removed with just water so they're allowed in low poo :) (idk about no poo 'cause I don't follow it)
I embraced the CG method for about 3 years then took all the good stuff I’d learned and tweaked it, like you, to suit me. Grateful to Lorraine for putting our curls in the forefront and happy to move on and experiment. I quit dying and embraced my silver several years ago before it was a thing and love it.
As a hair stylist (who personally has slight wavy hair) I can’t stand how people are so opinionated about their curls! Just educate yourself and try what works for you, no need to be aggressive with others. Great video!
yes! it's the aggressive commenters that really get to me too xx
Yes yes yes!
I struggle. I'm trying to find a middle of the road, healthy way to live with my hair.
thanks Cheryl! and keep going, you're probably closer than you think xx
The main curly girl rule I follow is no sulfates and silicones. I've seen a HUGE change in my curl pattern, definition, frizz, and shine since I've committed to it! Other then that, I don't really follow any of the other rules. I just prefer to use a sulfate free shampoo, and if I didn't diffuse my hair, it would literally take 12 hours to dry.
why does our hair take so long to dry?! Hooray for diffusers or I would be so cold xx
It's more porous so it holds more water. Mine take s 6 hrs to dry inside
It's true that every head of curls is unique.
thanks Karen, and I love that you've already designed a routine that's right for you xx
I have the same type of hair! What do you find works for you? I am at a total loss
Hugs!
Thank you for leaving such a lovely comment, Carol, and your hair looks gorgeous. I can see why you get lots of compliments :) xx
Carol, a book that help me a lot is “Live Curly, Live Free”. I have read “Curly Girl” and “Live Curly, Live Free”. It’s cheap, also!
I will order it. Thanks:D
Carol A I read e-book version, I bought it in amazon.com.
Love your curls!!
I am totally natural and love my hair. The time and mess and expense is over and very freeing.
thanks so much for sharing your routine, and love that you're embracing your natural glitter hair :) I might get there one day too :) xx
I wish you would do a video about how you cut your hair and the products you use.
Use them everyday and only wash my hair once every 8-10 days...love these 2 products...they work for me and are cheap!
they sound perfect! I love that leave in treatment but haven't tried that serum xx
Thank you I’m going to try these products. 👍🏼😊
If I try to help my hair be curly it becomes straight as fuck but hen if I leave it alone it is curly 😂
Also, thanks for your tip on the darshana hair oil, that stuff is awesome!
thanks so much , Mary! It sounds like you've got an awesome routine now, and it's about combining CG techniques with what works for you :) xx
What products do you use? My hair was also resllyyyyyyy greasy!!!
That's what bothers me most about living in Australia. It's like curly girls are totally forgotten about.
Here, here! I am struggling to find anything for the curly hair products, mentioned by different Utubers. There is not much available here, in Australia, and the prices are forbidding!
Amen! at the end of the day it's just hair and people can do what they want with it
yes! thanks Tash x
So I do follow it product wise, but I'm relaxed.
love your attitude and your routine! xx
Is there a second edition of the book? :o
Yes I think you can find it on amazon
after you use silicones, do you clarify with sulfate shampoo?
New sub 😊👍
thanks so much, Veronica xx
I love that you love your hair finally! And curls can be complicated, sounds like you've got it just right xx
Rock those curls!!!
(Then we shampoo/condition/style, so the client leaves looking great!) TL;DR: yay for curls, boo for too many rules.
thank you & I completely agree with you on cuts too! x
I don't think it's the methods fault though I think I just have a weird texture
If anybody else has this really weird texture like me I suggest clipped up styles to where the wavy part of your hair is pulled away to show those lovely curls ❤
Lisa Ross Thank for the tips I really appreciate it
idk if this will help drastically but sprinkling some collagen powder in like oatmeal every morning is really good for your hair and nails and that might help with the texture
kirsten couly Thanks you for the unique tip I appreciate it
I have the same type of hair (wavy on top, curly towards the bottom) & I style my hair the same way most days!
thanks Avril! It's a guide, and there are some great techniques but no one has time for airdrying like that
Thank you for your honest thoughts.
This is why you're my favorite curly youtuber :D you're so nice and honest and wise about what you share in your videos, I follow some things of the curly girl method, and it works for my curls, but some don't, and I hate the part where you cannot bleach or dye your hair, my natural hair it's black, but I bleach it and dye it ginger, orange, strawberry blond and all the tones that beautiful redheads have :) because I love that hair color, and everyone says it suits me and I love it too, I love to change my hair color and haircut, and I use a curly wand to define some of the curls of my hair, I saw you do this sometimes in some of your hair routines, so instead of "limiting" my self sticking 100% to the CGM and feeling bored with my hair, I made my own method, where I use the products that work for me and make what I want with my hair (dye it, bleach it or use heat) so I think everyone should try different methods and take the things that work for their curls and make their own method, even if it's not "right" for other people :)
Your gorgeous hair made me feel like I can have beautiful curly hair even when I use heat and dye my hair, so I thank you so much for this and all of your videos, you're amazing :)
thank you so much Mirem! Your red hair looks gorgeous in your pic xx
Hair Romance Thank you so much for reading my comment and answering :) you're hair it's gorgeous in any color :D
Mirem Itziar india batson follows the CG method, she's wavy and she bleaches her hair. so...
You can dye your hair and still do the curly girl method, the deva salon I go to almost every stylist there has their hair yied, I've had my hair dyed too they aren't against it..just have to acquire the knowledge care for your hair before and after the dye so the curls stay in tact 🙂
Beckscepeda I came to say the same thing. The book even says you can still get color.
Other times I love using products that have silicones, hair gels and curl creams, I love mixing it up ❤
Welcome! It's all about making your own custom routine - and then changing it up! xx
Mine was stick straight until after high school!
thank you so much! It's so weird how our curls can appear like that, hope you've found a styling routine you like now xx
I'm exactly the same
My hair loves silicones too. I get the best curls not using the CG hair method
thanks so much, Shannon, and I'm so happy that I've helped you to love your curls! xx
Hi, I'm Jennifer. I Love the CG, but I use shampoo, the occational silicone, and straighten my hair from time to time. Different strokes for different folks! Great video! Love your hair!
thanks Jennifer xx
Sorry this is so long!!
thanks for sharing Jenn! I think it's just as helpful to know what doesn't work as well as what does xx
I would love to get a standing dryer! x
I think the forums are helpful but they don't allow for any variations so all of us with a hybrid routine just leave after a while xx
It was stressful for me at the beginning finding products that followed the rules, but now I’m used to it lol.
there's so many ways to make it work and you know your curls best xx
The DevaCurl products are just too expensive. That's my biggest deterrent to trying it. I'm so glad I found your channel!
thanks for watching! I'll try and film some product reviews soon but I'm really trying to test them well before I share them x
I love that you've embraced your hair, and think of your grey and natural glitter xx
You are so pretty and I love your accent!!
thanks so much Nicole! My sister was a hairdresser too and I loved hanging out in the salon while I was growing up xx
I follow it BUT I still use a diffuser . I stopped using the hot setting. I use low heat with shots of cool for maybe 10 mins then I switch to cool. I cannot air dry I'm impatient and it looks like like doodoo when it's done lol
my hair takes forever to air dry! You're right that low heat is best xx
thanks Stacy and good luck with the routine. I recommend taking photos and keeping notes as it's hard to remember what you did and what works xx
Agree with it all! Love that you mentioned not liking the dry cuts. I don't straighten my hair, but started to see my hair getting out of control all over. Very happy that I went back to wet cuts. I love gel too. Glad I found your channel. 💜
thank you, I really appreciate it xx
Liza, I did go to a dermatologist, and I can totally recommend that! Before going, I was at a loss of what to do when it got really bad.
Marleen G. You are everywhere
JQuiet, I get around. ;) :p
I should add that at the age of 55 I get more compliments on my hair than I ever imagined possible and actually never have felt better about myself than I do today.
love your attitude! And I can't stand when people say curly hair isn't "professional" - it's so offensive. Curls show you can manage anything ;)
Very, very different and a lot more work lol.
thank you so much, and hope you find a way to love your new waves too xx
My routine is pretty basic and inexpensive: Garnier shampoo and conditioner every 2-3 days. No heat (which means in the winter I may go as far as every 4 days so I'm not running around with icicles in my hair). Every so often I'll do a coconut oil mask. And roughly every six weeks I dye my hair. That's about it. I've never tried the curly girl method because it just always seemed overwhelming to me.
love your routine, sounds super simple xx
Also - if anyone else has a similar hair type and has issues with volume near the roots/curls lasting through day 2/3 I would love any tips or product recommendations!
thanks Catherine! You get me, and we shouldn't feel any guilt about our hair at all xx
you could try clipping your roots up at night? Not very glam but it can help. Otherwise a bit of hair volume powder is my non-CG fix xx
catherinelikespink I
I love that you mentioned the 7 year cycle! Thanks!
I think the most important thing is, that we just have to find out what works best for our hair. Don't just follow one method 😉 everyone is different.
Thanks Ashley! I'm often changing products to test for my blog but will start working on a new video aout my faves xx
Thank you for this video. I've been hanging out for it and finally got to watch it 😊
I have been CGM for 6 months and trying to convince myself i really love my hair. Thanks again!
thanks Steph! There are definitely some awesome CG techniques but you don't need to feel guilty for finessing a style - go with what you like xx
Loved your video... I'm tired of cg. Especially wen products cost a bomb cos here local products are few and most are imported esp creams, gels, leave in.
I jus needed to hear dis... Thanks fr making dis video
thank you xx
I have always had trouble with my hair. Drugstore shampoo usually makes it worse and a lot of the really expensive shampoos make it too limp. I’m trying Deva Curl soon and want to try to figure out my own hair routine. I’ve figured out my skin now it’s my hair’s turn lol. Thank you for your honesty and advice in this video. I’m hoping to find the path that works for me too.
thanks for watching Christin, and have you tried Kevin Murphy's products? The Angel Wash is great and doesn't weigh your hair down at all x
Great video! I don´t follow the exact method, i use shampoo every day and change my conditioner with or without silicones.... the important thing for me is that... the product works for my hair without a lot of work. My hair is an accesorie... but not my entire life. Love the variety of opinion of your video, cool!
thanks Diana :) xx
I shampoo, deep condition, dry my hair with one of my t-shirts, style, and go under a hair dryer or diffuse once a week.
thanks so much Jazmin, and I would love to get a hooded dryer x
You're more than welcome. A hooded dryer is amazing. You will love it.

I love changing it so much, it’s been hard to stay so steady!
it's hard and some hair types show a massive change but sometimes our hair just does what it does xx
We don’t have to follow absolutes blindly.
thanks April! and good luck with your next cut. It sounds like you'll have a perfect hybrid method soon - and no guilt too xx
I’m about a year into it routine wise and 6 months in with the products and I had nicer curls with my non-CG products 😬
Hair Romance Yup, I do that...but it's not enough. As of today, I'm on the road to CG modified, tho. So far so good!
I still like it when I straighten my hair also.... and wear it curly when I feel like it.
it's all about variety! sounds like you have a great routine that works for you xx
No 1 rule feets all
I think it should be like a buffet where you pick and choose what works for you xx
I thought it was only me . I had exact the same hair since its short I can't really put a lot of condioner coz it looks weight down amd auper greasy
Loved your video!
thank you! I'm visiting a friend in Canada at the moment and I have no idea how people could go out with wet hair here - even in spring it's freezing! xx
One thing I was clear about tcgm was that it would take a long time because of the damage, I don't follow everything but the method did help me get my curls back :) I guess it is not for everyone--
glad you got your curls back! :) xx
I'm all about simplicity.
haha the Curl police! That's exactly what they're like. Thanks Jill xx
I need to read that! x
Hair Romance
It’s a cheap e-book.
You just have to find out what works for you.
thank you! and keep doing you xx

@CurlyCurvyPassion
And I am the one whose photos are most often on there. ;) ( I'm J)
See you there 😊👌
I follow the curly girl method product wise (no sulfates or silicones) but I do still color my hair and wash it every day or every other day.
thank you! and love that you're in a supportive curly group too ! x
Thanks.
Thanks Sharon Rose! And I love that you're helping your daughter to embrace her curls too. Puberty was such a hard time for me #awkward
Brynne C exactly! It's hard for me to find sulfate free shampoo but I'm trying to give my hair the best possible care so it can grow strong.
Sara Altuna I use the shea moisture sulfate free sampoo hope this helps ❤
sometimes a cut is just what you need! I've done it and it feels so much better. Good luck with your new hair xx
After researching curls a bit more over the last years I've develpoed a method that works well for me and that I've been using for maybe 3 years now:
Wash my hair every day - my scalp itches quickly and weats like mad if I don't wash it at least every other day.
I straighten it sometimes but, girl, that takes about 45 minutes and may only look good for 30 depending on the weather and my hair's mood.
thank you so much for sharing your routine! I love seeing what you do and how it fits your commute - it's great xx
Thank you so very much for your enlightening videos, I feel better about my choice!
thanks Gabrielle! Shampoo isn't a dirty word here, and if you're happy with your curls, go with it xx
You are awesome and you know exactly who you are and what you want. Thank you for this wonderfully inspiring video.
Thank you!
thank so much for commenting! It's good to learn and I really wanted to share that's it's ok to modify your routine too x
Your hair is gorgeous! 😍 Thank you for this video! I was on a curly girl website and they said I didn't belong because I have straighish hair on top and 2b waves on the bottom they didn't see my pattern on the underside. It was so rude. I find if I have a dry cut it works for me. I have to use sulfate free or my scalp itchs
thanks Amanda! And sorry how you were treated by other curlies, it shouldn't be like that x
Thank you for this video!
thanks Jayden! x
So, here in Brazil we follow a different version of the CG method, it's called low/no poo. Silicones are permitted, waxes and alcohols too, since those can all be removed with a low poo shampoo. It was surprising for me to discover how restrictive the original CG method was. I do follow the more 'strict' technique and it was wonderful for my curls, but the whole point really is to make your hair healthier and your life easier, otherwise it's just not worth it
love your attitude! this sounds like a routine I could work with x
Yes exactly! I found that following it so strictly made life more difficult
But I thought that silicones can be only removed with sulfate shampoos...so how low poo can remove it?
@@tazlina77 insoluble silicones can only be removed with sulfate shampoos, but soluble silicones can be removed with just water so they're allowed in low poo :) (idk about no poo 'cause I don't follow it)
I embraced the CG method for about 3 years then took all the good stuff I’d learned and tweaked it, like you, to suit me. Grateful to Lorraine for putting our curls in the forefront and happy to move on and experiment. I quit dying and embraced my silver several years ago before it was a thing and love it.
ahead of the trend! Love how silver hair is making inroads (though I'm going to stay blonde / pink for now...) xx
