I'm not kidding I've bounced from "I've been staring at this google doc waiting to write literally anything." to "I got it!" Then pumping out a full script fic (I write these specfic fanfics as tv scripts, it's a fun time tbh)... but then I have to edit it which is a whole other struggle because why do I keep forgetting words when I'm writing?!

I don't like reading fanfics much, does fanon research still count if its animatic videos and headcanon posts or tumblr fics? Maybe I should post on both tumblr and wattpad since I don't use Wattpad much

This was a good breakdown of this issue. It pretty accurately goes through what I kinda taught myself though what I had to unlearn was over-reliance on pronoun use, which became confusing when scenes were getting gay. "Which 'he' are we referring to again?" lmao

although i roleplay canons instead of write fic, ive been checking out your channel the past few days since its mostly still relevant stuff to me. i really like this defense of ooc writing, because it reminds me of an oc roleplayer that once told me they don't usually roleplay with canon characters because so many of their writers refuse to let them develop and change. i'd never heard a perspective like that before and it wildly changed how i viewed "ooc" writing.

The only other time I can think of where describing canon characters/environments would be ok is if it’s through an OC’s POV and you’re trying to explore/develop your character’s unique voice, but that’s just me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Managed to write my first chapter about 2500 words and started the second one! Out of context sentence? ‘He smirks “your naivety is on your forehead, possibly infected.”’ and. “What? Scars are way cooler with a hardcore backstory. Like my brother Charlie, all his scars are from Dragons, that’s cool.”

The funnny thing about your saying that this does not replace the advice of a professional/therapist is that your words were exactly what the mental health professionals/therapists in my life have been trying to tell me. “Don’t try to be perfect. You’re good enough.” “Don’t compare your personal efforts with others.” “Pride isn’t arrogance; it’s okay to be proud.” …and so on and so forth. I feel insecure around them, so it’s hard to really grasp what they’re saying. However, from my favorite fanfic advisor I found just the tool to help me understand the things I’ve already been told in a way that I can understand, really understand. Already I’ve journaled so much about the connections from my life to this and what I have to learn from this. I’ll try to take this one step at a time. TLDR: THANK YOU SO MUCH.

it takes a LOT for me to back out of reading a fic once I've decided to jump in past the first chapter, but an a/n in the middle of a chapter? NOPE! I'm out. WHO DOES THAT?!?!

One of my current fandoms consists of both a book series and a tv show. The show follows the books for a season or two, and then goes off and does its own thing. My favorite way to think of canon in this fandom is "all canon will be shoved into a blender and cherry-picked until I like it."

great video! another reason for not commenting might also be ao3’s technical issues… there have been multiple times in the past few months where i tried to leave a comment and it logged me out or just didn’t work (so i had to retype the entire thing…). i’ve learned to write my comment in the notes app or notepad beforehand, but this is another obstacle to keep in mind, unfortunately.

I like calling the fanfic I'm writing rn a 'au' mainly because in the fandom i am working in different dimensions (dimensional hopping) are cannon, but it's more of a 'what if?' divergent plot.

in the Sun and moon show fandom (a fan channel into of itself for fnaf security breach) the character Ruin is done dirty in almost all accounts, flanderized, woobified, and character bashed. 1. he's british (flanderized for it) 2. he's seen as a sad boy who was pushed to do bad things by the creator / nexus / anyone who opposed him (woobified) 3.seen as a lit. phycotic monster with little to no reason for doing what he did (character bashed) which also goes along with protagonist centered morality since he's character bashed for killing Solar (brother of the protagonists) and not for like doing the exact same to billions of people..

i wrote draft 1 with basically no plotline but am now trying to make a list of the plot and dates for draft 2 😭 its so hard cuz draft 1 has horrible pacing and idk how to change it

I tend to avoid adding diversity for the sake of diversity alone. To me characters' should at least have something tiny bit to add to the story, to the narrative, to the world they are in. And being a diverse character should not be all they are but rather a part of who they are when building them from a scatch. Every character should have their own personality, motivations, interests etc when possible

Heavy Au writer here. No matter what I try I often found myself in situations where characters are ooc's more often than not with little easter eggs of the canon in their backstories or appreances. I then place such stories in universe I have created and continue making them more original. It is fun to explore what the situations and character motivations, their relationships etc could possibly be if this or that detail is changed

What about the time you are writing a fanfic and at some point realize that it has became an original work with cast just keeping their appreances of their fanfic selves? Has happened to me few times 😅

When you are writing au enemies-to-lovers fanfic where the canon did happen but slightly different way and the story takes place 7 years after the canon. It is hard to get their personalities just right when they become a couple as there are few to zero fics about them at the internet I can use as a guide 😢 (the fandom being Tokyo Mew Mew and the pairing being Masaya x Quiche)
