    I am in my 40s. I have been writing fan fic off and on since the 90s. Your videos are resources that I wish we had "way back then." Keep up the great work! Your advice is some of the best that I have seen or heard out there.

    i don’t write fan fiction (well i guess i sort of do, i write about my warrior cats oc’s. but i don’t think of it in a fan fic way) but i’ve been using your videos as background noise, and it’s actually making me want to start writing them

    Thank you for your advice. You speak like a true expert.
    The last time I was here, I revised the first 40 chapters of my fic. I began to tease my story a year before posting on three social platforms to tease people for tbe story. Posted either Screenshots from the show and drew fanart. I wrote different summaries - also for every chapter - and stayed active in the fandom.
    Also there are 4 themes to my story, that are popular in the fandom. I put them in, because I like them too - not because they are popular - but they should help.
    Problem is just, I'm not exactly a magnetic person. I mean, people thank me for feedback, like my posts but that's it. I don’t think, I could hype anybody. Now the first 11 chapies are on AO3 since 3 days - since this is like my fics pilot episode and think about posting 4 chapters every month now and focussing on producing more fanart illustrations for the best scenes in the story - and developing the longfic further.40 chapters are just season one.

    This video also proved extremely helpful to me! I'm planning of writing out my entire Earthbound fic and its sequel before posting it. Also, for the comments thing, I'm extremely sensitive to criticism and the like, so I don't want to enable comments.

    • @CoraMaria
      @CoraMaria  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Glad this was helpful! Planners unite!
      Regarding comments, it's up to you if you wanna disable them. Usually I say it's good to be open to constructive criticism at least in the vein that we might write something that's harmful to a marginalised group without realising it, so we should offer that space for those people to speak up about it and hold us accountable. Even if we don't change our work based on their feedback, their criticism is at least there for anyone else who reads our work. I know it's not fun to get it (I'm more sensitive to it than I want to be), but I do think fandom as a whole is maintaining some not-so-great status quos with its "never ever give unsoliticed concrit" rule.
      Please know I don't say this to shame you or invalidate your feelings, though. I just offer this as something to consider. It really is up to you.

    • @CoraMaria
      @CoraMaria  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@OneOfFourLucasMains Yeah that's fair. I wouldn't call comments like that "criticism" because it does nothing to tell a writer where they can improve.

    your channel is exactly what i needed!! im sure you've gotten a lot of comments like this already, however i am so thankful your channel is focused on the niches that come with fanfiction (As opposed to normal book writing)! the tips are GOLDDUST and youre so entertaining to watch!! the tip about summaries is honestly a life saver, and i went from a summary *actually* summarizing my fic (ive written lots of one shots in the past, but this is my first time writing a long fic so i was really unsure what i should do lol!) that i felt...uneasy about since it didn't really capture my attention. As soon as i used your tip a long winded summary was wittled down to: "Duke Wriothesley was supposed to kidnap a war criminal to prevent a worldwide war from erupting between Teyvat’s 7 great kingdoms…however he accidentally kidnaps the wrong person and now has the crown prince of his enemy sitting in his royal hall. Or: Wriothesley grabs the absolute WRONG person and has to deal/suffer with the consequences." i think it flows way better and it really captures my attention, and it was all thanks to your tips! i can't thank you enough! ^^

    All these were great points, great video!
    I always find myself putting down my work when it doesn't get the interaction I wanted it to, and judging the quality of my work via kudos. Listening to your video helps remind me that kudos don't always reflect quality, and that we should all feel proud of the works we've poured so much time and love in to, no matter how much interaction it gets. I still remember how terrified I was when I posted my first ever chapter last year, and now I can post so much more confidently, and that is my proudest achievement in fan fiction writing!
    Though I'm a little scared to branch out into social media and try to promote my work (especially because my fandom operates mostly on Twitter and that place is terrifying, I've only just got comfortable with Instagram!), listening to your video makes me want to give it a go. Not for validation of my work, but just to share my passion with others and talk to some cool people. It's hard to talk to people in the fandom just through once in a while ao3 comments!😅
    Thanks for sharing your video!☺

    Hey, I have a question:
    What do you think about Script Fics, Or fan fiction that’s written like:
    A: *smug* Well, well, well… looks like we meet again.

    • @CoraMaria
      @CoraMaria  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I think it's great for short little things on social media (especially Tumblr), or fan creations that require a script as part of the process (such as animations or audio dramas), but if I saw something like that on AO3, I'd probably click off. To me, long scripts are like long outlines: on their own, the story is an incomplete experience. It won't be complete unless the script is adapted to some kind of visual or audio medium, or the outline is adapted to prose. Prose is more immersive than the script format, because you're actually in the characters' heads, experiencing everything as they do (with some exceptions for omniscient narrator). Scripts only look at characters from the outside, unless there's a constant voice over of what the characters are thinking, which would be more of an interruption rather than a natural integration.
      That's not to say there's no fun or value in things posted in script format, or that there aren't people who will enjoy it, but if you post it on a fanfiction archive where people expect to see prose, don't be too surprised if the script format turns them away. If you're posting on AO3, it might be good to tag it with something like "Script" or "Written like a script" or "Script format" so people can know what to expect going in and thus receive the script format more openly. If you do want to write a story that is gripping and immersive in written form though, then prose is the way to go.
      I hope this isn't discouraging, but that's my opinion. If you do want to give prose a go but find writing your first draft that way kills your momentum, scripting can actually be a great way to write a zero draft (basically a draft that's somewhere between outline and first draft). If you can get the story, actions, and dialogue down in script form, then you can edit it into prose with full description and monologue later.
      Hope this helps!

    • @tjcartoons34526
      @tjcartoons34526 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Thanks! Even though really love this writing style, I still do prose, so don’t worry. I’m not discouraged; I actually write flash fiction (or drabbles as they are called).
